"This has been the mystery of the Trump era — every time we think this is the final straw, it turns into a steel beam that merely solidifies his political infrastructure."

Said Eliot Spitzer, a man who resigned for nothing more than using prostitutes.

I think the reason Spitzer — and let's throw in Al Franken — didn't stand their ground and fight is that they were beholden to their political party. Trump never was in thrall to other Republicans. He took over the party. Who holds sway with him?

The article also has this quote from Trump: "Other people, if they ever got indicted, they’re out of politics. They go to the microphone. They say, ‘I’m going to spend the rest of my life, you know, clearing my name. I’m going to spend the rest of my life with my family.' I've seen it hundreds of times.... I can tell, you know, it’s backfired on them."

Maybe some of these others — Spitzer, Franken — would have prevailed if they'd fought. But it's hard to believe that other beleaguered politicians will fight like Trump. The Trump example shows that by fighting, you attract endless woes — multiple impeachments, felony charges, efforts to confiscate all of your wealth, the most miserable smears on your character. But Trump fights, and it's an amazing spectacle.

I think the Trump spectacle has shown us how far we've fallen as a society.

I won't get into Trump's base, but look at the opposite side. The fact that Trump has been soup to nuts investigated for 7+ years including his initial political campaign being spied on by the FBI, special prosecutors, investigation by his political opponents, openly prejudicial state AGs who commit to prosecuting him as they start investigating, faulty media smears over and over, publication of literally falsified "dossiers", FBI raids, rumors he took nuclear documents with him....

On top of which he was impeached for asking the Ukrainian President to investigate the Bidens due to how badly Biden behavior in Ukraine appeared (which, I'd say, has fairly well held up as we've now directed $75 billion to Ukraine).

I can't even list all the "Sky is falling" scandals. What have they actually come up with besides constant unseemly behavior by Trump? What actual guilty judgements have been rendered by fair and impartial juries?

They have and continue to make fools out of themselves. They've lost all credibility. And they don't see it.

Franken was a victim of bad timing—his transgressions came out at the precise moment the left thought it could use sexual harassment to do real damage to the right. He sacrificed himself to keep the witch hunt going. Spitzer is a bit different because he was a scold who self-righteously imprisoned people for doing the exact thing he did. The hypocrisy was so stark it would’ve been hard to wriggle out. Having lost the moral high ground, his effectiveness was sure to follow.

Fortunately, Trump seems to love the fight. He’s the pig you don’t want to wrestle with. It’s all worth it to get himself in the history books—which he has surely done.

"Client #9" reinvented himself in 2014 when he went to work for his father’s company, Spitzer Engineering, which he rebranded Spitzer Enterprises.

The firm built iconic properties such as 200 Central Park South and 800 Fifth Avenue — the luxury apartment tower overlooking Central Park that Spitzer now calls home. In 2014 and 2015, he sold two properties his father had accumulated and got started on two projects of his own: a three-tower, 857-unit rental development on the Williamsburg waterfront in Brooklyn and a mixed-use project with Related Companies in Hudson Yards, which will have 1.4 million square feet of residential and office space.

So he too has become a genuine New York real estate magnate, but Eliot Spitzer (no longer "Client #9") respects the rule of law and isn't likely to be sued or run out of town by Tish James to disgorge $250M as is the case with TFG.

As far as pols being dependent on the party, I think you are exactly right about the Democrats. The Democrat Affirmative Action coalition has been a zero-sum "I scratch your back and you scratch mine" proposition since at least the 1960s if not go back to FDR. Without a party structure to do the horse-trading that wouldn't work, and a pol that isn't plugged into the party structure gets little support.

Republican politicians have had more flexibility because the GOP coalition in the same time period (Religious conservatives, National Security, Business) had largely congruent goals that didn't require the same trade-offs.

Trump has gained control of the GOP because he's brought Populists into the party at a time when other groups were exiting though it remains to be seen if the coalition is actually stable.

This is close to correct, I suppose, but here is the truth that isn't mentioned here- Spitzer and Franken were actually guilty of some of the things of which they were accused. There isn't any real doubt Spitzer was buying the services of prostitutes and the Tweedon photograph isn't in doubt either (some of the other claims against Franken are less certain, but the people making those claims weren't Republicans, so the political motivation to lie isn't clear-cut).

In the case of Trump, the Democrats have been warping the law to make actions Trump took look like crimes- they are basically using novel, never before used legal interpretations of statutes to charge Trump with criminal activity. An innocent man should never bend the knee to his persecutors- in fact, he should knee his persecutors in the groin as often as possible. This is why Trump might well be indispensible- he fights back against the very worst Americans in politics.

This really did start with Bill Clinton. When the Lewinsky story first broke, it was generally assumed that, if it were true, he'd be finished, he'd have to resign. But he calculated that was a skillful politician that he could hold together enough support within his party and with the voters that he could ride it out. Part of the calculation was that the public would turn on the GOP for pursuing the sordid matter so tenaciously. In any event, the assumption that he was mortally wounded, once tested, proved to be false.

