From an article by Catesby Leigh in City Journal, published last December, "Trump Should Erect an Arch for America’s 250th/His plans to mark the semiquincentennial in 2026 offer an appropriate opportunity to do so in Washington" (City Journal).
This NY Post piece from yesterday — "Trump shares rendering of massive stone monument for DC to mark America’s 250th birthday" — says the idea came from the Catesby Leigh article.
Catesby Leigh brought up the arch in Washington Square in New York City. That arch is well-loved, and you don't have to be a Trumpster to feel glad it's there. And that made me remember that we have an arch in Madison, Wisconsin:
Dedicated in 1912, the Camp Randall Memorial Arch honors 70,000 troops that trained at Camp Randall during the Civil War. Currently part of Camp Randall Memorial Park, this site served as an early state fairground and subsequently as a training ground for nearly all of the state’s Union troops during the Civil War. Camp Randall also housed sick and wounded Confederate prisoners of war....
Yes, an arch is a gateway, and this one is a gateway to what was a prison camp.

That’s not an arch, that’s what remains of a collective’s blown O-ring, professor.
The arch design is beautiful and appropriate. Do it!
Naked similar to the gateway Arch in St Louis only twice as tall with the elevator inside twice as fast.
Gee, for a bunch of people who are supposedly upset about the federal debt and deficit spending, you are sure ready to throw money at frivolities.
I guess 3-D printing has done a lot for architectural models, turning artist's concepts around in mere minutes. This one looks like it's dimensions are using the Golden Ratio principles.
Maybe we could call it L'ARC de TRiUMPh, but I digress...
$300 million for an ugly-ass addition to the White House, $1 billion for a Qatari 747 (which I doubt will be ready by the end of Trump's term), who knows how much for a marble arch.
And I am supposed to take you seriously?
’Gee, for a bunch of people who are supposedly upset about the federal debt and deficit spending, you are sure ready to throw money at frivolities.’
Yes, an arch would certainly be a cost-driver, re: our federal outlays. lol
We don't need no steenkin' arch in the Swamp! Actually we don't need one anywhere. We've got bronzed general on horseback in many places in Washington D.C.; we've got (although they are literally a dying breed) Confederate soldiers in small town squares in the South. We've got the great aching open emptiness of much of the Plains and the West where the cavalry hunted down the various Indian tribes. Much of the American landscape is a memorial arch of sorts to the westward expansion and eventual occupation of the country. Go out and see and feel the country. As I said, "we don't need no steenkin arch".
Paris can have the Arc de Triomphe.
America can have the Arch of Trump.
Won’t it be tagged with graffiti before the plaster dries over there?
Feder, it will probably be paid for by donations.

