"Don't have anyone write your speeches and don't use a teleprompter. I'll make that commitment. Why doesn't the whole field make that commitment?"

Because some candidates won't have an opinion until polling tells them what it should be.

Vivek's playing the long game. This is a strategy that will harm Biden more than it will any GOP contender.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

That would be awesome to see. Cull the field based on politicians' ability to think!

Kai Akker म्हणाले...

I am quick, verbally, so I will try to make everyone else be compared to my strength.

"Why doesn't the whole field make that commitment?"

1. Barry showed that reading a teleprompter can make you an orator.
2. Effective performance in debate makes no difference in elections or as prez.
2. Most pols are slow-witted, know little, and can't think on their feet.
4. Not everyone has Trump's stand-up skills.

In a more rational world, and in the political systems of many allies, coherent, vigorous, adversarial speech would be tremendous skill. Not here.

Oh God, no. Please don't make Vivek Ramaswamy the next Althouse favorite.

Because the job is not about riffing about stuff on the spot. Diplomacy isn't improv, the President doesn't spend his days chatting at State Fairs.

I have come to the conclusion that memorizing a speech is apparently a kind of superpower that few people have. Extemporaneous speech that is coherent is an even greater superpower.

Let's just agree that Ramaswamy is much smarter than most people.

I'm sure he will be an outspoken supporter in any role he assumes.

But

I am liking vivek more and more. If our president emeritus winds up not running he seems like he might be an acceptable alternative.

Looking forward to seeing him in the debate.

Not to interrupt the sudden love fest for this guy, but maybe it would be wise to learn a whole lot more about him and what he really believes before jumping in much further. Yes, he sounds intelligent and a refreshing change from the usual political buffoons, but exactly who is he, and how did he just jump in out of nowhere to declare he wants to be President of the United States? This isn't speed-dating. Do some serious vetting.

So be more like Trump. Got it.

Dave Begley म्हणाले...

And he can do it.

At the last event, he had posted behind him 10 truths or principles of his campaign. He rattled them off without turning around.

He can speak in perfect paragraphs and speak flawlessly for hours.

This is just one of his talents.

What's the point of repeating out loud what everyone can read for themselves? IMO that's worse than reading from a teleprompter.

H म्हणाले...

One thing that makes Vivek able to answer impromptu questions and sound intelligent is that he has an overall political/philosophical framework through which to view the questions. So: “I don’t have a problem with same sex couples, but I have a problem with the tyranny of the minority.” Other politicians hear LGBTQ++ and think, “What is the canned answer that we agreed on for addressing this issue?” and the other politicians end up sounding phony or confused. Vivek sounds like, “I’ve been thinking a lot about what causes the lack of civility in our public discourse, and I’ve hit upon tyranny of the minority as one of those causes, and this provides an excellent example."

Lawcruiter म्हणाले...

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

One of the dangers of speaking extemporaneously, if you are a curious person like me, you may follow a thought (while speaking) marveled by how shiny it is or whatever, and, once the thought is extinguished, like a fireworks, the need to continue speaking, because it’s not a conversation, could devolved into rambling. I’ve seen it countless times at AA meetings.

You gotta be a highly trained orator/speaker to avoid that pitfall. Maybe Ramenswamy is.

I used to think this way. Then I saw the US survive 8 years of Obama, and a couple of years of Biden, and I think, how much worse could he be? It'd be different at least, and who knows, he could pull it off. I am a huge fan of what Trump did as president and is trying to do. But he's too old. It's that simple.

I haven't seen anything better than Vivek out there yet.

He's an intelligent, eloquent defender of our Constitution. A highly successful creator of value in our economy. However, not being a politician, currently, is, in my opinion, the best reason to vote for him.

Would we have been better off had Mittens won in 2012? No, he might have slowed the handcart to Hell or improved the beverage service but we would have still been in the same handcart with the same destination. It is why I supported Obama in 12.

I felt much the same way in 08 until McCain nominated Sarah Palin and she said she intended to be an activist president (of the Senate) I thought this was a hopeful sign.

