Collins says: "Wow, is he irritating. Not many people I can think of who I’d rather have over for dinner less than Donald Trump, but this guy’s one of them."
Stephens responds: "I mentioned last week that he came to my house two summers ago for a pleasant lunch. That was before he got into politics."
Collins says: "He’s very young and rich and I assume he’s figuring on making a name for himself with the right while Trump finishes out his career, in order to turn himself into the neo-Don of the late 2020s."
Then Stephens says something that is completely unfair, as if he is willing to "say anything": "Remember the John Cusack romantic comedy from the 1980s, 'Say Anything?' It could become the slogan for a cohort of ambitious young conservatives whose views are endlessly malleable because their only goal is to advance their personal brand. Ramaswamy, for instance, would probably prefer not to be reminded that in his book he called the Jan. 6 riots 'a disgrace' and a 'stain on our history' that made him 'ashamed of our nation.'"
Let us be honest as Republicans, I’m the only person on the stage who isn’t bought and paid for, so I can say this, the climate change agenda is a hoax. The climate change agenda is a hoax.... And the reality is the anti-carbon agenda is the wet blanket on our economy. And so the reality is more people are dying of bad climate change policies than they are of actual climate change.
At that point the moderator, Bret Baier, brought in Nikki Haley: "Governor Haley, would you like to respond? Are you bought and paid for?"
She said, which Stephens considered moderate, sane, cutting, and sharp:Brett, what I would like to say is the fact that I think this is exactly why Margaret Thatcher said, if you want something said, “Ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.”
That's a prepared joke that doesn't relate to anything. It's also incoherent because all she is doing is saying something.
First of all, we do care about clean air, clean water, we want to see that taken care of. But there’s a right way to do it. And the right way to do it is first of all, yes, is climate change real? Yes it is. But if you want to go and really change the environment, then we need to start telling China and India that they have to lower their emissions. That’s where our problem is. And these green subsidies that Biden has put in, all he’s done is help China because he doesn’t understand all these electric vehicles that he’s done, half of the batteries for electric vehicles are made in China. And so that’s not helping the environment. You’re putting money in China’s pocket and Biden did that. So first of all, I think we need to acknowledge the truth, which is these subsidies are not working. We also need to take on the international world and say, okay, India and China, you’ve got to stop polluting. And that’s when we’ll start to deal with climate.
I don't think that's even a response to Ramaswamy's attack on the whole group. Haley's strategy was to ignore the question, leave other Republicans alone, and attack Biden.
Later in the debate Ramaswamy and Haley do engage over the Ukraine war. It goes like this:
Vivek Ramaswamy: "The reality is that today, Ukraine is not a priority for the United States of America. I think that the same people who took us into the Iraq War, the same people who took us into the Vietnam War, cannot start another no win war. I do not want to get to the point where we’re sending our military resources abroad when we could be better using them here at home to protect our own borders, protect the homeland. That will be my top priority for the policy, to protect this homeland."
Martha Maccallum: "... Governor Haley, you did not raise your hand, meaning that you would support more funding for the Ukraine War. You have said of Governor DeSantis that you didn’t appreciate it when he initially called it a territorial dispute. Why?"
Nikki Haley: "First of all, the American president needs to have moral clarity. They need to know the difference between right and wrong. They need to know the difference between good and evil. When you look at the situation with Russia and Ukraine, here you have a pro-American country that was invaded by a thug. When you want to talk about what has been given to Ukraine, less than 3.5% of our defense budget has been given to Ukraine. If you look at the percentages per GDP, 11 of the European countries have given more than the US. But what’s really important is go back to when China and Russia held hands, shook hands before the Olympics and named themselves unlimited partners. A win for Russia is a win for China. We have to know that. Ukraine is the first line of defense for us. The problem that Vivek doesn’t understand is he wants to hand Ukraine to Russia, he wants to let China eat Taiwan, he wants to go and stop funding Israel. You don’t do that to friends. What you do instead is you have the backs of your friends. Ukraine, it’s a front line of defense. Putin has said once Russia takes Ukraine, Poland and the Baltics are next. That’s a world war. We’re trying to prevent war. Look at what Putin did today. He killed Prigozhin. When I was at the UN, the Russian ambassador suddenly died. This guy is a murderer and you are choosing a murderer over a pro-American country.
