watching some SNL episodes from 2000-2002. Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond great. But overall? everyone else and the writing = Bad. People complain about SNL today, but its been mediocre for a very long time.

Jamie म्हणाले...

100% agree about SNL: it was never solidly funny. Some casts were more consistently funny than others but I never saw an episode that made me laugh throughout. I got way more entertainment value out of various sitcoms.

I don't hold their inconsistency against them; I get that it's hard to "be funny," especially week after week. What I hold against them is their ignorant takes.

Lorne Michaels supposedly said years ago that by 11:30 on Saturday night 80% of the audience was drunk or high or both, so that’s who they wrote for. That was certainly the case for me for much of my misbegotten youth. Now that I no longer partake I just don’t see it as funny. I wonder if other commentators here have had the same experience.

mongo - I figured as much! I was not the target audience and still am not.

I just watched The Edge (1997), written by David Mamet. Adventure/thriller. Very good.
I also recommend Tubi - that’s the app I watched it on. It’s free with commercials. But very few commercials. Maybe one commercial break or two. Not annoying at all. Lots of old movies, lots of noir, thrillers.

We watched Pluribus last night, the first two episodes anyway. Highly recommend it so far.

Thinking of the differences between Stalin and Hitler. While both were leaders of totalitarian Governments, they were quite different.

Hitler main interest was art prior to the age of 25, he served for 4 years as a frontline soldier and only then went into politics at the age of 30. Had he been accepted by Vienna Academy of Fine arts before the war, or if Germany had not lost the war or been humiliated by treaty of Versailles, he probably would've stayed unknown.

Stalin, OTOH, became a communist revolutionary at the age of 21 and spent almost his entire 20s and 30s engaged in revolutionary activities, in prison, or in exile in Siberia. His withered arm kept him out of the army, and he entire life was devoted to marxism and revolution.

Hitler eventually became the head of a party, and then was elected to President. Stalin, kept in the background. He was one of Lenin's lietuentants (sic). Went the communists seized power and won the Russian Civil war, its doubtful that anyone knew his name outside of Communist circles.

Wow! The Badgers finally beat a Big Ten team in football in the ugliest of weather. And strangely, Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell will return for the 2026 season, as confirmed by the athletic director. He must have one hell of a big buyout clause.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

The difference between Stalin and Hitler and fascism versus communism. An old gentleman who experienced both told me this: Facsism/Hitler was a tick - sucked your blood but easy to find and get rid of. Stalin/communism - fleas. Overran your body and you could never get rid of them.

Yes, all those "kill baby Hitler" scenarios miss the obvious solution: just go back in time and change the admissions letters at the Academy. Then you prevent the Holocaust and you don't have to kill a baby!

Either that, or just kidnap him, give him a bris, and put him in a Jewish orphanage. CC, JSM

A phrase that has no meaning in the SEC.

People have been complaining about the low quality of SNL since Eddie Murphy left. Since, what, 40 years ago? I can’t think of a reason why it’s still on other than the time slot is bad nobody else wants it.

Moscow based Russian chess club sites are going to extra warm indoor clothing in their tournaments.

"Fatality" is a good follow by the way. She wins a lot but always loses when she flirts with the opponent. The present game isn't flirting.

The other SEC team in my state is paying buyout installments to three former head coaches at the moment. lol

And congrats, Badgers!

Wisconsin is down to their 4th string quarterback. He passed for 8 yards yesterday. The punter had more passing yards (he threw a pass on a fake punt). But the defense was stellar.

50 year mortgages are for weaklings. Given the average American lifespan of 77.6 years, over 27 years of amortized interest would be left on the table.

Anna and Pia; both worthy of a moment's imagination :-)

Narr म्हणाले...

Hitler has been described as a soldier gone wrong; Stalin as a thug gone big.

That said, Hitler was never elected President. As head of the largest party and the most popular politician in Germany, he was named Chancellor by President Hindenburg*, and assumed the role and office of Fuehrer on his own.

*About whom it has been said--by old Wheeler-Bennett IIRC-- that in a long life there was no oath, vow, or promise he didn't violate.

Kakistocracy म्हणाले...

Trump‘s brilliant plan of 50 year mortgages means that after your first 20 years making huge interest payments to a bank you will have paid down almost none of the principal and they will still own the house you are living in with 30 years to go. A scam from a career con man.

Looking at an amortization table makes me question the term "ownership"

$400,000 Mortgage Comparison

Monthly Payment: $3,375
Total Loan Cost: $607,577

30-Year Mortgage (6.0%)
Monthly Payment: $2,398
Total Loan Cost: $863,352

50-Year Mortgage (6.0%)

Which would you pick?

With SNL, Laugh-In or Monty Python, not every joke landed. The idea was that they were doing something new and surprising and that would carry people through the unsuccessful parts. Once the format became established, the bits that failed to work became more noticeable.

Lately, it seems like the players are all 20 somethings or at most 30 somethings, while the audience is people who have been watching the show for decades. There's a disconnect there. In the beginning it was a show made by and for young people.

Tubi TV has a lot of free movies and TV, but I find myself scrolling for hours looking for something to watch. For me it's better to just watch documentaries on YouTube. It's easier to pick a topic and see what's there than to watch five minutes of movie after movie and realize that none of them is what I want.

Tim Davies, BBC Director General, and Deborah Turness, head of BBC News, have resigned over misleading editing of a Trump speech making it appear he explicitly encouraged the Capitol Hill riots.

Like we didn’t know.

john mosby म्हणाले...

Kak: we still have the mortgage interest tax deduction, right? (Not rhetorical - I own my place outright and haven’t paid attention for several years) Those first 20 years of paying all-interest are cushioned by the tax break. And there’s also the possibility many people will sell and downsize somewhere along those 50 years. Plus the value of the house will most likely increase. So the payments alone don’t tell the whole story. CC, JSM

Germany will begin repatriating the (one million!) Syrian refugees that they stupidly allowed into their country.

It’s happening everywhere.
