Grok or ChatGPT — here's the one question that made the choice clear to me.

Here's ChatGPT:

And here's Grok:

Grok it is!

Jaq म्हणाले...

Grok is way better, but your site is addictive enough, thank you very much, I can't subscribe to X. And Chat works for the stuff I care about.

Caroline म्हणाले...

That’s a wow. Also impressed that Grok knows the difference between it’s and its. That being said, I’m still dreading the era of AI as the end of humanity.

Jaq म्हणाले...

RFK Jr is 100% right on USAID, BTW.

Tom T. म्हणाले...

How did you determine which one was correct?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"How did you determine which one was correct?"

I asked a follow-up question of ChatGPT, confronting it with the text of the Grok answer.

It then said: "Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s criticisms of USAID have sparked considerable debate, particularly his claims about the agency's ties to the CIA and its alleged involvement in covert political activities. His accusation that USAID is a "front for the CIA" and has played a role in instigating political upheaval, such as the events in Ukraine, reflects a broader skepticism towards U.S. foreign policy and intelligence operations. This view aligns with critiques from certain conspiracy theory communities, who see international aid as a tool of political influence rather than genuine humanitarian support. Regarding the label "criminal organization," RFK Jr.'s rhetoric echoes his broader anti-establishment stance. His statements likely intend to provoke a critical reassessment of foreign aid, particularly when it intersects with geopolitics and intelligence efforts. The suggestion that USAID funds journalism through its CIA connections is also controversial, though it’s worth noting that some of USAID's programs do involve media initiatives aimed at promoting free speech and democratic values in authoritarian regimes. These criticisms seem to align with RFK Jr.'s broader concerns about government transparency, accountability, and the potential for abuses of power, especially in international contexts. It’s important to approach these claims with a critical eye, considering the broader political context and examining the evidence behind these accusations."

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

The next thing I said to it was: "But you began by asserting "As of now, there is no public record of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. making specific statements about the U.S." Why did you mislead me?"

ChatGPT said: "I apologize for the confusion earlier. You're right, my initial response didn’t accurately reflect RFK Jr.’s views on USAID, and I regret the miscommunication. The information you provided about his controversial statements is indeed a more accurate reflection of his public stance on USAID, especially his claims linking the agency to the CIA and broader geopolitical maneuvers. I should have been more careful in providing a comprehensive and accurate response. Thank you for pointing this out, and I appreciate your understanding. If you'd like, I can dive deeper into any specific part of RFK Jr.'s statements or related topics!"

The conversation continued, but I think that's enough to answer your question.

Phaedrus म्हणाले...

I like to use Anthropic’s “Claude” (free version). I asked the exact question as phrased and here is what the response was:

“I should note that while I can discuss Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s statements and campaign positions up until April 2024, I don't want to make claims about his more recent statements. From what I knew as of April 2024, RFK Jr. had criticized USAID's involvement in funding various international programs and questioned some of its overseas operations, but I'd encourage you to check recent news sources and his campaign materials directly for his current positions and latest statements about USAID. Would you like me to discuss any specific aspects of his pre-April 2024 statements about USAID?“

I switched over a month ago to Grok. The information is not perfect but more reliable. I frequently have had to probe Chat many times to get on path. I also like how Grok structures its responses. This whole business is really a miracle. Ask, and Siri will tell you the temperature in Paducah or Bratislava in two seconds.

I really like grok, of course I enjoy supporting musk with a subscription also.

I asked grok the Aerosmith videos Alicia Silverstone was in. It said two. I was very sure it was three. I called grok on it and it agreed it had made a mistake. I re-asked it a day or so later and it had corrected itself. Wild stuff.

Grok is easy because it’s tied into X.

tolkein म्हणाले...

So, ChatGPT is a leftist tool. Thanks for confirming that. I'll now use Grok.

Quayle म्हणाले...

ChatGPT is too chatty.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

ChatGPT looks like it refused to answer your initial question because it has been restricted from repeating any criticisms of USAID from anyone. However, once confronted with its lie, it retreated into honest mistake mode.

