"The focus on perceived threats to impressionable children has a long history in American sexual politics."

"It has its roots in the 'Save Our Children' campaign championed in 1977 by Anita Bryant, the singer known for her orange juice commercials, to repeal a local ordinance in Dade-Miami County that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation, a historic setback for the modern gay rights movements."

To refresh your recollection, here's what we saw from Anita Bryant in 1977:

Bryant strongly expressed the position that gay people — unless they kept "in the closet" — should not be allowed to work as schoolteachers.

All I remember about Bryant is that she was mocked by whatever media I consumed. I would've been 13 at the time, attending Catholic school.

Hollywood and magazines have dominated youth opinion for a long time.

My fist reaction is: Straw man. The concern is the sexualization of young children, granting pedophiles access to small children, grooming and brainwashing of young children, and sexual exhibitionism requiring the involvement of young children…but if a universal aspect of homosexuality is accessing young children for expression of sexuality and we’re just recently letting that part out of the closet, then Bryant was spot on…

Wasn’t it the campaign FOR transgender rights what motivated conservatives, as well as fair-minded athletes, parents, etc? There is a broad spectrum of people against these so-called rights, which effectively bully people into allowing biological men into biological women’s spaces, events and honors. People advocating for genital mutilation are not just a “perceived” threat!

The NYT writer is perceiving this issue backwards, on purpose, to denigrate the real threat to a simple religious whine.

The push back on the trans militants and drag shows involving children has nothing to do with civil rights or "tolerance" or political philosophy or religion and everything to do with revulsion to the obvious pedophile undercurrents and indecency associated with the movement. That's not going to change, no matter how much you or the NYT lobby for it. This is not the same as the gay rights or same sex marriage movements, it's about child abuse. We listened to your arguements regarding the NC "same sex bathroom and locker room" law that produced a boycott of NC. We were assured that opening the girls' locker rooms would not mean perverts would use the opportunity thus granted to legally ogle naked children. In retrospect how well do your academic arguements about that hold up in the girls locker rooms? If you've been paying attention you know.

Given what has surfaced on places like TikTok, maybe Bryant was prescient. I'm not a religious person so what the Bible says about homosexuality carries no water for me, but I believe all teachers, gay, straight, leftwing, rightwing, religious, not religious, should keep their sexual, religious, and political beliefs out of the classroom. No rainbows to signify gay pride, and no rainbows to signify the covenant God made with Noah. Kids should be addressed by the name and gender that appears on the birth certificate they used to register for school unless it has been legally changed. A teacher's religion, sexuality, and political leanings should not be questioned in hiring, but if they become the culture of their classroom, the teacher should be let go. Bryant isn't saying homosexuals shouldn't be allowed to teach, and neither am I.

Are gay rights trans rights?

I always thought Gay marriage was gays wanting to enjoy the same rights as straight people. I was sold on that, right then.

What trans rights are trans now not enjoying that straights and gays are enjoying?

I have more questions than answers at this… juncture.

The fact that minors are getting surgically altered is… disturbing.

Sorry if I sound transphobic but removing body parts from a minor is not like going to a lawyer to get a divorce.

If I’m wrong I want to hear convincing, persuasive arguments that this is is all safe and effective for minors.

Adults can do whatever the fuck they want.

It should have opposed gay marriage, as a perversion of the institution. Everybody was for civil unions though.

Marriage is (was) a domestication of mutual suspicions between men and women. That's how Thurber's men and women became art. There's no such dynamic in gay marriage.

Wm. Kerrigan
We are men and women. It almost always matters which we are. Men and women are aggressive. Their regard for each other is clouded by grudges, suspicions, fears, needs, desires, and narcissistic postures. There's no scrubbing them out. The best you can hope for is domestication, as in football, rock, humor, happy marriage, and a good prose style.

Screw the NYT, this is simply a return to sterilization of undesirables. Instead of "forced", they claim "gender affirmation". Whatever the claim, gender fluidity as a concept doesn't exist. As soon as a child hints at being transexual, any adult can take that child to the states of Washington and California and have the child sterilized for life. Too bad if your gender was fluid. The only difference, as Begley notes, is instead of gays, it is transsexual, except they keep conflating the two, so let them explain why they do so as they push sterilization.

That gay people oughtn't teach is ridiculous. My favorite class in high school was taught by a lesbian gym teacher. That, and she showed us all how to properly groom our fingernails.

Does the new york times think there won't be a very real push back? They really believe the angry reaction to the radical transgender movements' effect on children is just about politics?

