"Elon was 'wearing thin,' I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!"

Writes Trump, at Truth Social.

Meanwhile, at X, Elon is posting about Trump more than I'm keeping up with.

Everyone was talking about how close they were — too close! — and now they're big enemies.

Are you watching these 2 drama queens? If so, carry on in the comments. I'm averting my eyes.

Two lovers spurned

Several months of love
But all at once
You two had enough

"2 drama queens." One of whom is serious. The other is less serious but understands the public, which has no taste for real cuts, and politicians, who worry about reelection by a public that wants the money, and American politics, where you succeed better if you promise more of other people's money (or alternatively, no tax on tips etc. etc.). But maybe Elon's pressure can help turn public opinion around. Of course, not just Trump, but Dems will vilify him, and have. But Musk has guts.

Musk is right about the debt ceiling and Trump's bill is about what can realistically be expected. As for the tax credit for EV's, I can see Musk being upset from Tesla's point of view. However if Musk can get his autonomous vehicle drive to level 4+ it will just be a matter of time before insurance companies will demand that it comes with new cars. I see Tesla making a ton of money licensing and or manufacturing the systems for other makes and using his AI system. Autonomous Driving is not limited to electric vehicles only.

I'm guessing this is mostly theater that benefits both Musk and Trump:

1. Musk and his companies benefit from lessened consumer rage. He wants to sell to both left and right customers

2. Trump benefits because DOGE was becoming a liability and a distraction. It has become clear to everyone DOGE could only deliver modest cuts.

3. Trump benefits because the anti-Trump screamers are distracted by yet another triviality for a while.

Downsides? Just some bad publicity, which neither seems to care about. Each is carrying on with real projects that actually matter to them.

He is being dragged by Netanyahu towards a war with Iran, which would be a disaster.

It wasn't just Democrats benefitting from all of the corruption and complete lack of standard accounting controls that Doge uncovered.

Trump needs a vacation, and I don't see the world letting up on him, so yeah, I think that Lindsey Graham is privately threatening Trump with impeachment and removal if he doesn't play ball with the neocons.

The tragedy of Trump is that he has taken on too much, and so has made way too many enemies. That these people are execrable, and are, in fact, the enemies of the American people, doesn't change the calculus.

I'm surprised you think this. For the most part, President Trump's enemies in Canada, the EU, the Democratic Party, Zelensky's Ukraine, the New York oligarchy, and the NGO/ academic sphere are all strongly linked with each other. It is a hard battle but the alternative is surrender. Weakening one dramatically weakens the others. And what they all have in common is existential dependence on American subsidy. China is their ally for the sake of convenience, but as China loses popularity in America that won't last. By contrast, friends in the Arab world, Asia, Eastern Europe, and his American voting base are much more reliable.

It should be noted that not only are President Trump's tariffs very popular with the American working man, the Democrat response to them is simply insane flailing. Boosts to the American economy in general and American industry in particular might permanently relegate the Democrats to the lunatic fringe while their DEI coalition cannibalizes itself.

Howard म्हणाले...

In other news, president Trump today had a press conference with the chancellor of Germany. They spoke of mutual agreement for military security and economic growth. The chancellor reminded trump it was just a few days before the D-Day anniversary. Donald said it probably wasn't a very good day for the chancellor. In responses to questions about Musk and Doge and the big beautiful bill was an app prologue where Trump indicates his friendship with musk was behind and that although musk hasn't been personal he said that Elon would get personal very soon. This was after Donald blamed elon's grief with the BBB all had to do with subsidies and appointments.

I never said that the Tet offensive was a military success, but I think that it was a propaganda success. Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Musk is correct about the Big Beautiful Bill. It is a joke but the truth is that the BBB was about all that was going to get a majority of the House- otherwise it will just be continuing resolution after continuing resolution til the sun extinguishes itself. Trump has squandered a big opportunity but that opportunity always required the assent of Congress and if you can't even get Congress to pass recission bills suggested by DOGE then what is the point of anything?

wildswan म्हणाले...

