"Wouldn’t it be wiser to stop the madness now and just jam that Silly Putty right back under Ms. Greene’s sofa?"

That's the last sentence of "Impeach Him! No, Him! And Him, Too!" by Michelle Cottle in the NYT.

I made a free access link, in case you feel motivated to decode the quote. I find the metaphoric violence unsettling.

The Trump impeachments were to save democracy, but now it's madness. That's the madness.

Kate म्हणाले...

Of all the forgotten items I've found under a sofa, Silly Putty has never been one of them. If there's a particular reason MTG has some, I didn't read far enough to see.

It never occurs to the Left that we believe Biden is guilty as vehemently as they thought Trump was guilty. I can't read someone who doesn't at least consider that possibility.

Omaha1 म्हणाले...

This, from the article, is simply not true: "...Republicans have repeatedly shown they would rather exploit than productively address. (House Republicans’ refusal to get serious about the bipartisan compromise their Senate counterparts have been sweating blood over is shameful.)". The "Border Security" bill does nothing to secure the border, rather it makes it more convenient for immigrants to arrive in the US unimpeded. The text of the bill was released on a Sunday (of course), and it is even worse than advertised. Immigrants even get free legal assistance with their phony asylum claims!

Leland म्हणाले...

Yes, the Biden impeachment folly is built on a steaming pile of unsubstantiated charges and fever dreams sprung from the House’s conspiracy caucus.

They have the receipts. What was unsubstantiated and turned out to be false was the notion Hunter Biden's laptop was Russian propaganda, just like the Steele Dossier was supposedly proof of Russian collusion with Trump when it was just a fake document written by someone with Democrat sympathies.

like some grimy wad of Silly Putty pulled from under Marjorie Taylor Greene’s sofa.

Maybe funny if she used Pelosi's sofa, since that were this impeach, impeach, impeach came.

The brazenness with which the Democrats are trying to pretend that they didn't already debase the impeachment process is...amusing.

I have no truck with MTG, but the illegal immigrant housing complex at the end of my street just threw up a new dormitory twice the size of the old dormitory, (no inspections or zoning of course: that only happens to citizens) and someone's using my mailbox for target practice with glass Jalisco bottles again.

Gainesville, Georgia. County, Forsyth. Draw your own conclusions. At least when they get someone pregnant, then "retire" early and move to a single-wide elsewhere, not marrying to increase the bennies, and in 11 years they have a daughter to screw, so long as they settle outside my county, where the sheriff actually enforces ICE and molestation laws, much to some of their surprise. Gwinnett county is a good bet for being sprung loos for everything from catastrophic car accidents to child rape, and they don't cooperate with ICE.

Sour, you say? It's a tradition. I can offer much more than one pretty hideous example. Even the "goodpeople" we're bringing here are generally refusing to abide by laws that you don't screw daughters and other pre-teens.

I never thought I'd live in this America. But Big Poultry will do what it wants. Enjoy your child rape chicken in every pot.

tommyesq म्हणाले...

The article is wrong on so many counts - e.g. that Republicans have not put forward evidence of Biden's taking bribes - and deliberately conflates disagreement over policy with the executive branch effectively negating the legislative branch and creating its own immigration law by ignoring the existing laws that were duly passed by Congress (and signed into law by a previous President). But I don't see the metaphorical violence?

I’d never heard of Michelle Cottle until today notwithstanding the fact that Althouse has blogged her before.

I suspect we will see more of this BS argument of the Left, that is, he’s being impeached for a policy difference. No, he isn’t. He’s being impeached for failing to take care that the laws are faithfully executed. That’s right in the Constitution.

I constantly see this 2 + 2 = 5 from the Left. And that’s because that’s all they’ve got. Amazingly, some people fall for it.

Cottle also claims there is no proof that Joe’s been bribed. Plenty of proof; checks, in fact. 2 + 2 = 5.

Does the NYT already forget?

3rd. The reason people didn't used to impeach over policy, is because it is STUPID
Stupid.. IF you don't have the votes to convict.
Why HAVEN'T democrats impeached the Supreme Court? Because it takes 2/3rds to convict. The Only Reason

I live in the Midwest. I keep up with news but don’t read the NYT. I read this article because you shared it. I’m both bewildered and appalled by this piece. How can the author be so obtuse? On reflection, I’m sure she would say the same of me. I suppose our whole country is at an impasse, and it’s not metaphorical.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

First paragraph reads:

“Just when you thought House Republicans couldn’t warp the impeachment process any more, here we are, watching them twist and stretch this weighty constitutional provision beyond all recognition — like some grimy wad of Silly Putty pulled from under Marjorie Taylor Greene’s sofa.”

