kitsch home decor. In 2021, it seemed that liberals had indeed learned their lesson—not only was there a well-organized effort to hound the elderly Stephen Breyer out of office, but the effort was quite rude. (I’m not sure screaming '
Retire, bitch' at Stephen Breyer was strictly necessary, but I wasn’t bothered by it either—he was a big boy, and he could take it.) But I guess maybe the lesson was learned only for instances where the justice in question is a white man."

"Sonia Sotomayor Should Retire Now/If she leaves the Court this year, President Joe Biden will nominate a young and reliably liberal judge to replace her" (The Atlantic).

I'm not quoting this because I agree with it. I shouldn't have to say that, but I just watched Don Lemon charge Elon Musk with responsibility for words Musk had simply quoted. When I quote something, I might mean let's talk about this or this is crazy or this is articulated colorfully.

I admire the sentiment, but you're spitting in the wind. Some people here will still demean your curiosity, as they do every day.

In this situation the correct response is to reject Don Lemon. If you’re allowing Don Lemon to influence your behavior it is time to rethink your life…
Guaranteed there’s a DC law firm searching for the most totalitarian babies right now…
If Jackson is the model, god help us.
People love spending other people's money, telling them what to say and do and dictating when it's time to retire. A wise Latina once said: Chupame la verga, pinche cabron
I’m looking forward to the “Wise-up Sonia” writeup.
The failing wasn't mainly a cult of personality -- it was that the Democrats initiated court lawfare no later than the 1960s for the civil rights movement, which became obvious in 1973-1974 with Roe v. Wade and overturning the death penalty.
Those rulings precipitated (1) right-wing defensive lawfare per developing law schools to train future SC judges, and (2) the open politicization of the Supreme Court with the rejection of Robert Bork on ideological grounds and weird attacks on Clarence Thomas.
RBG was a Dem justice appointed after the Thomas episode...so her sycophants had descended into superficiality before she arrived. As always, pride goes before destruction. Those on the left who feel they've 'overcome' something are routine victims of their own pride.

All the "best people" keep telling me that SCOTUS is NOT political! I am shocked SHOCKED to learn that some justices might not actually come to a neutral, textual interpolation of the cases and laws that they review!
It’s such an awful perspective- our policies are so unpopular but rather than alter our positions to gain support we’ll just plant our people on the court and have them backstop everything we want to do. It’s clear that was the plan. The stuff being shot down now was supposed be getting rubber stamped today. Damn you voters!!!
of course.. There are TWO Problems with this plan
Sens Sineama and Manchin. Any pick This session has to get past them.
Do the democrats wait (Are the democrats stupid enough to wait?) for next session, with a better majority?
Oh! i see! they're ASSUMING that their 'get out the fraud' movement won't work.. This time?

And during the few moments that we have left
We want to talk right down to earth
In a language that everybody here can easily understand
Look in my eyes
What do you see?
The cult of personality
I know your anger, I know your dreams
I've been everything you want to be
Oh, I'm the cult of personality
Like Mussolini and Kennedy
I'm the cult of personality
The cult of personality
The cult of personality
Neon lights, a Nobel prize
When a mirror speaks, the reflection lies
You won't have to follow me
Only you can set me free
I sell the things you need to be
I'm the smiling face on your TV
Oh, I'm the cult of personality
I exploit you, still you love me
I tell you, one and one makes three
Oh, I'm the cult of personality
Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi
I'm the cult of personality
The cult of personality
The cult of personality
Neon lights, a Nobel prize
When a leader speaks, that leader dies
You won't have to follow me
Only you can set you free
You gave me fortune, you gave me fame
You gave me power in your god's name
I'm every person you need to be
Oh, I'm the cult of personality
I am the cult of, I am the cult of
I am the cult of, I am the cult of
I am the cult of, I am the cult of
I am the cult of, I am the cult of personality

