Movie Review - The Collector (1965) nominated for 3 AA, including best picture. Based on the John Fowles Novel, a man kidnapps a young women and holds her against her will because he just wants to be with her. She must outwit him in order to escape.
Good movie of its kind. Don't know why it got a AA nomination. Of course, the Academy alway loved Wyler. Good acting. But story is overly familiar and its really just a well-made "stalker" movie. From here it was just one more baby step to the stalker-serial killers.
Trade is driven by many factors. One thats being overlooked lately is the fact that the USDollar is way down. This is perhaps the thing that affects me the most, as my income is in dollars, and my expenses are in Euros. No bueno. US tarriffs make US imports more expensive, but exchange rates are probably more significant. Conversely a cheap dollar makes US exports more attractive. NPR's big story today? "Republicans are getting people fired for saying things on the internet. OMH, where is freedom of speech? Its Joe McCarthy all over again!"
Dishonest clowns. Is NPR's audience really this stupid?
That last one has a very nice composition, well done ! The vegetation is still lush, but starting to show the signs of late summer senescence, before the first frosts start to hit.
@mongo, I notice the original site I posted this morning is still not accessible, so I am assuming it has been taken down. I saw a note somewhere that at last count they had exceeded 50,000 offenders.
Somewhat hedged. But most is inconvenient to move, or rather to liquidate US investment assets. We have no problems living well on just my pension and social security, even with an @10% cut lately. Just on that I make about as much as a Spanish cardiologist (to give an example).

