How to argue that Trump is responsible for attracting assassins without catching hell for blaming the victim.

That's what the elite media commentators are working hard to figure out, I think, scanning the many headlines this morning. I tired of reading the commentary before even beginning, and I am also tired of the columns reacting to it.

So I'll choose one piece, on the chance that it might go a bit deeper. It's by Peter Baker in the NYT and the title suggests some sobriety and moderation: "Trump, Outrage and the Modern Era of Political Violence/The latest apparent assassination attempt against the former president indicates how much the American political landscape has been shaped by anger stirred by him and against him."

Excerpt:
At the heart of today’s eruption of political violence is Mr. Trump, a figure who seems to inspire people to make threats or take actions both for him and against him. He has long favored the language of violence in his political discourse, encouraging supporters to beat up hecklers, threatening to shoot looters and undocumented migrants, mocking a near-fatal attack on the husband of the Democratic House speaker and suggesting that a general he deemed disloyal be executed....

Mr. Trump’s critics have at times employed the language of violence as well, though not as extensively and repeatedly at the highest levels. The former president’s allies distributed a video compilation online of various Trump opponents saying they would like to punch him in the face or the like. Some of the more extreme voices on social media in the past day have mocked or minimized the close call at the Florida golf course. Mr. Trump’s allies often decry what they call Trump Derangement Syndrome, the notion that his critics despise him so much they have lost their minds.

Anger, of course, has long been the animating force of Mr. Trump’s time in politics — both the anger he stirs among supporters against his rivals and the anger that he generates among opponents who come to loathe him....

The problem is brainwashing, and brainwashing takes repetition over a long period, and that happened only on the left, for the last 8 years. Russia, racist, selfish, etc.

Whatever Trump says is always novel - that's how it's amusing. The opposite of brainwashing.

It's a news silo problem - the left never hears from the right. The right typically listens to everybody as part of being amused by what the left just said, which is the clickbait used by the right to get viewers.

Although recently the right has gone to outrage clickbait (istapundit, legalinsurrection, etc), which will compound the problem.

Althouse has been going evenhanded by using a stupid woman's take on everything: nothing structural matters but there are feelings on both sides.

The opening paragraph is one lie after another: “Within days of former President Donald J. How to read Trump. He has a sense of humor. Jokes have preferably at least three of the following: clever, naughty, bizarre, cruel, cute, and familiar situation. Trump mostly hits clever, cruel, and familiar, and the reason he does it is it's a joke. It's an apt characterization of a familiar situation, a Don Rickles sense of humor.

Russian agent is not an apt characterization so is pointless.

NYT: Latest apparent assassination attempt

These reprehensible assholes simply CANNOT help themselves.

There's a loaded SKS, sitting in a sniper nest, with a GoPro camera, backpack and tactical cover. Secret service report the gunman was pointing the weapon. They fired actual gunfire at the would-be assassin.

But the NYTimes will only admit this was an "apparent" attempt ... as if we're going to maybe find out later that no, it wasn't an assassination attempt after all and they want wiggle room.

And they wonder why they are so hated.

Temujin म्हणाले...

The thing about Trump is that he says so much, uses so many superlatives and hyperbole in his regular speech, that you either get to the point where you understand what's real and what's 'Trump being Trump' or you take it seriously. Some of us must have an innate ability to know what's serious and what's the entertainment or rant part of Trump's talk. The inability of our most nuanced people- the left- to recognize nuance when they see is, is almost legendary at this point.

But, Trump is up front and real. His thoughts are not thought, but spoken. As compared to, let's say a Hillary, who smiles at you while telling you that she'd just assume put you in jail for your thoughts. Or Kamala, who smiles at you while she's trying to grab onto a thought. Any thought.

Trump is hard. Kamala comes off as soft. And people like soft. It's cushy. It can bring joy. Not hard and real.

I think there’s a unity argument to be made here: People on both sides are responsible for the over-the-top existential risk rhetoric.

However, because Trump has been targeted twice, Harris has to be the one to show leadership and make a heartfelt statement that would start to alleviate people’s fears about Trump. Of course, that would undo her campaign and that of every other Democrat, so she won’t.

Baker is openly disingenuous. The Trump "examples" are all hyperlinked so the enraged NYT reader can click through and get jacked up on Trump hatred easily (and of course include jokes and comments taken out of context or like the Paul Pelosi incident a simple question, which Trump deserved to ask because he was being blamed for the attack at the time).