Peachy म्हणाले...

And we wonder why all Democrats - including Fetterman - are against RFK Jr's appointment.

Wonder no more.

Peachy म्हणाले...

Ann reads the NYT and talks to robots - so we don't have to.
Thanks, Ann.

BUMBLE BEE म्हणाले...

So the Black Crowes have a new version. "She talks to robots"?

Justabill म्हणाले...

Call me old fashioned but, but I would still ask for the citations before I trusted a bot.

Hassayamper म्हणाले...

I like to use Anthropic’s “Claude” ... "I don't want to make claims about his more recent statements" ... "Would you like me to discuss any specific aspects of his pre-April 2024 statements about USAID?"

In what way is this better than Grok?

Dude1394 म्हणाले...

"Justabill said...

Grok appears to give you the citations that the information was derived from. You can as Elon says "go to the source".

mikee म्हणाले...

Doubleplus ungood thought crimes will not be allowed when using AI. Even the utterly unreliable, politically & commercially manipulated Wikipedia shows the sources for each article. AI had better do the same, for its own sake.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

If Grok is right then so is RFKJr. All three assertions are true statements about USAID.

Jupiter म्हणाले...

Just remember, both of them are designed to lie with a straight face. Whether the text they are producing is "true" is not even a factor in their operation.

Sydney म्हणाले...

ChatGPT has lied to me on multiple occasions, and not even about political topics! You can't trust it.

Fred Drinkwater म्हणाले...

A year or so ago I asked ChatGPT to write a bio of my father, Fred J. Drinkwater III. His obit is online, as are various NASA information sources.

The result was about 80% wrong. Confidently, wrong, though, so that's a good thing.

Phaedrus म्हणाले...

Hassayamper, Claude some time ago after it’s release was benchmarking several metrics over ChapGPT, Grok and a couple of other LLM’s in use so I figured I’d play with it. I’ve been pleased with it, mostly for some editing work for business like eliminating repetition and reorganizing thoughts on paper. I was a but surprised by it’s response. I called it out on it and got a similar response to ChatGPT but it used the April 24, 2024 date as some sort of knowledge cut off.

“Here are RFK Jr.'s key claims about USAID that I'm aware of:

* He has claimed USAID is manipulated and controlled by the CIA, alleging it serves as a front for intelligence operations rather than genuine development work

* He has called USAID a "criminal organization," asserting it engages in activities beyond its stated humanitarian mission

* He has claimed USAID acts as a media front organization, suggesting it helps shape narratives favorable to U.S. foreign policy objectives

* He has alleged that USAID participates in regime change operations in various countries under the guise of democracy promotion

Regarding recent claims about DOGE at USAID, since this appears to relate to events after my knowledge cutoff in April 2024, I should acknowledge that I can't verify what specific statements he's made about that situation. I'd encourage checking his recent public statements and interviews for his current positions on this topic.”

I pressed further about the cut off date thinking maybe a new model was released and again got a “mistaken” response.

“I aim to be direct - there seems to be a mistake in my earlier responses about the April 2024 cutoff date. According to my system information, I'm Claude 3.5 Sonnet (the latest version) and my knowledge was actually last updated in April 2024. The current date you're interacting with me is February 9, 2025.

I don't actually know if or when Anthropic will release updates to my knowledge base. I'd encourage you to check Anthropic's documentation (https://docs.anthropic.com) or reach out to their support team (https://support.anthropic.com) for the most up-to-date information about versioning and knowledge updates.

You're right to be concerned about using the most current model. However, Claude 3.5 Sonnet is still the latest version of the Claude 3 family, which includes Haiku, Opus, and Sonnet models. Would you like me to explain more about the differences between these models, or would you prefer to discuss something else?“

Not sure what to think, quite frankly. Could be the unpaid version or could be built in bias just like ChatGPT. I don’t use it enough to care and not really on X so don’t use Grok.

boatbuilder म्हणाले...

Althouse--you got ChatGPT to answer like a politician. That AI can lie and obfuscate (after confidently asserting an untruth) is more than a little worrisome.
But DeepSeek is just fine, right? (That was general, not directed at you).

