"We will slowly roll out to every individual news agency. They can come see the tapes as well. Let everyone see them to bring their own judgment."

Said Kevin McCarthy, quoted in "McCarthy: January 6 tapes to be ‘slowly’ rolled out to networks besides Fox News/Republican House speaker has only let Fox News see the tapes so far, giving access to the primetime host Tucker Carlson" (The Guardian).

Why is he saying "tapes" — to make it seem as though this material is bulky and difficult to copy and transfer to various places? You can "can come see the tapes"?! Isn't this all digital material that could be sent to anyone effortlessly?
On Sunday, McCarthy claimed he did not “give” the tapes to Carlson. “I didn’t give the tapes,” he said. “I allowed [him] to come see them, just like an exclusive with anybody else. My goal here is transparency.”

Well, you are failing. That doesn't feel transparent at all. And if everyone else could just do what Carlson had to go — where? — to "see," why didn't everyone else just do that? And how did Carlson produce an edited version if he was just "seeing" "tapes"? Something like this?:

@Althouse -- You are being too literal. People who grew up with films and tapes and records often still say film or tape or records. Carlson viewed the content. Second, giving it to Fox for an exclusive was an obvious tit-for-tat after two years of one-sided Capital Hill framing by the Democrats and Liz Cheney. Red meat. Petty. Yep, both sides.

We are living in a dysfunctional, reckless 'better to rule in hell than serve in heaven' era.

Why? We are seeing things we hadn't seen before, in a way the MSM couldn't spin in advance.

Why "at all"? It's lot more transparent than anything the Dem committee did for two years.

The transparency so far doesn't exonerate the rioters. It does show that the insurrection narrative is ridiculous. That's a success.

The Democrats had these "tapes", "Video Files", whatever we call them, for two years exclusively. They gave them to a producer to make tv video montages and even added fake sound. I think that the Republicans rolling them out to the public over a 3 month period from taking leadership of the House is quite a good exercise in transparency. Is anyone saying that Pelosi was more transparent? or is this an example of only criticizing the side many hate, the Republican enemy, not your friends, the Democrats.

Notably, in a previous Althouse post, people also used the term "footage" without comment, which alludes to film (or tape), rather than data storage.

Oh, baloney, Professor! If the NYT was the single entity with access to the tapes, every lefty on the planet would call that "transparent" knowing full well that disclosures would be doctored to suit the Democrats.

We all know what will happen when the tapes are now released to the leftmediaswine. We know because it's already happened with J6 Committee releases.

This is such a fine blog post.

The questions raised by Althouse are the right ones, and well-stated. The only thing that bothers me -- and it isn't much -- is that the answers to her earnest questions are almost as clear as the questions themselves.

Why the "exclusive" for Tucker Carlson? Because it's good for Tucker -- exceedingly good, for ratings -- and it was a favor that McCarthy could do for a favored media outlet, and also a favor to the Matt Gaetz subgroup in the Freedom Caucus. It's a virtually explicit deal, right? Gaetz, MTG; their group of Speaker-vote holdouts. They came around to allowing McCarthy to hold the gavel, because McCarthy agreed to basically their entire laundry list of demands. And one of the items was, "put all of the J6 video recordings out." And I think that "release them exclusively to Tucker" was like the cherry on top.

None of this is any supposition or conspiracy-mongering. I think that if he were in the right mood, with the right interviewer, Gaetz would admit to absolutely all of it.

It's a pretty delicious power-flex for Gaetz. Like when he was interviewed in the immediate aftermath of the Speakership vote and he laughingly said that they had run out of things to ask for! A thoroughly remarkable demonstration of McCarthy's fundamental weakness as Speaker.

What, McCarthy is failing where the January 6th committee succeeded? We just went through and ABC produced prime time propaganda campaign led by the evil Liz Cheney.

Sure...dump everything. There's like 40,000 hrs, right? Even if McCarthy "clipped" the footage of the Water Buffalo Shaman being escorted by Capitol Police it's a great start. They guy got set up and railroaded and is in jail as a political prisoner of the Uniparty and Deep State. He's disposable like the rest of us.

What is ABC going to do with the footage? They've already seen it I'm sure. They were in on the J6 production and propaganda. Pelosi, McConnel and the J6 committee know what they DON'T want shown. They were in on it.

