Why is Trump doing so well in the polls?

I'm reading "As Trial Begins, Was Trump Benefiting From Being Out of the News? His liabilities weren’t dominating the conversation the way they once did, perhaps helping his polling" by Nate Cohn.
Donald J. Trump appears to be a stronger candidate than he was four years ago, polling suggests, and not just because a notable number of voters look back on his presidency as a time of relative peace and prosperity. It’s also because his political liabilities, like his penchant to offend and his legal woes, don’t dominate the news the way they once did....

Really? I think he seems to dominate the news. But of course, he isn't President. The actual President does necessarily claim some space. In Biden's case, it's the least space I've ever seen claimed by a President. Because of all the prosecutions, Trump's first presidency is still immensely important daily news. And Trump also gets attention as the leading contender to be the next President. Biden is overwhelmed. What do we hear of Biden? He said something weird about cannibalism. He didn't wear a bow tie with his dinner jacket.

Nevertheless, Cohn seems to have convinced himself that Trump is lower profile in the news these days:

[O]nly 27 percent of registered voters in the last Times/Siena poll said they were paying “a lot of attention” to the news about the legal cases against him.

Yes, that's because there's too much news. Who can follow it all? Who can parse through the legal details when it's so tempting to assume he's guilty of whatever it is these hard-working professionals came up with or, alternatively, the victim of corrupt power-abusers.

It seems plausible that the lack of attention paid to Mr. Trump contributed to his early strength in the polling.....

Still, it remains plausible to think Mr. Biden’s standing might improve if the news were Trump, Trump, Trump all the time. And against that backdrop, the trial of Mr. Trump in Manhattan is all the more interesting....
A trial might just be the kind of media spectacle that manages to put Mr. Trump, not Mr. Biden, front and center.

Perhaps it’s the kind of event that leads those double haters to remember why they disliked Mr. Trump more than Mr. Biden four years ago....

Clearly, Cohn is rooting for Biden, and in that light, I'll just say, I wouldn't count on this theory working. I'd say voters have already processed their feelings about Trump, and perhaps we're settling into the relevant substantive question: Who will do a better job for us as President?

On the subject of irrelevant things, however, Cohn did draw attention to this:

Yes, It is clear the left just starts with the narrative they are pushing. Make up what ever is needed to rationalize why Obama's agenda is a disaster for the working class. Throwing in gratuitous swipes at President Trump, without actually identifying anything Trump has actually done.

Because he was the most competent executive elected in the last century. He received 10 million more votes than any other presidential candidate in history.

Some random thoughts . . .

Just in case you want a credible cannibal story, not one related by a senile old man, check out Savage Harvest, detailing Michael Rockefeller's disappearance in Papua New Guinea in 1961 (son of Nelson R., then NY Gov.) Michael was then just 23, fresh out of Harvard (where else?), and searching for primitive art for his father's new Museum of Primitive Art. His small boat turned over just offshore from a river; he swam in to find help, while his companion stayed on the capsized hull and was promptly rescued. Author builds a credible case that Michael became dinner that day for some head-hunters.

The connection to primitive art makes me think of the scene from Animal House, where Brunella is asked her major while chatting at the Dexter Lake Club, where the college kids are the ONLY white folx there: she shouts "primitive cultures" over loud background music, Shama-Lama-Ding-Dong, "Ooh mou mou". One of the many oldies you couldn't film today!

Of course not. He doesn't know or care whether it's true. His editor assigned him an angle and he did his job. Like the debater who is supposed to be able to argue for any side of any issue, the good journalist is expected to be able to support whatever narrative is assigned.

I agree that Trump dominates the News.
This is because Democratic Propagandists that prevail in almost all newsrooms are always looking for negative news re: Trump. Because Biden is the latest in the line of horrible neo-liberal governance these past 30 years. Trump has no coherent vision for America's future, but has the instinct to destroy the rotten finance, military, academic and media structures holding up a tottering empire.

Well after a while the populace falls into lawfare fatigue. Now it's just a sort of background buzziness, and it now tends to come with an overlaying smell of the dirt in a cattle feedlot. You get a bit of occasional outrage--the judge in the "hush money" trial--which isn't really about hush money, but about accounting treatment thereof, won't let Trump take a day off to attend his son's high school graduation.

But otherwise the Democrats "saturation lawfare campaign" has passed peak interest--and now those deplorable dogs don't like the Democrat lawfare dogfood. They won't pay attention anymore.

As for Trump's "business failures", I'm reminded of a story about a German venture capitalist who came to Silicon Valley early on. The Valley was littered with startup failures--and also some immensely successful startups. The German said that people who'd gone bankrupt in the Valley carried the bankruptcies like dueling scars on the cheeks of German University students--the scar was something to be proud of for a moment--and then on to the next startup. It was not a badge of shame.

And it's not only Silicon Valley. There are and were all kinds of people in the "Oil bidness" in Texas, Oklahoma, and now in North Dakota who made--and lost- fortunes several times. And, after losing a fortune, went on to make another.

mikee म्हणाले...

I note in passing that Biden achieved the office of president by not campaigning in public almost completely in 2020. All it took to get Biden elected was hatred of Trump and some skillful lawfare to get universal mailed ballots countable in a few states. Lying low is now a precedent with successful application at the presidential level in elections. Trump isn't trying to convince his opponents to vote for him, he is just trying to avoid having the opposition hate him so much they'll bother voting for the turnip their own party is running. And I note the turnip is going out in public more than in 2020, with disastrous coverage every time he tries to speak and shows his increasing dementia. Perhaps we will see a presidential election where a simple website with bullet points on policy will be the entire campaign for both sides. I'd pay a dollar to see that.

Trump got 75 million votes which makes him the most popular politician in history.

Very simple. Trump has almost zero Elect Republicans out promoting President Trump.