Bret Baier: "... Mr. Ramaswamy, you have 30 seconds...."
Vivek Ramaswamy: "I wish you well in your future career on the boards of Lockheed and Raytheon."
Nikki Haley: "I’m not on the board of Lockheed and Raytheon, and you have put down everyone on this stage."
Vivek Ramaswamy: "But you’ve pushing this lie all week. Nikki...."
Nikki Haley: "But you know what? You want to go and defund Israel, you want to give Taiwan to China...."
Vivek Ramaswamy: "Let me address that. I’m glad you brought that up."
Nikki Haley: "You want to go and give Ukraine to Russia."
Vivek Ramaswamy: "I’m going to address each of those right now. This is the false lies of a professional politician. There you have it."
Nikki Haley: "He will America less safe. Under your watch, you will make America less safe. You have no foreign politic experience and it shows. It shows."
Vivek Ramaswamy: "You know what? The foreign policy experience that you have shows in the pointless wars we’ve gotten into. I have to address that. Our relationship with Israel will never be stronger than by the end of my first term. But it’s not client relationship. It’s a friendship. You know what friends do? Friends help each other stand on their own two feet. I will lead Abraham Accords 2.0. I will partner with Israel to make sure Iran never is nuclear armed. But you know what I love about Israel? I’ve been there probably in the last 10 years more than most people on this stage. You know what I love about them? I love their border policies. I love their tough on crime policies. I love that they have a national identity and an iron dome to protect their homeland. So yes, I want to learn from the friends that we’re supporting and what puzzles me-"
Nikki Haley: "No, you want to cut them out of NATO."
Vivek Ramaswamy: "No, I want to learn from those and apply those to protect our homeland, Nikki. That is the answer."
Nikki Haley: "Let me tell you, it’s not that Israel needs America. America needs Israel. They are the front line defense to Iran...."
Ron DeSantis: "Can we move on?"
Bret Baier: "Governor DeSantis, you were mentioned in the territorial dispute, not only-"
Nikki Haley: "No, it’s not a territorial dispute either."

1. Nikki intentionally mispronounced Vivek's first name. It wasn't even close. Super cheap shot.
2. The knives are out for Vivek with all sorts of misrepresentations of his positions. Kow-towing to Putin? The fuck!
Collins and Stephens are just making up shit to slime Vivek. This is what passes for journalism in 2023.
3 Malleable? Vivek has posted his 10 truths. No one else has done that.
4. I saw every single candidate - of both parties - in 2016 and 2020. Vivek got a standing ovation in Treynor, Iowa at a wedding barn venue. I've never seen that before.
"Collins says: "Wow, is he irritating. Not many people I can think of who I’d rather have over for dinner less than Donald Trump, but this guy’s one of them.""
Is this the first "worse than Trump" sighting for Ramaswamy? Congratulations, Vivek, you've reached the big time!
I have been hearing political analysts say that Vivek absolutely came out ahead in the debate. (I also hear them mispronounce his first name, and they only call him by his first name.) Then they go on to say how they liked Nikki Haley's performance better. They liked what she said and didn't like how he made them feel - a feeling that he was winning.
The Telegraph has an article that says Biden team insiders say Haley is the candidate they fear the most. If this really is the info they are getting from Biden insiders, that tells me that Haley is about as fearsome as Mott Romney.
Not many people I can think of who I’d rather have over for dinner less than Donald Trump, but this guy’s one of them.
