"We do not have the luxury to fight amongst ourselves while that thing sits in the White House."

Said Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, at a meeting of the Democratic National Committee in Minneapolis last week, quoted in "Democrats let it all out at their party meeting" (Semafor)[SEE UPDATE BELOW].

But oddly enough, "that thing" is sitting in the White House after Republicans fought amongst themselves and Walz badly lost the election to him after Democrats went out of their way to avoid fighting amongst themselves. It would make more sense to use the epithet "that thing" to refer to the unwholesome agglomeration that is the Democratic Party.
The three-day meeting of the Democratic National Committee, held to welcome new members and start building the 2028 primary calendar, was the first under new chair Ken Martin.... The party, Martin vowed, was now bringing “a bazooka to a knife fight,” and would no longer “play by the rules” if Republicans broke them.

I'm guessing Martin deployed his "a bazooka to a knife fight" metaphor — in Minneapolis — before the the shooting of children that took place nearby.

***

Bazooka (Wikipedia):
The name "bazooka" comes from an extension of the word bazoo, which is slang for "mouth" or "boastful talk"...

That's fitting, for politicians.

During World War II, "bazooka" became the universally applied nickname of the new American anti-tank weapon, due to its vague resemblance to the musical instrument invented and popularized by 1930s American comedian Bob Burns.

Video of Burns playing the bazooka here.

UPDATE: In the comments below, Olson Johnson is right! observes that Semafor has taken Walz's words out of context: "The meaning in the Semafor quote (and the title of the Althouse post) is directly opposite the meaning in the full quote." Whoa! I checked, and he's right. From the text of Walz's speech (video here):
"And I have to tell you, we can have our internal decision making, our internal healthy debates. But I refuse to believe we do not have the luxury to fight amongst ourselves while that thing sets in the White House. So, I'm not telling anyone not to raise their voice."
The author of the incredibly misleading Semafor piece was David Weigel.

And as long as I'm looking at the full text, let me also quote this:
And I will have to tell you the privilege of my lifetime was [to] stand beside someone we know was the most qualified and would have been a fantastic president in a President Harris. And look, we wouldn't wake up every day to a bunch of shit on TV and a bunch of nonsense. We would wake up to an adult with compassion and dignity and vision and leadership doing the work. Not a manchild crying about whatever's wrong with him. May his fat ankles find something today. Petty as hell.

I wasn't sure if "his fat ankles" should be capitalized. Is it a title, like His Majesty — His Fat Ankles? Anyway, I thought that was rich, Walz denouncing Trump as "petty as hell" when he had just called him "His Fat Ankles."

I put "shit" in italics because Walz said it very intensely. Listen for yourself. It's at 1:12:47 in the video.

Olson Johnson is right! म्हणाले...

I can't read the Semafor article due to a paywall. But I did read the RCP article and they transcribe Waltz's speech. The meaning in the Semafor quote (and the title of the Althouse post) is directly opposite the meaning in the full quote.

The full quote is "But I refuse to believe we do not have the luxury to fight amongst ourselves while that thing sets in the White House. So, I'm not telling anyone not to raise their voice. I'm not telling anyone to say, you are too damn old, man."

In context Waltz is in favor of Democrats to "have our internal decision making, our internal healthy debates."

So Walz DOES believe that democrats DO actually have the luxury of fighting among themselves. Which is backwards from what David Weigle wrote in his Semafor article.

@rehajm (4:59), no, their base loves policies that stick it to middle class and American blue collar workers so the policies are going to stay. Here’s Will Rahm subbing for Nellie Bowles at Bari Weiss’s Free Press:

The Democrats have a messaging problem in that they have no coherent message. That can be an asset at times—Trump’s GOP is not a model of ideological consistency—but right now, the Democrats seem unable to cobble together any sort of theme. There’s no banner. There’s barely a flyer. Where are they on immigration? On Israel? What’s their plan to lower grocery prices? Are they the party of free trade, or would they just like tariffs to be applied in a less slapdash manner?

If Trump puts a serious dent in crime in Chicago as even Mayor Bowser concedes he ,has done in Washington, then they’ll have to find a better message than “Defund the Police!” and Chicago Mayor Johnson’s assertion that putting people is “raciiiiist.”

