"The backlash against the left was a key part of the 1968 presidential race. Richard Nixon famously ran a campaign on 'law and order'..."

"One commercial featured scenes of protest, as Nixon argued that 'in a system of government that provides for peaceful change, there is no cause that justifies a resort to violence.' Alabama Gov. George Wallace was a lot more direct that year in his third-party bid. While racism was at the heart of his message, he also denounced student protesters as 'silver spoon brats' who advocated 'treason' and said of protesters, 'Some of ’em lie down in front of my automobile, it’ll be the last thing they’ll ever wanna lie down in front of.' The scenes of violence in Chicago outside the Democrats’ 1968 presidential convention, meanwhile, further contributed to the notion that left-wing lawlessness had gotten out of control. It was a nightmare event for Hubert Humphrey’s beleaguered presidential campaign, one where the public overwhelmingly sided with the Chicago police, not the demonstrators. (And, of course, guess where Democrats are holding their 2024 convention: Chicago.)... [I]n November of 1968, Nixon and Wallace combined for 57 percent of the vote...."

Actually "Racism" was NOT at the heart of george wallace's campaign. That's just what his enemies, like Greenfield said at the time. And to compare a few college students acting up over Genocide in Palestine, to the violence at the Democrat Convention or the obnoxious out of control behavior of the SDS and the Yippies is absurd.

Greenfield, of course, has no understanding of why "Middle America" was so upset at the protesters in 68. Average Americans who were Veterans were upset at the waving VC and NV flags and support for Communists. They burned American flags, and were seens as spitting in the face of Americans who had loved ones fighting and dying in Vietnam. Many of the protesters were anti-American and Unpatriotic.

Today, we have people protesting the Genocide by a foreign country. Vast numbers of Americans either side with oppressed brown skined Gazans or feel we have no dog in this fight. So there will no backlash from the AMerican People. Any backlash will come from a small number of powerful Zionists.

I have been told so often I almost believe that Nixon’s law and order campaign was not about law and order; rather it was a dog whistle for racism.

The crime was real. It was not racist to talk about it. The victims were primarily black-on-black, though black-on-white was rising rapidly too. So Greenfield denies the experience of countless black crime victims too. Jeff Greenfield joins the club of sleazy historical denialists, though I'm sure he's been a member for some time.

BLM worked in 2020 because of the pretense that Trump as President had something to do with the claimed systemic racism, although the issues seemed to be in deep blue cities.

Now Trump is being tried by the same DA's being soft on crime and now protesters. It has been months since Rep. Stefanik warned campus leaders. This won't stop hacks like gadfly from making BS claims, but only "educated elites" seem dumb enough to buy-in to the BS. Working class people know the real score.

I hated campus demonstrators back then and I hate em now. I was so looking forward to college, I would have skipped high school altogether, when the free speech demos started at Berkeley.

I actually felt campuses were sacred. Lmao.

Today's hatred of Trump and the "get Trump" movement is very similar to what happened to Nixon. Nixon was vilified just like Trump. But at least the Left didn't try to jail Nixon.

And recall what the Watergate burglars did to what the Deep State did to Trump with the Russia hoax, FiSA abuse and the entire effort. What Nixon's people did was nothing compared to what Hillary's people did. And no Dem has ever been convicted of anything.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who's very anti-Israel, is not likely to unloose the police against the protesters in the manner that Mayor Richard Daley did in 1968. This should make for an interesting comparison, assuming that the Hamas supporters are given relatively free reign and create mass chaos in the streets.

The Democratic Party seems determined to party like it's 1968. Hopefully 2024 won't involve RFK being shot by a Palestinian terrorist, but I certainly wouldn't rule it out. a) there will be MASSIVE mostly peaceful protests; with HUNDREDS dead..
b) the Powers That Be will regretfully impose PERMANENT MARTIAL LAW on the Entire country
c) any and all vocal republicans will be arrested and or executed

and then, finally
d) the Nation rallies around Moochelle; who receives a vote "count" in the HUNDREDS of MILLIONS
e) good little conformists, like Professor Althouse will be "surprised" when the police come for THEM TOO

It's fine for Jeff Greenfield to point out to fellow dems the political downside of these so-called protests, but the risk that they'll be a real turn-off for moderates in November seems kind of obvious. A better topic for Jeff to address would be why the people behind the protests decided to launch them at all -- what's the purpose? It can't be to try to improve conditions for the people of Gaza. Anybody who truly cared about them surely would come up with a better, more direct approach than to orchestrate protests at American colleges in support of Hamas.