I'm with Althouse; I am simply turning my head away.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

To get the fiscal house of the United States in order is going to require either a President or a House majority to say enough is enough and shut the government down for months or even a year or more. It takes a strong man or men to do this and I don't see it in D.C. If Trump tries to be that man, Congress in its current makeup would likely just trump his veto with 2/3 votes. A House leadership trying this has, at most 2 years before being turned out. Like it or not, we do get the government we deserve- good and hard.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

Otto von Bismarck once called politics “the art of the possible, the attainable.” I’m not sure Elon Musk understands that, or grasps what it means. When he took over Twitter he sacked anyone and everyone who was even slightly out of line in dealing with him, and he could get away with that because if you mistakenly fire someone that it turns out later you need badly, it isn’t hard to find people eager to work for a tech firm in Silicon Vslley. The federal government workforce, while certainly bloated, operates under Civil Service rules, and what a President can and cannot do is very circumscribed. There is an apocryphal story about a government worker who killed his boss but Civil Service rules prevented him from being fired, and nearly everyone in the District of Columbia is aware of it. Based on stories I’ve seen first hand or heard of second hand, that story is shockingly plausible.

Trump learned a lot, the hard way, during his first term. Musk maybe should consider that the federal government doesn’t work like a techie business, and listen using his ears instead of his mouth.

Both the gloating and the schadenfreude is the sure sign of a mark advertising their readiness to be chumped.

Balfegor म्हणाले...

Trump is perfectly happy to drop rhetorical bombs on people and then turn around and be friendly to them again a minute later -- it's a kind of performance to him, and I don't think his rhetoric is necessarily reflective of his true feelings one way or the other.

My impression of Musk is that he's much more impulsive, verbally, much less calculated in what he says publicly, and much more likely to double down and become defensive about things he has said in the past (cf. that whole bizarre episode with the rescue diver he called "pedo guy").

So from Musk's end, I think the rupture is real. From Trump's end, I imagine he's probably thinking about it like a useful but somewhat irritating teenager acting out.

However, when President Trump nominated Acosta for the position of Secretary of Labor in his first cabinet, journalists suddenly began investigating third-hand stories about Epstein and Trump. The Mar-a-Lago parties, the accuracy of Epstein's pilot logs, and the Katie Johnson rape by Trump at Epstein's mansion all got chased but were either not true or well covered up. But Epstein had powerful friends who didn't want to be mentioned. Ghislaine Maxwell's trial details and conviction didn't help either. Elmo the Musk may have read the Epstein papers, so stay tuned for round two.

No they haven’t, not in the sense you are using the term. That’s like saying the police are arresting innocent people every time they stop the wrong person for questioning.

It’s cute the way you types try to pretend Trump and Epstein were great buddies because they sometimes went to the same galas.

I don't waste any time on X. I don't want an electric car. YMMV, but for me if taxes go up or down a bit it's not a big deal. Musk did a big service by shining a light on egregious waste. Trump has delivered on border control (if not on the other things he promised early). I think this is staged. Just a way for Musk to get back to his main gig and take the heat off (Molotovs do generate a lot) Tesla dealerships.

Trump was the only celebrity who responded negatively towards Epstein. He banned him from Mar-a-Lago because of Epstein's behavior towards young women. Epstein and Weinstein sat on the board of The Robin Hood Foundation, the largest and most prestigeous foundation in NYC, a small, powerful board of important people, including famous news anchors and actresses. They both spent years being given the green light by these board members to focus on projects in middle and high schools. Ask Gweneth Paltrow or Katie Couric why they handed over access to poor public schoolchildren to these two men. And try telling the truth.

It is clear that every billionaire who touches politics does it in large part to preserve their wealth and defend against government actions (e.g., anti-trust). This applies to Gates, Bloomberg, Soros, Musk, Dimon, and indeed Trump. This also applied to the old-school barons of industry such as Stanford, Carnegie, JP Morgan, etc.

It isn't different from the non-billionaires who get into politics to enrich themselves either. See the Clintons, Obamas, Bidens, Pelosis, and how "election denier" Stacey Abrams got $2B and funneled millions to her lawyer friend.

Power corrupts. It's easier for a rich man pass through the eye of a needle than stay out of politics.

We know Republicans won’t be demanding that the Epstein files get released anymore.

You don't know shit.

We want them released. We've always wanted them released.

If there was any dirt on Trump, it would've been leaks years ago.

Release the damn files.
