Victoria stirred the pot a little in the Lea Thomas post.
Someone should rank the pot-stirrers, commenters who believe most of what they post, but sometimes shit-post for fun.
In my five or more years here, off the top of my head, Im'm gonna say the ones who create the commotion ..
Ritmo
Chuck
Inga

Vicky.

Ritmo, Chuck, Inga subject to freaking out when pushed too long or hard. They will swear and call names and end up insisting Althouse delete your comments.
The others are fun to play with but generally aren't capable
of surviving a back and forth for more than a dozen comments or so.
Of the current commenters, I personally have to go with Inga as #1.
Although she rarely comments these days, each time she does will generate plenty of response.
Vicky outranks Kak and Dinky, 'cause she will argue for a while. Kak and Dinky post longer stuff, but generally leave soon after posting.

Donald Trump has announced that he has convinced Israel to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza for 60 days.

This will give the HAMAS terrorist organization 60 days to regroup, tend to their wounds, re-arm, move the hostages they hold to new secret locations, etc. etc. etc.

HAMAS, of course, is a US-designated terrorist organization. And Donald Trump has pressured Israel to stop killing them.

In much the same way that Barack Obama parachuted literal pallets of freshly-printed US $100 bills on Iran to help them build nuclear weapons to fire on us one day.

So we have that going for us.

Which is not good.

In my engineering world of energy use there is a huge discussion going on today about the future of solar and wind projects due to the wounding of the economics in the Big Beautiful Bill.

I thought people would want to know how quickly old assumptions are out the window. Those big, shipping-container size batteries have only been added to the grid in about the last 7 years, and their numbers have grown quickly.
They move energy from the cheap, plentiful hours of the day to the peak demand, expensive hours. Solar arrives during the cheap morning hours, but it is also cheap to run gas generators at their sweet spot of loading in the morning.

In my opinion the roles of gas as primary and solar as secondary have flipped. The price of solar panels is way down, and the use of batteries is changing the rhythm of the day.
Solar is now primary to be used as much as nature will give us and gas is secondary when primary energy is not enough.

Also, there is almost nothing in the pipeline for at least five years other than solar and batteries. All this talk about nuclear and the money being spent now is not producing electricity. It is just paying consultants, lobbyists, and regulators. The next new kWh of nuclear is hoped for in the year 2030 and coming from a demonstration project.

All this talk about new gas-fueled power plants is also out of proportion to results. Gas turbine manufacturers are ramping up production as fast as they can but the lead time right now is measured in years if you order a new turbine. They are not easy to build.

Solar plus batteries is the only game in town.

To summarize this and the rest of what you wrote- solar and wind won't be built by anyone seeking profit from them because they cost more then conventional power. With enough output- built only because they are subsidized- they destabilize the energy grid. Spain and Portugal recently had a large part of their grid go down, hard, because of this.

If the economics of wind/solar with battery storage made sense- every one of us living in ruralville on acreage instead of lots would be taking ourselves off the grid. We're not. We're already our own water and sewer departments- adding electricity wouldn't be terribly difficult. Having 120V DC appliances available would help- a lot- for people wanting to live off grid. All battery and supercapacitor is DC. LED lighting works better on DC. TBH, so does incandescent- and the bulbs last longer. LED bulbs without all the electronics in them to convert AC to DC would last longer. It's the electronics that fail.

Other things to think about. Chinese leadership is changing. But the process is opaque and no one showing the evidence it's changing has any idea who's going to end up the leader. There are numerous self proclaimed experts on China pointing out the visible changes, and admitting they can't predict where it's going.

And the arsonist and fireman shooter? Disappearing from media coverage as fast as possible. Estranged from family and apparently mentally ill/trans. Which is repeating itself since trans is mental illness... But, or course, all social media has been scrubbed.

The immediate scrubbing of all social media for killers needs to stop. The social media companies can freeze an account, allowing nothing to be added. But what's already there should remain readily visible to anyone to whom it was readily visible to before. Even if they weren't viewing it before. Pattern recognition might kick in where people can see- Hey- I know someone with media just like this!

We asked a VP in the energy industry how many of their alternative energy projects were economical without subsidies. “Zero”.

Does Solar and Wind provide more energy than other forms of energy? Yes. There are many days it can provide over 50% of electricity needs in areas with heavy adoption. But they provide almost zero electricity during extreme weather events, which is when people need electricity for survival. They also require more land to provide that electricity over any other energy source, including agriculture to feed humans. Solar and Wind simply are unsustainable as energy sources because of their land requirement.

Kakistocracy म्हणाले...

I guess this is what 'the government not picking winners and losers' looks like to the MAGA crowd.

Large scale industrial projects are how you get energy independence as a nation, it's how you power growths in energy demand (AI) and build a more resilient grid. Residential systems that can power the full home are largely limited based on geographics, meanwhile a 1 MW plant (4-5 acres worth of panels) can power ~200.

Rising costs are more related to an aging infrastructure and years of doing nothing about it (i.e., actual transmission wires) and supply/demand (demand rising faster than new plants can be built).

CBS settles with Trump for $30 million.

Now Trump should revoke their broadcast license as they are in violation of the Federal Communications Act of 1934, which requires CBS and other broadcasters to operate "in the public interest."

Trying to rig our elections is not "in the public interest."

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the FBI is reviewing "tens of thousands of videos of [Jeffrey] Epstein with children or child porn" and there are "hundreds of victims" as she addressed concerns about the delay to the full release of the case files.

The Trump Administration pledged full transparency of the Epstein files.

"The president ordered them released, the attorney general ordered them released, we all know they have not been released," said Republican House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer.

There must be a lot there that the Trump administration does not want you to know about.

No. It is an extremely short term and expensive solution. And when the subsidies dry up you'll be left sobbing on the curb. Small nuclear is going to change things -fast.

Josephbleau म्हणाले...

Lithium ion batteries need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years, lead acid twice as often. Not going to be replaced, there will be no subsidy for it. Small nuke is the way to go, build them in factories and put them in 2 or 3 shipping containers. Minimal field construction that breaks schedule and budget.

I hope someday space based solar with microwave downlink will be used. Satellite solar panels last forever.

AI is growing the need for power and they won’t be tricked into being satisfied with bullshit power service.