It's similar with Trump. He's proven repeatedly that there are enough people who either like his policies, like HIM for being sort of a renegade, or who HATE everything the deep state and leftists are doing to the country, that he can at least weather the blows that have been dealt him, if not use them to his advantage. Eliot Spitzer seems rather late to the party in coming to that realization.

Better analogy is Bill Clinton - who should have resigned when the Lewinsky affair came to light - but simply refused.

Bruce Hayden म्हणाले...

“What the fuck is supposed to be the comparison? Trump is accused of ‘crimes’ invented by the opposition party. “

Trump is supposed to give into supposed crimes fabricated by his enemies.

He was impeached twice:
- for questioning the corrupt deal made between the Biden’s and the Ukrainian govt.
- for questioning the corrupt election that installed Biden as President through very obvious election fraud.

He is also defending himself in four criminal trials:
- FL: made up crimes by the same DOJ (Counterintelligence and Export Branch) and FBI (Counterintelligence Division) orgs that sabotaged his candidacy, and then Presidency, starting in summer of 2016. We are talking about the orgs behind RussiaGate, Crossfire Hurricane, Mueller investigation, esp. The real target of the MAL raid was likely the binder of documents that Trump ordered declassified his last full day in office, that implicated these two organizations in gross misfeasance and malfeasance. It’s orchestrated by the head of that DOJ unit, Jay Bratt, who is also Smith’s Deputy Special Counsel.
- DC: J6 “Insurrection”, orchestrated by Pelosi, her Capital Police, and the FBI. In response again to the blatantly stolen election through very visible election fraud.
- GA: the prosecutor defending the GA portion of the election fraud.
- NY: AG ran for election on platform of getting Trump. It’s using made up values of properties to allege that he filed false property value estimates, that the lenders have stated they didn’t rely on, and would have committed malpractice if they had. The Court used appraised property values, which invariably are inaccurate, and in this case grossly so, as testified by RE experts.

In the law, there are traditionally two types of crimes: Malum Prohibitum and Malum In Se. Both Spitzer and Franken can be argued to have engaged in Malum In Se types of crimes. Trump’s alleged crimes don’t even rise to the level of Malum Prohibitum, because the interpretations utilized by prosecutors invariably involve LawFare type (and with even actual LawFare participation in some cases) cutting and pasting of statutes, using novel applications of the law. Because they are novel interpretations of existing statutes, it is likely that any convictions would be overturned on appeal, on Due Process grounds, because there was no reason for Trump to have known that his behavior had been criminal at the time he engaged in it. And, yes, since these prosecutions were saved up for late 2023, and are all running into 2024, they are fairly obvious and egregious attempts at election interference.

So, the question is, why should Trump quit in the face of very obvious election interference by highly political prosecutors engaging in LawFare constructed prosecutions that are unlikely to survive appeal?

Personally, I think that he should have dug his heels in and stayed. This is a preface to my point that his actions demonstrate that he loves America and his foreign policy of America First is again demonstrably patriotic. Everything Biden has said and done demonstrates his dislike for average Americans and disinterest in the pain he has caused: the crippling inflation, the disastrous Afghan fiasco that to this day has our citizens and allies stranded under Taliban tyranny. He paid Iran billions of dollars to release a few hostages but hasn’t lifted a finger or done anything about almost a dozen kidnapped by Hamas. He wouldn’t shut up about a stupid lesbian WNBA player because he’s keen on pandering for votes when not hectoring blacks who might consider Trump. Name one thing he's doing great. Just one.

Said Eliot Spitzer, a man who resigned for nothing more than using prostitutes.

His job was enforcing the law, and he was violating it.

Franken ran on the Democrat "respect women" platform, and was caught violating that.

Trump? Trump has apparently not committed a single crime int eh last 10 years. Because with all their law fare, they've yet to come up with a single actual crime to charge him with.

I know I couldn't survive the kind of investigation Trump's been under. And neither could 90%+ of Americans.

He talks a lot and says things people like to hear but nobody can name an instance when he has fought for others.

Obvious lie. Or brain dead commenter. There are rational arguments to be made about Trump. Put on your thinking cap and stop with the stupid shit already.

"This has been the mystery of the Trump era — every time we think this is the final straw, it turns into a steel beam that merely solidifies his political infrastructure."

There's no mystery: just like in Palestine, the people who did the original 'wrong' (the Democrats and the Zionists) are, years later, still trying to make it credible, and permanent, by piling on ever more heinous wrongs. But everyone can see through it, except for those people who've supported the original 'wrong,' who are now left wallowing in cognitive dissonance, instead.

Once again, the opponents of Trump fail to realize he is merely a symptom of our disgust with them, not a love affair with Trump. Should Trump stroke out tonight, our disgust with his opposition would remain. And they might not like what gets chosen to replace him.