Is she certain he’d show up if she did invite him? Politicians have to some disgusting things when they’re chasing votes, but I’m sure that there are limits.
It's like accusing supporters of Black Live Matter of support [sic] the looting and burning that accompanied the peaceful protests.
You think they didn’t?!?!?
Vivek has all the right enemies. This is another (of an infinite number) of the examples of leftist bubbles. The lady who could not understand how Nixon could win because she knew no one who would vote for him.
Can somebody please explain to me what Putin has done to us ordinary Americans? I understand that our oligarchs want to divvy up Russia’s estimated $72 trillion dollars in natural resources, but what has Putin done to America? This isn’t a rhetorical question. It just seems like we skip right over it.
I saw Nikki attacking Vivek. She did not look moderate nor sane. The only thing that excited her more was insisting we have to spend endless billions on Ukraine’s flailing half-assed war.
Vivek is a rookie. I’m skeptical of his sincerity.
Haley has zero accomplishments. She has proven herself to be a borrow and spend military adventurist who just so happens to have served on the board of Boeing.
She’s as accomplished as Hillary. Gets paid to give speeches as part of her grift.
She’s a swamp rat
"Collins says: "Wow, is he irritating. Not many people I can think of who I’d rather have over for dinner less than Donald Trump, but this guy’s one of them.""
I wouldn't want Gail Collins, Bret Stephens or any of the lying propagandists any where NEAR me. She can suck eggs. She is clueless.
I've despised Bret Stephens since the day he defended Eason Jordan's scurrilous claim that US soldiers were targeting journalists in Iraq.
NYTimes democrat propaganda. Why bother.
"when it came to her vivisection of Vivek Ramaswamy’s neo-isolationist, Putin-kowtowing foreign policy."
These days, it seems an isolationist is someone who doesn't want to drop bombs on foreigners.
If Vivek were a Democrat, does anyone doubt that Gail Collins would be raving about how wonderful it is to have such a smart, eloquent, and charming young candidate?
Gail prefers to have rich men north of Richmond over for dinner.
By now I've seen those exchanges despite not watching the event and making no particular effort to see them since.
Neither Nikki nor Vivek really demolished the other, IMO; Stephen and Gail fail too.
Oh, my. Vivek -- vivisection! Ain't that clever? Let's all give the lil' lady a big hand, shall we?
I am willing to bet that 90 percent of the WaPo commenters constantly complaining about George Will's thesaurus have no clue what vivisection is. (Yeah, NYT, not WaPo, but same diff, honestly.)
As for "cutting up men," Althouse, was that an intentional Valerie Solanas reference or a fluke?
For an Indian-American gal from South Carolina, she sure does love Israel. Too bad the Althouse quote can't reflect the SCREAMS of delight from the hand-picked GOP crowd. They all LOVED the vicious attacks on Mr. V for not hating Putin enough, not loving Ukraine enough, or kow-towing to Israel enough.
They should have called on Asa Hutchinson, the Bob Jones Graduate. Did you notice the Israeli flag on his lapel? He could probably speak for hours about his LOVE of Israel, and maybe shed a tear or two.
And Mike Pence doesn't really care about domestic crime, unemployment, inflation or illegal aliens or the homeless. That's "Not his concern". His real concern is Ukraine. We need to stop Putin, or we'll be fighting the Russkies in Long Beach. So, unlimted American weapons and money to kill unlimited numbers of Ukrainians and Russians. Because, if we don't, We'll all be speaking Russkie.
This is the GOP when you take out trump. Or people like Mr.V who like Trump. ANd the NYT's loves it.
BTW, I love how Nikki haley says we have to stop the Chicoms from "eating Taiwan". Our official Policy since 1970s is that Taiwan is part of China. But its good to know she'll start WW III Over Taiwan. I guess she can start WW IV over Iran and WW V when Russian invades Georgia. And WW VI when Turkey and Syria get together.
