"[Jon] Stewart intends to host 'The Daily Show' through Election Day. In order to succeed, whoever comes after him will need to avoid the excesses of the format..."

"... that he popularized: so-called clapter comedy, a phrase that has been credited to [Seth] Meyers which describes the kind of jokes that, instead of making audiences laugh, elicit applause by pandering to their preëxisting beliefs. Stewart resorted to such lines at least occasionally during his tenure; in the Trump era, the tactic exploded. The use of clapter as a crutch, and a general ethos against 'punching down' among moral-minded standups, has rendered much of today’s political comedy predictable...."

Writes Inkoo Kang, in "Jon Stewart Knows 'The Daily Show' Can’t Save Democracy/The comedian transformed the late-night landscape before his departure almost a decade ago—and returns to reckon with a nation that’s been transformed, too" (The New Yorker).

Surprising take from The New Yorker. And from Seth Meyers, a guy who relied heavily on clapter at SNL.

There's big demand for well packaged political propaganda. Stewart can meet that demand. The left has lots of platforms, but things like The View are clumsy and repetitive. If only Jon Stewart were the only person who had to endure the consequences of his propaganda.

If you can't smell the globalist desperation in bringing Mr. Stewart-Leibowitz back, you're nose-blind.

They always do this when they're caught, just like Anita Sarkeesian hosting the show after gamergate started going mainstream.

It's damage control directed at proles.

Aggie म्हणाले...

Putting it right out there: The only reason Stewart is here, is because it's an election year.

The unspoken part: The only reason Stewart is here, is because Trump is running and Democracy is in Danger, and Stewart hates Trump, like every good Democrat.

The secret unspoken part: Remember, comrades: Democracy is only for Democrats. If you're not a Democrat, then you qualify for treatments prescribed for the infidel, a 'lower' person, an apostate: Taqiyya, shunning, unpunished violence, selective persecution, and so forth. With the infidel, the ends justify the means.

All prog humor is clapter. Political comedy was predictable yesterday too, having devolved into prog propaganda.

The ethos against punching down must be the reason "political comedy" doesn't make fun of that nice old man with failing memory, grandpa Joe.

Nonsense. Every joke under Stewart was clapter.
Almost every joke was some version of "heh. 'publicans is stoopid".

I watched the Daily show for over a decade. I turned it off when I realized all it was was clapter. I realized that when I fell out of the target audience and stopped clapping.

Yah. "Clown nose on, Clown nose off" Stewart (nee, Leibowitz) can indeed go "eff himself" as a previous commentor said first, IMHO. And the limo he rode in on too. At least that's what my grandchildren tell me.

I started watching near the end of the Bush administration. Lots of mocking of Bush and Cheney, but hey- those in power often deserve it. I was curious when Obama was elected how they'd deal with him. As it turned out, with lots of mocking of Bush and Cheney. I stopped watching and never went back. Comedy is entertaining, propaganda not so much.

An annoying sentence in the article:

Paraphrase: Visiting the old Daily show was like checking in everynight with your smartest friend.

that's the problem with Libtards, they really are impressed by Jon Stewart. They really truly think they're "smart" for reading the NYT's and watching the Daily Show. The midwittery is extremely pathetic.

My break with the Daily show came in 2004. I truly believed Stewart was a "reasonable liberal" willing to skewer both sides and go after the pompous nitwits in power.

So, when Rathergate came along with Dan Rather pompous absurd defenses and lies about his fake documents [Lucy Rameriz (!)] I thought this is something Stewart will mock and satirize. And...Stewart didn't touch it. Said nothing about it for weeks, then made a mild "both sides are bad" joke. And that was that.

And I assume this will be his pattern till election day 2024. All the easy targets Hunter Biden, Biden's lies and half-truths and corruption, will be passed over in favor of few mild "Gosh, biden is such an old geezer" or "wow, did you hear about Biden's gaffe?" while Trump and his supporters will be mocked and attacked and painted as stupid, criminal, and racist.

The New Yorker author also discuses Late nite comedy which no one watches anymore.

rcocean म्हणाले...

BTW, one can do lots of fun comedy without "punching down". you just have to make fun of leftist, democrats, and the rich and powerful.

Which most TV comedians cant do. They can only go after the safe targets: Trump, Republicans, Christianity, etc.

The format was an excess in itself. It became the go-to news source for many people, despite it being a comedy show. Mr. Stewart would play the game that other people have described as "clown nose off, clown nose on" where he would act as a serious, albeit heavily biased and joke filled, news source and then when called out on would claim he is just a comedian.