Anyone who has read me here over the past 15 years knows that I am about as far from a Bolshevik as it is possible to be. I am a liberal (classical liberal, libertarian, minarchist. Whatever) But Lenin did get one thing right and it is still a motto to live by today.

"Worse is better"

As the alcholic or other drug addict won't rehabilitate until the truly reach bottom, so with the US. I thought we had under Obama, which is why I supported. He did get us Donald Trump.

Perhaps we have not really reached bottom. Perhaps we have not really reached the point where the American people say "ENOUGH!!!" and vote out all incumbents and start fresh. We need a new American Revolution. A peaceful one before we wind up with a non-peaceful one.

Perhaps we need another 4 years of Biden or, even better (worse) Kamala.

So who do you see as a good Repo president? Desantis? Christie? Sunnunu? Haley?

Would any of them be any better than Biden at getting the country back on track? (That is to say, all are useless)

I don't think Vivek can either. I think he is the only one who might (might) be willing to try. That is why I might (maybe) support him if our President Emeritus is not in the race.

If you know little to nothing about him, it is not due to a lack of info.

Some of us can do two things at once.

Even so, it's irrelevant. I've no problem with agreeing to what he is saying here, regardless of his position on any political spectrum.

It seems some of the notable leftist commenters here like to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Vivek is very well spoken in a real, not phony politician way. I watched his interview with Jordan Peterson and was much impressed. I don't think he could make it now but as Trump's VP, maybe a good start. But you say, "Isn't Trump a loser?" He may lose, especially if fraud rules again , but he will be a hero if History is still written a few years from now. Vivek could be in position to pick up a lot of Trump voters.

I think the country is headed for big trouble soon. An economic crash or a lost war. Somebody will have to pick up the pieces of what is left. The dead Republican Party might be revived by somebody like Vivek.

MikeR म्हणाले...

While it is a useful skill for life to be able to speak extemporaneously and quickly, I think other skills are valuable too. I always write out my speeches completely to the last word. I don't read from the paper, but I want it available and that way I can make sure it says exactly the way I want it said.

Breezy म्हणाले...

I (and many others) predict Biden won’t be the nominee on the D side. His own team, which previously supported him, has severe angst about him. All other D names would be bigger losers than Biden would be.

Vivek is awesome. Love his communication skills, his values, and his honesty. Also that he is completely comfortable in who he is and what he believes. He’s America First 2.0. Only thing that worries me is how the swamp could get to him before he gets to it. He’s got a bigger learning curve than Trump. We’ve seen how utterly ruthless things can get.

Presidents should spend their time on the really important stuff and ruthlessly DELEGATE everything else. Even then they’ll get sucked into things like visiting sites of national disasters where they can do nothing except show their “empathy”. There’s lots of gals out there who are better speechwriters thanVivek, especially if that’s all they have to do.

Tim म्हणाले...

The transcripts of the Lincoln-Douglas debates make for a very depressing read, but they're an example of why the ability to speak coherently and without a script is important. Can you understand and respond to questions--from the press, from the public, from someone in Congress--in a way that they can understand? If you can, it demonstrates both respect for your interlocutor and clear, possibly even principled thinking. Neither is common among the people we typically elect.
Lincoln's prepared speeches were masterpieces, often enough, but when you're dealing with your peers, subordinates, or rivals, you don't generally have the luxury of preparing your answers in advance.

So what are Vivek's core views? Sorry, but I'm still reminded of the bait and switch played by a national, Koch-funded coalition of legislators that ran many pages long and talked about every subject under the sun except the very things voters cared about most: job threats due to legal and illegal immigration, lowering crime, and the the peso losing drug crisis.

Don't let oratory and show-off pledges get in the way of policy priorities and policy pledges. Also, you dance with who brung you. Vivek, much like Ted Cruz, seems like a good guy, but like Cruz, he needs deep pockets to advance, and the deep pockets he kneels to will tell you everything you need to know about what he will actually do.

And deep pockets aren't just money. They are the offer of crucial media and Party support, campaign exposure, and ground-game organization that comes with fealty to those pockets. Just ask Marco! Pinocchio of the Gang of Eight.