Personally, I always thought it was rude of Scalia to die when he did.
Don Lemon isn’t exactly an intellectual heavyweight.
What Kate said.
This Josh Barro fellow is an asshole even if he makes good points. In a truly just society, Justices should be fair not because of their political appointments, but the left has made it clear Justice is based on political interest, which isn’t extraordinary in history. Indeed that it was ever not the case is extraordinary.
Also, if you believe as Barro does, that a cult of personality is bad, then why the hell do you support selecting justices by politics? Sotomayor should retire if she is no longer capable of doing the job. If she is retiring because Biden is in office now, but Democrats are currently losing in the polls because Biden is in office; then having Sotomayor retire because of Biden’s inability to win a second term seems a bit like of cult of personality for Biden. No, that’s not quite right either. Really, it is a cult of the left only which seeks power regardless of what it takes. So, if Sotomayor needs to go to retain the left’s power over her seat and you can’t get rid of Biden and Harris to secure a win in November, then she must go. Retire bitch, as Barro recalls.
I doubt Joe Biden will do anything for a potential replacement other than mouth a few platitudes written for him after the selection is made by someone else.
The left: Horrors! MAGAs want to select justices that will rule against our political positions. Politics (especially anti Roe, Roe, Roe your vote) is not how Justices should be selected.
Also the left: Retire bitch, we need a YOUNG political vote on the court.
And if Justice Brown is the prototype there must be thousands just as "qualified".
Man...leftists are busy this week, telling the world who can stay and who can leave.
Netanyahu- time for you to go.
Hamas- you stay.
Sotomayor, time for you to go.
Biden? You stay.
Mayorkas? You stay.
Trump? My God...can't we just put you in jail and steal your properties and money?
"I just watched Don Lemon charge Elon Musk with responsibility for words Musk had simply quoted."
And yet, this brain trust was paid millions per year by CNN and considered a reputable source of information.
It appeared to me that she had a hard time in the 1A oral session two days ago. If she cared about herself and the court, she would retire. She’s likely like Biden, though, and will stay on well past her use-by date.

fify!
If it's time for her to retire, it's time to examine her tenure.
Has Sotomayor done anything on the court other than occupy a seat and be Latina?
Was Sotomayor put on the court to do anything but occupy a seat and be Latina?

Really?! After the shenanigans McConnell pulled to get three Supreme Court appointments for Trump, you have gall to claim it is only the left that seeks power regardless of what it takes.
McConnell did everything within his right to do so.
The lawless cretins are the corrupt left.
Interesting to see how long "wise and necessary" lasted.
If Biden gets a SCOTUS appointment, 100% going to be a highly qualified homosexual.
Lemon Musk by Prince Matchyourbelly
Sotomayor can wait until after the election to make her decision, and Barro knows it, or should know it. It isn't like Trump gets elected and immediately takes office- there will be a two month window after November for the Democrats to replace her.
Every time I hear lefties make the “retire now” comments (and consider who they are likely to select for the court - and it’s lifetime tenure) I am reminded of how lucky we are to have dodged the Merrick Garland bullet.
“Moderate” my ass.
McConnell did everything within his right to do so.
Did I ever say it wasn't? I still consider it extremely sleazy.
"Reliably liberal"
Hah. There is nothing liberal about Ketanji Brown Jackson. She showed this week that she doesn't just misunderstand the 1st Amendment, she hates it. She is a run-of-the-mill hard leftist, concerned the Constitution might be used to limit government power. If Sotomayor retires we will get another like her, just as illiberal.
Field Marshall Freder: "Really?! After the shenanigans McConnell pulled to get three Supreme Court appointments for Trump, you have gall to claim it is only the left that seeks power regardless of what it takes."
LOL!
Hey Field Marshall, would you care to share with the class precisely what the Biden Rule is and where it came from and how it PERFECTLY suited the stiff arming of the Garland nomination?
And do we really need to revisit Harry Reid's 2013 nuking of the 4 decade old Senate rule for a 60 vote threshold/filibuster for nominated federal judges (and other executive offices: The Harry Reid/Democratical Rule) that the republicans used during the Gorsuch nomination process?
In Field Marshall Freder Bizarro World Of Perpetual New Soviet Democratical Political Advantage:
"Shenanigans" = utilizing The Biden Rule to stiff Garland and The Harry Reid/democratical Rule to advance Gorsuch
Yesterday's leverage, is today's "burden".
Sotomayor should never have been a judge in the first place. And I don't mean a Supreme Court justice. I mean a judge in general. Her actions on the high court have done nothing but confirm this position.
That said, she's far better than Ketanji Brown Jackson, who does not fulfill the minimum requirements for a government official. Her argument that she does not want the First Amendment to restrict the government when that's the entire point of the First Amendment is an immediate disqualification.
Shorter Drago (that sounds impossible, lol):
Quit your bitching, it's the Democrats fault we have a Most Catholic Supreme Court. Obozo got pussy whipped and didn't have the balls to recess appoint any SCROTUS candidates. Then the DNC pushed Hitlery, the only swinging dick who could possibly lose to Trump. QED
Yesterday's leverage, is today's "burden".
Indeed. We were told Sotomayor was the wise Latina the court needed. Biden was the uniter that would bring Americans back together. In 2024, we are told for the good of the country they just need to go. Resign, die, whatever, but go and go now.
Democrats NEVER learn any lessons because they are too busy telling everybody else how to live.

