"When, at 7, she finds her father weeping, he asks her to 'lick the tears from my eyes.'"

"The request makes her 'queasy,' but she obeys, in an act of both strange devotion and deep unease. 'I had taken something of my father’s into me, something intimate — his liquids and his lonely need,' she writes."

"... Carrière grew up shuttling back and forth between a 17,000-square-foot townhouse in New York City’s West Village and a penthouse in Paris...."

Why are so many wealthy people sick pervo creeps?

When they broadcast Martin Luther King's funeral on television, my foster father put on his overalls and got a bucket, to catch his tears as he cried. I was a child, so I can't remember how long I could bear that level of sorrow.

I'm just glad he didn't ask me to lick his tears.

I've got tears in my ears, from lying on my back, crying over you.

No licking!

“His liquids and his lonely needs”? Good god.

Sometimes, no, most times, I think we just can’t get enough of ourselves.

When I'm watching a news report about Joe Biden, I often start crying. My dog notices and seems to want to lick my tears. But since she also licks her nether regions, I resist her woeful looks. Best for us both.

Socially connected humans are need factories. When they have no objective needs, they create them.

What, Professor, do you find interesting about these truly privileged and simultaneously fucked up people?

I don’t see the attraction. They’re fucking weirdos….

Heartbreaking stories, so woody Allen-esque and so unattached to most of America.

I'm 70. Just a little younger than our gracious host. Another funeral. Another old man. Another old friend.

You can hate someone's politics, but still love their music.

“I had taken something of my father’s into me, something intimate — his liquids and his lonely need,” she writes. When she starts hurting herself around the same time, “each cut organized into legible symbols the confusion of cravings — my father’s, my mother’s, my own — that made me feel like too much and eventually nothing.”

I sincerely hope she was near a couch when she composed that prose.

"How do I love thee, let me cut the veins."

Wait, if she's licking his tears, then isn't she's impurifying his precious bodily fluids? Dammit, Mandrake, she's sapping and impurifying!

So, just like most of us.

Does the times advertise for F'up up people with a celebrity hook?

My brothers and I used to pick skinflakes off our father's sunburned back in the summer, and my mother's siblings recalled picking "buckshot" out of their grandfather's (my namesake--rode with Forrest) shoulder as late as the 1920s.

Nothing about tears, and I pick my own sunburned skinflakes when available.