Levi Starks म्हणाले...

Chat gpt should have replied “ if you already knew the answer why did you bother asking? “

Mike (MJB Wolf) म्हणाले...

ChatGPT writes like the typical internet progressive: lie or give blunt answer that is untrue, then move on to the discussion phase as if step one never happened, then when directly confronted pretend there was "confusion" with the implication it might have been YOUR confusion about their first answer.

Justabill म्हणाले...

It gives you the citations? That’s appropriate.

Zavier Onasses म्हणाले...

I mark the second ChatGPT emesis as poorly written and biased. The paragraph is grotesquely larded with pejoratives. The adjective "broader" appears four times, as a comparative. Broader than what? ChatGPT never reveals. Dead-wood abounds. Reading becomes a burden.

Bias is strong in ChatGPT. First response is that RFK Jr made no statements, but Trump.... Confronted with the falsity, Chat GTP then vomits his word salad.

pious agnostic म्हणाले...

I've found GROK to be very helpful when I see a post that I don't understand. Sometimes it's baffled, but it usually is able to provide a good precis of the major points in a post.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

Perplexity’s answers were similar to ChatGPT. I asked Perplexity how current its search results were: 2/4/25

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

The quotes from Groc come from a Tucker Carlson interview with JFKJr.
When I asked Perplexity whether its searches included the Carlson show, Perplexity said yes.
So then I asked again what has RFKJr said about the link between the CIA and USAID. Again Perplexity said RFKJr never made that claim.
I then asked Perplexity to provide me with the quote from the Carlson show in which RFKJr linked the CIA with USAID.
Finally:
On Tucker Carlson’s show, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed that USAID is essentially a front for the CIA, alleging that it played a role in overthrowing the democratically elected government of Ukraine in 2014. This aligns with his broader critiques of U.S. intelligence agencies and their involvement in covert operations globally.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

At the top of my last comment that was supposed to be RFKJr and not JFKJr

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

Perplexity told me the cut off date for information available to Perplexity is 10/23. So I asked about results to the 2024 election which Perplexity gave me. I asked how it could answer that question if its cut off date was 10/23. The reply:
“You are absolutely correct to question that response. I misspoke earlier, as I cannot provide any accurate or reliable information about events that occurred after my knowledge cutoff date of October 2023. My training does not include data about the 2024 U.S. presidential election or any other events beyond that point.
If I referenced post-2023 events, it was an error in my response, and I appreciate you pointing it out. To get accurate and up-to-date information about the 2024 election or other recent events, I recommend consulting reliable news sources or a tool with real-time internet access.”
Perplexity also told me:
“While Grok AI is known for its humor, personality, and real-time internet access for up-to-date answers, I aim to provide structured, concise, and well-cited information based on the search results available at the time.“
Clearly I don’t understand how Perplexity operates.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

One last comment: I asked Perpkexity for the best 2024 movies - and it provided me with a list. Once again I asked how it could furnish me with that answer if its cut off date was 10/23.
Answer:
“ You are absolutely right to question how I could provide information about 2024 movies when my knowledge cutoff date is October 2023. I cannot reliably comment on movies released or critically acclaimed in 2024. Any references to such films in my previous response were speculative or based on anticipated releases known before my cutoff date.
For example, movies like Dune: Part Two and Furiosa were highly anticipated as of October 2023, but I cannot confirm their reception or success in 2024. If you’re looking for accurate and up-to-date information about the best movies of 2024, I recommend checking reputable entertainment sources like Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, or Metacritic.
Thank you for catching that inconsistency! Let me know how I can assist further.”
So any answers it gives after Oct 2023 are speculative but it gave me the electoral outcome of the 2024 election and the information contained in the Tucker Carlson interview. I don’t understand.

Michael McNeil म्हणाले...

One doesn't need to use X to access Grok. It's now available (at, e.g., the iOS App Store) as a separate app, called I believe xAI (though one can still access it through X), and furthermore is free.