Of course the corrupt Capitol Police call Carlson's footage "misleading". Once again like every bullshit leftwing push back on Veritas, you're not supposed to believe what you can see with your own eyes.

Bottom line is thank the Freedom Caucus and Matt Gaetz or we wouldn't be seeing anything.

Carlson's access led to the [relatively] quick release of unseen-earlier scenes injected some contradiction vis-a vis the Dem interpretation(s) of the most controversial events/defendants re: what happened on January 6th: it bookends certain events (if you will.)

A blast of 40k+ HOURS of video to the public would have resulted in an overwhelming and likely confusing tsunami of twitter-like confetti messaging, of little value.
With what's now been released (the "bookends"), viewing and interpretation of a full release is now more likely to be more focused, more relevant to the core understandings of "what happened."

And, whatever one thinks of Carlson, it's extremely unlikely that his viewing choices and interpretations of same would be tempered by any deference to Dem influences. Which is necessary, if his viewership is to grant him any legitimacy whatsoever on the matters at issue.

His job is the rebuttal, the cross-examination, that was denied in the Dems' Jan 6th Committee....

Temujin म्हणाले...

Carlson kept requesting and requesting the videos for months. Did the other networks request to see these? Or maybe...just maybe they were too focused on protecting The Narrative, the J6 Committee claims that this was the darkest day in America- this insurrection with cameras in hand and no guns. When it was announced that Carlson would have access, did they say "Good! Now we can finally get to the bottom of this. We'll see what happened."? Nope they didn't. They suddenly seemed interested on seeing those videos. Like a child who doesn't want the candy, then sees another child taking the candy and proceeds to pout and shout and stamp their feet that the other child should not have the candy because it's theirs. At any time did they request to see the videos, or were they too busy attacking those of us who kept pointing out there were tens of thousands of hours of video that the public owns, but are not being allowed to see?

The networks didn't get it first because they didn't want them. They wanted conservative heads and that's all they were focused on. Now, it'll be interesting to see how they tell the world their view on the videos. They will tell us- and you know this to be true- that we are not seeing what our eyes are seeing. And that only the experts can tell us what we're seeing. And MSNBC, NBC, CNN all happen to be the ones who have the 'experts'.

exhelodrvr1 म्हणाले...

Ann,
Why are you focusing on this, and not asking why the J6 committee didn't release these about 18 months ago? That is the main issue here. Or should be.

Aggie म्हणाले...

Should we assume that the major news outlets have not asked the Speaker for access to the video record, prior to this? It's been 2 years, after all.

I only started hearing complaints once Tucker started covering the story. And the complaints were primarily about his exclusive deal. In other words, the problem was, 'Tucker has an exclusive deal that we're not included in'. Not: 'Hey, we want to cover this important story, too'. Of course that might just be an artifact of the way modern news coverage works.

But, it certainly seemed that the Legacy Corporate Main Stream Media's umbrage was that the new Republican Speaker gave Tucker special, inside-channel consideration, and that's just plain wrong.

I disagree. Carlson has THE highest ratings on TV and a lot of people still get their news from TV - plus we know that what Fox News says becomes news to the rest of the media, both traditional and "new." Giving the footage to Carlson guaranteed maximum reach. Putting it all online and exhorting people to go watch it would have resulted in some bloggers' posting on it and being immediately discounted by all the outlets who uncritically went - still go - with the Dangerous Democracy-Threatening Insurrection!! After-School Special.

Furthermore - why Carlson, aside from the reach? Is it just that Republicans like Fox and wanted to reward them? Sure, I'm willing to say that McCarthy knew very well that offering the footage to all the major outlets at once would result in only Fox airing anything but the aforementioned After-School-Special version, but Chuck, name another TV journo who showed any interest in digging into the electoral fraud claims - any of them, from voting machines to mail-in ballot fraud to rule changes expanding absentee ballot eligibility and acceptance of ballots way after the election to deplatforming pro-Trump posters and flagging or removing pro-Trump or anti-Biden news in the months leading up to the election.

Note: Carlson didn't support or endorse any of those claims. But he did entertain the questions. And he did try to bring on people who did support those claims, and ask them for their evidence.

Name another person in the news media who was being that curious or objective.

Can you send them easily? You can't just email that massive amount of data. You could send links for people to access them remotely, but then you would have to be prepared for the traffic those links would get. Also, it would be a magnet for people trying to hack the servers.

