I don’t think Barrymore intended any harm, quite the opposite, and the vice president was magnanimous, taking the comment in stride and with good cheer. The studio audience applauded.
But even gentle and oblivious stereotyping can be harmful, and it’s important that we explore why this comment, which may seem innocuous to some, is offensive to others.
I suspect that Barrymore did exactly what she was asked to do, but Kamala Harris did not take advantage of the opportunity and now Blow is trying to help by blaming Barrymore — dear, sweet Barrymore!
"The vice president was magnanimous" — see how that's an attack on Barrymore?!
Kamala took it "in stride and with good cheer." Yeah, she processed it. She squandered it.
Blow continues:
Black women and girls spend their entire lives in flight from a society insistent on de-individualizing and dehumanizing them, insistent on forcing them to fit broad generalizations.
Drew was dehumanizing Kamala? Drew was lavishly contributing her intense personal connection to Kamala, but Kamala didn't want it. Don't put Kamala on the couch next to Drew unless you want that contribution. Kamala's people were using Drew to humanize Kamala, and Kamala chose her own demeanor, which was distanced and generic.
The way that Harris and her family express love and connection is theirs, even when Harris shares it. It remains part of her private life, not her professional and political obligations. She deserves separation between the two, and we ought to respect that boundary.
That she would be called upon to comfort and nurture the country, rather than dutifully represent it, is demeaning and holds Black women captive to historical mythologies.
Captive! Drew Barrymore was essentially enslaving Kamala Harris on that couch.
Our country may indeed need moral guidance and collective counsel, but Black women are not obligated to provide it....
Blow disapproves of "de-individualizing" "black women," so why won't he individualize Kamala Harris? Harris isn't "obligated" to do anything, but she needs to offer something. What on earth is it?
Speaking of individuals, Drew is Drew:

Drew says that this cocksucking WHORE is like her own MOM.. i'm NOT going to disagree
For once, the kneepads weren't for Kamala.
Damage control for Kamala being performed by someone named "Blow"? I'm sure there's got to be a joke (well, aside from Kamala herself) in there somewhere.
That goes on the Top 10 Althouse list.
I doubt Harris is capable of that level of self-awareness, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you nailed the tone—relentlessly calculating without any real human feeling.
Harris doesn’t have stepdaughters, she has two stepsons.
"But in our country, we need you to be 'Momala' of the country."
How fucked in the head do you have to be, to be looking at the government as if it were your parent(s)?
Harris is unfamiliar, pethaps at odds, with Barrymore's far-fetched conceptions.
Music and Lyrics (2007) was good, which come to think of it was just Hugh Grant interacting with just that. She's still playing the female part in a romcom but lacks a leading man.
That may be the first tiktok I actually found very funny. Laugh out loud funny.
Is this what they burned their bras for? I hope Trump declares himself the Dadala of the country at his victory party.
I agree that Barrymore did exactly what she was asked to do.
A good question would be: Who asked her to do it? I Mean, what kind of polling are people looking at that this cringeworthy behavior is what they think will help!? (It's entirely in keeping with Barrymore's personality though).
The "Momola" comment is vomit-making.
Reminded me of the photo of the media in the Hillary Clinton campaign plane looking lovingly at the Pantsuited Pantload standing in the aisle in front of them.
Momala...LOL!
Nice analysis and spot on Ann.
I'm sure Kamala was given a bullet point summary of what Drew was going to say and how she should react but failed to prep once again.
This Drew woman is creepily intense, like she really, really, really wants to put Harris over with her all-woman audience. (I love how the audience applauds themselves and their mono-gender makeup.)
This interview is maybe the stupidest mess I've ever seen. Good god.
"immense warmth"... LMFAO! That's just the heat from Barrymore's blazing idiocy.
No comments on the YouTube clip? Lol, okay. Admittedly I thought the TikTok was hilarious, which is possibly why the regime wants to ban it.
