We don't have any snow yet, but we have the next best thing: persistent frost. We've had clear skies lately, with weak sunlight and clear nights. The temperature's dropped into the high 20s to the low 30s. The water vapor's been freezing as frost and it's been building up where the Sun doesn't shine.

Our house is surrounded by a forest of cedars, maples and hemlock firs (100-ft or more tall) on three sides with only the north exposure clear of trees. The trees block the sunlight most of the time, with only a few hours of weak sunlight shining through at midday. By 2:30, the shadows are engulfing the yard.

The frost makes it hard to finish prepping the side yard for grass seed. Our site is a former location of the Snoqualmie River and the ice-age glaciers, so it's rock city. I've used a box grader and a landscape rake to grade the site, but that exposes a lot of rocks, which must be removed. The frozen ground makes that very difficult. I'll need to continue grading the site to remove some dips and level it out, undoubtedly uncovering more rocks.

Tomorrow, I'm having cataract surgery on one eye. The second surgery will be two weeks later.

"The Scent of Hope: Innovative Treatment Restores Sense of Smell in Patients With Long COVID"

Like you, Ann, my sense of smell is very weak. I can occasionally smell the coffee, or my wife's cooking, but not very often. I wonder if the treatment mentioned in the referenced article would do anything for us suffering from a poor/nonexistent sense of smell.

Lots to chuckle at lately. In Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lost a vote in Parliament over proposed changes to the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement that would have imposed a carbon tax on Ukraine. Trudeau chose not to blame the carbon tax, but instead blamed … Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans. How US Republicans managed to arrange to vote in the Canadian Parliament was not explained.

Another thing I found funny, in a macabre sort of way, was the story of an unnamed German eco-activist who traveled to the Carpathian Mountains in Poland to protest the impact of forestry on the region. The eco-activist insisted that a particular bear den was empty, the bear having been chased off by logging activities.

But it wasn't empty.

And the bear was more than a little angry.

Plus the bear saw a potential meal in front of it.

The eco-activist was mauled but rescued and it sounds as though he will recover, thankfully. But I am really way past tired of people who pay more attention to their cockamamie theories that to the people who know what's really going on. Local people tell them that bears getting ready to hibernate are easily angered, their theories say that no bear is there. So they believe their theories and not the people who really know what's going on. Pisses me off.

Awakening to Woking

We came for the prolifers, knocked over their literature tables, burned their crisis pregnancy centers and it was OK.
I wasn't an anti-woman, misogynistic bigot
We came for the conservatives, heckled them in class, refused them tenure, wouldn't hire them and it was OK
I wasn't a reactionary, antisemitic, racist, fascist.
We came for the military, refused them promotions, broke their pride and unit strength and it was OK.
I wasn't a white supremacist, militaristic, colonialist lackey
Then we came for the Jews, burned them alive, raped them, kidnapped them
and I was Jew, they came for me.
I looked around
and the the prolifers and the conservatives and the Sixth Fleet were standing with me.

But where are my friends? Where are we?

>>Tomorrow, I'm having cataract surgery on one eye.

I waited about a year too long, but the cataract surgery I had 14 years ago was a miracle. I had another issue with my right eye, but the left eye ended up with the best vision I'd had in more than 50 years. And the dreary yellow world was replaced by, gasp, color. So, good luck!

Unfortunately, I recently knocked out the new lens they put in my left eye back then. Probably a couple of months until I can get it fixed. In the meantime, I can't legally drive, so I'm trying to figure out how I can get up to New Hampshire to winterize before then. And what to do about Christmas in Chicago. Absent a weather apocalypse like last year, I can get a train to Chicago, then somehow get to a hotel in the West Loop, but the family will have to get me to and from the suburban wastelands they inhabit these days. And I'll need to do Uber or Lyft if I want to see any plays, to to museums, etc. I can't see dealing with the CTA in my present condition.

More info on the border crash at Niagara Falls...

Victims in Niagara Falls border bridge crash identified

"NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — The two people killed when their luxury car crashed into a border checkpoint in Niagara Falls and exploded in a fiery wreck were identified Friday as a western New York husband and wife whose family owns a lumber business and several hardware stores in the Buffalo area.

The investigation into what caused the 2022 Bentley Flying Spur to race through an intersection, hit a low median and become airborne Wednesday continued, with investigators looking at whether medical or mechanical issues may have contributed, Niagara Falls Police Chief John Faso told local media.