Here's the trump play I saw coming after the meeting when Zelensky SAID "WE CANT HAVE AN ELECTION BECAUSE OF THE WAR" You could see trumps eyes light up. 1. Keep sending in Military ,National Guard etc to different states hoping some will fight back and then he can initiate Martial Law and say ,see I told you its out of control. 2 No midterms while we are at WAR. Constitution says a President cant stop an election, yeah but they didn't have this SCOTUS in the tank for trump and they can do whatever they want ,who is gonna stop them. A FAKE Military Apocalypse WITH TRUMP wearing his Cavalry hat and sword like his "I love the smell of deportation in the morning" post. Stay tuned its kind of see through if your paying attention. KILL EM ALL President of the RIGHT ONLY. (What SENATOR KILLED IN MINNESOTA HE SAYS) FLAGS HALF STAFF FOR WHO?
A nurse who was suspended without pay for calling out a doctor who cheered Kirk's assassination has been reinstated, and the doc has resigned. Good. He did this at the hospital in front of the nurses' station. Completely unprofessional behavior.
“If the governor had asked me to do that, I would've done that, but the governor of Minnesota didn't ask me. I didn't. I wouldn't have thought of that. But I would've, if somebody had asked me, people make requests for the lowering of the flag, and oftentimes you have to say no because it would be a lot of lowering. The flag would never be up. Had the Governor of Minnesota asked me to do that, I would've done that gladly.” ——Donald J. Trump
Of Fowles, he was a big deal at the time. I recall reading "Collector", "The Magus" (which is drug-trip weird), and "The French Lt's Woman" (which is its own sort of weird). The first two had a bdsm-fetish air to them IIRC.
While Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak has noted there is no simple solution, she has argued that a heavier police presence could undermine progress, local news outlet WCAX Channel 3 reported.
That's right, we wouldn't want to clean up the crime, because the oblivious student body at UVM elects the mayor, and they don't care about people's "businesses" over the right of people to rifle unlocked cars, pester drivers stopped at lights, and sleep in the downtown park, setting up a camp there making it a no-go zone for the people who used to come to the city to spend money and provide jobs. It was once a pretty nice town, not that many years ago.
There was something really familiar about certain trolls suddenly spamming out a some slang term as if it was the Answer to All Questions, even the word was utterly obscure to people who were far more conservative or "right-wing."
Immediately after the Kirk assassination, the word was "Groyper," which no normal person had heard of before, and turned out not to be easily or unambiguously defined: I still can't tell if it's a self-referential name like Juggalo (for fans of Insane Clown Posse), or an insult being applied by outsiders.
And then a few hours ago it clicked. This was the same exact thing as the dreaded "Boogaloo Boys" who (if I'm remembering correctly) were for a while Public Enemy Number 1 and were going to descend upon every peaceful leftist gathering and start murdering people. I have some friends who are extremely conservative (in absolute terms, not relative to everyone around me at a small liberal arts college in Massachusetts), and none of them had ever HEARD of these Boogaloo Boys. And yet there was post after post after post denouncing them, warning against them, and tarring normal political discourse with its "association" with the Boogaloo Boys. By the way, has anyone heard anything at all about those terrifying Boogaloo Boys? Have they been murdering progressives while yelling "Viva Charlie Kirk?" You'd think they would, given how out of control and monstrous they were.
Prof. M Drout. Inga is far leftist, uses all the same copy-cat stuff from leftist source . She posted a lot about Boogaloo boys. They were not real. Leftist fabrication, and distraction... Fake but like marching feds with masks on.
Is it my imagination or does Charlie Kirk’s assassin look like Beto O’Rourke’s twin brother.?
It must be your imagination. Beto O'Rourke looks like he could slip into a Hyannisport family reunion and be more welcome than RFK Jr. I don't see much Irish in the killer's face.
Charlie Kirk's killer does look more than a little like Charlie Kirk himself. Is it just that they're both young white guys? Or is there some strange underlying duality or doubleness? Something out of a story by Poe or Kafka or Nabokov (whose father was also assassinated), maybe?
"The Collector" is both timely and dated. Timely, because some people have the same cliches they had then. Dated, since intelligent people have long since seen through those cliches about class and sex and such.
"Buy stocks in companies that generate electricity."
If you believe the electrical requirements are rising at the predicted levels, might be safer to buy the stocks of the companies that supply the building of power plants. Also, natural gas suppliers and the pipeline owners.
RCOCEAN II mentioned people getting fired for saying things. Well, not exactly just saying things, but justifying political assassination. Someone made a list of what people were fired for earlier this decade. 25 people, most of the cases I read about at the time. But here's the link so you can compare and contrast the firings. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1967557497755148744.html
Many commenters on X and Disqus and, well, everywhere, are saying most violence in the USA is carried out by whites. White Christian males! Is this true? Well, possibly, by statistics. Let's look at the two who placed a bomb on a Fox news truck. Adeeb Nasir and Adil Justice Ahmed Nasir. Good Amish sounding names. Booked and classified as- white. Which most Arabs are. Caucasian- or white. So that adds to the white people are more violent myth. And it seems there's a lot of awful black looking people these days being booked as white. So, basically, the numbers are cooked. And usually (or always?) when booked, religion isn't mentioned. Nor nationality background.
I'm not surprised that most (all?) government statistics are now fake, and fake not in the sense of interpretation, statistical manipulation, or adjustment, but at the level of the data itself. In retrospect it seems obvious that faking statistics enables you to create a false picture of the world that is favorable to your political goals, giving the impression that your policies are working to improve peoples' lives, etc.
What I'm surprised by is that we SEEM to have had accurate government statistics for something like 75-100 years, with the fakery starting (like so much other corruption) around 2005-2008. Why didn't previous bureaucracies just report fake economic news when it was helpful? Were there too many government workers who believed in the mission of their particular institution and wouldn't fake the data? Did the Powers that Be think that it would be disastrous for things like military preparedness if the statistical picture the rulers had did not reflect reality (i.e., what happened in the USSR)? Or were a lot of government statistics actually fake, going back as far as FDR, or Wilson? I don't know how we'd get a good answer. But regardless, it seems reasonably clear that in the early 2000s low-level people started tweaking the data at the input end. My guess is that it started with climate research because the public was refusing to get too excited and the weather wasn't cooperating, and so it became important to generate data that kept up the urgency. This practice either spread or was reintroduced into the economic realm sometime after 2008. My guess is 2010, which is when a whole bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff started to go crazy. Remember that we never did get any kind of significant rebound or boom after the crash and it wasn't just the people at the top, but the worker-bees at the bottom who were getting very nervous about the Queen Bee's re-election.* It seems likely that the economic numbers were getting goosed to make it seem like the economy was in much better shape than it actually was (looking back, we didn't really recover from '08 until well into '15 or '16). Then there was the undeniably manipulation of the data at the input end for covid: counting motorcycle accidents as covid deaths and giving ventilator patients one dose of ivermectin or plaquinel before they died to show those didn't work so that the "no treatment" finding could stand. And simultaneously we have the obviously fakery of economic statistics during the Biden inflation years: last week I came across a grocery receipt from 2019 in the bottom of a box. Everything has DOUBLED since then, which, as we all could sense, that the official inflation numbers were bogus.
And the problem is that a whole lot of real world activity is based on government statistics. Cost of living for people on Social Security is the obvious situation where everybody's standard of living goes way down if the inflation numbers are fake. And I'm sure that non-profits like universities and hospital, and entities like pension funds, not to mention just regular businesses have to act as if the government numbers are real even if that leads to misallocations, shortfalls, etc.
I guess we're about to find out whether or not it's possible to manage and maintain an enormous, complex, and interconnected economy when the statistical picture of it has been distorted--because even if the fakery has stopped (I'm guess it has just move in the opposite direction), you're having to use bad data from the past to identify where you are in the present. We live in interesting times.
*In retrospect it seems ridiculous, because Mitt Romney is such a ridiculous person, but there was massive economic dissatisfaction in 2010, particularly among African Americans.
WASHINGTON, UT—As he described a massive backlog of murders that continued to stump the agency he leads, desperate FBI director Kash Patel reportedly asked the family of alleged Charlie Kirk assassin Tyler Robinson on Monday if they could solve any other cases. “You showed a real knack for catching criminals when you identified your son in those photos we released, so how about continuing your hot streak by taking a look at these open investigations?” said Patel, who then dumped a large stack of paperwork, fingerprint evidence, and DNA samples out onto the family’s kitchen table, explaining that he had a lot on his plate right now and would really appreciate their help. “I really don’t know how you cracked the Kirk case. Those pictures were so blurry! Did you guys go to school for this or something? I was honestly at the end of my rope. Have you seen the show High Potential ? This is just like that!” At press time, Patel had been spotted dining in a trendy restaurant while the shooter’s family was said to be digging into the Zodiac Killer murders.~The Onion
Prof Drout: The Stock Market recovered quickly from 2008 government manipulations. Personally, my investment holdings were back on track in under three years, which allowed me to retire in 2011.
But frankly, you have no proof that the methodologies for statisitical data collection ever changed, although we have the abilitiy to capture data detail now that didn't exist even looking back just to the turn of the century.
But poliitcians stupidly play the control game for their personal benefit, not to help the citizenry. Prices are rising and farmers are going out of business and we are all being ripped off by rich and famous gangsters. The next major economic downturn is upon us and there is no turning back.
"..the obviously fakery of economic statistics during the Biden inflation years: last week I came across a grocery receipt from 2019 in the bottom of a box. Everything has DOUBLED since then, which, as we all could sense, that the official inflation numbers were bogus.."
well, LOOK; there is NO Denying that under the Big Biden Admin things just got better and better. Just look at the chocolate ration!

