"Adopting joy as a political shield has also allowed Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz to throw some bare-knuckled punches at Mr. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio."

"Ms. Harris, a former prosecutor, has targeted Mr. Trump for his many legal problems — 'I know Donald Trump’s type,' she now likes to say, to uproarious applause and chants of 'Lock him up' that she only recently began to discourage. Mr. Walz has castigated Mr. Trump for 'servicing himself' instead of helping others, and made an off-color reference to a debunked rumor about Mr. Vance and furniture. Both Democrats do it with a smile, and the crowd eats it up.... Of course, Ms. Harris’s joyful-warrior approach has so far not been substantive from a policy perspective...."

Writes Katie Rogers in "Harris Used to Worry About Laughing. Now Joy Is Fueling Her Campaign. Democrats are smiling again, and so is a vice president who once weighed the political risks of cheerfulness. The high spirits are also providing air cover for scathing attacks on Republicans" (NYT).

But maybe get-happy is policy enough: "In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt adopted the song 'Happy Days Are Here Again' to offer a promise of a bright future to Americans stricken by the Great Depression.... In a time of war and economic recession, Barack Obama’s likeness was plastered on a poster [with] the message... 'Hope.'"

Joy is good. C. S. Lewis wrote a whole book about it ("Surprised by Joy"). And I'm not surprised Harris and Walz are both full of glee at what they've gotten away with. They make horror movies about characters like this, the laughing, friendly-acting creature that gets next to you and then sucks away your soul.

It is possible that these two are in that first wave of outer space aliens who have infiltrated the planet and assumed human form to strip away our lives and resources and then fly away to wreak their destruction on some other unsuspecting and defenseless population elsewhere in the galaxy. They write books and make movies about that kind of thing, too. Supposedly fiction, of course, but it could be real. I think we're about to find out.

Zaman also spoke at a May 2020 event to call for peaceful protests with the governor during the riots in Minnesota sparked after George Floyd’s death. In April 2019, the cleric delivered an invocation before Walz’s state address — just months after Zaman called for an end to a government shutdown at a press conference with Walz in January 2019.

FDR and Obama said things are terrible, but I bring you hope, and they are inspiring. Trump said things are terrible, but I bring you hope, and he's "dark" and "threatening."

"Happy Warrior" goes back to FDR's description of Al Smith in a nominating speech at the 1924 DNC. It comes from Wordsworth's poem, "Character of a Happy Warrior." Roosevelt was no intellectual, but he might actually have known the poem (or at least Smith's advisor and speechwriter knew it).

Hubert Humphrey adopted the "Happy Warrior" meme, and even spoke of the "Politics of Joy." His catchphrase -- real or invented by mimics and comedians -- was "I'm pleased as punch to be here ..." With a name like Hubert Horatio Humphrey, Jr. it's hard not to be a little ridiculous. Still, Humphrey was a more substantial figure than Harris or Walz.

"Surprised by Joy" was originally another poem by Wordsworth. I suppose Wordsworth was a very joyful guy, but was he really that happy when there weren't any daffodils around to frolic in?

As for combat veterans: how about Ike, JFK, Chester Nimitz, Omar Bradley, George Patton, MaArthur, LeMay, Clark Gable, Glenn Miller, Jimmy Stewart, John McCain, David Petraeus, Gen. Flynn, Bob Dole, Daniel Inouye....

.As for Sgt Yorks in VietNam, there were 4 Medal of Honor recipients...

Face it----unlike you, William, we're not contemptuous of the average American as you are---and certainly not as ignorant. (Admit it---Calley was the only combat veteran YOU could think of!)

Only boomers remember Dylan's pivot to electric; the rest were too young or not yet born.

As for combat veterans: how about Ike, JFK, Chester Nimitz, Omar Bradley, George Patton, John McCain, David Petraeus, Curtis LeMay, Clark Cable, Charles Bronson, Jimmy Stewart, Glenn Miller, Gen. Flynn, Bob Dole, Daniel Inouye.....

Admit it: Calley is the only one YOU could think of.

As for Sgt Yorks in VietNam, there were 4 Medal of Honor recipients...

Face it----we're not nearly as ignorant as you are, and we certainly don't share your contempt for average Americans.

The effort of ridicule is to kill. Men’s laughter sometimes exerts all its power to murder. …
Humor is the folly of assemblies. Their ingenious and foolish ridicule shuns facts instead of studying them, and condemns questions instead of solving them. …
Of all the lava which that crater, the human mouth, ejects, the most corrosive is joy. To inflict evil gaily is a contagion which no crowd can resist. All executions do not take place on the scaffold; and men, from the moment they are in a body, whether in mobs or in senates, have always a ready executioner amongst them, called sarcasm. There is no torture to be compared to that of the wretch condemned to execution by ridicule.
—Victor Hugo, “The Man Who Laughs”

So Inga will work hard to tell us how wonderful Harris is for prosecuting and trying to jail David Daledin and slapping gag orders on him to prevent him from revealing the evils of planned parenthood literally butchering alive babies to sell their body parts. Mr. Daledin released the videos today that Harris was trying to jail him to prevent him from releasing. They are guaranteed to make Inga swoon! All sorts of talk from planned parenthood doctors and executive about "if the baby is coming too quick, stop it here and rip off a leg... that's how we avoid the ban on partial birth abortions!" Just what Inga and Rich and their soulless love of unlimited abortion adore!

I'll bet that Althouse doesn't touch this issue, though... the videos are really, really, really bad and anyone who supports abortion if they have any kind of soul at all will run screaming in terror. I judge Althouse as not being a supporter of literally murdering and dismembering babies for profit, so she'll probably try to hide on this issue that is going to haunt Harris.

“Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, on at least five occasions as governor of Minnesota, hosted a Muslim cleric who celebrated Hamas‘s Oct. 7 attack last year on Israel and promoted a film popular among Neo-Nazis that glorifies Adolf Hitler”

Leftist Soviets like Inga don't care about innocent live babies torn apart for the left's pocket lining. Kamala is happy because she knows she too is in line for a great deal of pocket lining.

It just keeps getting worse for Stolen Valor Walz;

"NEW: Newly uncovered video shows Tim Walz *thanking* Nancy Pelosi after she recognized his service "on the battlefield" which never happened.

C-SPAN displayed a chyron that claimed Walz was an "Afghanistan War Veteran."

Pelosi: "I want him to know how much we all appreciate his service to our country, whether it's in the classroom or on the battlefield."

Walz: "Well, thank you, Madam Speaker, and thank you to the leadership here."'
