Said Dave Chappelle, as quoted in
"'What the f—k happened to this place?': Dave Chappelle rails on San Francisco at surprise show
SFGATE culture editor Dan Gentile saw the controversial comedian's last-minute San Francisco set" (SFGate).
He told a story about eating at an Indian restaurant in the Tenderloin a few nights earlier, only to have someone defecate in front of the restaurant as he was walking in. San Francisco has become “half ‘Glee,’ half zombie movie,” he said, and he remarked that the whole city is the Tenderloin now. “Y’all [N-words] need a Batman!” he exclaimed.
He wasn’t aware of the incident of a business owner hosing down a homeless person and had to have the crowd explain it. He pivoted quickly, saying he now remembered watching the video on YouTube … a hundred times. The misdirection was followed by a cruel snicker and a trademark slap of the mic against his thigh....

Good thing Dave is only 'controversial', not 'ever-controversial'
There is hope for his salvation.
I’m walking around Boston this morning- the sidewalks have 1/4 the people they once had for a Monday and the mix is different - Chinese tourists, a school group or two going to BPL…surprisingly not the usual addict scene outside the library entrance- only one guy looking a bit lost like his buddies didn’t tell him where they were going…
9/10 of the retail in Copley Plaza have their doors locked but the lights on and they are full of merchandise. Some are staffed some not. Nobody comes to the door when a shopper tries to go in…
Unlike Chappelle I know what the f—k happened to this place…
The Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union is in San Francisco this December after a 4-year hiatus. (I think the Moscone center was being rehabbed?) I'm very curious to hear the reactions of the multitudes who descend on how things are changed (I typically avoid that particular conference). It was in New Orleans, DC and Chicago (I Think) in the interim.
"What the f—k happened to this place?"
Leftist policies happened to it.
Downtown SF cell traffic is 30% of pre-pandemic levels. That city is dying.
Well when you throw all of the insane people onto the streets as you closed all of the mental institutions, institute polices that pay them to live on the streets, institute more policies to make it impossible for the police and courts to deal with the situation, then institute more policies that encourage all of the bad behavior and crime that goes with it, you get a city in decline. Blaming everybody and everything except yourselves and your own policies is not the solution.
But the progressives running SF and other big blue cities are only doing what they actually want to do - destroy existing society so they can build a new world utopia in its place. The fact that they have no idea how to actually build anything does not deter them. Ideology and feelings are the only things that matter. Reality is not a concern.
According the the left - that is hate speech. Arrest him!