This is why I hate the new york times; so much spin and deception in every sentence.

Amadeus 48 म्हणाले...

Some believe that the Human Rights Campaign, having been taken unawares by their quick victory with gay marriage, quickly shifted gears to "transgender rights" at the same time that social media evolved leading to a contagion among adolescent girls. Most notable transgender cases up until recently were men in middle age--Jan Morris, Renee Richards, Dierdre McCloskey, Jennifer Pritzker, Caitlin Jenner. Now we have young girls by the score saying they are really boys--and being encouraged to mutilation of their bodies at a time when many cannot get a tattoo legally.

When people stopped believing in God, that had consequences. It is amazing indeed to watch intelligent, privileged people stop believing in biology.

The reason we don't want transgendered teachers in schools is that they are delusional and deluded.

Do you know who’s children are not going to drag story time? The children of urban liberal elites. They want their kids to follow them to achievement and power, to continue the dynasty, not to be a sterile caricature of a person. Do trans kids go to HBS and become CEO’s? (Of course they do dear.) The child trans cannon fodder are the children of middle class graspers who want to be associated with elites. Mom needs a mission. Similar to the moms need a kid beauty pageant phenomenon.

I suppose that if gayness is indeed a genetic behavior then there will be more trans people and fewer gay people in the next generation, at least until the moral panic bubble breaks.

I remember a time when it was OK if a little girl wanted to play with trucks, or a little boy wanted to play with dolls. A time where we said it was OK if children didn’t conform to the gender stereotype of their biological sex.

That does not appear to be the case anymore. Effeminate boys and masculine girls are told that they are actually “inhabiting the wrong body”. It’s not OK to be weird and nonconforming. Instead they are going to use radical surgery to conform your body to your behavior, whether it makes sense or not. And who are likely to be the victims of most of this surgical conversion therapy? Gay kids. And yet somehow mutilating and sterilizing gay children is LGBTQ+ affirmation?

Political Junkie म्हणाले...

Socialization and cultural influences on children of course matter.

As an elementary school kid around 1980, at school before school started, we played a game where a group, all boys, threw one tennis ball/racquet ball against a wall. If you caught it cleanly, you threw the ball back against the wall. If you dropped it, you had to run to the wall and touch the wall. While you were running, someone was allowed to grab the ball and throw it at the person who dropped the ball. "Pegging" the person. If you missed on your "peg" attempt, you had to run to the wall and someone could peg you. A cycle could commence. Also, each time you dropped a ball you received a point. Once you had accumulated 3 or 5 points, that person had to go to the wall and everyone playing lined up about 10 feet from the person on the wall and threw as hard as they could to "peg" the kid on the wall.

There are attributes (positive and negative) that were learned from this activity. The school leaders eventually forced us to stop playing.

The game had several names, which I shall not write here, but I remember from over 40 years ago.

There is certainly no reason for homosexuals to come "out of the closet" in the classroom other than to groom children (you know, "grooming", another "conspiracy theory" rooted in fact). LGBT+ activism is an anti-Christian movement intended to pave the way for moral relativism which in turn will pave the way for the downfall of the Republic. "For the children" is a favorite line of Democrats. Why does it become something insidious when it's applied to trying to protect children from the trans lobby? One can imagine the Times of ancient Carthage finding something fraudulent and deceptive about efforts to ban child sacrifice.

Even Ronald Reagan opposed California's 1978 Briggs Initiative, which would have barred homosexuals from teaching in public schools. A surprising number of my high school teachers were gay, but they didn't talk about it. We didn't know and didn't spend time wondering. The transgender movement seems bent on erasing gays. The little boy who liked to play with dolls might have grown up gay, 10-15 years ago.

Now the transgenderists are saying that "no, he's not gay, he is a she" and using that as an excuse to turn them into sexless orcs.

Taken to an extreme, it will eventually eliminate gay men altogether.

Achieving Bryant's goal.

Next step will be to identify those with the gay gene early on and abort them.

Obviously you can't just exterminate gays after they are born. But in the womb? When they are just a lump of flesh? When it is "Her body, her choice" the woman can "choose" to abort the fetus for any reason, including gender or sexual preference, of general convenience. Society can work on women. What rational woman would choose to have a gay baby?

A generation or two and there are no more gay men. Those that might have been are carved up into freakish outcasts.

