A highly approved-of comment on the NYT article "Why Does Day Drinking Feel Different? A buzz in the sun can hit harder than dinnertime drinks. Experts shed light on the science."
I'm not quoting this because I approve. I thought "day drinking" seems different because in the daytime, you're supposed to be productive and so you shouldn't be undermining your mental and physical capacities. And also, someone who drinks in the day is presumably someone who drinks in the evening too. You're getting an early start — or you just never really stop — so it looks like you have a problem. But here's the NYT coming to help you feel good about it and not stigmatized. Why? I'm thinking the NYT has a lot of alcohol advertisers, and I'll bet it can see that articles on the happier side of alcohol consumption attract readers. Still, it's almost evil to prompt us to go ahead and begin our drinking earlier in the day.
ADDED: The article isn't promoting day drinking. It goes through the science, showing why it can be more of a problem and how you can manage the various problems (like dehydration). And it begins with a sunny tone — "A poolside margarita, a frosty beer at a Memorial Day barbecue — summer, you could argue, is made for a cold drink on a hot day" — and it's the comments section that's grabbing onto the the positive elements.

The establishment's new position is that "fat, drunk and stupid" is the way to go through life, son.
Have you had a checkup with your doctor lately? They are pushing reduction of alcohol intake hard. I guess NYT has not gotten the word.
During my career as a quack lawyer, I have never once engaged in day drinking.
Beer,the fun breakfast drink.
"Have you had a checkup with your doctor lately? They are pushing reduction of alcohol intake hard."
Good! Personally, I have had a checkup recently, but I didn't get any of this hard pushing. Not applicable.
Literal textbook psychopaths hold the majority of management positions across government and private industry today. They'll do anything for $$$$$.
Promote day drinking and alcoholism. Great.
Promote child sex and body mutilation? Great.
Characterize debate as grounds for imprisonment. Great.
Wasn't the 2 martini lunch a icon of the swingin' mid-20th century?
Very NYT to take a behavior that the writer probably does not engage in, and make a bunch of faux scientific statements about it. A total fluff piece. It does bring back a memory from 1982 or so in New York when I was a high school teacher at a Catholic school in New York. It was winter, and one morning I showed up and the furnance had broken, so no school. The teachers all decided to go out to breakfast, but one colleague pulled me to one side and suggested we go a bar instead. I was surprised when we went inside the bar (25th and Third Avenue os somewhere nearby) and it was pretty active. Apparently drinking in the morning was not so unusual in New York at that time. Anyway, long story short, one of the more memorable drinking sessions that I recall from that time.
Everybody used to day drink all the time. The extended lunch cocktail was a 70's staple. A hundred years before that people only drank alcohol as water wasn't purified.
I'll like any article that pushes back against the New Puritanism.
Now do the unique buzz of "Afternoon Delight," as described by the Starland Vocal Band.
What Enigma said.
Day drinking lifestyle slots nicely in the spaces between their luxury goods and travel and anti-capitalism and global warming stories.
I do love their hand-drawn ads from the Fifties to the Seventies. Look up any old article and choose the original page view.
day drinking IS fun.. Ball games, picnics, lounging at the beach.. What a way, to Waste a day!
Getting Wasted is FUN!!!
but, speaking from personal experience.. The BEST drinking.. is MORNING drinking!
Especially, when you're Still Drunk from the night before!!!
Tie One On!!! oh! and don't forget your recreational drugs They're GREAT!!!
Let's Get Wasted!!!
you have NOTHING to Lose, except; Everything
I suspect it is justification if a popular coping mechanism for Times readers. They don’t call it Mom Water for nothing…
My Mom(91) &I get together w/another Mother/daughter duo plus 2more to play cards &catch a buzz before lunch. I’m a 2glass wonder: I’m actually a 1glass wonder, but 2keeps it spinning until the food splashes the buzz like cold water.
We have so much fun catching up &laughing. It’s a once a month thing, but it’s been difficult to find a day when we can all get together. We host between the Moms’ houses. We play 5Crowns.
I’d drink Crown, but it’s a wine day.
Daydrinking might hit harder because you're more likely to be dehydrated during the day vs. at night. I'll never know. I hardly do nightdrinking, let alone during the day. Exception: Gin and Tonics during the summer! I've had about 4 this summer.
Can confirm.
"someone who drinks in the day is presumably someone who drinks in the evening too."
Not necessarily. The cutesy name suggests that these are women having two glasses of wine at book club. They go home, tell their husbands to order pizza for the kids, and they go to bed.
First day of pharmacology we learned that ethanol (like most drugs) is a poison that may have beneficial side effects.
I leave for vacation in Mexico on Monday. You better believe I'll be day drinking all week.
Bars in Milwaukee would open early for third shift factory workers getting off their shift. I don’t know if this is still true.
Sometimes I day drink beer. But because of my metabolism I take three days to drink one bottle. I do this maybe once every couple of months when I’m really thirsty for a beer.
Nothing says “fuck my life” quite like day drinking.
Years ago, we lived in a place where it was easy to get out on the water, easy to get away within a few minutes to a quiet place. We had a speedboat, and on weekends we'd stick it in the water, load up, and make a run about 30 minutes from town to a couple of bays on uninhabited islands - sheltered water, nice saltwater bathing, little tiny beach. After getting anchored up, I'd crack a cold one, maybe 10:00 in the morning, read the paper, soak in the rays, let the kids swim and frolic, let the boat rock me to a calm place. Then I'd fire up the barbie (it sat in one of the rod holders) and we'd have something to eat off the grill.
Man, I can tell you, after a hard 14-hour day, 6-day week, I fully endorse day drinking, but not necessarily for the buzz. This was my reset, I could feel the stress running off me like snowmelt. Great times.
I’m definitely not any-capitalist, but I do live at a beach and fish a whole lot. I often bring (4) 16” beers. If I drink all four, even over 6 hours or so, I feel it at a level I just don’t remember. Two mangrove snappers this morning.