They really are economic illiterates aren’t they? Like Rain Man they are. about a hundred dollars
Something somebody thought up and Trump went along with.
The vibe I get from Trump these days.
Its a monument for the ages
Where would you an equivalent of l'enfant today
’They really are economic illiterates aren’t they?’
Who cares about economics when you can have feelings!! Feelings are sooper important and, dare I say, archly triumphal.
Who cares about economics when you can have feelings!!
Isn't that exactly what an arch would be, something to make you feel good?
Trump needs arch supporters.
And exactly how much is Trump spending on his performative invasion of Democratic cities?
And how about the $20 billion to bail out Argentenia? Can Trump even do that without Congressional approval?
Oh, cool! A new gewgaw for the Left to throw an absolute hissy fit over, as they pretend that similar arches in NYC, etc. are fine, shut up, whatever. Trump certainly knows how to tickle their outrage and draw them out where they can exercise their ugliest inclinations for the general public to witness. It just rankles the bejeezus out of them that it's Trump presiding over the big semiquincentennial bash, doesn't it?
I mean, how gauche, actually celebrating a country as evil as ours! And with an arch?!? How very, very fascist of Literally Hitler! And won't all the masked anarchists simply cover themselves with glory when they're filmed immediately covering it with graffiti, while taking sledgehammers to it?
Yup. That'll convince people there's no such thing as Antifa. It's all something the mean old Republicans made up in their heads.
At last, we come to the end of the mystery. As a child, nobody celebrated Freder's birthday.
can you get a project done in dc, in under a year, I find that doubtful
’Isn't that exactly what an arch would be, something to make you feel good?’
You were complaining about the cost, Fredo.
The golden winged angel brandishing a scepter should look like Melania Trump.
I am not only complaining about the cost, but the totally impractical idea that you are going to design, site and build a triumphant arch (and you know that Trump will insist it is the largest in the world) in eight months.
’I am not only complaining about the cost, but the totally impractical idea that you are going to design, site and build a triumphant arch (and you know that Trump will insist it is the largest in the world) in eight months.’
This is the first time you’ve mentioned the scheduling constraints, big boy. lol
The lefty lawsuits alone will take a decade.
That would be horrific. Thank goodness for lefty lawsuits.
Harder to topple.
The Arch of Hadrian was built around 132 in Athens not for military but for the history of a great city and his love of it.
Some predictions are hard. Some are obvious. Any arch blessed by Trump, no matter the funding, no matter the design will be regarded with horror by all the "right" (lefty) people.
The left is, if nothing else, reliably boring in their reaction to the big, bad Orange Man.
One, I don't think Trump wants to put himself in the same category as Roman Emperors, Napoleon, Hitler, and Kim Il Sung. Two, compare the Arc de Triomphe with the Grande Arche de la Défense to see what you're likely to get from contemporary architects. Three, save the money and pay down the debt.
I liked the Washington Square Arch too, but it was designed by #MeToo Stanford White.
I was going to bring up the Bath of Caracalla, but that was not strickly a monument, more a public works project,
why not floating halo around Obelisk?
The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., USA, a modern obelisk honoring George Washington.
Looks nice. I'm all for it. Call it the "Robert E. Lee archway"
Trump wants an Arch of triumph so he and his Jack booted thugs can March through it on January 20th 2029 when he takes over as the permanent authoritarian dictator of the United States and have his big beautiful parade of American neo-nazis in an homage to the Hitler takeover of Paris.
"the totally impractical idea that you are going to design, site and build a triumphant arch (and you know that Trump will insist it is the largest in the world) in eight months.’"
But remember how he got that ice skating rink done really fast?
History loves stories of things built impossibly fast — The Crystal Palace, The Eiffel Tower, The Empire State Building, The Pentagon, Disneyland... The Berlin Wall....
There's also the idea in the Catesby Leigh article that it should be a temporary structure... and I've think there's some talk of a temporary structure to be replaced by a permanent structure.
In Vientiane, Laos they have an arch known as the "vertical runway". The monument was built using American funds and cement actually intended to build a new airport.
The Royal Laotian Government instead built a monument to the fallen Laotian soldiers off WWII and the war of independence from France.
Looks like this:

For the record, this was my original response to the proposal: I’m afraid they won’t get it done in time and also I think it looks too generic and European. Does it really belong in the same area as the Washington monument the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson monument?
That's from a text I wrote.
Later I rethought the part about it seeming like copying Europeans and realized that the neoclassical style is the original idea of the design of Washington DC and it fits with the ideas of founding fathers. It reminds me of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but that's after the original design of Washington and it is also a choice of neoclassical. It all goes back to Rome (and Greece). And I think that's a better architectural model than modernism. There are a lot of ugly modernist buildings in Washington, and Trump's preference for the neoclassical style is solid.
As for building something rather than nothing, that's a different question. I strongly lean toward doing nothing. I'm only addressing the style choice.
The lefty lawsuits alone will take a decade.
..speaking of wasting money, there’s never much complaint about the cost of frivolous leftie lawsuits from Hawaiian judges…
Cue the Albert Speer references in 3...2...1.
Sounds like a good idea. I imagine trump gets to make all final decisions concerning location, materials, design etc. He has a mandate.
I hope there's enough gold left in Fort Knox to make the giant, stick-on doodads we'll need for Trump's arch.
Biden babbled about a giant, chocolate-chip ice cream cone monument and Obama just want a giant chip on a marble shoulder.
A temporary structure the size of a permanent structure.
I have a picture of myself in front of the Camp Randall Arch.
This is a great idea by Trump!
I'm totally on board with it, as long as they face the whole thing with a nice, orangey marble.
’Trump wants an Arch of triumph so he and his Jack booted thugs can March through it on January 20th 2029 when he takes over as the permanent authoritarian dictator of the United States and have his big beautiful parade of American neo-nazis in an homage to the Hitler takeover of Paris.’
I’m already sold on the arch, Howie - you don’t have to sell past the close!! ;)