Some of my best friends are unquotable.
I have seen needlepoint art of Ginsberg, Hilary Clinton, and Michelle Obama. At least Elvis on black velvet is fun, those others just seemed weird to me.
… but the effort was quite rude.
@Althouse, you liberals, as a class of alleged human beings, have been quite rude since circa 1972. And you’ve only gotten worse in the intervening half century plus. Admit it! Deep inside you believe that the only reason anyone disagrees with your positions is because we knuckle-dragging conservatives do not appreciate the wonderfulness of your reasoning. And most liberals are even worse than you.
The Democrats understand the SCOTUS is the key to Power in the Government. They are now going to decide if Trump goes to jail or not. Or whether the immigration laws can be enforced or not.
However, the SCOTUS doesn't spend $$. Which is all the GOP establishment and the sainted "Moderates" really care about. Hence, the passion gap on nominees. The Democrats in Congress scream abuse at the Rightwing judges and try to manipulate the Leftwing ones to leave or stay depending on the situation. While, the DC Republicans don't want to fight to get hard right judges confirmed.
Sotormayor isnt going to leave to please her Democrat "friend", unless leftwing Billionaire bribes her with a massive book deal and well-paying NGO job. Or a cushy life giving speeches at 100,000 dollars a pop.
I might mean let's talk about this or this is crazy or this is articulated colorfully.
@Althouse, you are not shy about pushing back against an article that you post about, so lack of pushback by you may not be a guarantee that you fundamentally agree with its gist, but it certainly is an indicator.
"In 2021, it seemed that liberals had indeed learned their lesson ..."
No, it did not seem, in 2021 or at any other time, that liberals had learned anything at all.
Besides, the apparatchik Barro is not talking about "liberals", he's talking about Left Fascists like himself.
"I'm not quoting this because I agree with it. I shouldn't have to say that..."
I agree, but it should reduce the number of brushback pitches you have to throw.
Never forget, democrats wake up and think about gaining more political power 24/7.

Chaya Raichek and Libs of TikTok have a few stories to tell in that vein.
I think it's a pretty big leap to attribute Ruth Bader Ginsburg's delay in retiring to a cult of personality. There are too many people in all three branches who have stay on too damn long. It's a phenomenon among members of the boomer generation to stay past the time when they should move out of the way and let the next generation have a shot. Not just government, either.
i've given this a LOT (nearly 2 minutes) of thought.. and i Think i've identified the problem.
Remember the olden days? (anyway, remember HEARING about (and seeing pics of) the olden days?
In the Olden Days, the Capitol Building (and the Supreme Court Building), and IN FACT;
EVERY building in Washington had Tall Majestic Stairs leading up and into the buildings.
IF you were to go in; you'd HAVE TO climb up those Tall Majestic Stairs.
Also, In the Olden Days..
Few politicians/judges/reporters/etc continued climbing those Tall Majestic Stairs in their old age.
They would decide to "retire from public office".. Why? was it the stairs?
Is gilbar implying ADA ramps & elevators are RESPONSIBLE for the geriatric senile LOSERS we're stuck with now?
NO! gilbar is NOT implying it... he is EXPLICITLY STATING it
Everyone who goes to DC gets captured by the money and the adulation.
There are trillions of dollars floating around in the air waiting to be captured.
Too many lawyers and politicians...it's my least favorite place on earth.
After the shenanigans McConnell pulled to get three Supreme Court appointments for Trump
I'll bite. What 'shenanigans' were those? That whole advise and consent thing?

Agreed.
Brown Jackson is running on empty.
I thought it was pretty much agreed that Ginsburg hung on under the assumption that she would be able to swear in Hillary as the first female President (Thank Trump that never happened) before retiring.
The Supreme Court needs to step up its pace because leftwing maverick lower courts keep doing things that are beyond what should be acceptable. SCOTUS can't keep up because Congress is limiting its funds. The Democrats are counting on this. I don't think Roberts is up to changing processes fast enough to stop the crazy crap that Democrats are doing. If Roberts had any balls, he would start issuing things faster just to uphold SCOTUS's power.