The Ukraine war could have been avoided, but to so required a different kind of diplomacy over the last 33 years from that of the idiots who have been running it the entire time.
The Crimea and the eastern and southern oblasts of Ukraine probably should have been required to hold referenda on whether to remain with Russia proper or become part of the Ukraine on the dissolution of the Soviet Union- those borders were drawn by the Soviet Union at a time that Ukraine was just an SSR, and they should have been redrawn on the collapse of the Soviet government, just like the borders of Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia have been redrawn following the collapse of the Soviet government. A lot of motivation for this invasion by the Russians would have been lanced if the ethnic Russian majority regions had remained with Russia.
Additionally, there was no good reason to expand NATO right up to the Russian border- no good reason at all. It was nothing but a needless provocation. Additionally, we, the US and Europe but mostly the US, have been working overtime to overthrow the pro-Russian governments in Belorussia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Serbia etc. almost from the beginning of the post-Soviet era- these were also needless provocations. Our actions in these matters for 33 years have been extremely foolish and self-damaging.
As for Taiwan and China- I hate to bring the bad news, but we already recognize Taiwan as a part of China, not a separate country, as a matter of long-standing US diplomatic policy. If China invades Taiwan, we would end up fighting China over an internal Chinese dispute given our own fucking past statements.
In other VR news, the Lefties got all hot and bothered when VR said this about Rep Ayanna Pressley:
During his Friday appearance in Iowa, Ramaswamy accused Pressley, the first Black woman elected to represent Massachusetts in Congress, of racism and compared her to “modern grand wizards” of the Ku Klux Klan for comments she made in 2019, saying: “We don’t need any more Black faces that don’t want to be a Black voice.
Hhhhmmm, Rep. Pressley --- "Black faces that don't want to be a Black voice". That sounds a lot like calling someone a "race traitor", doesn't it? And what organization used and uses phrases like "race traitor"? Maybe, the KKK...
Never look for substantive, non-partisan criticism re: any subject matter from the clueless. It may be cutesy, or juvenile and provide cheap chuckles.
But it will never be deep, never be substantive.
This is a link to an article about Nikki Haley and her ties to the defense industry:
https://www.leefang.com/p/nikki-haleys-sudden-wealth-rooted
Now I don’t know how much of this is fact based, but here is something that does appear to be true:
“Haley hauled in $2.3 million from just 11 events in 2022.“ (many sources - quote from Forbes)
Now of course I’m sure this is perfectly legal and and Nikki Haley seems to be one of the more honest politicos. But 11 speeches - 2.3 million dollars? Rich men north of Richmond indeed.
"Such violent imagery from Bret Stephens"
They really do despise their enemies, don't they?
"Collins says: "Wow, is he irritating. Not many people I can think of who I’d rather have over for dinner less than Donald Trump, but this guy’s one of them."
I bet the feeling is mutual.
"Why so mean?"
Progs doing the prog thing, against a target that must be destroyed.
"I know why. The rules change when the target of hostility is perceived as right wing"
Exactly. Vivek is the wrong kind of POC, therefore actually more dangerous, therefore more in need of vilification.
"Then Stephens says something that is completely unfair"
OK, I appreciate the observation, but really, do these swamp creatures ever treat their enemies fairly? Which NYT columnist, to stick just with that in-crowd, does?
"Please, political commentators, check your assumptions with an analogy that flips left and right."
Now that's funny.
"She said, which Stephens considered moderate, sane, cutting, and sharp: Brett, what I would like to say is the fact that I think this is exactly why Margaret Thatcher said, if you want something said, “Ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.”
OMFG. Isn't that disqualifying BS all by itself?
"Vivek Ramaswamy: "The reality is that today, Ukraine is not a priority for the United States of America."
Right. Why should it be? And if it is, at what cost, for what purpose?
"less than 3.5% of our defense budget has been given to Ukraine"
Pretty sure that's a lie.