Apparently Ms. Cottle is younger than 4 or she might have known about Pelosi’s abuse of the process w.r.t. Donald Trump. She certainly writes as though her mental age is 4 or thereabouts. You know, if the impeachment process cannot be used to remove an incompetent twit like Mayorkas who declined to do his job, then what’s the point of the process?

Temujin म्हणाले...

Truly the least curious people in the United States live in New York City these days.

Quaestor म्हणाले...

Michelle Cottle and everyone who works at 620 Eighth Avenue (except the custodians) have criminal mentalities. Huh? you say say. They're thieves?! Perhaps, but that's not the point. Criminals enjoy exploring an advantage and abhor even odds. This is why mass murderers attack gun-free zones like public schools. Miss Cottle thinks the same way. Impeachment is a weapon she and her colleagues love when her side points it at her perceived enemy and abhors when it's pointed at her allies.

Mike (MJB Wolf) म्हणाले...

Thanks for the free access link. I didn’t even know that was possible. I have two immediate reactions: the metaphor is no clearer for having speed-read her article and boy does she employ overheated prose laced with myth nuggets (“Muslim ban”?) that Progressives love love love to recount to each other in the misinformational way they do.

Kai Akker म्हणाले...

---"Just think of all the fun we could have had with the Trump administration"

Really, why do you bother with this insular silliness?

I see the NYTimes is going for the "Bang the Table" defense of Secretary Mayorkas.

Tank म्हणाले...

We are awash in never ending BS, so much here that Althouse could deconstruct for a month and just scratch the surface. A perfect example of why you can’t discuss politics with the left, they live in a different reality, or unreality.

Mike (MJB Wolf) म्हणाले...

So I reread it and no, it’s just not a good analogy with the unnecessary and distracting inclusion of Ms. Greene’s sofa. If you twist and pull Silly Putty then you’re doing what it’s designed to do and it will not become “unrecognizable” by virtue of being played with. I’m starting to think she’s not only poor at constructing analogies and marshaling facts (true facts that is) to support her premise but she’s never actually played with Silly Putty or even watched while someone else did. Only that trick they show in the commercial, where the putty is smashed onto a comic in a newspaper and peals away with a reverse image, is somewhat destructive and then only because it starts looking dirty when applied that way. At the most basic level of play Silly Putty is intended to be stretched and twisted.

Again, thank you for the link. Her article is thought provoking but not in the way that she intended. The unsaid part, where she carefully avoids any mention of the ridiculous premises on which Trump was impeached would have added more context with less stupidity. After all that is the context for what is happening now, the fact Pelosi’s House lowered the bar for impeachment to the level of a phone call asking if the Ukraine had found evidence of corruption in the Hunter-Joe-Burisma miasma. Then J6. The only post-presidential impeachment in history. Do those not bear on the current political landscape?

gadfly म्हणाले...

So when Ann finds "metaphoric violence" unsettling, it doesn't change normality.

From Lakoff and Johnson's "Metaphors We Live By," comes Argument is War:

Your claims are indefensible.
He attacked every weak point in my argument.
His criticisms were right on target.
I demolished his arguments.
I never won an argument with him.
You disagree? Okay, shoot!
If you use that strategy, he'll wipe you out.
He shot down all of my arguments.

It is important to see that we don't just talk about arguments in terms of war. We can actually win and lose arguments.

@Temujin: Truly the least curious people in the United States live in New York City these days.

Every country becomes like that over time. Those who self-sort and gravitate to the power and prestige establishment centers (NYC, DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, etc.) have their eyes on the prize. They often resent their own humble origins, they coin terms such as "flyover country," and they feel boundless disgust for the little people. Blind ambition plus overcompensation.

I'm a few counties south of you and it is the same all over Georgia. Also, if you read the Hall County (Gainesville, Georgia) police blotter (slightly NE of Forsyth), child molestation and rape is the number one crime for arrests each and every week. Geez, I hope we believe that Biden is guilty more than that! I don't think Pelosi and Schumer et al ever really believed Trump was guilty of anything, they just thought he was a threat to their power.

gadfly म्हणाले...