The attempts to portray Kamala as having average intelligence for a black woman, never mind the authority to be President, demonstrate the near total incompetence of the regime. Even with 100% backing from the New York oligarchy, the regime winning normal elections is increasingly a ridiculous notion.
Drew Barrymore is "White"
We are told that Kamala is "black"
In the picture with your post the "black" Kamala seems to have whiter skin than the "white" Drew
John Henry
I love Drew Barrymore, I thought she was lovely.
The Tik Tok clip was funniest thing I've seen in a while.
mámalo = suck it
Hahahaha, this is one of your all time best posts and the TikTok at the end was the perfect cherry on top!
Kamala comes across like the leastest Mom in Momdom.
the gag reflex is strong, yes that hillary pic, is evocative, well more vomative,
Black women and girls spend their entire lives in flight from a society insistent on de-individualizing and dehumanizing them, insistent on forcing them to fit broad generalizations.
Unfortunately, much (perhaps most) of this insistence is from within the black women community.
"insufficiently warm and puzzlingly fake"
Why puzzling? When you know how you f*#$!d your way to the top, and made your reputation prosecuting black men, and are incompetent at your main job, and can't even fake sincerity, your fakey fakeness is bound to come through. She knows. Hence the word salads, the stiffness, the cackle.
But female politicians want to have it both ways--to be taken seriously like men and to play the gender card when needed.
If she got any closer, she would be sitting on her Mommy's lap. Poor little Drew has Mommy and Daddy issues.
TheDopeFromHope said...
Harris doesn’t have stepdaughters, she has two stepsons.

So you are saying her "stepdaughter" Ella identifies as a male?? Seeing pictures of her, I can understand why!!
Seems like Drew has a "need" to get into peoples personal spaces in EVERY interview...
https://pagesix.com/2023/12/12/entertainment/cringey-drew-barrymore-slammed-for-caressing-oprah-winfrey-during-interview/
Dear, sweet Drew Barrymore? She always struck me as a messed up celebrity kid. Kind of sleazy and phony.
Kamala is diversity hire, in way over her head, so that proposed internal dialogue must happen to her a lot.
Charles Blow explaining Black women and girls to us has to be some kind of code violation.
Gag me with a spoon! The one thing you can say about Kamala Harris is that she's authentically fake.
Momala sounds kind of like marmalade. Lady Marmalade. Patti Labelle. Gitchie Gitchie Ya Ya Da Da. Kamala Harris has no children of her own, presumably by choice but I don't know that for sure, it could be a medical reason or whatever. But anyway, telling her she has to play Momala to the country, that a seems a bit unthinking and possibly a bit unkind. Would her staff really have asked Drew Barrymore to introduce motherhood into the conversation??
1. “Harris doesn’t have stepdaughters, she has two stepsons”
Kamala’s husband has two children from his previous relationship with his ex-wife Kerstin Emhoff: daughter Ella and son Cole.
2. Harris came off really well in this interview - and also in the parody. A+
3. Drew was embarrassingly awful. But if her goal was to make Harris look good, she certainly accomplished that. So A+ for her too.
"Harris doesn’t have stepdaughters, she has two stepsons."
I looked it up. One is male and the other is female.
Corrected in the original post.
Blow's comment about black women being de-individualized is a curious example of him doing what he says others do. He's generalizing Kamala's life experience. She's getting roped into the wider Black experience even though her life shows many, many differences from almost every other African American experience.
Looking up the gender of the stepdaughters I found this in Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_of_Kamala_Harris:
"Kamala Harris is of Indian and Irish Jamaican descent on her paternal side and of Indian descent on her maternal side. According to the Los Angeles Times, "Gopalan (Kamala's mother) was a Tamil Brahmin, part of a "privileged elite" in Hinduism's ancient caste hierarchy." Donald J. Harris wrote in an account of his family ancestry that the Harris name comes from his paternal grandfather Joseph Alexander Harris, a land owner and agricultural produce exporter, and that his paternal grandmother "Miss Chrishy" (née Christiana Brown) was a descendant of Hamilton Brown, a plantation and slave owner."