"he wants to hand Ukraine to Russia, he wants to let China eat Taiwan"
Jeez, stop it lady.
"Vivek Ramaswamy: "I wish you well in your future career on the boards of Lockheed and Raytheon."
Good line.
"Nikki Haley: "No, you want to cut them out of NATO.""
WTF? Israel? Ukraine?
Anyone worried about what Nikki Haley does for a living, now that she's not the Governor?
She's doing OK.
Nikki is a hack for the military-industrial complex.
Gail and Brett Stephens are irritating. Fuck'em.
"We Times readers are expected to love that chance to feel we are seated alongside these wits."
Added together, they make one wit.
Bret Bug is being a good little Quisling for his NY Times masters. Maybe he will get an extra doggie treat this week!
The Peter Thiel connection makes a lot of sense given some of the other names associated with pumping up this guys candidacy. However, I'm highly skeptical of the biotech hype-man's chances as a national candidate, especially in a GOP primary. e.g. demographic skews older, white evangelicals only vote for white evangelicals (the lone exception being Trump 2024 -- although it's noteworthy that Trump lost this vote in 2016 in the primary). White evangelicals are about 30% of the GOP. Biotech hype-man will never be able to recreate the Trump coalition, which is 50%+ of the GOP right now. This guy's lane is a sliver of the GOP base -- 40 and under, very online, socially conservative atheists and perhaps some right-wing Catholics, plus some right-wing, 40 to 55 year old Silicon Valley types. A very vocal 10% to 15% of the GOP these days.
The defense contractors aren’t stupid- they know to angle for Democrats on their boards…
It's KKK analogies for me (Dems), but not for thee. (whatever your name is)
Ramaswamy is pulling a Trump.
Watch a barrage of clips with Dems comparing Republicans to KKK, Nazis, and every other despicable name in the book. Those are being compiled right now. It may take a while to find a 'best of' because of the sheer volume.
people have been telling me, for more than a year now;
that it is "IMPERATIVE" that we help The Ukraine defeat Russia.
and for more than a year now, i've been asking; so, what do we DO when The Ukraine LOSES??
And most just act like they don't even hear. Some say; "Ha! That's NOT going to happen!! The Ukraine WILL win, because They Are Heroes!!!
All of which makes ME think: so, what WILL we DO when The Ukraine LOSES??
Anyone? What then? What's Plan B?
Memo:
Must destroy Ramaswamy.
He could be Trump's running mate.
A person I knew from Journalism school apparently worked with / knew Bret Stephens when he was the up-and-coming young whippersnapper of the WSJ editorial pages. She kept calling him "The Rodent," and went on about how loathsome and oily he was: apparently the kind of person who is a wide-eyed suck-up to everyone higher in the hierarchy and a disdainful jerk to everyone lower. Then he moved to the New York Times, and she was briefly horrified. But now this same person is re-tweeting his work with positive emojis.
I'm not 100% sure how to read this because I can't decide who is likely a worse person. Given the demonstrated unreliability of my source, I should ignore the stories about Stephens, but I can't unsee "The Rodent" and suck-up quality in him now that is has been pointed out.
I love all those idiots on stage calling Mr. V an "amatuer" who "Knows nothing about foriegn policy".
This from Governor of a small Southern State, who spent a grand total of 2 years at the worthless job of "UN ambassador". Then we got Christie, a NJ Governor. Bumstead and Hutchinson, two other small state governors. And finally, Pence, the Indiana Governor who hung around the Oval office for 4 years, working on Covid, and hoping Trump would give him something to do.
In reality, none of these clowns know anymore about foreign policy than Mr. V. Their Foreign policy views are just standard hack NYTs reading Neo-con. Probably all of them were given "talking points" by some big Donor.
Final point. I'm just shocked at how bad DeSantis did. He had this debate for the asking. All he had to do was push Trumpism. "Hello, I'm Ron. I can do Trump's policies but without being Trump".
