"There’s a strain of rabies where the animals get very, very friendly..."

"... [a] family saw a raccoon that kind of showed up on their front step and he was sick and he was so cute and wanted to be petted. And you know when raccoons aren’t barring their teeth they are pretty cute."

"The family petted and fed the animal until it died. They called animal services to pick up the body 'and thank God they did, because when they sent the brain out to be tested, it was positive, and so the whole family had to get vaccinated.... Oh, my gosh, they never would have known if they hadn’t called animal services.'"

Google sez in the last two decades it's an average of 2.5 though there were 5 in 2021. Almost all cases are contracted due to contact with wild animals.

Rabid foxes were an issue in the neighborhood wife and I first lived in from after leaving grad school. We also once saw a squirrel behaving strangely and called animal services, but they refused to come out because “squirrels can’t get rabies.” I don’t know if that’s true but in this case the squirrel had eaten overripe fruit from our elderly neighbors backyard fruit trees. They had waited too long to harvest and some of the fruit had fallen on the ground where it fermented. Poor little squirrel was drunk.

Friends of ours once woke in the middle of the night to a bat swooping around their bedroom. The husband tried to knock it down but it escaped, presumably as it had come in - now I can't recall whether they had had a broken screen or whether the bat broke it.

Everyone in the family had to go through the rabies treatment protocol, because apparently a bat bite (of that type, anyway) won't necessary be felt and its traces won't necessarily be seen, so they could all have been bitten. And without the actual bat, of course there was no way to know whether it was rabid. Why they even called anyone to ask if they should do anything, I don't know - it wouldn't have occurred to me!

Which reminds me that my husband thought he had "the world's smallest tick" on his arm yesterday, and I need to get him to ask his doctor about it in case it really was a tick and could have infected him with Lyme or some other dread ailment.

Anyway. If you find a bat in your house, trap it - or commit to going through the rabies treatment protocol.

Don't forget the recent grand Tetons' bats living in the attic of the grand lodge', with no timely intervention by the staff. The visitors are all now undergoing rabies treatments. I have a relative who stayed in a tent there, which had two bats visit. She just finished her rabies protocol.

Taking care of a sick raccoon which then dies on you, is obviously moronic. You shouldn't need animal control to tell you that. Stay away from sick wild animals!

So contra the "walkout" story the CDC is still functioning without the lazy bureaucrats who walked out. Good to know.

Inga म्हणाले...

“Anyway. If you find a bat in your house, trap it - or commit to going through the rabies treatment protocol.”

Animal control tells people to just open some doors and it will fly out. Bats will accidentally fly in at certain times of the year if a door is left open, like when bringing in groceries.

If you’re asleep and the bat is in your room, you could’ve been bitten or scratched unawares, so that might be worth getting the rabies protocol, from what I’ve read.

Rusty म्हणाले...

I have a high power air rifle to take care of the vermin problem. They're all cute until they start to destroy your infrastructure.

Howard म्हणाले...

No no no, Inga. People should try to trap bats in their home so that they may test the animal for diseases that the person exposed themselves to by getting up close and personal with a panicked desperate wild creature using all it's power to resist being trapped. You libs lack common sense.🤪

Jamie म्हणाले...

Yes, that was my point, Inga. If the bat enters your house (or tent) while you're asleep, you may need to be prophylactically treated for rabies - something that, in the absence of a bite wound, might not be someone's first thought. So if you can safely trap it, you can find out if rabies treatment will be required. The way to do it is to close it in a closet or a room where it can't escape, though, not dart around with a butterfly net, it seems to me.

Or, as I said, just get the treatment.

I wish we could charge people less for prescriptions and pets more, but dogs and cats have spotty employment records and have yet to accumulate "generational wealth." They are essentially deadbeats who can't pay what pharmaceutical research requires.

We had a bat in the house some years ago. I trapped it (with the vacuum cleaner). We had it tested. It was rabid. We got the shots. Three visits to the doctor: rabies shot 1 + immunoglobulin, rabies shot 2, rabies shot 3—over a few weeks. It cost $11,000 per person, covered by insurance. The shots were not unusually painful.

I used to get bats in my house pretty often. I would catch them with a fishing net (landing net) and put them back outside. If I went through the rabies treatment every time, that would have cost $$$. Of course, I had no money at all back then and I doubt my local emergency room would have been eager to pony up for all 4 uninsured people in my house.

i don't understand why, with the government's LOVE of vaccines, they don't push rabies vaccines on people..
BUT

Y'all are comparing apples (dog PRE VACCINES)
with oranges (human rabies TREATMENT)

Let's compare oranges with oranges (since the government DON'T prescribe apples (pre vaccines) to people..
a human orange (rabies treatment) costs about $1,000
a dog orange (rabies treatment) is VERY inexpensive.

y'all DO Know what they do to dogs with rabies, don't you?

Gilbar: AFAIK there is only one recorded case of a human surviving a full-on case of rabies, so an actual infection is pretty much a death sentence but it is by all accounts a horrible way to die so me, I don't know if I'd quibble that much about the qualitative difference between a bullet to the brain and a lethal injection. Either one sounds quicker/better than the alternative.

Tina Trent म्हणाले...

I have a gutsy 90ish friend whose dog showed rabbies symptoms some 85 years ago. They let the kids say goodby before they sawed his head off to send to University of Alabama for testing. She grabbed her brother's hand and forced it in the cage. Both got bit, plus the father. All three had to have weeks of shots. The dog was rabid. She was five and didn't believe them.