Mike (MJB Wolf):

You really need to review your facts. The first Trump impeachment involved his withholding of Congressional funds already approved for dispersal to Ukraine which would be released in exchange for a fake claim that Biden made money because his son worked for Burisma. This call occurred because Guliani couldn't find real or made-up evidence against Papa Joe (and no evidence has ever been found). That perfect phone call was an offer of bribery.

As for the January 6 incident, Trump was serving as president when he attempted his coup. Now as a past president, he has been found liable by multiple grand juries for 91 misdeeds under the law.

What the media outlets catering to affluent liberals do, similar to what Bill Maher does, or those late night 'comedians' do is operate on the same dynamic as the old-time minstrel shows. Colbert's show may as well have been done in black face, since the whole premise was that he was pretending, with a big and obvious wink to his audience, to be a conservative. A minstrel show.

I need to review MY facts? How about we just rely on the actual events then? Trump did NOT withhold the funds, he asked about withholding them in a way that idiots like you have twisted into a request that was not made nor obeyed. IN FACT Ukraine got the money on time. And most sentient people are aware that Biden has actually delayed and denied aid to Ukraine over and over. This fragment of your "argument" is especially savory: "he has been found liable by multiple grand juries for 91 misdeeds under the law." So you don't know what Grand Juries do, you don't really know what they did, and in your small mind Trump has been found guilty (although your weasel words "misdeeds" and "liable" might indicate that somewhere back in your noggin you can't say this is certain) without a trial* even being concluded. Gadlfy, no money was delayed to Ukraine. None of it. The impeachment was because Democrats claimed Trump made a quid pro quo out of the funding. Actually the first Trump impeachment hearing out of committee simply said they were impeaching because they had the political authority to do so. Biden this year tried to get a quid pro quo for Ukraine funding by tying it to border security. These are the rules you wanted. At least Republicans are using better arguments than you keep making here.

As for Mayorkas, the Senate Bill basically broadcasts that they want more of what Mayorkas has been selling which is an invasion of 1.8 million illegal border crossings a year with the ability for a President to declare an emergency and allow much more. This is why elections are more important than impeachments and why Trump leads in the polls.

AlbertAnonymous म्हणाले...

Ok I broke down and read the piece. It’s typical NYT left wing bubble talking point and Trump hatred. Here’s my favorite line:

“By putting the secretary through an impeachment inquiry, Donald Trump’s congressional team is putting Mr. Biden’s border record on trial in the midst of a high-stakes presidential contest.”

Donald Trump’s Congressional Team? Ok. Whatevs.

I also like the part where she claims she doesn’t like the Biden Admin’s handling of the border crisis either, but chalks it up to (as is typical ) some sort of combination of fumbling, lack of communication about the issue so people don’t really understand how hard they’re working to fix a problem the MAGA-heads created.

But hey, we should all listen to Michelle. She’s been covering Washington “since the Clinton administration.” Totes, guys.

Wouldn't it be wiser if a giant sinkhole were to appear in Manhattan? And the building of the Gray Lady and its occupants simply disappeared. Or at least were muted. That's what the left wants to do, has been doing to the right. And as the playground taunt goes, What Goes Around Comes Around. You change the rules, don't whine when the rule changes come around to bite you in the backside. Didn't our new "Light" Worker say "punch back twice as hard"?

Meanwhile--and just to prove that it's equally as silly as the New York Times, today's Los Angeles Times has an op ed piece saying that California could balance its state budget by releasing all prisoners from the state prisoner system. No need to keep giving those frisky felons three hots and a cot. Turn them loose and let them forage for subsistence on the civilian population.

"It would indeed be a major scandal if a vice president abused his office — taking bribes, even — to enrich himself and his family. House Republicans have yet to produce evidence that Mr. Biden did anything of the sort. But if ever they do, it will be wild times for sure!"

Pretty big window she left open. The rant reeks of flop sweat.

Gift link worked once but I didn't try it again in case it would lock the access.

“By putting the secretary through an impeachment inquiry, Donald Trump’s congressional team is putting Mr. Biden’s border record on trial in the midst of a high-stakes presidential contest.”

And the problem with that is?

If "Mr. Biden’s border record" (I wonder why he's not "President Biden"?) is bad and hurting the country, why shouldn't it be "put on trial in the midst of a high-stakes presidential contest"? Oh, that's right, the NYT isn't in favor of informing voters.