You could just release it to the public, but then you'd have faked videos out faster than real ones. (Along with the same problems I mentioned above.) A slow, controled release isn't optimal, but it's better than the other option. If the Democrats and their media friends object to this, they had a couple of years to do it differently but chose to hoard the video instead.

If it had been released to other news companies, they would have declared it all a big "nothing burger" the first day of receiving it. Since Carlson had it first, now they're going to have to go through it all to make sure he didn't save any surprises.

I expect that it is all digital, and would be be technologically easy to make the videos available to all online. That’s I think the ultimate goal. They need to be crowdsourced, so that what actually happened that day can become public. Why crowdsourced? Because the project is too big for most other approaches. Why start with Carlson? Sure, part could be political payback for the Speakership, but I think that it was shrewder than that. Carlson would naturally be accused of cherry picking, which he no doubt did. It’s the claim of cherry picking by the Dems that is likely going to drive the full release of the video from that day, as well as favoritism. The best way to that is full release. And with that, with the crowd sourcing putting the pieces together, the American people can see what happened that day, and in particular, who was behind it. Not just Ray Epps, but also others. Was it FBI and DHS? AntiFA and Black Bloc? Etc. Just in time for the 2024 elections.

These other news sources have been quick to report lies about the J6 "insurrection," many of them refusing to correct the record even after it was obvious they were wrong and even repeating those lies. Of course, this may be because journalists are poorly informed in general and just don't have a clue. I suppose it is not lying if you are stupid.

Darkisland म्हणाले...

Gusty,

I wonder how many people here are old enough to remember record "albums"?

Up to the early 50s records were onm 78 RPM disks and would come in an actual "album" of 4-12 records in a hardcovered book with a sleeve for each record. It actually met the definition of an album.

We kept calling LP 33s albums out of habit. And even today, even though there is no physical media at all, we still call Rihanna's latest release an "album".

I am OK with calling it tape but it does feel a bit wierd.

And why can't they just release all of it? Even Tucker, as I understand it, was only allowed to view the video in a controlled setting. He was not allowed to make copies or even take pictures.

I agree with others, put the entire 41,000 hours up on the web, let anyone download it and crowdsource the best moments.

I do not understand why they do not do this. If there are security issues, showing secret rooms and doors, let that be redacted before release. I suspect that is pretty minimal. CNN and Pelosi's spawn have already shown some (many?) of the security features so perhaps it is a moot point.

But they are still hiding stuff. Release it all. Release it today.

Giving access to Carlson - AT THE START - was a good plan. But now that was done, others should be given access too. Some of this, needs to be posted online in its entirely. If they have to blur out faces so be it.

The better way, would have a panel of Republican staffers go through and decide which portions can be released to the public. IOW, do what the J6 committee should have done. What EXACTLY was going on INSIDE The capital. How many police were REALLY seriously injured. How many people were REALLY committing vandalism. And how many 'tresspasser' were just waved in by the police and walked around peacefully? This panel could also look into "WHy were the police just standing around and/or waving people into the capital"?

My suspicion is that only a handful of people were stealing things, and breaking windows. there were 1000 people who entered the building. How many did anything illegal, other than trespass? My guess is about 5 percent.

Variations of "giving Carlson first crack at the spin" appear above. McCarthy said very clearly that he "gave access to the one and only" news agency that asked for it. You may also recall every other news agency crying that this would put America in danger because Carlson would release cherry-picked propaganda and disclose security secrets: the two exact things the J6 committee itself* actually fucking did.

*Note Fang-Fang's boyfriend Eric actually put out a J6 video on Twitter that he got his hands on and he disclosed the secret exit, and Nancy Pelosi's daughter released video from inside the safe room for Congress and not peep was heard from the bedwetters. Mighty handy that she just happened to be shooting a documentary on the day her mom set up a riot and pretended to be in danger.

McCarthy was a teen when VHS players hit in the 80s, so it's possible he thinks of "tapes" the same way my grandparents would "listen" to a television show.

Or, maybe he is being dodgy. He certainly could have guessed how Carlson would play this. Cynically, of course.

Lots of leaps of faith here. "McConnell is real villian in this. " Tell us how, please.