Apple released iOS 26 yesterday. If you have an iPhone 11 or better, you can use it, although to make full use of most of the features like Apple Intelligence, you'll need at least an iPhone 15 Pro. The Liquid Glass may or may not be to your liking, but there are ways to adjust the look if you don't like some things, like increasing the text contrast. There is a bit of a learning curve, since some of the controls are different than iOS 18. The Camera app is completely overhauled, and a new Spatial option allows you to take pictures that look 3D if you use them for a photo lockscreen. Note that to get the 3D effect, the picture must have been taken in Spatial; for old pictures, the icon doesn't show up as an option when you are setting the picture as your lockscreen. Other nifty new options include Screen Unknown Callers, if you don't just want to send them to voicemail automatically; a virtual assistant that monitors if you are put on hold and then notifies you when a person comes onto the call; making a Poll in a group chat (but only if all people in the chat have an iPhone). Apple Intelligence works pretty well, allowing you to look at things around you and get information about them.
People have complained about how the high-publicity incidents are being used as cover for the "real" issues, for example the countdown till the appropriations bill runs out.
Okay, accept that arguendo. The R's should explicitly link Kirk's (z''l) death to appropriations. Every speech on the floor should be along the lines of "First the Democrats want to suppress the will of the people by killing our spokesman - now they want to suppress the will of the people by letting the government starve to death." Then add a clause to the bill specifically mourning Charlie's (pbuh) death.
Maybe also put up stunt metal detectors outside the chamber for Democrats the way that was done the other way round after Jan 6th. Have female Rs (heck, male ones, too) give breathy speeches about how afraid they feel. Yeah, it would have to be the male Rs - no one would believe Boebert, Luna, etc, are afraid of anything.
The Rs are missing a chance to leverage this horror into a way of getting their manifesto enacted. The D's would never make such an error. CC, JSM
…just for perspective Atlanta says the last GDPNow for Q3 is 3.1 percent which differs by 200bp from the ‘consensus’ predictors…
…and I don’t bother to post predictions. The one time I did they stayed up for a few weeks then my post and the post others made related to it disappeared. The magic of AI or something…
But frankly, you have no proof that the methodologies for statisitical data collection ever changed
Really? No Proof? I mean they are changed routinely. I still remember when BLS completely changed the way healthcare costs were measured quarter to quarter to show a major drop in healthcare spending, which artificially lowered Biden's overall economic inflation rate.
Regarding misleading or fraudulent government data and nominal investment performance, note that the Consumer Price Index is gamed per the objectives of the politicians. One version applies to most everyone, another version is for urban blue collar workers, another version excludes "volatile" categories, and there is yet another for the elderly.
Also, the current "core inflation" method has been criticized for greatly underestimating inflation. People in power will do anything to claim credit but avoid blame.

