"There is no customary tree as part of the scenery, for one thing, and no country road. This Didi and Gogo while away their endless days inside a kind of tapering tunnel..."

"... that has an enormous gaping mouth at the downstage end, where they perch on its lip, nice and close to the orchestra seats. Visually striking spareness is a hallmark of [director Jamie] Lloyd’s work.... What’s curious in 'Waiting for Godot' is that the textual distillation we have come to expect from Lloyd is largely missing.... [H]e doesn’t seem to have anything to say. That’s disappointing on its own, because the play needs strong directorial focus to land with any force, but particularly so at a time when surely a good chunk of the populace could identify with Didi and Gogo’s sense of exhaustion, futility and despair in the face of a relentlessly brutal world.... This Didi and Gogo speak the words, but without the weight and meaning of the thoughts they have thought countless times before...."

Writes NYT theater critic Laura Collins-Hughes, in "'Waiting for Godot' Review: Cue the Air Guitar/Jamie Lloyd’s pristinely chic Broadway revival of the existential tragicomedy casts the 'Bill & Ted' stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter as Samuel Beckett’s clowns" (NYT).

The idea here was to have Bill and Ted play the Didi and Gogo in "Waiting for Godot," and won't fans pack the theater to see that? Isn't that how things are done on Broadway these days? I have a sense of exhaustion, futility and despair in the face of that relentlessly brutal world.

Anyway, here's the painting — "Two Men Contemplating the Moon" — that Beckett said inspired him to write the play:

Is it hard to accept a tunnel instead of a tree and the the moon? A tunnel is sort of like a moonscape, what with the light at the end of it — moonish, no?

Here's that photo I took last March that made me think of a "Godot" set:

The tree is important!

I wonder what the production cost of this one was, and who was on the receiving end?

Bill and Ted make sense, oddly enough, as a lot of those movies have the kind of existential questioning but in a ludicrous kind of way. The more recent third one pressed that forward. Plus, Keanu is a apparently a good guy and they have stayed actual friends over the years.

More importantly, I didn't know Two Men Contemplating the Moon was the influence of the play. Caspar David Friedrich is my favorite artist as he brings a contemplative thrust to his work, and his bridging of the Romantic and Modern styles really speaks into our current frenzies. I didn't know about him until I visited the Getty Center in LA during a soul-parched time right after getting my MDiv. I walked by A Walk at Dusk and it grabbed my heart and soul so deeply my life took a major turn after that day, in large part with the intent of getting my mind to catch up. I have 2 oil reproductions (A Walk at Dusk and A Monk by the Sea) and another 4 prints of his (Man and Woman Contemplating the Moon, and Morning, Midday, Evening that are part of his The Times of Day series) hanging in my house.

The Tree is always important. That's a lesson that is hard to teach but once learned is profound.

It's not enough to have a sense of exhaustion, futility and despair in the face of that relentlessly brutal world. One must be seen to have a sense of exhaustion, futility and despair in the face of that relentlessly brutal world.

The one production I've seen had a bench at a train (or bus) station.

I have my ticket for mid October. Not exhausted. Looking forward to it. I found the article on the two stars prep work interesting.

A tree softens that "relentlessly brutal world". IMHO. Though I may be looking at a Romantic play through a romantic (naturalistic) lens.

Beckett. Waiting for Godot. Got it. At first, I mistook Didi and Gogo for Ren and Stimpy.

I saw the TV version in the 60s, with Zero Mostel and Burgess Meredith. Loved it! Lived in NYC at the time but failed to get into see the 80s version with Steve Martin and Robin Williams. I don't know why it was thought that Bill and Ted had anything new to offer. The NYT review makes that clear.

Decadence is when a society no longer is capable of original cultural production and instead endlessly recycles the no-exit dead-end past.

Pozzo never gets his due. His is the most misunderstood character of all. They tell us Lucky is the forgotten man.

Not so fast, my friend.

Watched a documentary on The Algonquin Round Table yesterday. Wit and relatable prose have been lacking in criticism since as long as I've been alive. Turgid, pretentious writing is what passes for intelligent and insightful commentary.

I've never seen Waiting For Godot, but I thought Waiting For Guffman was a hoot. Not as good as Best In Show, but still a lot of fun.

Here's a recording of the original 1956 Broadway production with Bert Lahr.
Waiting for Godot

Godot has been done with all female casts, all black casts, all this and all that. Its a play that lends itself to various interpetations. Being variously interpeted as anti-capitalist, about Gays, about jews, about Christianity, about atheism, about Existentialism, or about Beckett and WW 2.

