"... with everyone behaving a little too respectfully. Perhaps that explains the natural — or 'natty,' if you’ve been here a while — wine craze that has taken over New York’s restaurant and bar scene in the last couple of years, attracting 20-somethings looking to drink a little more 'intentionally.' And perhaps that’s how you get something called a wine rave at Public Records, a vast multilevel bar in Brooklyn, hosted by the D.J. collective Beverages on a Saturday afternoon. Here, finance bros in light blue linen button-ups and weathered Stan Smiths milled about clutching wine glasses, sediment occasionally pooling at the bottom."

Lots of photographs at the link, including the one I captured a segment of, because I've been keeping track of men (and women) in shorts:
I'll translate my feelings into a survey:

The Althouse Community demands - and I mean demands - answers about this strewed over with hurts business.
Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot
Maybe it's fake and all for show
Sometimes you wanna go
Where everybody knows you're lame
If there is swimming involved I will wear shorts that dry quickly.
"Soft-clubbing" is what the girls tell their friends they're doing when they head over to my place, unfortunately....RR, JSM
Soft clubbing? Why yes as a man over 60 I've done my share of... What? That's what they meant?
Nevermind.
Obviously dirty minds run in the same gutter, Mr. Mosby.
So "soft-clubbing" = day drinking?
What do you think of young people going out "partying" dressed in shorts?
Not sure I understand the distinction between "partying" and "bar-hopping," because it seems like a distinction without a difference.
Also, men should be allowed to wear shorts in any social/workplace setting that women are allowed to bear their legs. Fair is fair, after all.
…because of all the Crimes and Misdemeanors talk I went and rewatched it the other night. Holy carp did people really dress like that? They did not look the slightest bit comfortable…
why do they have to make every experience, an agonizing conundrum, wear slacks wear shorts whatever,
If your club is soft then shorts are appropriate.
And if your club is slack just wear soft shorts.
@tommyesq, hear hear. Taking it further we should Make Kilts Great Again.
All the complaining about how fat people are nowadays. Zero of the people in the photos were fat. Yes tattoos, but fewer than I expected. Fashion wise, the young woman in the red cut out pants dancing. Enjoyed the photos, videos. Thanks.
…seems appropriate for the time and venue. Not exactly Easter brunch this thing…
…btw here in the south the youngin’s love dressy and not all of them are The Grove. Yah the guys are shorts but sometimes seersucker and a jacket. The girlie gurls all sundresses on the bike. Easy to tell when the gurls are New Jersey- stretchy pants and gym crap for the bikes…
I find the shoes that are barely shoes more inappropriate than the shorts. You might as well be walking around barefoot.
tommyesq beat me to it. Kids like to think they invented every fad.
I was given a glass of "natural" wine by a Gen Z 'sommelier' and there was a taste in it that reminded me of a chicken coop, and not in a good way, and she said "oh, that's because they don't use sulfites, it can have a bit of the barnyard' in it"
Maybe it was some other chemical that they withheld, but if that is what they drank in the merry days of yore, they can have it.
mmm barn floor wine. Sounds delicious, Jaq. //
Modern pop music sucks and so does the night-life that goes with it? shocking.
I don't think that anybody minds young men in shorts, it's us oldsters who maybe should accept that father time will exact his toll.
My choice wasn't offered:
Only if you want to.
LOL. Not too often do I choose the dead-last option in an Althouse poll, but today was one such day ...
If it's hot out - wear shorts. I prefer shorts that are not too short. ...that goes for all 3 sexes.
What do we mean by "young people" partying? Are we discussing high school kids? College students? Twentysomethings? And what kind of "parties" are we talking about? House parties? Frat parties? Clubbing?
Intimate get togethers?
Then too, the media give people's ideas of "partying" a fixed form that later generations won't conform to: discos in the 70s, John Hughes movies in the 80s, and heck, beach parties and hippie hangouts in the 60s.
Maybe behind all this is somebody detecting a decline of a certain type of activity among a certain demographic and then generalizing it to a whole generation (or two).