I often play a little thought experiment here. Let's say that BLM or some other lefty organization stormed the Capitol because Trump won and the results had been similar--arrests, jail sentences, etc. I know with certainty that the conservatives here--or whatever it is they are--would be perfectly fine with those results. There would be no hand wringing over violations of Constitutional rights. And if people break the law, they deserve punishment. I see lots of concern about punishment doled out to fellow travelers, little actual concern for anyone's rights.

Why not?

The Senate Democrats have full copies of all the tapes, all the video. They can release it to anyone they want.

So if there's anything in there where Carlson is cheating, the Democrats will do that. The fact that they haven't done that yet indicates that Senate Democrats think the tapes are so bad for their narrative that even giving them all to the NYT or WaPo will make things worse for the Left.

McCarthy gave them just to Carlson first, so that he could release the truth, and it wouldn't be drowned out by the Left. the goal of "transparency" is to get the truth out, not to enable bad actors to drown the truth in sewage.

But what your'e complaining about is that McCarthy hasn't helped the Left create sewage.

What you should be asking yourself is "why hasn't Schumer given all this to the NYT?"

I get it. But "tapes" does conjure up thoughts or memories of the Nixon tapes (the missing 18 minutes especially), the Johnson tapes, sex tapes...

All things that are recorded, but not necessarily meant for public consumption, which is also the case with newly release J6 footage. Even the term "footage" references tapes as it's dictionary definition is, "a length of film made for movies or television". Seems like distracting semantics. Or...a well chosen term.

I’m all for releasing everything as well. Let the public sift through. But, I’d imagine with the successful coup that was pulled off on the American electorate in 2020, and on J6, there is “footage” even Matt Gaetz and McCarthy are worried about releasing.

At the moment everyone on both sides is sowing seeds of doubt. It just so happens it’s the MAGA side telling the truth about the events surrounding the 2020 election.

Truth in America doesn’t matter anymore. Especially on the "intellectual" left.

And Hawley was not a coward who ran away. Fact. Officer shineck wasn't hit on the head by the protesters and didn't die of those injuries. He was walking around AFTER the Riot, with his helmet on and looking just fine. Fact.

We also have footage that shows one of the protesters being dragged through the tunnel for 15 minutes before she died. She wan't Trampled by the crowd. She was knocked down and beaten by the police.

Just because the leftwing MSM and J6 commmitte congressmen lie and deciptively edit film doesn't mean everyone does. Of course, its INEVITABLE in ANY controversy to get the "Both sides are wrong" or "The truth is in the middle" types.

Seems to me that's what 40,000 hours of recordings released directly to the public would have been. What's the likelihood that the people who did happen upon the paydirt would have also had the juice to publicize it effectively?

As others have pointed out, if Carlson has indeed misled with his selective editing, by all means, "transparent" Congresspeople ought to go public with examples and rebuttals. If they don't do this, it stands to reason that it's because they can't do so without hurting their own story. No. I have never done that. I would never do that. Because I don't think that "all of the tapes" should be released.

I didn't think that "all of the tapes should be released" to Tucker Carlson. To his absolutely minimal credit, I think that McCarthy actually did not do that in point of fact. I get the impression that McCarthy allowed conditional access, or else he handed over copies, with the express understanding that Capitol Police would grant approval before anything was aired.

I'm not taking a position that now, for something like my own unstated reasons, the video should be released. I am saying that it is corrupt, nonsensical, inexplicable bullshit that Tucker Carlson alone has access. I don't much care if CBS, CNN, ABC, et al, get the video. But I definitely don't want there to be a Tucker Carlson exclusive. If Fox gets it, they all should get it. So yes I do want all of media to get what Tucker Carlson was given. And that is why I want other media to have the video.

And really, nobody should get the video unconditionally. I think that there are legitimate security concerns. Mostly because the Capitol P.D. Chief, and all of Congressional leadership from both sides seem to understand that there are legitimate security concerns.

Dem persecutor indictments? Really?

Like the Mueller indictments of the Russia hackers? You believed those were legit. The message boards of conservatives, rightly scoffed, because those indictments would never be tested in front of a Judge. In our system of adversarial justice, an indictment is meaningless. Even less meaningless when the feds do it to Russia entities. Knowing they would be safe from challenge.
But low and behold, one lone Russian entity appeared on the appointed day to answer the indictment.
Mueller promptly asked for a continence, to prepare a case. The Judge explained to the rookie Mueller, that the big boys understand filing an indictment means the Govt is ready for trial. Mueller withdrew the charges.