You are what your audience says you are.

Quaestor म्हणाले...

Kate writes, "The diaresis makes me stabby."

I agree with Kate, but not in degree. Those dots make me slashy across the windpipeÿ.

What a slothful hipster affectation is diaeresis, or diaëresis, or better still, diæresis where English has been quite happy without them. A monocle would be far more respectable. Firstly, you'd have to find one. That takes effort, whereas the un-needed diacritic is as easy as macOS. Sẽě? I cán adűtęrætê mý vœwëls with nary an escape code. If writers for Duh Nooyawkuh used Gates' Grotesque or the übernerdisch Linux, they wouldn't touch them flyspecks with a ten-foot ellipsis. Those tasks are a smidgen too technical for their busy-busy posing schedule to permit.

Brontë is often cited as an example of diaeresis in English, along with naïve. However, naïve is French and Brontë is a complete pretense on the part of the famously ink-smeared sisters' daddykins who felt shortchanged by his actual surname, Brunty.

Not only is preëxisting an affectation, it's stupid. How can a bore like Stewart pander to beliefs that do not preexist his feeble philippics? Do you want to what really going on? Preëxisting belief is Inkoo Kang trying to avoid the appropriate word, bigotry, which the stylebook forbids application to anyone inclined to vote Democratic

Quaestor म्हणाले...

Note to Howard, simpleminded witticisms are more simpleminded than witty when one neglects his articles. Or perhaps you were going for the Boris Badenov feckless villain effect? If so, Fearless Leader is unimpressed, considering liquidation.

Hollywood Reporter has a story about backlash against Stewart with some critics accusing him of being like Bill Maher. (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/jon-stewart-biden-criticizing-white-house-1235824591/):

"A self-described Democratic activist tweeted, “Jon Stewart retired and came back as Bill Maher. I had a Jon Stewart for President shirt and rarely missed a show. So disappointing.” (And, yes, apparently Stewart being on Apple TV+ for his recent show The Problem is basically like being retired)."

Makes me recall Maher's statement - when people criticized him a while back - that he hadn't changed. (https://deadline.com/2022/01/bill-maher-fires-back-says-his-politics-have-not-changed-1234922380/) I think that's true.

The problem, it seems, is our tribalism. Quit fighting for your team, and start fighting for principles.

The problem with humor in 2024 is that if you are a left wing Democrat, then all humor must be directed against Trump and the Republicans. And if you are a right wing Republican, then all humor must be directed against Biden and the Democrats. I am so old that I remember when comics used to skewer both sides, like Johnny Carson and early Jay Leno. But I guess those days are long gone. Now all humor and entertainment has to be politically correct -- left wing if you are a Democrat, and right wing if you are a Republican. We all lose when this is what happens.

Yeah, the problem is BOTH SIDES are stuck in Tribalism. LOL. No, the problem is you have a small group with views reprsenting maybe 35 percent of USA in total control of the MSM and Entertainment Industry.

Anyway, back in the old days Stewart went on Crossfire and spent the entire show attacking Tucker Carlson, y'know the CONSERVATIVE. He didn't attack "Both sides". But he is a rich old Hollywood Jewish guy, so he will attack the Democrats if they don't suport Israel or Ukraine or Stewart thinks they're trying to "soak the rich" and attack Big Business. After all, HE"S rich.

And he will also mock/attack the Democrats if they do something crazy like refuse to jail criminals or push for something far outside the current "NYT/WaPo Party Line". I'm sure he will make fun of AOC or Rev. Sharpton or Bernie.

But that's it. His prefered targets will/are small town/rural whites, Republicans,Christians, and social conservatives. IOW, the same people the New Yorker or the NYT/Wapo doesn't like.

He's not going to attack Biden on anything other then "Hey, he might be bad for Democrats, maybe we can nominate someone else" or "Hey, look at Good ol' Joe, forgot what year it was, or made a funny gaffe, hoho".

rcocean म्हणाले...

And the problem with comedy isn't that you cant "Punch down", its that you cant attack people the Left think are "protected classes". So, no gay jokes. No trans jokes. No women jokes. No Black/Hispanic/jewish jokes (unless you're of that group). No Islam jokes.

You can make fun of white men. And Christians. And rednecks and hicks. In other words, you can pretend its still 1975, and you're George Carlin or Richard Pryor mocking the powerful. Weirdly, you can still make fun of Russians. Since they're back to being the bad guys.