In contrast, starting from the dubious premise "Trump’s critics have at times employed the language of violence" [emphasis added] Baker softens the tone substantially, signaling he agrees with them (IMO). Notice they are simply "critics" while Trump is "a figure who ... has long favored the language of violence." This even though he did not advocate violence on Pelosi but condemned it. And of course the "at times" does yeoman's work in the clause, obfuscating the fact that Trump is subject to a continual onslaught of being called "a threat to the nation" and ""to our freedom" and to "our democracy" and of course the hyperbolic "threat to everything America stands for." In fact all of those were in one brief Tweet from Biden in June right after the first assassination attempt, egging on the next nutcase.

In the time it took me to write this comment, probably 100,000 leftists on Twitter have cheered on the violent attempts to end Trump's life or echoed the extreme rhetoric that I quoted above. Hell, "Democracy is on the ballot" is literally a Harris campaign slogan, one repeated by the gunman on his X account, and what is the literal meaning other than Trump is a threat.

The best part is that Trump was president for four years. So they say these vile, hateful, nut-prompting things without evidence (to coin a phrase) and in full realization that their words are inciting the exact violence they desire. Then they take to the air to say it's Trump's fault he is being shot at. I'm more disgusted by the Leftist Media than I've ever been. I expect this bullshit from politicians because they've always been vile creatures, but the DNC-Media now just echo the worst of the worst things the Swamp Creatures come up with.

Trump brilliantly realized: If he can get a large part of the left to hate him and his supporters, that will be a big advantage. For example, if he can get his most vocal critics so worked up that they will sound deranged. And if he can get his supporters to view him as a protector. So he's constantly pushing the left's buttons and saying things that he knows will set them off.

Trying to get people to hate your opponent isn't new. Trying to get people to despise their supporters is I think less common, but not new. (Obama did this but in a more subtle way; Hillary was famously clumsy and ineffective at it.) But I don't recall anyone intentionally garnering hatred like Trump does.

Whenever I hear people saying "It's Trump's fault that we hate him", I think "You really got played."

To be clear: If I enjoy setting someone off, and getting them to hate me, that does not justify their reciprocating with a murder attempt.

Trump didn't "stir the anger". The anger was there already. Trump's victory in 2016 was a symptom of that anger. Hillary expected to win - Trump was her preferred opponent. These are basic, obvious questions to ask. Our media doesn't ask them. Nor do they deign to place public protest on a comparative scale, placing Pussy Marches and Supreme Court testimony protests alongside Trump inauguration violence and Rodney King and George Floyd and January 6th, to compare the societal impact in real terms: Lives lost, Jobs lost, businesses permanently closed, insurance claims paid, dollars in damage, economic impact, all parameters that are immediately comparable and commonly understood. The "existential threat to democracy" line that Democrats keep pushing, doesn't cause assassination attempts. There are always deranged people who would take a shot to attain some notoriety.

By demonizing Trump as a threat to America, the Democrats have subtly influenced the Secret Service and other intelligence agencies. When Obama was president, they felt an almost sacred duty to keep our historic president safe from the KKK or whomever was supposed to object to his heritage. With Trump, they seem to just be going through the motions.

“She’s a Marxist. She’s a fascist,” the former president declared last week, weirdly combining labels that normally contradict each other.

Trump made similar statements in other speeches. In La Crosse, Wisconsin, he said, "She is in fact a Marxist-slash-communist." In Michigan, he said Harris "is a Marxist, just like her father" and also called her a "fascist."

Ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Trump posted a fake image showing a red-clad female leader resembling Harris addressing a red-flag waving crowd while a communist hammer and sickle flag hung overhead. Weeks later, Elon Musk, the X owner and entrepreneur who backs Trump, posted another fake image of Harris wearing red communist military garb.”

Repeating his contention that Mrs. Clinton wanted to abolish the right to bear arms, Mr. Trump warned at a rally here that it would be “a horrible day” if Mrs. Clinton were elected and got to appoint a tiebreaking Supreme Court justice.

“If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks,” Mr. Trump said, as the crowd began to boo. He quickly added: “Although the Second Amendment people — maybe there is, I don’t know.”

I didn't need Trump to make me angry at "normal" or ordinary politicians, but is it really "anger"? It feels more like disgust. I might be angry if I expected more from them, but it's clear that they don't amount to much and don't have much to offer. Propagandists like to characterize opponents as blinded by anger or hate or fear, but a dislike for politicians and government can be wholly rationally and reasonable.

Is it possible that Trump's rhetoric is cathartic, that what he says ultimately pacifies listeners? Do people going to his rallies realize that much of what he says isn't to be taken literally? Maybe the other side's fear of Trump as a tyrant and autocrat, the new Hitler and a threat to the Constitution is taken seriously and literally and builds and builds without catharsis, to the point where some viewers and readers feel compelled to act out violently.