Garland cant indict Trump. Because that put Trump in front of a judge. Trump gets to demand Brady material. Hard to when there is none, or, it was gained illegally.
The Manhattan case is the same way. The DA is using an iffy legal theory at best. An indictment will expose exactly expose a crazed DA.

5 weeks of HD quality video compressed takes about 1TB of drive space. That's video of mostly non-changing background thus allowing for high-levels of compression. So about 120 hours of HD = 1TB. That's at least 333TB of data, except those 40,000 hours are of a very active background with lots of movement, so probably well over 400TB of data. Linear Tape-Open (LTO) storage would be a reasonable means for storing the data. For certain, transferring 400TB of data is not effortless.

Not stated - but I assume, if all the tapes were released you could draw a definitive map of the inside of the capital- which could aid someone who was really planning an attack on the capital. As it was the capital police had Carlson blur one of the doors. On the other hand, showing all the empty hallways would also show how much or how little of the capital was actually breached.

Just to add to my previous comment, the Tucker Carlson team also didn’t review all 40000 hours. They were provided with a program that sifted out all the footage without people in it. Carlson also asked for facial recognition software to sift through the tapes but was denied that. BTW this is from what I remember. I tried to find the original show from March 6 but was unsuccessful.

Yeah, I couldn't follow this either. Why not just make the tapes available, if you're afraid to just release them? Are there really major security reasons not to just release them anyhow?

Sorry for the misspelling - the capital legislative body of the US is the US Capitol.

The claim of damage to security by release of the “digitally stored computer readable video representations”, or “tapes” is interesting. In past spy cases the government has decided not to prosecute because release of information in the trial would damage national security, so the spy went free.

Here, the government decided to go to trial, so all the evidence should have been exposed, there was an affirmative decision by the government that prosecution was a greater good than damage to security. So let it all out to the public. No one should say that the video should be kept hidden. It should not have been hidden since the first trial.

From the QAnon Shaman case, it looks like the excuse was that Congress (meaning Pelosi) only gave the DOJ what they wanted to give them, and as a separate branch of the government, couldn’t force them to give up more, so they only provided the defense what they had, which, as noted, had been cherry picked by Pelosi’s people. And because the prosecution didn’t have access to the video, it wasn’t Brady material. Or that was their theory. Sounds a lot like LawFare to me, slicing, dicing, and rearranging evidence, statutes, and case law, to get the desired result, even if it means gross deprivation of civil rights - likely on the Dems’ part, more a feature, than a bug. Congress, under Pelosi, could send recommendations for (highly political) prosecutions to the DOJ, with as much or as little cherry picked evidence as they wanted, the prosecutors could use that evidence, and deny the defense exonerating evidence because Congress didn’t give it to them, and they couldn’t compel Congress to do so. Too bad, so sad.

Legally, Constitutionally, and morally, what should happen is that the courts should have dismissed the charges when faced with this sort of very obvious Brady violation. Congress and the DOJ were working together here, with the DOJ choosing to use the cherry picked evidence to indict these MAGA criminals. I seriously doubt if the current, Republican House majority is going to get the same reception for their criminal referrals of Democrats to the DOJ. The problem is that the DC federal courts, and esp the District Courts, are deep in the DC swamp. Sure, the Shaman’s judge is extremely experienced - he has been involved as a federal judge in high profile cases for decades. But he always seems to side with the swamp. It’s the US Government prosecuting these 1/6 defendants, and they shouldn’t be able to get away with denying evidence because the political Legislative Branch denied the Executive branch Brady information, when they started the prosecutions with criminal referrals.

Bingo. The government is free to refuse to allow the Brady evidence on the gourds of "national security". But the only allowed response to that is "no prosecution."

Every single person at the DoJ involved in these cases needs to be fired. Every judge who hasn't reversed all those cases and freed everyone previously "convicted", by the time the GOP takes over in 2025, should be impeached.

It only takes 50% in the House to impeach. No, we're not going to get the 2/3 vote to remove them from office. But every single one, starting with Royce Lamberth, should be forced to watch the TuCo video, then have their statements / actions read to them, then forced to justify why they didn't reverse every single conviction / guilty plea / etc
