Starting my second week of retirement, since the first was occupied with travel to a funeral and baptism, I've been getting in MWF running and walking, TT just walking, Saturday maybe some walking, Sunday- rest. And my knees have been telling on me. My youngest is just our of the Army- staying here while job hunting. A few times as my knees creaked getting up I've said "Feets don't fail me now!" And I asked if knew the origin of the expression. He did not. He got an explanation- from vaudeville, and early motion pictures, usually uttered by black actors fleeing something fearful or the police, attributed to Stepin Fetchit (IRL Lincoln Perry). Or alternatively to Mantan Moreland. And I do remember the bits as being funny to the point of hilarious. So looked it up on both Google and Duckduckgo which both carefully explained the racist origins of the term. And found numerous music videos with that term in the title. And absolutely no film links to show him. None. Almost as if it could be talked about, but verboten to be seen.
Anyone know a search site that will find such clips?
You probably shouldn't be asking questions like that, you'll just end up getting your name put on a list. The people in charge of the internet are confident in their ability to discern what things are okay for you to see and what are not. Just roll with it.

I have been devoting a lot of my energy to gardening this year, and I have a bunch of lettuce plants. It had never occurred to me, until my daughter showed me, that when you have lettuce plants, you don't have to harvest them all at once, in a single, apocalyptic act of vegicide. You can pluck one or two leaves at a time, to put on your sandwich, or to make a salad, leaving the rest of the plant to continue growing. This works especially well if you have a lot of them, as a leaf or two from each will make a nice salad.
It has been noted, that humans are the only predators that manage to stay on good terms with their prey until they are ready to kill it. I guess that doesn't apply to plants. Plants are always on good terms with everyone.

This is what makes it possible for human activities to decrease the entropy of our portion of the Universe. We are third-level free-riders on the Sun.
About immigration. I've read on Twitter just today that (a) net immigration will be negative this year for the first time in 50+ years, and (b) more than a million illegals have self-deported since Inauguration Day - less than 5 months! A mildly exponential increase in ICE raids and involuntary deportations should result in a mildly exponential increase in self-deportations. The curves need not be all that steep, a long as they're exponential, i.e. concave on top and heading up. Keep the pressure on!

Watched the Us open Golf tournament yesterday, and it was great to see JJ Spaun win it. Lots of 3rd round leaders collapse in the last round, especially at the US Open. And it looks Spaun was going to do the same thing. 5 bogeys in the first six holes. And 5 over par going into the 12th hole.
But then Spaun turned it on, 4 birdies in the last 7 holes. A 40 foot putt on 12. A 22 foot birdie on 14. A 309 yard killer drive on 17 that gave him a birdie, and then a 64 foot birdie on 18.
Only 1 bogey in the last 9 holes. An amazing performance and a well deserved win. Good to see someone step up instead of wilt under the pressure of a major, like Phil Nickelson or Greg Norman.

I have a situation: my neighbor, a woman of tender heart but delicate sensibilities, asked me yesterday if I would try to rescue a baby bird she found while walking. To me, well, many baby birds don't make it - if they fall from the nest, sad but true, they die. So I figured I would find the bird, see that it was near death (or possibly already dead (it was in a driving rain), and be able to report to her regretfully.
But she came with me! So I put the bird in a box and brought it home, still expecting that it would die imminently.
At home, I put some stuff stuff in the box and waited - but it didn't die. My husband helpfully looked up what baby birds can eat (we couldn't find a single worm or bug, which, considering that mother birds regurgitate food for their babies, don't they?, was probably good), so I made up a little high-protein mush, and lo and behold, the bird started begging for food and ate a teaspoon or so before I went to bed.
I left it outside overnight in the covered box so it would be warmer (I figured a/c would not be beneficial). This morning, yup, it's alive, more active, and eating mush again.
What the heck is my endgame here?!

Iman - what I'm saying is, I don't particularly want to hand-raise a baby bird, so how do I extricate myself? Though I don't know that there's a way that lets me off the hook, now that I took on the obligation.
I love my neighbor, but I really wish I "hadn't seen her text" for a few hours!
If you're going to pose as an expert on geopolitics and strategy, as the noxious biting insect does at 1:29am, you should try not to demonstrate gross ignorance of geography by implying that Iran borders Syria. Even the shortest route from one to the other requires a 100-mile drive through Iraqi Kurdistan, which is not open to Iranian troops.