But he muffed every chance. And kept ducking the issues and saying we should "Move on". He could've slapped down NeoCon Nikki, and gave us the Trump position on Ukraine. But no, it was just "Hey, lets move on". Same thing with Trump being prosecuted by the Leftwing Junata, DeSantis could've attacked Biden's stalinist DoJ hard, claimed he would support Trump 100 percent. But no, he wimped out. He RELUCTANTLY raised his hand, then jabbered about "moving on".
This guy is the NO. 1 alternative to trump, and it was hard to remmeber what he did or said. Was he even there? He needs to up his game, or he will be OUT.
Don't these NY Times people realize they were watching a debate not a dinner party? Debates are supposed to have challenging conversation. So, yeah, in the context of a dinner party it would be irritating. Having said that, talking in a debate as if you are in a dinner party would be equally irritating. That's the problem with these DC lifers. They get too comfortable in that town.
Vivek reminds me of Newt Gingrich, in a positive way. He is very bright and has a good grasp of issues that most politicians just look at their talking notes to address.
He must be destroyed ASAP because he is a threat to the dullards who run the political establishment.
It is much worse that he has his own money and does have to grift off the system.
Dear God, even the zinger about "Say Anything" is idiotic. The title of the movie comes in a line from the girl's father, who assures her that she can "say anything" to him. Cusack's character offers her that same sort of close relationship, so she chooses him despite his lack of traditional status markers for her class. (Of course, he also looks like John Cusack, so there's that.) There's a bunch of other plot points. It's an emotionally complex movie, that is not at all about "saying anything to get ahead". Yeesh.
Although Vivek R. is dark skinned, I'm not sure he is a BIPOC (person of color). He is a Caucasian like many people is southern Asia and most people in the USA.
I do not understand this at all. Who is Ms Haley referencing?: "Nikki Haley: "No, you want to cut them out of NATO." I thought the topic was Israel, maybe while glancing at Ukraine. So what does NATO have to do with anything? Also, to the comment saying Mr Ramaswamy has no chance in the GOP primary because it skews to "older, white evangelical" voters . . . well, I am an elderly (76) white evangelical, with rural background now living in a small SW Missouri town, and I will happily vote for Mr Ramaswamy . . . for VP when Donald Trump is elected president and then in 2028 for POTUS.
Help me understand why we are not celebrating Asians running for president. This is really something! It's something to celebrate!
Obama got a lot of excitement for being black. Hillary for being a woman. But Asian! This is a big deal! Why is it not mentioned how hugely important this is to America?
Did DeSantis really say, "Can we move on?"
Hahaha. I missed that during the debate. Nikki, who was about to jump podiums and start slapping Vivek, had the room's attention. All of her Thatcher cool didn't last long.
If DeSantis were meme savvy he'd clip that moment.
He RELUCTANTLY raised his hand, then jabbered about "moving on".
Yeah that was surprising to me. Everyone (even the audience) knew that question was coming in some form. Yet only Vivek seemed prepared for it.
The correct answer was to attack the media. Not to wiffle waffle and look over everyone's shoulder to see the correct answer from your classmates. Everyone on that stage pledged to support the eventual nominee. So it was a stupid question in line of when did you stop beating your wife.
Stephens responds: "I mentioned last week that he came to my house two summers ago for a pleasant lunch. That was before he got into politics."
Wait, what? Before he got into politics? Dude, you are a political opinion columnist. Billionaires don't have lunch at your house unless they are in politics. It may be before he announced his candidacy but he was definitely in politics if he was having lunch with you.
Nikki Haley -- amalgam of two of the most vapid women's names -- is no more entitled to invoke Margaret Thatcher than Joe Biden was to steal from Neil Kinnock.