no offense BUT If your drinking session is memorable and you can recall it; You are doing it wrong!
NYT raison d'être; I'm OK, You're OK, even if you day drink or molest kids. It's those teetotal, family oriented church people in Tennessee that are the real problem.
Milwaukee Democrat douchebag State Senator Chris Larson recently tweeted (ignoring Milwaukee's Crack, Heroine, and Fentanyl problem)....
"WI's drinking culture is out of control. According to the most recent UW Pop. Health Institute ratings, Wisconsin is the drunkest state in the U.S. with over one-quarter of adults reporting excessive drinking. We are also home to 7 of the 10 drunkest cities and 10 of the top 20."
For WI being the drunkest state in the nation is a point of pride. A tradition of our ancestors. It's the way of our people. But like all Democrats, Larson ignores the problem in his own backyard, destroying his city. In Milwaukee you can get crack, heroine, and fentanyl delivered to your door faster than Uber Eats can deliver you a burger. Madison, WI ignores this problem as well...like they ignore all of Milwaukee's problems.
Drink beer. Legalize pot. Go after the crack, heroine, and fentanyl dealers hard. But Milwaukee won't do that. Neither will Philly, SF, and other Democrat run metropolitan areas that are rapidly deteriorating.
With all the college educated white women here in Wisconsin wrecking our once great state...a good stiff Brady Old Fashioned in needed in the afternoon.

"Well I woke up Sunday morning, with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast, wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert".
I just recently read Lost Weekend, and boy talk about yer day drinking! I was never THAT bad. In fact I didn't like to start before the cocktail hour, usually 4 pm.
Anyway I was afraid the book would have some preachy AA ending but no, he's still hiding bottles in the toilet tank and out the window at the end. Lol.
The book probably made too many people feel comparatively sober.
KRIS!! Not enough people remember one of our best songwriters.
Oh- ps: I don’t drink often. I would if I wasn’t so scared of the alcoholism in my families- both sides.
And if I thought the cost was justified. And if I was comfortable w/a buzz in daily life…

I have nothing against day drinking, especially now that I'm retired. But I don't drink before I walk the dog and go for my bike ride so I'm usually waiting until the traditional start of happy hour anyway. Besides, living in a northern clime, the sun doesn't set until, checks phone ...8:30, so summer day drinking is a near necessity. The poor slobs in Duluth would have to wait until almost 9PM.
Hooky bad.
Snow day good!

In Des Moines, by the tire factories, the strip joints used to open at 7am* on friday morning (payday).
Until you've been drinking all Thursday night, and at dawn driven drunk down to Des Moines to watch strippers; you Haven't experienced wasted days and wasted nights like gilbar used to.
This was all back in the 20th century.. I don't think many of the tire factories are even there now.
the strip joints used to open at 7am* Fond memories** of sitting at the bar, and watching the girls trod in..
Bedraggled and forlorn looking, as they would go into their dressing room to get ready.
10 minutes later, they come bouncing out; Bright eyed and Bushy tailed.. Full of enthusiasm.
I guessing it was their coffee?? (i'm SURE, it was NOT their coffee)
Fond memories** obviously didn't have as much fun as i could have!

Sad that some of your commenters need this to understand your posts.
As for day drinking; I'm a sleepy drunk. Much of the reason I don't drink is it just makes me tired, and if I start early, then it just ruins the day. It is not just a lack of production, but missing out on the fun of not being tired by mid-day. Yet on vacation, I'll still enjoy a nice drink by the beach. I can always get a nap in early and wake up to a fun evening.
If you are going to drink in the day, drink smirnoff vodka (lllinois finest!)
It "takes your breath away" and "leaves you breathless"
This leaves people thinking you are just stupid, not drunk.