Hillary was trying to bait Trump into doing what the neocons wanted, which was to blow up any peace deal. I personally think that Trump is highly intelligent, cares about Americans, and Ukrainians, and Hillary is a fool who was promised power if she went along with the neocons.

Remember that dehumanizing your opponent is not encouraging your supporters to assassinate him. Same as the governor of Michigan worked up a false flag kidnap plot. Somehow these tow are near the top of the Democratic Party. These are techniques perfected in the '30s in Germany.

boatbuilder म्हणाले...

With the corrected quote, he gets credit for stating the obvious in a convoluted way that doesn't really make sense.

Jaq म्हणाले...

"when the no illegals census will create more Republican congressional districts."

Remember when one of Biden's first official acts was to rejigger the census numbers that Trump's people had worked out. Then, after the congressional seats had been safely apportioned to the state, it turned out that he had mad a few mistakes. Now this is the part you are not going to believe, *all* of his mistakes were in favor of the Democrats! Basically, and coming from such an upstanding guy as Joe Biden this is hard to swallow, but Biden's people, innocently, apparently, gave the Democrats three or four extra votes in Congress, just by cooking the census.

I wonder what this playing dirty thing that they are proposing is going to look like?

Ampersand म्हणाले...

The characterization of Trump as"that thing" is notable. First, it skates by the problem of having to articulate what Trump is doing that is offensive. That way, he can't be criticized by one or another faction for understating, overstating, or misstating the problem. It also removes Trump from the human race, transforming him into a mere thing that has no entitlement to moral reciprocity. Tough Tim is laying the groundwork to justify asymmetrical conflict.
The cautionary point here is that one must be careful about starting open ended conflicts outside previous norms. The previous methods for ending conflict are no longer in force. L

Jaq म्हणाले...

The reason for all of the dirty tactics is that the Democratic Party has been taken over by its extremists, and rather than compromise with the American people, which is obviously unacceptable, they have to rejigger the population by refusing to enforce the immigration laws duly passed by Congress, and use lawfare, etc, etc.

The way back for the Democrats is to find the center, and snuggle in just a little to the left of it. What they have learned, though, is that it is far easier to go left on economics than it is to go right on culture. That's an iron law, and it redounds to the benefit of the Republicans. If we could just pry a few of the ancient warmongers like McDonnell and Graham out of their perches.

The fight that Democrats have been avoiding since 2020, is between the Progressive/Socialist Bernie bro wing and the professional consultant/corruptocrat wing of the Party. The latter can see that the flaming Socialist (Bernie in 2020, AOC in 2028) is unelectable, even though that's what the Democrat primary voters want. So, all the jiggery-pokery that ended up with Biden in 2020 and Harris in 2024, and the need to stifle all intraparty doubts or debate. That "thing in the White House" is the only thing holding the Democrat Party together. I see no reason to expect that any "centrist" (i.e., dull Party functionary like Biden: Klobuchar, Walz or Butteigig) will get the nomination in 2028. All the energy of that Party is with the socialists and the identity groups.

How did the Democrat party insiders miss all of Biden's medical issues? There ought to be a big internal stink about that.

Ted Kennedy ran a primary against Jimmy Carter. 44 years later, the Democrats have become far more anti-democratic. And brazenly dishonest. And the party was caught with its pants down, trying to run a senile old man up on the debate stage.

I don't think people are leaving the Democrat party because of a sharp ideological change. It's outright embarrassment.

Bob Boyd म्हणाले...

The original saying was, "Don't bring a knife to a gunfight".
If you say you are going to be bringing a bazooka to a knife fight, one that you were challenged to and accepted, it means you know you can't win in a fair fight. It means you are not going to follow any rules. You are just going to destroy the opponent with overkill. It means you recognize your opponent has skills you can't hope to match and you are terrified and desperate.
Once you show up and obliterate your opponent in such a manner, all his friends and supporters are going to have something to say about it. Now you're going to have to obliterate them too. And they are going to bring the biggest weapons they can find and they are not going to recognize any rules either.
What you have done is, you have started a war.

Maybe Walz wouldn't be so cavalier about a war if he had seen one up close, but he hasn't.