To understand the depth of Biden's dishonesty, and how even the MSM was disgusted by it in 1988, watch this mind-boggling talking-head montage from the 1987 campaign. Elinor Cliff looks so young! And she denounces and dismisses Biden as a fraud. But it's not just her. Sam Donaldson and many other network journalists are gobsmacked by Biden's long career of lying. It's a good measure of how far the media has fallen.
This would never happen today. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T4J9db3V8Ag
So the main news here is that De Santis has managed to completely fail in his bid. For anybody who has heard him talk that shouldn’t come as a surprise. What surprises me is that for a long time everyone in the media has hitched on the DeSantis bandwagon. Yet, when put to the test it imploded -- spectacularly....
I can't and won't claim credit for this, because I saw it in a meme posting elsewhere, but apropos "Nikki's" comment:
"She said, which Stephens considered moderate, sane, cutting, and sharp: Brett, what I would like to say is the fact that I think this is exactly why Margaret Thatcher said, if you want something said, “Ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.”
Vivek should have retorted, "Go make me a sandwich."

Harvard undergrad, Yale Law School, Goldman Sachs & Tech bro. It’s hilarious that Vivek Ramaswamy thinks he’s an outsider and not a member of the elite himself. One of the laughable tragedies about this crop of GOP presidential also-rans is that they all still believe that they're still the outsiders they were, decades ago—you know, before politics became a batsh*t crazy spectacle, and they started to look a lot like the people they once disrupted.
"All of which makes ME think: so, what WILL we DO when The Ukraine LOSES??
Anyone? What then? What's Plan B?"
Plan A was mirror-world Vietnam. Use Ukraine (North Vietnam and Vietcong) to bleed the Russian (US) military. It's succeeding admirably. Why worry about Plan B?
That's the realpolitik version.
As a non-realpolitik bonus, we're opposing an autocrat's unjustified invasion of a sovereign nation in opposing to his nation's guarantee (in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum) of security. Our actions are in support of that same agreement.
It’s hilarious that Vivek Ramaswamy thinks he’s an outsider and not a member of the elite himself
Wait a minute. Did the talking points update and I didn't get the memo? During the debate they were talking about how he was stupid and unconnected and didn't know anything and too much of an "outsider".
Now that you realize an outsider is what people are looking for you're going to attack him for Harvard, Yale, and GS?
I'm going to get whiplash.
You know who Ramaswamy reminds me of? The great frauds of the 2000 teens, Billy Mcfarland, Elizabeth Holmes, Martin Shrekli, and others.
@ Brian:
Populism has given ‘the elites’ more power than ever. There is a misconception that everyone who rails against the ‘elite’ is against hierarchy in general, when in practice they just hate the current rulers. Particularly on the right the problem is generally who is in charge, not that someone is.
We are the ones being bled, Germany even more. You do understand that during wartime, your newspapers lie to you about the progress of a war, right?
“You know who Ramaswamy reminds me of? The great frauds of the 2000 teens, Billy Mcfarland, Elizabeth Holmes, Martin Shrekli, and others.”
Indeed! I wonder why the right seems to fall prey to these sorts of people. Trump is one too. Fakers and frauds.
One of the most disturbing "saying the quiet parts out loud" I have ever experienced was Haley talking about using other countries as America's "first line of defense." She said the same thing about Ukraine.
We are fighting proxy wars against our enemies using our allies' sons and daughters as our human shields. And, when all the Ukrainian men are dead? Then what? Is that when we talk about diplomacy or will we pick some other country to be America's second line of defense?
What a fucked up situation when the person who demands diplomacy is "crazy" and the sanity means sending cluster bombs to kill innocent children in 20 years when the unexploded ordinance finally goes "boom." I'm on Team Crazy.
And, where is the pathetic anti-war left on this issue?
"And where is the pathetic anti-war left on this issue."
There are some honest left critics of our foreign policy, but a Movement actually takes deep pockets. There will be a resurgence of "'Anti-war' (but really on the other side)" sentiment if and when a Republican assumes the presidency and not a moment before.