Why is Blow making all these statements about stereotypes of black women, when it's a big stretch to put KH in that category at all? To ask is to see the most likely answer: She wants to be in that category and Blow wants to help.
Remember when Drew was called racist for frolicking in the rain?
https://www.tiktok.com/discover/drew-barrymore-racist-for-frolicking-in-rain
Just like the elder George Bush was supposedly every woman's first husband, Kamala Harris can be the nation's stepmother.
"Kamala's response is to nod and smile and murmur a 'yeah' that sounds rather dubious."
If I were Kamala and someone pulled this freaky nonsense on me, I would try to be "magnanimous, taking the comment in stride", too. But I would not be cheerful, though.
"That she would be called upon to comfort and nurture the country, rather than dutifully represent it, is demeaning and holds Black women captive to historical mythologies."
I agree with Blow in this one. The "Magical Negro" - or the "Mammy" stereotype in this case - is nonsense.
Robert Cook: "The "Momola" comment is vomit-making."
Unreconstructed stalinist finds Barrymore's cultish behavior towards a politician off-putting.
Discuss.
I'm sure Kamala was given a bullet point summary of what Drew was going to say and how she should react but failed to prep once again.
5/2/24, 10:37 AM
It's more likely (to me) that Drew was given a script and Kamala was expected to react to praise like a normal human.
Hmmm. I think your thoughts are too coherent for Kamala.
It's Blow, but still, how is calling a person a "Mama" dehumanizing? Is it because Blow thinks all animals have Mom's, and therefore it is a human only trait? But isn't calling someone "Mama" or "Momala" only a human capability? Is it the Critical Theory that improperly pronouncing someone's name is systemic racism, so "Momala" was out-of-line?
I especially like the idea of subjecting the writings of Charles Blow to critical analysis. That's a hoot. With Maureen Dowd, you can sometimes see the machinery of a viable analytic paradigm, struggling to get out from under the requisite political spin. Dowd probably got very good grades on her undergraduate essays. She knows how to select a theme, compare and contrast, and sometimes has a surprising insight. But Chucky Blow never had to learn that kind of thing. He could always get by with shuck and jive. "Black folks (Ahem. Like me!) got's it so hard! It's just hard I tell you! We's being oppressed while we's being depressed while we's being impressed by what is being expressed. Or something! That's it! Something!".
Can I have my "A" now?
Mason G: "How fucked in the head do you have to be, to be looking at the government as if it were your parent(s)?"
As evidenced by every single leftist/dem/LLR-democratical posting at Althouse, pretty F-d.
I watched that video a few days ago when it first came out and was just nauseated. The fact that Charles Blow is now blaming Drew for anything is hilarious. Harris can’t even get things right when they’re orchestrated for her. She just sucks. Politically and literally.
When I watched it the first time (as the nausea subsided) I thought to myself: “self, you just watched Drew Barrymore fellating Kamala Harris. I would have never expected, between the two of them, that it would be Drew doing the cocksucking. Surely would have bet on Harris. Good thing I’m not a gambler.
"Remember when Drew was called racist for frolicking in the rain?".
Sorta. But it's wipipo's fault. If they didn't wanna be called "racist", they shouldn't have imported all those black people. Boy, was that a mistake!
Oh my God this is such a huge public relations failure. The only way that Kamala Harris will be able to walk this back is if she takes a puppy dog down into a quarry and blows it away with a shotgun before taking out a goat by slitting its throat with a jambiya.
Given Kamala's razor-sharp intellect and world-class ability to make word salad, I suspect she is thinking:
Mmmmmmmmm...gooooo....hee hee... Ooogah ooogah. Woo Wizz. Murble. Spaghetti. Money. Murble. Goo goo. Hot. Sleepy. Itchy. I don't cackle like a witch. hee hee. Who is this white woman? Gooooooo. Gooooooo. Murble... Mmmmmmmm...