If there's nothing wrong with "Mr. Biden’s border record", then "putting Mr. Biden’s border record on trial" should help Mr. Biden's re-election campaign, no.

It's like you have to get a lobotomy in order to be allowed to write for the NYT

There's Howard, once again projecting on the Right what is actually on the Left.

Or did the Biden Admin not just do Putin a huge favor by blocking expansion of US LNG to Europe, thus leaving them to buy from Putin?

Do you EVER bother to think before you write, Howard?

Stephen Colbert and his “Late Show” team came up with a joke so bawdy, they couldn’t even show it on TV. And it was aimed at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) or, as Colbert called her, the “cursed doll fashioned from silly putty and hate.”

- From Oct. '22.

I think that is a reference to her complexion and somewhat puffy face. How Cottle turned it into a rape dildo, I don't know. Possibly from personal experience.

Next week - "Those Slinky Republicans and the Clacker Superball Trumpsters."

Note at 4:07 EST the free link still works. This time I opened it on my laptop.

Yes it does start to load the "log in or subscribe" script but quickly relaces the fade-out text with the whole article. IMO it provided for a rather detailed and lively Fisking/group discussion. Those us not regularly exposed to the full NYT article were properly shocked by the low quality of the writing, which was only surpassed by the cognitive dissonance of her "reasoning."

FWBuff म्हणाले...

Substance aside, Cottle is really a terrible writer. She has mixed so many metaphors and uses such a weird folksy tone, that it's hard to see the forest for the cheese.

Allowing 8 million illegal aliens into the country has awfully serious economic, social, political, and military consequences.”

The senate bill codifies 1.8 million illegal aliens per YEAR!!! Per YEAR!!! Anyone supporting this bill is a an actual traitor to this country. How can you allow 0.5% of the population to be imported EVERY YEAR! In 45 years you would replace a quarter of the country.

Literal traitors.

Leland म्हणाले...

Looking at the Senate Bill, I think we can see the establishments game. They don’t need a bill to secure the border that’s already supposed to be closed. They need a bill that makes it permanently open before Trump becomes President. It codifies a minimum acceptable level of illegal crossings at 1.8 million a year. This is despite polls showing the majority of Americans by a large margin, and the more people have to deal with these absurd numbers of illegal border crossers, the more they want to put a stop to it. The only thing stopping them is a small majority in the House, and if McCarthy was still Speaker, you can bet the non-border Republicans would vote open borders to become the law.

Tina Trent म्हणाले...

Thank you, CSF.

We have the largest population of illegal immigrants in the country per zip code.

Surprising? Not to me. Those of us in rape crisis are dissuaded from tackling minor-age rape cases here.

What do you think of that, Ann? That we're supposed to normalize this, Ann?

Jesus fucking wept. I encourage you to read some of the trial transcripts. You have Lexus.

You also have a platform. Do some fucking thing about it.

boatbuilder म्हणाले...

If Mayorkas/Biden simply started enforcing the law and controlling the border (instead of saying "We can't do anything and it's the Republicans' fault") the Republican impeachment would be a political failure.

It won't be, because Biden/Mayorkas own the border disaster. And the purpose of this impeachment is to show the American public, which isn't particularly fond of either party but wants the damn border fixed (and doesn't think it's all that hard to do, because every other country in the world does it, and there are things like walls and helicopters and the National Guard which can be deployed by the wealthiest nation on Earth) that the Biden Administration has actively and enthusiastically created and promoted the invasion.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

I think Leland might well have unraveled the mystery of this bill. Now, I don't think Trump will be allowed to win no matter how many votes he gets, but this bill might well be an attempt to tie his hands should he by some miracle actually take office again. The courts would certainly use its existence as an excuse to block any attempt to reduce the flow of illegals into the country.

Greg: "Or did the Biden Admin not just do Putin a huge favor by blocking expansion of US LNG to Europe, thus leaving them to buy from Putin?"

Howard's entire middle school schtick is to take whatever the New Soviet Democraticals have done historically and what they are doing now and simply declare its the republicans.

Slavery, Jim Crow, segregation,...all the way to obamacare (yes, Howard really did claim republicans "owned" obamacare) with the Putin projections being the most recent and pathetic.

Howard gonna Howard...but only every time.

"Unexpectedly".