Social, maybe; but not work. I fondly remember the ‘90s when some women would wear a suit where the skirt was above the knee or even mini length. Those were the days.
In the same situation, a guy wearing a suit jacket with shorts would just look stupid. Like an Angus Young wannabe.
Garner ye rosebuds while you may.
Young man
Dances with leaves
In shorts,
In wine.
Sulfite stewed,
With hurties, strewed
He leaves
the party arty.
Or she.
If a reporter had showed up to one of our parties when I was this age, the question on everybody's lips would be "Who's the narc?"
Anyway........
I’m a Floridian. Shorts are daily wear for 95% of the year.
Is soft-clubbing a sexual orientation that progresses with the integration of Hopper's pedal in a gay sadomasochistic religious holiday to honor the transition of Uranus?
What do you think of young people going out "partying" dressed in shorts?
"Daisy Dukes", "Old Cut-offs", I lived my life enjoying young people partying in shorts.
"Guys with long hair look like girls."
"Women in miniskirts look like whores."
I don’t much care for the poll’s use of “Only if” and radio buttons. I like all of the first four excuses.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying I would do it or that it would be a good aesthetic, just saying that women are entitled to dress at work in ways that adapt to the work climate and men are forced to dress like it is late fall/winter pretty much all year.
You lost me at Only. Florida men have multiple reasons to wear shorts.
It's football season, so remember that Gators wear jorts.
It's a fact. Just search on "gators wear jorts". Only one of many examples. Explain "only" to Skeeter from Brooksville holding a twelve pack in each hand on his way to the tailgate.
tommyesq: "women are entitled to dress at work in ways that adapt to the work climate "
Except they don't. They dress for their 5-minute walk from the garage or subway stop to the office, then complain for 8 hours that the AC or heat, as the case may be, is too strong. Men dress for the 'work climate,' i.e., the temperature in the office, and suck up being too hot or cold or out of style for their 5-minute walks. RR, JSM
Interesting to see the "bar" scene seems to be collapsing after only a 60 year run (at least for the middle class).
Betty Friedan's book The Feminine Mystique:
I don't think there was anything else like it at the time. Before TGI Fridays, four single twenty-five-year-old girls were not going out on Friday nights, in public and with each other, to have a good time. They went to people's apartments for cocktail parties or they might go to a real restaurant for a date or for somebody's birthday, but they weren't going out with each other to a bar for a casual dinner and drinks because there was no such place for them to go
That interesting tidbit is on the TGI Friday's Wikipedia page. TGI Friday's opened in Manhattan in 1965 for the purpose of creating a place for the proprietor to meet some of the young single women: stewardesses, secretaries, living in the neighborhood.
It does explain the movies before 1960 where the hip urban social mingling was all portrayed as being at cocktail and dinner parties.
My senior year of high school the dress code was basically abolished because the school we merged with had a few "rebels." I wore "hot pants" (velour shorts) to school in the middle of the Wisconsin winter. For a few years after high school I remember going out on weekends wearing a very short dress with matching panties/short-short shorts or whatever you want to call them. There was a name for that outfit but I don't remember it. Now I'm old and don't give a flying leap. Sweatshirts and jeans are my favorite. Jean shorts and short sleeved tops when it's hot. I don't like crowds anymore, either.
Soft clubbing? Clubbing Them Softly? A sensitive Brad Pitt takes on baby seals?
Being married for 47 years might have something to do with it also.
Because they are comfortable and lighter than jeans. Dress pants are ok. Cause they are light.
"I’m a Floridian. Shorts are daily wear for 95% of the year."
I used to live in Phoenix. I think there were probably seven or eight days out of 7+ years that I didn't wear shorts.
Why is there not a "never" option?
Californian here ... we wear shorts most of the year here in SoCal, no issues. I guess that falls in the "everyone else is" category. I selected the last choice though. I feel like I have always been a laid-back "soft clubber".
Here, in the heat of the Virginia Summer, shorts are everywhere, all the time. Some men even wore shorts to the office where I used to work. When I was growing up, in New England, I don't believe I ever wore shorts, except for working out.
I live in AZ and I run twice a day, so I pretty much live in shorts. But if I am going out to eat or visit people or anything like that, I put on a pair of trousers. I'm not a flippin' animal.
"But if I am going out to eat or visit people..."
In my case, I didn't go out to eat and anybody I was visiting would already be wearing shorts, so...