Or drink Hennigan's

I only did day drinking on weekends. I _almost_ never drank at work. That's because a therapist tagged me as a "functional alcoholic". When I was between marriages, I would day drink on vacation. Most of the day drinking examples I've heard deal with people sneaking drinks at work or when they are not supposed to be drinking (moms driving their kids around), not the fun day drinking as some have described here in the comments. Day drinking can be fun if done with care. I have nothing against it. I (that's an emphasized "I") just can't day drink. Or drink any time. Because I have no idea of what I might do. I fear that if I ever drank again, my impaired judgement would lead me to drunk driving (again) and I would kill someone.
I live about a mile from The Square Grouper, where "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" was partially filmed. Jupiter has been known as "A small drinking town with a fishing problem." I don't own a boat, but I used to go out drift fishing with a six-pack, a sub from a local Italian deli and really didn't care if I caught anything.

I'm not a drinker, so perhaps I'm less caring about alcohol and its ill effects on many people than I should be. Certainly, I've seen it cause great harm to people I knew and loved, while my partner over the last decade freed herself from alcohol dependency more than 30 years ago. She wouldn't be so blasé concerning the subject.
But, nonetheless, I thought I'd share a couple of Winston Churchill quotes on this topic. For instance:
1. “When I was younger I made it a rule never to take strong drink before lunch. It is now my rule never to do so before breakfast.”
(Reply to King George VI, on a cold morning at the airport. The King had asked if Churchill would take something to warm himself.)
2. “As I was the host at luncheon I raised the matter at once, and said to the interpreter that if it was the religion of His Majesty [Ibn Saud] to deprive himself of smoking and alcohol I must point out that my rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after, and if need be during all meals and in the intervals between them.
“The King graciously accepted the position. His own cup-bearer from Mecca offered me a cup from its sacred well, the most delicious I had ever tasted.”
"Anybody can be a non-drunk. It takes a special talent to be a drunk. It takes endurance. Endurance is more important than truth." - Mickey Rourke - Barfly - 1987
I heard someone use this term a few months ago and thought it was weird. About the only drinking I do anymore is while the sun is up, i.e., later afternoon (3:30) after running or swimming or biking, then nothing the rest of the night.
As someone else said, it used to be common. Except Wine Moms are apparently A Thing lately.
So again the NY Times wallows in denouncing a common activity of its readers, but for once, the commenters don't buy it and fall into lockstep agreement? When you've lost the comment section of the NY Times, you've lost everything.
I've switched regular beers because I need low carbs. My new beer is low carb, actually tastes good, and is lower alcohol (4%) to boot. But the name amuses me: Day Time.
"Hey, it’s 5AM somewhere!"
After an all nighter at the telescope, you need a finishing beer to cap a great night. Learned that from my Auusie observing mates.
I never (hardly ever) drink after 5:00 PM or before 1:00 PM unless I'm on vacation. On vacation I start drinking in the AM and stop some time in the PM.
"But here's the NYT coming to help you feel good about it and not stigmatized."
The goal of the NYT is to keep it's readers fat, drunk and stupid.
Try full blown alcoholism. That takes the fun right out of day drinking. I'm a tea totaler who has an occasional opium tea. Plus the poppies are gorgeous flowers!
Alcohol is the worst of all drugs. Highly addictive, destroys the abuser, and does it slowly, lulling the drinker into a false sense of control.
It is the devil.

Old and Slow, now that's something I want to try.
Legalize opium!
Every time they crack down on something the problem just gets worse.
Alcohol is like any drug. It’s good for you until you overdose and become addicted to overdosing. Then you have lost your free will to a demon that hates you and wants you dead.
No, its usual "Let me wag my finger at you" NYTs health article. I'm assuming its directed at the NYT readership that mostly consists of well-to-do older people, who have the time and the money to sit by the Pool and drink all day, or go out to lunch and have a few dry white wine.
Many German workplaces serve beer at lunchtime with no ill effects. Amd the twp martini lunch used to be standard in the USA. Drinking before lUnch is a warning sign though. Even Hemingway didn't do it.
Personally, I've found drinking too much on vacation during the Afternoon is bad news. A few drinks is OK before 6 PM, but too much and I've thrown away the whole PM. So, I limit myself to a few glasses of wine at Lunch.
Anyway, the NTY's hasn't even called "Day Drinking" by its correct name. Its called "Fishing"
"Nobody minds a man having a morning eye-opener, and it's OK to have a bracer about 10am and a couple of drinks before lunch. A few beers on a hot afternoon keep a man healthy, or at least happy. And of course everyone drinks at cocktail hour. A man can't be criticized for having wine with his dinner, a liqueur afterwards, and a highball or two during the evening.
But this business of sip, sip, sip all day long has got to stop!"
For myself, even when I drank a lot I seldom drank during the day. One beer at a cookout or picnic and I'm done for the day.
Nowadays my wife might have a scotch during the afternoon but I'm not tempted. Day sex is more my thing.
Well, it's Saturday morning, so this seems appropriate for the thread:
