"Cary Grant was an idol of mine and I was in awe watching him in the movies and I wanted to copy him. I love thick suits with structure. I think masculine is feminine."

Said Diane Keaton, quoted in "How Diane Keaton redefined the movie star look/The 78-year-old actress has gathered a voluminous selection of her most celebrated, most treasured and most questionable looks in a new book, 'Fashion First'" (WaPo)(free-access link, so you can see the photos and because it's the last day of the month and I've got 2 more to use).

"Archie" is a terrific 4 part biopic of Cary Grant starring Jason Isaacs as the man himself.

It asks for my email. Not that I'm complaining, really . . . I just thought it would be interesting to see if my tastes had changed over the decades. I found her quite delectable in the 70s but haven't paid much attention since.

Let us know if that results in any negative consequences.

(I wasn’t asked for my email) In the comments to the article, it was mentioned that wearing male clothes started with Greta Garbo in Queen Christina. It wasn’t a fair comment because in QC, Garbo wears male clothes to go incognito - which I think is a plot device used in a lot of movies. But others mentioned that Garbo wore male clothes when she went to the front to visit soldiers. Maybe she also did so in her private life as well. In modern times I can’t think of anyone besides Keaton who did that. Garbo had an adrogynous quality that Keaton never had. Keaton always looked feminine regardless of what she was wearing. Her taste in clothes definitely set her apart from other actresses. It’s interesting that she considered Cary Grant as an inspiration. Grant, quite often, had a feminine quality about him.
I watched QC this afternoon. Besides Ninotchka (highly recommended) I had never seen a Garbo movie. I had seen bits and pieces of movies with Garbo and she never impressed me as a great actor. But I enjoyed QC. She was very different from anyone else so now I understand her mystique.

Diane Keaton and Cary Grant had style. Good for her.

Having failed at far too many attempts to compose an acceptable comment for posting, I now find myself suspecting that Cary Grant smelled bad.

I don't think I've seen Diane Keaton in a major movie for forty years, and she wasn't in many back in the day, but she remains memorable. That's impressive.

Any celebrity that puts the time and effort into an interesting style, gets some credit. That Diane Keaton's book has a chapter titled, "Wrong Wrong Wrong" describing her biggest sartorial mistakes, is enough to make me want to read it.

Some truly terrible outfits there.

Who believed he was more stylish: Cary Grant or Randolph Scott?