What's more cruel, letting the mentally ill live and defecate on the streets, or making a joke about the mentally ill living and defecating on the streets?
"But at least one attendee at the show — the guy sitting next to me —"
How did Gentile know this was a "guy"?
Q. What the f—k happened to this place?
A. The Democrat Party
The Left wants everyone to live in cities, yet are making the cities unlivable. Stupid f*cks.
“Y’all [N-words] need a Batman!”
They've had one. Many of them. All of them caped-crusading high net worth champagne/limousine liberal Burce Waynes who have promised big and delivered small.
The last thing they need is a Batman. They've had tens of Batmans, it's why they are the way they are...they're keep waiting for the wrong Bruce Wayne.
What happened to San Francisco is nothing compared to what happened to Chicago (aka “Chi-raq”). In 2022 695 prople were murdered, and yet this represented a huge decline from the previous two years! There were over 2800 shootings, so thank God the teenagers of Chicago can’t shoot very accurately.
It’s one thing to have to step over a pile of human feces to enter an upscale restaurant; quite another to walk around yellow crime scene tspe and know from the small chalk outline that a child has died.
I found this article via Instapundit. In the middle of the article, the writer breaks a wall and speaks more directly to the reader: "A note to my fellow San Franciscians: I’m sorry. I know. There’s always some story in the east-coast press about how our city is dying. San Franciscians hate—HATE—these pieces. You’re a stooge and a traitor for writing one. When I set out reporting, I wanted to write a debunking-the-doom piece myself. Yet to live in San Francisco right now, to watch its streets, is to realize that no one will catch you if you fall."
A bit clickbait for the article, there is this quote: "This is Ron DeSantis’s worst nightmare". I think the person saying it doesn't understand who is having the nightmare.
The author of the article in SFGate doesn't hide his/her/their/its/zes/!? disdain for Chappelle and his 'dangerous' routine. But there's no response to Chappelle's disgust at what's happened to SF, as if the reality smacking (!) everyone in the face is hardly worth observing. Very weird. Unlike that author, but very much like Chappelle, many people have taken note of the realities, aren't willing to accept what it's become, don't see any collective will to do anything about it and so have decided that the only solution is to leave.
"What the f—k happened to this place?"
Progressivism.
He's right. That is the destiny of all the Progressive Utopias. Enjoy the downfall.
And we all understand exactly what he means when he says "You need Batman!" don't we?
Dave says what he sees. It's notable that every red-lined link in this write-up leads to a left-wing screaming point. SFGate and the Chronicle may be divorced but they still share the same toilet.
How dare you insult my sh*thole.
How many times did the store proprietor have to clean up human feces before he had enough and hosed down a homeless person? We spare little to no time thinking about all the people affected by the crime and literal shit and the world becomes a shittier and shittier place.
I remember inviting a distinguished person to have lunch at Bob Evans at such and such a time, and as we went in we noticed a pool of vomit outside the door.
"Strictly speaking we don't know whether he was going in or out," I suggested.
That SF Gate writer was awful. Does seem like a tipping point for San Fran. But I think the rational people have mostly left and there are too many people like the SF Gate writer still there.
I can assure you that Dave Chappelle did not say Ya'll N-words.
"9/10 of the retail in Copley Plaza have their doors locked but the lights on and they are full of merchandise. Some are staffed some not. Nobody comes to the door when a shopper tries to go in…"
The Copley Place mall is open during off hours, so the stores are closed even as people are walking through, they don't open until 11AM so that is likely what you are seeing. The weather was beutiful yesterday and the city packed.
Boston is actually doing quite well. So far, the ethnics (italian, irish, conservative hispanics) have kept a lid on progressive foolishness. It will be intersting to see how long that lasts.
Just spent three days in London. The joint is jumpin’. Lots and lots of American tourists.
Chicago? Not a fan of the new or the old mayor. It is hard to imagine a recovery with that kind of political leadership. The civic leadership has disappeared. I think the new mayor is just going to try to milk a dead cow for “his people”.
They don't need a Batman. They need a 1990's Rudy Giuliani.
My SF experiences:
Mid 80's - Late teen years. Friend and I take a week long vacation to the Bay Area. SF was fun, different, carefree, and safer than NYC. Great memories.
Mid 2010's - I'm working for a large firm with an office in SF. I remotely manage a small team there while living on the East Coast. Travel there regularly over a 3 year period for a week at a time. Always walk from hotel to office and back (15-30 minutes each way).
- Accosted for various reasons
- Witness naked man walking down the street only wearing a sun hat and flip flops at 8AM on a sunny weekday.
- lots of panhandlers and street protests
- Dozens of homeless encamped under blankets in doorways of operating businesses or in the middle of the sidewalk at busy intersections or constructing shelters out of tarps and duct tape around light poles on busy streets. This is a daily feature.
Seems worse now. Several years since my last visit. Based on current conditions that last visit will be my last visit.
That article is awful.
"If you follow comedy or pop culture news, you know Chappelle has said plenty of irresponsible and dangerous things." Like what? I'm so glad we have the author as the arbiter of irresponsible and dangerous.
"Chappelle’s comedy took a dark turn toward transphobia." Or maybe he thinks men can't be women. Such crazy talk.
"Chappelle didn’t go deep into his TERF beliefs Thursday; instead, he settled for a barrage of transphobic dog whistles." Uh huh. Dog whistles.
It's gonna get worse before it gets better, if ever.

Boston is actually doing quite well.
It was 11:15 local time, just fyi..
...and you are certainly entitled to your opinion but Back Bay has been my neighborhood for three decades so i have a good sense of the rhythm of the place. My office is still here. For as nice a Sunday as we had it was by no means 'packed' by historical standards. It should have been difficult to walk down Newbury street. No problem walking or driving. This was a big graduation weekend and the city should have been a zoo. Instead you could do a walk in to eat just about anywhere...
...but draw your own conclusions I suppose....
"It's gonna get worse before it gets better, if ever."
Hard to see it getting better at this point. Once the wealth generators leave, they're not coming back.
I remember thinking that working in SF about 8-10 years ago.
So far, the ethnics (italian, irish, conservative hispanics) have kept a lid on progressive foolishness.
Some of the new craziness on tiop of the usual Massachusetts corruption: No prosecution for shoplifting, including grand theft. Illegals aren't processed for even serious crimes. A shiny new 'millionaire's tax'. We're not talking about the same Boston are we? I mean the Boston, Massachusetts Boston...
San Fran is not viable. Abort.
"Whether it's the racism (which I've spoken about for years) the adulterous white bullshit mayor, or the adulterous white bullshit mayor's love for cults, or the general lack of respect for morals, or the general lack of any good sense - or, really, anything else - personally, I'm sick of the bullshit "no one wants to touch" in San Francisco. That city's been hiding the fact that it's a sick, evil, and toxic place - filled with cults that are spreading their corrosive magic-thinking ("you can believe whatever you want to believe") and making normal people miserable - for a long, long, time."

