"Even low doses of CBD may cause harm to the liver in some people, FDA study finds."

NBC News reports.
Scientists from the Food and Drug Administration’s Division of Applied Regulatory Science carried out a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial last year to assess how low-dose CBD affects liver function in a group of healthy middle-aged men and women.... The goal was to give them a typical amount that might be used by consumers.... While the vast majority of people in the trial were unaffected, 5% showed greatly elevated levels of the liver enzyme aminotransferase, a known marker of liver cell damage or inflammation.... Women appeared to be more vulnerable than men....

How does that compare to the damage that alcohol or acetaminophen does?

interesting use of numbers.
If 5% of alcohol users (or tobacco users) were affected,
would we say "the vast majority are unaffected"
one out of twenty seems pretty high

I've now met a couple dozen people experimenting with CBD and genuine cannabis in an attempt to wean themselves off of prescription meds with unpleasant side effects.

Anecdotally, a third found it a totally effective replacement, another third partially effective, and the final third found it no help at all.

It's an area worthy of rigorous study, that is if Pharma doesn't submarine the investigation.

Women hardest hit - seems to be true for once. I'm glad people are doing more medical research into MJ and its heath effects. It should be obvious that any mind alterting drug will affect your health if used in signifcant quantities. You're basically poisoning your body.

But Big MJ (talk about evil corporations) wants you to think its safe, harmless and maybe even good for you (LOL).
This is actually connected to the previous post about men feeling worthless due to the lack of careers and good jobs. Just medicate them with MJ, Booze, and Porn. That seems to be the Plan.

The vast majority of NBC's advertising revenue comes directly from the pharmaceutical industry. If they are crapping on CBD, they are only doing so because that's what the pharmaceutical industry has directed them to do.

Otherwise, NBC would have spiked the story. Nothing that NBC News does hurts the pharmaceutical industry. They are controlled by it, via their outsized advertising revenue.

what about alcohol? Well Atkually, the vast majority of people can drink significant amounts of booze for years and not damage their livers. And most people can booze it up till age 35-40 without any significant health effects. After that.....

Jack kerouac, who I just read about, got drunk every night on a more or less regular basis from age 18-48. Then he got cirrohis of the liver and died. Also see Chris Hitchens. Hemingway was an even bigger drunk, and made it to 62 without liver damage.

I'm neither pro nor anti cannabis, but I remain gobsmacked by how little serious research has been done on its medical effects. Of the research that has been done, a very large portion is of poor quality.

I say this as someone who helped a medical cannabis company build its technology stack around a decade ago. It may have been when I first started to think that laws and common sense no longer mattered. Very cool people and a lot of fun, but the veneer of science was more important than the science itself.

For those pointing fingers at the pharma industry: mostly the industry doesn't care, since CBD and medical cannabis are generic. Therefore, there is no incentive to research its safety. The traditional pharma industry did spend quite a lot of money on research into specific cannabinoids around twenty years ago, but it generally was not productive. There's still some work being done.

Science is about asking questions.

A New Statesman columnist got hold of Winston Churchill's menus and liquor-store bills and calculated what Winston drank on a typical day. Then he set out to spend a day drinking like Churchill. Started with a whisky and soda upon rising.

He never really got drunk during the experiment, but all he could do at the end was sit on the sofa and watch Death in Paradise.

Winston lived to be 90.

Per Grok:

There's no single "average" CBD dosage, as it varies greatly depending on individual factors and the desired effect. However, a common starting point for beginners is 10-20 mg per day, gradually increasing until the desired effect is achieved. Some users may find relief with doses as low as 20 mg, while others may require upwards of 100 mg or more

The article is unclear whether the 350mg was weekly for four weeks or daily for four weeks. Typical journalist would be hard-pressed to understand the difference, much less appreciate the significance thereof.

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

BTW, Grok tries to minimize the risk by stating that its "only" 5.6 percent that got liver damage and that "its asymptomatic and easily reversible". First moderate liver damage is usually asymptomatic - when you start getting symptoms you've incurred a lot of damage. Second, there's no proof that any of this is "easily reversible" - maybe it is. Maybe its not.

Finally, this is only a 4 week study. Imagine the damage if you did this for 40 weeks.

Yep. I had to do my own research to find out its 350mg per day. And this is considered "Low to moderate" for clinical usage.

The cholesterol hypothesis is dead. They don't even defend it anymore. The original science underlying it would make Mendel blush.

Cholesterol is a basic building block for most cells in your body. It is particularly necessary for brain function. 75% of the cholesterol in your body is produced in your liver. It is highly regulated. Diet has nothing to do with cholesterol levels.

Statins are the biggest snake oil scam in history.

CBD is basically hemp extract. Under the 2018 Agriculture Improvement Act, it can be sold with virtually no regulations, as long as it contains 0.3% or less of THC (the main psychoactive ingredient in pot).

While the pot connection gives it a certain cachet, CBD is probably no more effective for pain, inflammation or other health conditions than any other nutritional supplement. And while this isn't widely known, a lot of nutritional supplements can harm some users' livers in high enough doses -- including basic ones like turmeric or green tea.

Controlling blood sugar is the ticket to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Gemini AI: "Yes, Metamucil can help lower blood sugar levels, primarily due to its psyllium fiber content. Psyllium fiber forms a gel in the digestive system, which can slow down the absorption of sugar, helping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. "

Howard म्हणाले...

Apples and oranges, Ted.

Gemini AI: Hemp oil and CBD oil, while both derived from the cannabis plant, differ significantly in their composition and intended uses. Hemp oil is primarily extracted from hemp seeds and is rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. CBD oil, on the other hand, is extracted from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of the hemp plant and contains higher concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid known for its potential therapeutic benefits.

Gregor Mendel does not deserve your slam. Contrary to some people's mythology, he did excellent science—a third of a century before anyone was prepared to accept the results. Then, in one year—1900—3 people independently confirmed and duplicated his results in heredity.

The problem is this only works on people who don't think for themselves.

75% of the cholesterol in your body is produced by your liver. That is why Statins "work." Your diet has very little to nothing to do with cholesterol levels.

All of the "low fat diet" bullshit came from the Sugar industry who literally paid for all of that peer reviewed "research" you are referring to. And almost all of that peer reviewed "research" on diet is based on survey data.

These are the same researchers who came up with masks stop COVID and 6 foot distancing research.