The car slammed into a row of security booths at the Rainbow Bridge and burst into flames.

Police identified the couple as Kurt P. Villani and Monica Villani, both 53, of Grand Island, a suburb on the Niagara River between Buffalo and Niagara Falls.

Online business records and the company website indicate the victims’ family owns Gui’s Lumber and seven Ace Hardware locations in western New York, his family operating the business since the mid-1980s.

“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all that extended prayers, condolences and well wishes,” the families and the lumber company said in a joint statement released by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office on Friday. “At this point, we are requesting privacy so we may begin the process of healing.
"

Probably not terrorism, but still puzzling. A Flying Spur of that vintage can cost north of $200 Large, but the owners look to have had the resources to buy one. Keeping its speed under control, not so much.

I was starting to watch a "documentary" on Berlin in 1945, when early on there is a scene where the sounds of torture are coming from a work camp, where slave labor is used. In the "documentary" it is claimed that the workers were Ukrainian. I wonder what history books this "fact" came from? Almost certainly, if the story is true, the forced labor was Russian, the German Nazis, like the Ukrainians, viewed the Russians as a little bit sub-human. In fact the Ukrainians were helping the Nazis; for instance, the "Russia-fighting" Ukrainian division that that guy whom the Canadian Parliament gave a standing ovation, was sent to Slovakia to put down a revolt against the Nazis, and did so brutally. The Slovaks are no longer on board with the whole Ukraine project, BTW. The Dutch just voted against it, the only reason that the coalition in Germany won't hold a new election is that they know that they would *all* be thrown out if they did.

I think what happened with the documentary is that when the script came up about the indisputable historical fact that the Nazis used Russian slave labor, the "powers that be" said that this couldn't possibly be allowed to stand, and so substituted "Ukrainians" for "Russians."

They have simply lied to us too much. This is why they want to get rid of X, because their lies are so laughable and can't stand up to the slightest scrutiny, and X is like the little dog pulling away the curtain at the end of the Wizard of Oz. Don't worry though, they would never lie about Trump.

LOL, the AP is days behind X, all of those facts were known the day of the accident. And, oh look, there was already a recall on the Bentley Flying Spur due to a risk of a stuck accelerator. H/T SmallDeadAnimals.com, but I don't know the year of the actual Flying Spur involved.

But you can stick to the AP for your news, if you like. It will probably be half right, and only a few days late. And I am sure there will not be any "stochastic" errors that make the "mistakes" fall to the benefit of one side of the political spectrum. Pravda on the Hudson.

Permit me to ask a question. How would you, a Normie Norm, react to being falsely accused of a crime that brings a potential life/ death sentence? Just grin and bear it? Say, "oh well"? I think not. And this was the just first of many false charges.

Remember when fans of Trump shouted "Lock her up"? And yet Trump was gracious and did not go after her.

The Irish political elite think that would cower the opposition by defining any material contrary to the elite as "violence incitement." It won't. In for a penny, in for a pound.

There's a story about Chinese peasants during one of China's imperial dynasties. A couple of peasants are late for work. The penalty for being late is death. The penalty for rebellion is also death. So, instead of being put to death for being late, they start a peasants rebellion against the emperor. So, political elites, be careful of the laws you impose on your citizens. It could be your heads that are bouncing around the steps of parliament, instead of your speeches.

That sounds like it deals with the problem of smelling bad smells that are not actually in the environment. Fortunately, I don’t have that problem. In fact, I haven’t smelled anything bad in years. Ironically, I would be delighted to smell something awful. I can barely remember what that is like. Anyway, this treatment sounds like it blocks a nerve which makes it seem as though it leaves you with even less of a sense of smell, so I am not at all hopeful that this is about my problem.

I was in the Czech Republic this year and toured a WWII German concentration camp and SS-run prison. Our guide was an elderly Czech lady whose father (blond/blue eyes, non-Jew) was rounded up by the Nazis and sent to western Germany as slave labor, working cleanups of the Allies's bombing runs and also some factory work. He was allowed to return home when he became sick (starved) and unable to work. Our guide, in her 70s, hates Germans and views Russians as a menace. Her daughter, having lived behind the Iron Curtain but not witnessed WWII, only hates Russians.