That's as cringy as it gets without being overtly sexual. Drew wants a nanny state.
Drew took something wacky before that interview. She reminds me of Heather Graham's Rollergirl.
Will You Be My Mon?
Don't you people know that we all view black women only as mammys, slaves, or whores, and Barrymore was using the mammy sterotype?
For shame!!!!
Even though, in some cosmic irony, Harris is descended directly from two slaveholding families (The extreme exploitation of Untouchables by Brahmin caste Indians continues in America's suburbs today and is normal in India, with the latter being "body servants" and worse, entitled to beating by "owners," and definitely viewed as subhuman in society). Her father's family, despite several efforts to dispel the connection, was a virulent defender of slavery and holder of both African slaves and Irish indentured servants, who often lived in worse conditions than slaves. Also ironically, Barrymore is predominantly Irish and also Eastern European and Indian. Her mother was born in an internment camp in West Germany -- essentially a prison camp in a nation imprisoned by Stalin.
But, Mammy!!!!!
Meanwhile, Barrymore was forced to start working by her screwed-up family when she was six.
But, Mammy!!!!
You can't blame them. Women eat this stuff up...
What — if anything — is she thinking?
That they're taking the Magic Negro stuff too seriously?
If Kamala was the "Momala" that would be an upgrade of her responsibilities. Kamala is more irrelevant that the large majority of Vice Presidents, which is saying something when she is technically #2 to an elderly, corrupt, incredibly unpopular idiot suffering from dementia. Anyone with minimal political chops would have been able to seize power behind the scenes. Whenever the administration wants to non-solve something they assign it to Kamala. She has done nothing in all situations, which is what was wanted, but she could very well have actually done something - it was public so trying to stop her would have made them look terrible - and made herself into a major figure. It is not like they can fire her. But what were we expecting from a DEI hire who only has a political career because she became the mistress of a powerful man.
The fact that Drew wants Kamala as a surrogate government mom reflects more on how Hollywood ruins people than anything.
That one stepdaughter is a dude! Don't misgender, don't mis-something, it's the worst thing you can do today!
I just now watched the TikTok- those two ladies knocked it out of the park!
This could solve the Dem dilemma where they are stuck with Harris. She can run for Momala and someone else can run for VP.
"How is calling a person "Mama" dehumanizing?"
It means breasts.
I just watched. Drew's affect is so very annoying.
"...But even gentle and oblivious stereotyping can be harmful, and it’s important that we explore why this comment..."
Why is it important?
And given @rhhardin's comment on the definition of 'mámalo', I wonder if we should consider the possibility that Drew hates Kamala's guts? What kind of act would she put on, if that were the case? Makes ya wondah.
I don't think this country needs a national Mom. If we did, a woman who's never had children is not a good candidate.
Kamala Harris needs to persuade people that she's not just a good-looking woman who checked two racial boxes. She needs to project competence and intelligence. If she could do warm and fuzzy, that wouldn't be enough. (I do believe, however, that she's not senile. So she has that.)
When I saw this the other day I half expected Drew to try to eat the Veep. And I mean 'eat' in the most sexual way.
Tina, West Germany was not a nation imprisoned by Stalin.
That would be the former "Untouchables" who still occupy a slave-like status to Kamala Harris' Brahmin caste. I also left out some more technical terms I learned in academia -- really, all that was taught at that time: the "tragic mulatto," the "Jezebel" and the "welfare queen" joined "mammy" as stereotypes of black women. Feeling bad about this was practically a degree major.
Incidentally, racially preen-accusing PBS documentarian Ken Burns is, like Kamala Harris, descended from slave owners and owners of indentured Irish laborers. When confronted about the latter, he said his family treated those people real good.
He was reportedly distraught about the black slaves, though. And as a child, he proudly reported, he would force his brother to "play Civil War" and he always got to represent the Union.
I'd actually respect Harris if she explored the history of black slaveowners and owners of Irish indentured laborers in her own family. That would show leadership.
I don't wish Harris well, and I doubt Barrymore meant ill, but it just goes to show you that if you scratch a leftist, you find a hysterical race fetishist. That was way beyond the pale, but it's not systemic, and it ain't my problem.
Ughh... just shoot me. Drew Barrymore is the biggest ass-kisser on TV. She makes me want to hurl.
Drew Barrymore wasn't hot enough to be a Charlie's Angel.
"Kamala's response is to nod and smile and murmur a "yeah" that sounds rather dubious.
What — if anything — is she thinking?
Not much, probably. Like Brandon, she needs pre-programmed talking points. She can't think on her feet. Maybe if she got down on her knees...
Try that shit on Tulsi Gabbard.
How fucked in the head do you have to be, to be looking at the government as if it were your parent(s)?
There's an insight in that. I've never understood the royalist impulse that clearly runs through human history. Is it a function of most people's desire for family? Does the royalist impulse come from something missing or inadequate in the lives of those who feel it? Worth thinking about.
Kamala is >this close< to being our C-in-C and this is what they set up to show that she’s up for that?
Imagine Thatcher, Merkel, or Meir being involved in some ploy like this - t’would never happen in a million years….
The number one reason to vote against Biden is Kamala.
I've never seen Drew Barrymore's show before. Is she always like that with guests or is she doing satire with this politician? That's what I would do if I was given an assignment to make a politician look good. That's what any mean girl would do.
On the plus side, Drew never actually referred to her as my deal old Mamie, but that's the subtext that Kamala and the world feels uncomfortable with.....Drew Barrymore has a great deal of hug appeal, but Kamala nearly none. It's not the context; it's the juxtaposition. Nobody in their right mind wants to be hugged by Kamala. I know her many supporters here are going to praise the dexterity of her oral skills but that's not the same as a life affirming hug.
Blow generalizes about “black women and girls taking flight” from the attempt to “de-individualize them.”
He’s even dumber than Kamala.
We all need a mom. That means we don’t need a step mom.
Two stupid people sitting on a sofa, K-I-S-S-I-N-G.
Sad that network thinks women want to watch this warm gruel. Drew is famously a poor judge of character, certainly can't lead by example. Kamala is famously a bimbo who used her sexual availability to further her career. Wrong message conveyed by both these women, hardly to advantage of American women and girls.
Digital filtering does wonders for Momala's complexion.
Althouse writes, "Kamala's people were using Drew to humanize Kamala."
Perhaps another "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" remake is in the offing. See Invasion of the Human Kamala!
Kamala is of mixed ancestry, and went to high school in Montreal. Does she always have this funny feeling that she may not fit in--she's not sure how to act, she's puzzled at the times other people are emotional or unemotional? Is she on the spectrum?
Old-fashioned affirmative action, now regarded as a racist search for "hidden gems," has been escalated into DEI hires. Surely many of us are wondering: is this the best they can do?
Drew Barrymore
Charles Blow

The TicToc vid led me to scroll up and watch Drew and Kamala.
Kamala really does not seem as articulate as the average politician.

If Blow wants to talk about dehumanization, he should discuss the dehumanization inherent in characterizing everyone with one black great-grandparent as black. The one drop rule is a remnant of the slave south.
I respect the right of Kamala to choose to call herself whatever she wants, but the rest of us have the right to notice that Kamala has made a strategic choice, one not forced upon her. She's not Rachel Dolezal, but she's Rachel Dolezal adjacent.
I recall a Hawaiian law student once named Barry Sotero who made a strategic decision to call himself a Kenyan. Good for him, but don't come complaining when people notice the game being played. Phoniness is the rule in racial politics, not the exception.
Ma-Ma? Family Feud
E.T., Ever After, Santa Clarita Diet. All I got for this Barrymore. Her forebears were much better. But, she’s trying to make a dime so can’t fault her. A girl’s gotta eat.

Yeesh, I've got to hold hands with Drew now, and my face needs to show that I'm deeply touched by wonderful sweet Drew — Drew, loved by all! — and they don't love me — me, the step-mother, the evil step-mother — and she's hamming it up, talking about lifting people up — ah! That's my opportunity to wrest my hands out of her bony grip and do my clappy-clappy thing and now I can talk about lifting people up but it's that ridiculous babble that comes out when I try to take advantage of these God-awful situations they put me in to try to warm me up for public consumption and oh, jeez, I sound so insincere, I said "sincerely" twice, but I must go on....
OMG, LOL :-)
Very well played, Professor

I think that you're giving Kamala too much credit for being able to think like a rational adult. She usually sounds to me like someone who is constantly high on pot. She's a total stoner.

The one with the unibrow is female.
I feel bad about a woman in her late 40's who thinks that American voter needs a mother figure -particularly one who clearly spends a lot of time pursuing a youthful look.
If I was a woman, that display would have made me embarrassed to be one.
“Drew Barrymore wasn't hot enough to be a Charlie's Angel.”
Barrymore was apparently one of the producers of the original movie. I very much expect that it was a vanity project on her part, and she was significantly involved in putting it together. She’s a Barrymore, which means the bluest of blue blooded Hollywood royalty*. She has always been best in somewhat comedic roles, which is probably why the dramatic side of the TV series were replaced by comedic ones in the movie. I have enjoyed some of her RomCom roles, as I have with Cameron Diaz, another the Angels in those two movies. I should note that her apparent love interest at the time, and soon 2nd husband, Tom Green, was cast as her kinda love interest in the movie, Chad, the fisherman.
* Wikipedia: Drew Barrymore
Drew Blythe Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975, in Culver City, California, to actor John Drew Barrymore and aspiring actress Jaid Barrymore (born Ildikó Jaid Makó),[12] who was born in a displaced persons camp in Brannenburg, West Germany, to Hungarian World War II refugees.[13][14] Through her father, Barrymore has three older half-siblings, including actor John Blyth Barrymore.[15] Her parents divorced in 1984.[1]
…
Barrymore was born into an acting family. All of her paternal great-grandparents, Maurice and Georgie Drew Barrymore, Maurice and Mae Costello (née Altschuk), and her paternal grandparents, John Barrymore and Dolores Costello, were actors,[17] with John being arguably the most acclaimed actor of his generation.[1][18] Barrymore is a niece of Diana Barrymore, a grandniece of Lionel Barrymore, Ethel Barrymore and Helene Costello,[19] and a great-great-granddaughter of Irish-born John and English-born Louisa Lane Drew, all of whom were also actors. She is a great grandniece of Broadway idol John Drew Jr. and silent film actor, writer and director Sidney Drew.[20]
…
Barrymore's first name, Drew, was the maiden name of her paternal great-grandmother Georgie Drew, and her middle name, Blythe, was derived from the birth surname (Blyth) of her great-grandfather who later took the stage name of Maurice Barrymore.[23] In her 1991 autobiography Little Girl Lost, Barrymore recounted early memories of her abusive father, who left the family when she was six months old. She and her father never had a significant relationship and seldom spoke.[27]
"Kamala Harris needs to persuade people that she's not just a good-looking woman who checked two racial boxes. She needs to project competence and intelligence."
To do that she'd have some semblance of self awareness.
TIL what a jambiya is! Thanks, Althouse Blog Comment Section!
As for the post's topic, Kamala need only avoid death before the election, and need not worry about her own acharismatic appeal to most voters other than Willy Brown.
The election hinges only on selective harvesting of universal mail in ballots and any selective ballot counting which can be achieved by organized Party operations. I predict Joe and Momala in a near-landslide, not determined until two days after Election Day.