That's over a decade-and-a-half head start, on an issue any fool could see, yet I was taking my life in my hands to say it openly. And now it's infecting everything, and many people are claiming it's impossible to stop - Richard Dreyfuss says we're in our last days - because they're still not listening. There's no "woke mind virus". There's just the NewAge Movement. The same one that once had America believing in "mood rings". And Germany putting Jews in ovens. You gotta watch what you believe. We don't
Obama campaigning with Oprah, and no one asking him if he was the new Dr Oz, was America's last great missed opportunity. Now our Vice President is the ex-girlfriend of Montel-talk-to-the-dead Williams, and the media demands to know why Oprah's former "spiritual advisor" isn't going to get to debate Biden. The nation has lost touch with reality. But it's not out of reach
"the whole city is the Tenderloin now. "
How dare he be right. How dare he!
But it was clear from the amount of laughter in the room — and his continual ability to sell out shows in the most LGBTQ+ friendly city in America — that there’s still a large portion of the population who will only ever know him as the guy that did those Rick James impressions. Those fans weren’t disappointed, but everyone else who has been paying attention would have been.
Lefties are so certain of their righteousness and unassailable virtue that they must construct fables about the clueless Lyft driver and "the guy sitting next to" him in order to avoid what is clear to everyone else: Chappelle is hilariously saying what the rest of us hateful clods are quietly thinking (without the comedic genius).
"He told a story about eating at an Indian restaurant in the Tenderloin a few nights earlier, only to have someone defecate in front of the restaurant as he was walking in"
In the interest of fairness, I witnessed the same thing while leaving a performance of "Greater Tuna" at the Alcazar Theatre in the Tenderloin way back in 1987, so this isn't a new thing at all.
"Or maybe he thinks men can't be women."
XY =/= XX
The science is settled.

yep! soon (real soon); we'll look back at 2023 with longing, and sorrowful remembrance.
Remember back in 2023? When it was only people sh*tting on the streets that we had to worry about?
Heck! even that was only in the major cities... NOT LIKE NOW!!
Revealing quote in the article that Leland linked to:
“We just need to make people go back to those offices.”
You have to love how the leftist gentry see autonomous human beings as figurines to be moved around a gameboard.
"What the f—k happened to this place?"
If you listen to the Democrats, "democracy".
That's "democracy" taking a shit on the sidewalk while you're trying to eat.
And if you don't like it, you're a "white supremacist".
Now the left are kicking our VETS out of hotels and using our tax payer dollars to house Illegal Entrants.
Why not fill downtown SF empty offices with Illegal Entrants?
Crack Emcee

Sometimes someone throws a bucket of water on your head.
Sometimes a tsunami kicks up a 100' wave and floods the coastal town.
In both cases you get wet, so its all the same I suppose.
2014 - I had to walk a few city blocks at dusk to my hotel from the civic Center BART.
Drugged out homeless drug zombies roaming all over.. the gag reflex smell of urine and feces all around...
I used to love SF. Now it's a toilet.
In 2010, if asked to list the 10 best quality of life cities in the US, I would have included on the list, near the top, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland OR, and Seattle. The voters then decided they didn't much want quality of life in their cities. And here we are.
"What the f—k happened to this place?"
Leftist policies happened to it.

Yep. And they either didn't understand what those policies would do, in which case they're idiots or they did and they're evil.
There aren't any other options.
SF has been on the road to becoming Shithole City since the mid 80s. LA, San Diego and Sacramento are close behind. Been there and left.
I get the sense the tide is turning on all things woke. It's just a wisp of air I'm feeling up here in the crow's nest of the world but that wisp is distinct in odor: it smells of human feces. And the crew on the deck below are starting to vomit.
I just had the whole upstairs bar at Grill 23 to myself at dinner time. Yes is was the day after Mothers Day but even the regulars that don’t have mothers weren’t there…amazing
To be fair I have yet to see human feces on the sidewalk though I did not open any of the plastic shopping bags full of ?? I walked by…
Democrats. Democrats happened, Dave.
I don't trust Californians who move to Texas, but to be a Texan who moves to San Francisco of his own free will is a special kind of stupid.
"In both cases you get wet, so its all the same I suppose."
It was simply a statement of fact. Your interpretation is entirely your own.
My point (if there even was one) is that Ess Eff has been on a downward spiral for at least 36 years. It's really nothing new.