What this looks like to me is a not-so-subtle reminder to the dem establishment that the dark forces of the international left are in charge and they better not ever forget it. It's saying, "We can do this anywhere, any time, over any issue." So, yes, this will hurt Biden's reelection chances, but that's kind of the point, i.e., that the rich anarchists behind all of this have that power at their disposal.

Well, if the wayback machine is set today to ol’ Tricky Dick in ‘68, let’s tune in to Detective Sergeant Friday on “Dragnet” giving a tongue-lashing to some protesters (who are wearing the hippest duds imaginable). This aired in March of ‘68, two months after the bloody battle for Hue City in Viet Nam and near the start of Nixon’s “law ‘n order” table-pounding. Sergeant Friday’s speech is a harbinger of the coalescing Zeitgeist to rein in the left and get out of Viet Nam -- and which put Nixon in the White House.

It will be strange if the Dems more or less give Trump the presidency. Of course, it doesn't follow that either the House or Senate will follow Trump; they didn't follow Nixon. They may impeach Trump and remove him from office.

1. Biden is sticking to open borders, with a half-hearted lie that he really wanted to do something, but the Republicans wouldn't pass a bill. He has opened the border by executive action, and he can close it, or greatly reduce the intake, by executive action. He has made it clear he has no intention of doing so, and his action or inaction is very unpopular. Maybe he (or whoever is both sane and in charge) thinks he is building a lasting coalition for the Dem party; maybe he believes Western civilization should be drastically changed, if not destroyed.

2. Israel is more of a problem for the Dems than the Republicans. Biden could lose Michigan, for example, with its large Muslim population, even if they simply abstain rather than go to Trump. Biden could be losing a lot of students and recent college graduates by way of the recent protests, backlash, etc.

3. Abortion may favor the Dems in both Florida and Arizona, and it obviously has some effect nation-wide. Given Trump's statesmanlike or Stephen Douglas view that now is not the time for moral absolutes, how much does the abortion issue hurt him? Is there any other single issue that really favors Biden? How many people both give a shit about Ukraine, and think there is something positive about what Biden has done?

4. Neo-cons always think it's 1938, and they want Chamberlain to suffer more this time. Maybe it's 1914, and people are trying to get us to wage a world war over Serbia. Not a very good idea. WW I did a lot to get the U.S. out of isolationism (which somehow included taking the Philippines), but this was both good and bad.

5. I still think Biden might impose a draft on a fairly selective group before the election. Perhaps a group that is still young, and recently performed military service so they have some training. Rather than send draftees straight to the war zone as in MASH, the idea might be to send active-duty volunteers, who have signed their asses away, and then backfill them with draftees. Patriotism and unity, perhaps the Bush Jr. phrase "homeland security," very few body bags (one hopes), talk about getting the enemy to the negotiating table a la Vietnam. There's already some talk of the body count.

There's a lot to be said for Bobby K.

1: How far will the MSM and all non-Twitter "social media" go to suppress all public mention of unrest in Chicago during the DNC

So, how do the dems triangulate this summer? They've got the far left about to go on a rampage, one sect protesting against Jews/Israel who also hate Joe Biden and the other sect trying to terrorize the voting populace against Trump.

I think it opens up a major schism in the left. Throw RFKJr. in the mix and a not-insignificant cohort of dems who just don't understand what is going on with their party will peel off and vote for him; self-affirming, pointless gestures being de riguer for them folks. Voila, another split. Who is the Biden base now, I mean other than the dead, the American-hating, and the kneejerks?

It just looks like the dems have a lot of holes in their boat. They need to patch up the college-kids, get blacks and latinxyzs back on course, tighten down the cargo by mollifying the anti-war element while underwriting two unpopular wars, convince a majority of the populace that inflation is a good thing... and stagflation is even more gooder, and find a way to convince the passengers that the captain is competent.

The D's want to make the US like California... a one-party state where you get to vote for the Democrat of your choice.

Add in that the D's control the counting in Atlanta, Philly, Detroit, Phoenix, and Milwaukee. It's impossible for any R to win while losing GA, PA, MI, AZ, and WI.

But Jordan has killed more Palestinians than Israel by an order of magnitude for a reason. Everyone kills Palestinians. Egypt built an epic wall to keep them out. The Palestinians are the problem in the area and every country and tribe agrees on that except the Iranian Regime who use them as catspaws.

The solution to the Palestinian problem is the same as the one being currently carried out in Niger or Somalia or several other countries around the world. They are incompatible with everyone in the area and need to be dissolved as a tribe. The men defeated and forced to surrender and the women and children absorbed into local communities where they are raised to be decent people that adhere to the rules of the local social contract.

The Palestinians have made it clear it is either the they are defeated or destruction of Israel and the Jewish people.

My theory is this: None of this is really planned at a central location, esp now, with the FJB WH being essentially rudderless. There are supposedly two big power factions in the FJB WH: Clintonistas and Obamaites. The coddling of Iran and Islamophilia are the Obamaites. Much of the anti-Israel/antisemitic violence is apparently being funded by billionaires, notably including George Soros. (Many of the Hamas protesters are apparently professionals, paid to show up at protests, and bussed or flown around the country to do that - we saw them at the AntiFA/BLM riots and as instigators at the J6 “insurrection”). They don’t limit themselves to this, of course - they fund a lot of anti-American initiates too. It’s hard for the Dems to distance themselves from them, because they were instrumental in winning the 2020 election. They provided huge amounts of dark money, and much of that went into facilitating election fraud. Expect that this time around too. As to this topic, there is a lot of Arab petro-money involved too. For the most part, these radical billionaires don’t take orders from the FJB WH and DNC, but rather just suggestions.

Jews have long been relatively safe in the Dem party, despite notably antisemitic other factions there too - notably Blacks and the KKK. the y are rich, smart, talented, and, until now, strongly dedicated to the Dem party. As a result, they have had an outsized representation in Dem party politics. They have consistently contributed roughly 10% of both houses of Congress, including, now, the Senate Majority Leader. They are no longer safe there. I expect that it is partially that there are now, in recent years, about as many Muslims in this country, as well as all that dark billionaire and Arab petroleum-money flowing in. We can probably see that with the colleges and universities right now, with a lot of foreign Muslims attending these schools paying full fare, and big Jewish donors waking up and realizing that the schools they have been giving Billions to have become radically antisemitic.

I think that Dem party leaders would probably like a peaceful convention this year. I don’t think that they are going to get it. The apparent goal of these dark money billionaires is to destroy this country from the inside. Burning Chicago this year would probably help their cause more than hurt it. So, I expect the Chicago and IL officials to half heartedly try to control the violence, while Garland’s DOJ sits on the side, spending their time and energy prosecuting J6 protesters, as well any jurisdiction trying to enforce voting laws, and forcing states to allow illegals to enroll and vote.

Even Paul Harvey publicly encouraged Nixon to end the Vietnam War.

The convention doesn't matter, just like Joe's senescence doesn't matter and any issue you name doesn't matter. The only thing that matters in this election is selective harvesting of universal mail in ballots by each party, and maybe some vote counting done late at night in locked rooms. Other than that, nothing matters this election.

I'm ignoring the whole mess until a week after election day. Saves a lot of time and effort.

The people screeching about Anti-semitism are generally terrible. Pretending the Israeli's are the "good" guys is wrong.
...
The Palestinians have made it clear it is either the they are defeated or destruction of Israel and the Jewish people.

There is no right or wrong. It just is.

That's some seriously fucked up babbling.

On one side we have genocidal monsters. On the other we have the people who protect themselves from teh genocidal monsters, but don't respond with genocide themselves.

But saying the ones refusing to commit genocide "are the "good" guys is wrong"?
"There is no right or wrong"? Because stopping genocide of Jews isn't "right",and wanting to genocide all the Jews isn't "wrong"?

You are seriously fucked up

ROCEAN II reveals his vicious anti-Semitism once again, when he writes:

"Today, we have people protesting the Genocide by a foreign country."
Get back to us when Israel starts building gas chambers.