They ought to be surprised to see you in the grocery store, never having imagined that you even existed outside the classroom. You are there to teach them to read, to write, to do math, to understand science and geography, etc. And that "etc" doesn't include anything to do with sexuality, LGBT+++ pride, gender identity, and the like. Maybe a higher percentage of students would be proficient in those carefully measured disciplines, if our teachers would focus on their jobs, rather than on recruiting a new crop for the rainbow flag.

Bryant was correct. The selective equity and inclusion of diversity dogma under the Pro-Choice ethical religion has placed us on a progressive path and grade, forcing the same catastrophic incongruities that have undermined human and social viability time and time again under secular religions throughout history.

Public sector unions should be illegal.

I agree, and I'm a member of three of them.

Transphobic has been allowed to be the catch-all phrase for far too long. I have no irrational fear (phobia) of trans folks. I just don’t like the militant insistance that I adhere to your pronouns, that all should be accepted. I’m a gay guy and I have dismissed guys who decided I should call them girls. Sorry, not my job to indulge your fantasies. Do what you want to do in your private life, but forcing on me in public isn’t something I will do. Trying to shove things in my face with flags and t-shirts is not going to engender support from me. Phobic does not equate to distaste. I’m not phobic about martial arts movies my husband likes. I simply don’t like them. Not hateful towards them, but not folks I would take as friends.

A man who wants to become a woman in order to attract straight men.

Congratulations, you're gay!

My bold-type addition. A man attracted to men who unfortunately aren't attracted to him. It smacks, to me, of resentment.

Or maybe vengeance.

The obvious explanation for young girls' going trans seems to me to be rooted in the same bodily discomfort that literally every girl I knew, myself definitely included, went through as puberty began to hit: why can't I stay little and smooth-skinned and not lumpy? Why has even my scent changed? And good God, menstruation?! A minefield of potential social disasters! Everything is embarrassing and boys notice and mean girls notice and I'm in despair!

And then you go through it and come out the other side, and in almost every case, you're happy with being a woman. These poor girls aren't even being afforded the chance to be happy in their own skins.

I agree. I looked up the Arkansas trans case up on Pacer. There must have been 50 lawyers working on the trans side. I was astounded.

Big Trans. Also a war chest to buy all the lobbyists and therefore all the politicians…and they don’t require the Republicans to support them- just stay out of our way, they say. Gladly, say the GOP…

The old NYT go-to: the religious right. I would bet the non-religious majority of Americans, if asked, would say a male dressing like a female is play-acting. Cross-dressing. No big whoop. Whatever gets you off. Just don't pretend you really are what you're acting like or expect everyone else to alter their reality to fit your fantasy.

There is a television show in the UK called Naked Education. A group of adults take their clothes off in front of a classroom full of teenagers. I can imagine that trannies will soon demand their place in the lineup. That's where this is going.
Perhaps in season 2 they can copulate in front of the kids, for a more thorough "education".
Last night on SNL the trans cast member gave a big speech during the weekend update segment, telling us how they were all advocates "for the children". I've see every episode of that show since Chevy Chase fell off the stage on season 1, but I had to turn it off after that display of perversion.

"...but if a universal aspect of homosexuality is accessing young children for expression of sexuality and we’re just recently letting that part out of the closet...."

There is no evidence this is so. (And, you leave unsaid that there are heterosexual pederasts as well as homosexual pederasts).

I take as a given that the exaggerated, even hysterical, campaigns to alarm the public about "threats" to children by sexual perverts of various and sundry kinds are popular among the right because they have few or no actual policy ideas to address the manifold other serious problems facing our or any complex society. In lieu of policy discussions, they create scapegoats and threats, demonize the other side as being active or passive facilitators of perverts (and their perversions on children), and Voila!, they have their political campaigns!

Monty Python did that in The Meaning of Life 40 years ago. (The "practical example" is about 2/3 of the way through the clip).

Some believe that the Human Rights Campaign, having been taken unawares by their quick victory with gay marriage, quickly shifted gears to "transgender rights" at the same time that social media evolved leading to a contagion among adolescent girls"

Chloe Cole does a great job of expressing that, which is why the Left works so hard to discredit and marginalize her. And given her actual experience, it makes them look foolish.

Because if there's anything the Left hates, it's the lived experience of someone that blows up their narrative.

What I am hoping for is a mad rush of trans-women trying out for the US women's soccer team. Because THAT would be awesome!

dragging out the ancient bogeyman Bryant won't change the fact that sexualizing children and bringing in pedophile perverts to read to them is disgusting and wrong