…I can’t fathom a constructive reason for any of them to stay away other than threats and consequences from their constituents. Maybe it’s time you stopped listening to those people?
I’ve always suspected they’re just trying to wait out Trump with the confident expectation they will finish the ‘never have to worry about another election again’ plan after he’s gone…
Yah they’ve been very very gaming the numbers the last few years but we’ve watched for that for decades. It used to be easy to take the raw data and develop our own measure but gummint has been messing with the raw data, too
Further reading: There's another issue that is hiding in plain sight IMO. That is: Dollar hegemony relies on the US trade deficits, which have persisted for nearly 50 years. Standard economics would say the trade imbalance should have corrected through currency adjustment (i.e. dollar weakening). But the dollar hasn't weakened and the imbalanced has not corrected -- for a simple reason. For the dollar to remain the single reserve currency it needs to be supplied to non-US holders.
The trade deficit is balanced by a matching out-flow of dollars to offshore entities (currently $800 billion annually) that allows for dollar transactions and dollar reserves. There are other ways theoretically, but not practically. The Euro or Rmb will not become reserve currencies unless Europe and/or China are willing to run large persistent trade deficits. Not likely.
Paying with dollars for excess imports over exports leaves the exporting counties with dollars. Robert Triffin, a Belgian-American economist, put it this way: “A country whose currency serves as the global reserve currency must supply the world with its currency to fulfill global demand for foreign exchange reserves. This typically requires running trade deficits, which can conflict with domestic economic objectives.” Barry Eichengreen said: “The benefits of being the issuer of the world's reserve currency come with the responsibility of providing sufficient liquidity to the global economy, which often entails running persistent current account deficits.”
If you’re desperate for a good talking point for your side it’s fun to think of a weak dollar as if it’s proof of economic retraction. As eluded to with real life examples it made the lefties European vacations more expensive this summer- should have gone to Canada or Japan…the flip side is now US goods are less expensive to row. Unfortunately the Donald Trumps running many of the other places flame the trade war with their own tariffs and protections but so far it’s too easy to just blame Trump. Europe isn’t going to win a prolonged battle so they’ll try to get their licks in then there will be compromise and both sides will get new talking points…I’ll add mine- Rolex has been busy signing up new hires for their training programs…in the United States…
Vice President JD Vance passionately urged Americans to call the employers of the “terrorist sympathizers” who are celebrating Charlie Kirk’s murder, saying it will send a message that their heartlessness is not welcome in a civil society.
For what possible reason would people celebrate death? Who do we tell about the mistreatment and killing of immigrants by masked ICE goons?
Disagreement with Charley Kirk's strange political views was and continues to be widespread.
We are due for a global economic recalibration, as the world no longer resembles the post-WW2 environment. We've been the big mama sow nursing a whole bunch of mercantilist piglets for a long time. Being a great power and controlling currency is always a double-edged sword.
If not Trump, someone else would have to do it. Given human intertia, it takes a war or persistent effort to change the status quo.
NY Post headline: “Old man who falsely claimed he shot Charlie Kirk is known ‘gadfly’ who told cops he did it to ‘draw attention from the real shooter’: report”
I have a proposal. In keeping with the professor's statement that comments may be deleted for bad faith, I propose the following (by way of example):
1. Achilles says I misquoted Charlie Kirk. 2. I respond that I never quoted him or paraphrased anything that he said. Hence it nec follows that I never misquoted him. I.e., Achilles is either lying or mistaken. 3. Ann then enters the conversation and asks Achilles to "put up or shut up." 4. The onus is then on Achilles to provide evidence that support his claim I misquoted Kirk (which he will be unable to do since I never purported to quote him about anything). 5. If he cannot meet his burden, at least his bad faith will be visible for all to see.
Limiting libel on the platform might encourage more good faith dialogue. I have no expectation that something like this will ever happen, but I think it's a good idea and will be a positive for the blog. Otherwise people like Achilles can continue to lie and lie in bad faith and never respond when called out. How it that a good thing?

gadfly wants you to know that killing Charlie Kirk was actually a good thing because it protected immigrants from ICE and that the resistance lives on.
gadfly makes it as clear as he can that he will continue to support killing us until we change our position on immigration.

You had a chance at good faith dialogue.
His name was Charlie Kirk. You called him a racist. You called him a fascist. You called us threats to democracy. You continue to do so now. You constantly call all of us racists with no honest quotes.
Nobody cares about things you may or may not have said. You haven't condemned the hundreds of thousands of people that are dancing on Kirk's grave and you are in the same political tribe as them. You want democrats to have power.
Anyone who calls us racist, fascist, and wants democrats to have power wants us dead or silenced.
Even now you want Ann to silence me and play along with your clown nose off game.
Whether it's Joe Biden condemning the killing of Charlie Kirk in 2025 or Charlie Kirk calling for the killing of Joe Biden in 2024, both men have issued strong words about the other's killing.
rehajm: "I’ve always suspected they’re just trying to wait out Trump with the confident expectation they will finish the ‘never have to worry about another election again’ plan after he’s gone…"
Yeah, killing the VP's friend kind of threw a spanner into those works. Now they will have a 2028 election with meticulous poll-watching and with all the armed instruments of government used to suppress rather than support Antifa. Followed by eight years of Vengeance Vance. Yeah, the Dems will never have to worry about another election again, because they will have no chance of cheating and threatening their way to victory. @PRof M Drout: Don't forget, as those grocery prices doubled between 2019 and now, the packages they came in were systematically shrunk down: Shrinkflation. What used to be a box of wheat thins will now almost fit in your back pocket. I was reading a story yesterday that grandmas have quit buying cake mixes, which have been reduced - gradually - to about 2.3 of what they were a few years ago. But grandma still has the same pan, and it makes for a puny, pathetic Bundt. Or, grandma has a recipe that makes use of a cake mix, except now using that box results in a gooey mess instead of tasty cookies.
The honoring of data as it stands is the bedrock that supports the scientific method, the integrated principles of the Enlightenment. But don't talk to us about a 400-year transformation of humanity into modern society, when we've got an election to win next year, and climate policy that begs for power-grabbing attention.
"I’ve always suspected they’re just trying to wait out Trump with the confident expectation they will finish the ‘never have to worry about another election again’ plan after he’s gone…"
of course that is their plan. Still it. the Dems are corrupt power whores.
"Charlie Kirk calling for the killing of Joe Biden in 2024,"
Please provide a link, Mr Kakistocracy. All you have provided so far that I have seen is an AI statement that easily could be a hallucination, which other commenters have traced to an unsupported comment on a left wing opinion show. Nobody has been able to find this quote, but you keep repeating it.
This could, of course, be a Chorus strategy to induce more hallucinations in AI "supporting" the smear.
“Joe Biden is a bumbling, dementia-filled, Alzheimer's, corrupt tyrant who should honestly be put in prison and/or given the death penalty for his crimes against America." ~ Charlie Kirk (The Charlie Kirk Show)
Given that Europe is in an economic tailspin due to their enthusiastic support of sanctioning themselves right out of the affordable energy they used to use to run their economies, it would be kind of surprising if the US could get through this period, which includes and economic showdown with China, without some kind of downturn.
We are in a major crisis, world wide, and we have weaponized the dollar in that fight as if people would just go along, because there was no alternative. Well, there was no alternative to the British Pound Sterling until one day there was, the US dollar.
Russia just floated bonds to build the new pipeline across Mongolia to provide the cheap energy they used to happily provide to Europe, until we blew up their pipeline, to the Chinese.
Then people here claimed that the Russians blew up their own pipeline, remember that? Just like they blew up the dam that provided agricultural water to Crimea. Why? Well because they are stupid and sub-humanly stupid at that! Nobody believes the old lies anymore, but the fresh new lies, sure, we believe those!
The truth is leaking out about Ukrainian casualties, and Lindsay Graham's comment about them fighting to the last man on account of they hate Russians so much is looking pretty prescient. Why didn't Russia destroy the bridges by which Ukrainians deliver their army to the front? Because it's easier to destroy the army this way.
Russia floated those bonds in China. To build Nordstream, and for other huge projects, they floated the bonds in Europe. But now Europe has shown the world that they can't be trusted, that if they really want something badly enough that was given to them for safekeeping, they will simply take it.
This is all about a civil war that broke out in Ukraine after we backed a coup, and we recognized a government that violently took over because they couldn't wait for the next election, we recognized them and had the CIA in there, per the NYT, before the gun barrels were even cool.
Ha Ha Kaki found a clip where Kirk says the same thing EVERY Democrat has been saying about Trump for 10 years. And Kaki's team even tried to murder him. Only person who tried to murder Biden is Dr Jill with a pillow.
Jaq: Please stop repeating Putinite propaganda that has already been refuted. It makes you look like a paid liar. Examples:
1. Europe's economic tailspin may be partly due to sanctions and the loss of Nordstream, but it has a lot more to do with stupid Green policies. Germany shut down all of their nuclear power plants, and even blew up the cooling towers to make sure the next government couldn't turn the power on again. I pointed this out to you before: why do you pretend not to know it?
2. No one here has "claimed that the Russians blew up their own pipeline". I have pointed out that some clues point that way, but I DON'T KNOW who blew it up, and NEITHER DO YOU. You pretend you do, but you insisted for months that it was an absolute fact that the US did it, Victoria Nuland said so! Then a newspaper story claimed that the Ukrainians did it without telling the US, and you switched to claiming that was an absolute fact! Both stories can't be true, but both could be false, and you have definitely called a false story absolutely true even if one turns out to be true. When you say "we" did it, you are lying: if the Ukrainians did it without telling us, which is the current most popular theory, then "we" didn't do it, did we? Unless you're inadvertently admitting that you're only pretending to be an American and are actually Timofei in Voronezh.
3. On the other hand, it is a proven fact that Russians blew up the Nova Kakhovka dam. The troops on the scene bragged about it when they did it, and only started denying it a couple hours later when they realized they'd drowned a lot of fellow Russian soldiers downstream. (They drowned a lot more Ukrainian civilians, but that was intentional.) Most important, it was impossible for anyone to blow it up except the troops on the scene. The blueprints are available on the web, and the dam, built in the '50s, was designed to be immune even to a nuclear blast. It could only be blown up by placing charges at specific structural points in tunnels deep down inside. That could only be done by those who occupied the site, and that was Russians.
Just about everything else you wrote in your 9:05am and 9:09am comments is also a lie, but these are particularly egregious, and have already been corrected many times. Why do you repeat them, if you're not paid to do so?
P.S. The idea that Putin couldn't possibly have blown up the Nordstream pipelines himself, because it damaged the Russian economy, and no one would every intentionally damage his own economy, is easily refuted. The Germans blew up their nuclear power plants, knowing it would damage their economy. Q.E.D.
There's no crying in farming. Sometimes you do get what you deserve. Mid western foolishness. ‘You Were Warned’: Arkansas Farmers Who Voted for Trump Plead for Emergency Aid as Tariffs Push Them Into Ruins Hundreds of Arkansas farmers gathered last week in Brookland, pleading for emergency financial relief as they struggle under mounting debt, rising costs, and collapsing crop prices. Many in the room had voted for President Donald Trump, yet they now fear the survival of their farms — and their families’ livelihoods — are at stake. Chris King, who has farmed Arkansas soil for 40 years, told congressional staffers at the meeting in the northeast Arkansas town, “I have never been as worried as I am now about whether or not my kids and grandkids will be able to carry on,” according to local outlet KATV. yup ALL PART OF THE PLAN...Trump vows national emergency in Washington, DC over ICE dispute U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he would call a national emergency and federalize Washington, D.C. after Mayor Muriel Bowser said its police would not cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The comments come after several thousand protesters hit the streets this month over Trump's August deployment of National Guard troops to "re-establish law, order, and public safety," after calling crime a blight on the capital. "In just a few weeks. The "place" is absolutely booming... for the first time in decades, virtually NO CRIME," Trump said on Truth Social. Create a problem, tell people YOU are the solution, and keep moving toward Martial Law (cant have elections during Martial Law now right, and the corrupt SCOTUS signs on)
“ Some studies—especially those focused strictly on the U.S.—sometimes lump jihadist violence into the broader category of “right-wing terrorism” because: • It shares certain authoritarian, anti-liberal, and reactionary features (strict social hierarchy, rejection of pluralism).”
Salt Lake City Gadfly George Zinn, who was questioned by police about the Kirk shooting, now says he claimed to have shot Kirk himself, in an effort to give the shooter more time to get away. Where do all these gadflies come from anyway?
Joe Biden is a bumbling, dementia filled, alzheimer's, corrupt tyrant who should honestly be put in prison and or given the death penalty for his crimes against America.
That was an unfortunate quote, but there was nothing in there about taking the law into one's own hands and denying Biden due process.
A typical mormon grandpa, there are lots of them out there in their rural peach farms, mentally ill, I would guess an undiagnosed autist, dabbling in child porn for that dopamine hit, causing trouble at the political and sports events to draw attention to himself, as many autistic men do. They still live with a mentality of polygamy and incest in their diseased mentally ill minds. Creepy deviants. Wait until he gets into a nursing home, he will be terrorizing everyone there.
I see Kak is spreading a rumor that Charlie Kirk wanted to kill Biden. Asked to provide a link, Kak cannot. Kak provides something he puts in quote, but if he was graded on proper attribution, he failed.
But what I'm curious about is the point of Kak's argument? Is he trying to suggest Kirk got what he gave? Is that the argument that Kak wants to make, considering how many on the left are wanting more than just Kirk dead? What would be the goal of Kak's argument? It is interesting that he makes it, especially when he does so without factual support to back it up.
"No one here has "claimed that the Russians blew up their own pipeline".
LOL. Whatever. Well one of us is a liar, and one of us thinks that liars should get a paycheck.
This is the first one I could find blaming Russia, it's from Reuters, around the time. I am sure there were many more, including many comments here claiming that Russia did it, or it blew up because Russians are so. stupid they don't know how to run a pipeline.
"(Russia) can intimidate Europeans through an act of sabotage. Because if they're able to blow up these pipelines in the Baltic seabed, they could do that as well to the new pipeline," said Kristine Berzina, senior fellow for security and defence at the German Marshall Fund. - Reuters
As for the rest of your nonsense, I am under no obligation as an American citizen to believe Ukrainian propaganda just because it has been repeated so many times. But not for nothing, Germany was already vulnerable due to having shut down their nukes, this is not something they did after Ukraine blew up their main source of industrial energy, Ukraine did it while Germany was weakened.
European nations, which have been reeling under soaring energy prices caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, have noted that it is Russia, not Europe, that benefits from chaos in the energy markets and spiking prices for energy - CBS News.
"Ukraine did it"? Really? For months you insisted it was an absolute indubitable fact that the US did it, but now you say Ukraine did it as if it were a proven fact. One more time: you must have been wrong then, or be wrong now, or be wrong both times, yet you were and are absolutely sure.
As for claiming that Putin blew up Nordstream, you wrote that "people here" claimed that, and now you quote Reuters saying that. I'm pretty sure Reuters does not post here. As far as I can recall, I'm the only one here that's written about Nordstream and I have in fact never claimed to know who did it, just pointed out that Putin is in fact a plausible suspect. Got it? I've explained it to you enough times: why can't you honestly report what others say? And why does everything you write defend Putin's Russia, or Xi's China, with no exceptions?
And why can't you admit that Russia blew up the Nova Kakhovka Dam? They certainly did the other two worst ecological crimes of my lifetime, Chernobyl and the drying up of the Aral Sea. When it comes to stupid ecological crimes, it looks to me like Russia wins the trifecta.
I was always intrigued by the possibility of the Nordstream sabotage being a shoestring level operation by the Ukrainians, a "mouse that roared" moment. They had the gas/petroleum industry divers and expertise. They have a reputation for doing a lot with very little. All the necessary equipment was commercially available or already in Ukrainian naval stocks (Ukraine has the ex-Soviet Naval base infrastructure and Naval stockpiles at Mykolaiev). And the Polish government of the time (Duda's PiS) would have been happy to avoid noticing anything. The voyage of the yacht Andromeda is a scenario right out of Alistair Maclean. I hope thats what happened, but there is no conclusive resolution as of now.
Of course Ukraine may have done it, and the Ukrainian hypothesis is somewhat more likely, now that Italy is holding a Ukrainian accused of involvement, and talking about extraditing him to Germany. Besides the fact that the guilt (or credit, some might say) is still (contra some morons) very much in doubt, there are two things to say about that:
1. It's not a crime to destroy infrastructure of a country that has invaded one's own, especially when it's done with no civilian casualties.
2. Even if it were, how does Germany, or Italy, have jurisdiction? I believe the breaks were outside the 12-mile limit, in international waters.
I am very curious about what evidence Italy has to hold the Ukrainian, and how much of it will be traced back to dubious Russian sources.
I still haven't seen any evidence the Nordstream pipeline was blown by externally placed explosives. To date the only pictures I've seen are consistent with a "water hammer", relatively clean breaks at a welded seam near a pipeline bend. An external explosion would leave the pipe at the sever point bent inward, on both sides of the separation. An internal explosion would leave the pipe ends bent outward. A "water hammer" would separate the pipe at a weak point. The pipeline was built by Russians- I'm sure they were quality welds.
BTW, I don't think "The US did it." I think that the CIA may have known about it, but I think it was Poland, and perhaps Ukraine along for the boat ride. It certainly wasn't Russia, it makes zero sense, and you need look no further than Zelensky's own description of the strategic threat that the pipeline posed to know why.
The best argument that it was Russia is that if the people ever found out who really did it, and it was anybody but Russia, the whole coalition will be blown apart. Therefore it's traitorous to believe that it was anybody but Russia, even though anything Russia gained, it could also have gained by simply turning off the taps, and unrest in europe over the sanctions was growing by the week, and waiting for it to grow and do its work, while having the ability to simply turn the gas back on when the situation was ripe... Which is what Zelensky said a year ago April, that he feared.
BTW, the unrest over the sanction is still growing. Zelensky's best friends in Europe Starmer, Mertz, and Macron are all spectacularly unpopular, and holding on to power by means that would have shocked Europeans a decade ago.
"I was always intrigued by the possibility of the Nordstream sabotage being a shoestring level operation by the Ukrainians, a "mouse that roared" moment."
I think that this is where the evidence points, and the argument that they couldn't have done it due to the incredibly expensive and heavy equipment need to *100%* assure that the divers came back alive? Not really a concern with soldiers in a war like this.
Also they missed one pipeline, and blew up another one twice, and that second explosion, which happened after the NG was gone, left the evidence that showed it was just a small explosive placed on a joint, which was then amplified by the NG. If it had been the US operation described by Sy Hersh in his blog, I like to think that our divers would not have gotten disoriented and would have gotten all four of them.
I think what Sy Hersh reported as fact was actually a "how the US would have done it," scenario. But clearly the US wanted the pipeline gone, as Biden and Nuland, and others, plainly said.
I have explained more than once why blowing up Nordstream would have helped Putin even if it hurt Russia. Is Jaq too stupid to understand a very simple argument, or too dishonest to admit that his own argument has been refuted?
It's a very simple example of 'burning one's bridges'. Any top Russian who was thinking of overthrowing Putin so he could get back to the situation before the war and enjoy his villa in Italy and his yacht in the Mediterranean and so on, would have found it much more difficult once Nordstream was blown up. They could overthrow Putin and pull their troops out of Ukraine, but they could not just turn the Nordstream tap back on, as they could have before. (Similarly, the Germans can't just turn their nuclear power plants back on, because they blew up the cooling towers.) Whoever did it, blowing up Nordstream made a coup d'état less likely, and that makes Putin himself one of the main suspects.
I predict Jaq will ignore this argument, wait a week or two, and then repeat his claim that Putin couldn't have done it because he had nothing to gain, as if it had not been refuted.
And by the way, Zelenskyy's worst enemy in Europe (Orbán) is also spectacularly unpopular. And his best friends include some who are not unpopular, for instance the leaders of Finland, Poland, and the Baltics.
Also they missed one pipeline, and blew up another one twice, and that second explosion, which happened after the NG was gone, left the evidence that showed it was just a small explosive placed on a joint, which was then amplified by the NG.
How does NG explode without oxygen? There isn't any underwater.