So, not having a tree can be seen as another variation. BTW, I was amazed to learn the martin-williams production was pooh-poohed by the critics. No doubt due to snobby disdain.

Waiting for Godot is the MOST pretentious piece of theater ever staged. My elderly father, fell off his chair in the front row during a production in a box theater - in the round - just so he could get out of seeing the rest of the show.

I just spent a weekend with people like that. They say it once in many conversations, a token piece of suffferrrring, but then it's on to messaging that says We are still doing ggggrrrrrate....

This is pretty funny. At Godot's premiere, the populace had just suffered through WWII and the Great Depression. But no, it is today's populace who really know about exhaustion, futility, and despair.

Are their any headshots in the production. Keanu's at his best when he's shooting bad guys in the head. Or fighting Mr. Smith. That was pretty good too.

"At Godot's premiere, the populace had just suffered through WWII and the Great Depression. But no, it is today's populace who really know about exhaustion, futility, and despair."

This does make sense. Those who came out of the Depression and WW2 had a massive burst of hope of a better world, having pressed through very active problems and been given a new world filled with all kinds of possibilities. The promise of the Modern dream was becoming real and they were experiencing it with education, home ownership, jobs, economic growth, good music, entertainment.

But the promises of the 20th century didn't solve the actual existential problems. New and persistent problems continue and the Modern promises of technological achievement (Science!) making for a better experience of life instead have resulted in a sense of isolation, politics of hatred, massive increase in prices for homes, cars, everything.

Despair doesn't come from having a problem or experiencing hardship. Despair comes from having problems that previous promises to solve didn't and can't solve. And no more solutions can be found, since they have all seemingly been tried before. That attitude was emerging in the early 50s in Europe but wasn't so much in the US where material hope propelled us into the new millennium.

It's also true that our era has a mix of existential despair and highly privileged ennui. We're not happy but we have too many distractions to really deal with it. Kierkegaard talked about how despair can be hidden by such distraction but still is a real existential despair that can come out in dysfunctional and destructive ways.

I saw the Irish Abbey Theatre players perform at NYU at least 20 years ago. It was absolutely the funniest thing I have ever seen. Read Shakespeare and you immediately see the greatness. Waiting for Godot must be seen to be understood and only the Irish truly understand Beckett.

Sometimes the reviewer is right and sometimes the reviewer doesn’t get it. The New York Times put Keanu Reeves at #4 on its list of the best actors of the 21st century in 2020, so there’s that.

The one time I saw Waiting for Godot performed, I had an overwhelming desire to steal Estragon’s shoes.

W4G is like dining at a fabulously chic and exclusive restaurant that serves nothing but potage de navets. Everyone is outwardly flattered by being seated where most are turned away, but everyone is inwardly chagrined and resentful that they've spent money and time perhaps more profitably spent at McDonalds.

Perhaps it's the tree from the garden. And having forgotten the meaning of the tree we are condemned to argue absurdities.

Lastest from Israel. Israel and the U.S. launched joint strikes in June 2025 targeting Iran’s key nuclear facilities—Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan—using bunker-busting bombs.
The goal was to “decapitate” Iran’s nuclear program and possibly trigger regime change.
IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi reported that while Israel destroyed above-ground infrastructure at Natanz, the underground centrifuge fleet survived mostly intact.
Netanyahu later admitted the strike wasn’t meant to eliminate Iran’s entire uranium stockpile, saying they knew in advance they wouldn’t reach all 450 kg of enriched uranium.
Iran had already moved some of its most sensitive material out of Fordow before the attack.
Iran’s nuclear program is crippled but not obliterated—experts say it’s been set back by months, not years.
The strikes caused chemical and radiological contamination inside Natanz, but no external radiation leak.
Iran responded with propaganda and claims of uncovering Israeli nuclear secrets, while also downplaying its ability to retaliate due to weakened leverage.
So yeah, the “total destruction” narrative didn’t hold up under scrutiny. It’s more like a strategic dent than a knockout blow. Trump and his group of fabricators and the "total oblivion" lie is nothing unusual from this group. Bibi should have let trump know so they could at least tell the same fabrication of total oblivion, Bibi played trump like Vlad did over Ukraine. Lets see how they spin this one...

As far as the tree, there was one memorable tree for me when I went to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Michigan's west coast, back in 2018. It was late October, a very blustery day with a bitter wind coming in off Lake Michigan. We followed the sandy trail from the parking lot out to the Lake and got the full force of the wind. There was one little hillock at the edge of the dune with a cluster of a dozen scrubby trees or so growing out of it, making a nice windbreak. That's what your tree pictures reminded me of.
