Cruel neutrality, or the option of sitting it out and quietly watching the show - those are options that are generally available in a high-trust society. Do we live in a high-trust society? Or are we just hunkering down, and calling it 'opting out'.

But it's not 'opting out' if the doors are locked and barred and you're on edge. I've had to hunker down in other places as we figured out how to leave and get our people out safely, and families were involved. It's a terrible feeling, being scared out of your guts all the time, but we knew we had a safe-place country to return to. I would guess there are quite a few people right now, in mostly Blue places that are feeling beleaguered and hunkered down, and fixing to get pragmatic while they still have the option.