Had the Governor of Minnesota asked me to do that, I would've done that gladly.”

Thanks. I know just what you mean. I even think of that when catching this view.
Of Fowles, he was a big deal at the time. I recall reading "Collector", "The Magus" (which is drug-trip weird), and "The French Lt's Woman" (which is its own sort of weird). The first two had a bdsm-fetish air to them IIRC.
Well, Dinky, we will be happy to note your prediction, and look forward to your re-examination of your certainty when it doesn't come true.
OK, that last bit was a joke, none of you ever have the least bit of shame about any of your ridiculous predictions when they don't come to pass.

Inga was really into those Bugaloo Boys for awhile.

Bugaloo, Groyper etal. These sort of propaganda operations about imaginary opponents were all foretold by George Orwell in both Animal Farm and 1984.
I liked the mass "But Paul Pelosi" leftist spam.
RCOCEAN II mentioned people getting fired for saying things. Well, not exactly just saying things, but justifying political assassination. Someone made a list of what people were fired for earlier this decade. 25 people, most of the cases I read about at the time. “ the word was "Groyper,"“
I like Groyper, blackened if they have it but grilled is fine.
Don't forget "excluding gang violence". Or "Including domestic violence". Statistics gets mugged whenever, wherever possible.
The Great Wheel of Fortune turns, taking down the Groypers and Boogaloo Boys and Q-Anon and bringing back the Proud Boys.
Most of these guys are probably government agents anyway and they probably appreciate the rotation in and out of the spotlight.

CC, JSM

Really?

It used to be easy to take the raw data and develop our own measure but gummint has been messing with the raw data, too
Gutfeld and Vance both embodying righteous anger is what we all need. Clarity and truth must be re-normalized.
"One thats being overlooked lately is the fact that the USDollar is way down."

Further reading:
There's another issue that is hiding in plain sight IMO.
Was that you, gadfly?
NY Post headline: “Old man who falsely claimed he shot Charlie Kirk is known ‘gadfly’ who told cops he did it to ‘draw attention from the real shooter’: report”
I have a proposal. In keeping with the professor's statement that comments may be deleted for bad faith, I propose the following (by way of example):
1. Achilles says I misquoted Charlie Kirk.
2. I respond that I never quoted him or paraphrased anything that he said. Hence it nec follows that I never misquoted him. I.e., Achilles is either lying or mistaken.
3. Ann then enters the conversation and asks Achilles to "put up or shut up."

Trying out "weird" again? How did that work last time?
Whether it's Joe Biden condemning the killing of Charlie Kirk in 2025 or Charlie Kirk calling for the killing of Joe Biden in 2024, both men have issued strong words about the other's killing.

(The Charlie Kirk Show)
Given that Europe is in an economic tailspin due to their enthusiastic support of sanctioning themselves right out of the affordable energy they used to use to run their economies, it would be kind of surprising if the US could get through this period, which includes and economic showdown with China, without some kind of downturn.
Vance quoted the Nicene Creed while guest-hosting the Charlie Kirk (pbuh) Show.

Ha Ha Kaki found a clip where Kirk says the same thing EVERY Democrat has been saying about Trump for 10 years. And Kaki's team even tried to murder him. Only person who tried to murder Biden is Dr Jill with a pillow.
Jaq:
Please stop repeating Putinite propaganda that has already been refuted.

‘You Were Warned’: Arkansas Farmers Who Voted for Trump Plead for Emergency Aid as Tariffs Push Them Into Ruins
Hundreds of Arkansas farmers gathered last week in Brookland, pleading for emergency financial relief as they struggle under mounting debt, rising costs, and collapsing crop prices.
You are going to lose 25 to 30 percent of the farmers in this country if they don’t do something,” said Scott Brown, who manages 800 acres in Biggers. “In the short term, they have no choice but to mail us a check.” No SOCIALISM for Repubs who got what they voted for and knew trump was going to do this. NO FREAKIN BAILOUT CHECKS. Send me a bailout check. WTF

yup ALL PART OF THE PLAN...Trump vows national emergency in Washington, DC over ICE dispute
Create a problem, tell people YOU are the solution, and keep moving toward Martial Law (cant have elections during Martial Law now right, and the corrupt SCOTUS signs on)
Just learned this from ChatGPT:
“ Some studies—especially those focused strictly on the U.S.—sometimes lump jihadist violence into the broader category of “right-wing terrorism” because:
• It shares certain authoritarian, anti-liberal, and reactionary features (strict social hierarchy, rejection of pluralism).”
Wow. Beware academics bearing “facts”.
I hope thats what happened, but there is no conclusive resolution as of now.
buwaya (6:16pm):
9/29/22, 1:28 PM
https://althouse.blogspot.com/2022/09/sunrise_28.html#comment-form
Release of pressure would have been the explosion at the pipe breach.
Nordstream was operating at over 1000psi apparently.
Gospace said
