Writes Maureen Dowd in "Scranton Joe Is Ready to Go" (NYT).
But just when it seemed as though Biden’s best days were behind him, Barack Obama chose him for a running mate, seeking foreign policy experience....
Obama shoved Biden aside for Hillary, which turned out to be a huge mistake that resulted in the execrable Trump. After being treated dismissively by the Obama team, Biden, Rocky-like, finally won the presidency, nearly half a century after he first talked about it. After that slog, he’s not about to kiss it away because some polls and pundits fret about his age. He thinks he’s doing great. There’s a spring in his step because he feels that he has outwitted the dimwitted Republicans....
Hillary thought she could win in 2016 with the new Democratic coalition of minorities, the elite and students. She refused to give a speech at Notre Dame and never bothered to go to Wisconsin. Wisconsin was Biden’s first stop Wednesday in his post-State of the Union blitz...."

handsome? trouble IS: we have eyes, we can See how he looked.
I'll give you that he was young, in 1974 (fifty years ago)
The title quote starts lying at the second word. Joe has never look more than average. NTTAWWT
Biden certainly has a tragic fate. To be the worst president in American history.
"Spring in his step". These Pulitzer Prize winning journalists notice things about the President that we lesser mortals fail to note.
Well, as a relatively unknown in 1974 he likely appeared ready.
Been a long downhill slide ever since.
"There’s a spring in his step"
Now THAT'S funny! Have you seen him walk recently?
"Gee, I wish I had paid for the NYT so I could read this column"- said no one.
Hey, say what you will, the fucker won! From his basement no less. I swear we must be living in some kind of simulation cooked up by the guys who wrote South Park. How else does Donald fucking Trump become the best president in the last God knows how many years, and get followed up by Joe "coal miners son" Biden? I'm rendered nearly speechless.
I think Hunter has a shot at this point!
So, the 'handsome young senator' understood why he was a hot commodity, eh? After poison pen articles by the dozen for GWB and Donald Trump, Dowd turns her adoring gaze to Crazy Uncle Joe. How does anybody carry water for the Legacy Main Stream Media while maintaining any self-respect? What happens when Dowd stands too close to Jennifer Rubin at a New York cocktail party, one wonders?
That SOB Biden will get re-elected in 2024. Should he...I say no.
A factoid to remember is that senator Biden won three senate elections in tough times.
1972 - Nixon won 49 states and Biden defeated an incumbent.
1978 - Midterm of Carter presidency.
1984 - Reagan won 49 states.
Biden reminds me of Tom Hayden from the Godfather. He looks bland, but he is devilishly/cunningly politically smart.
And calling Biden handsome....no. Sympathetic character because of family tragedy....yes.
But if those 2 things were connected to an R powerful leader, the words would be different and less favorable.
He [BIDEN] thinks he’s doing great.
Biden also thinks he was the brightest law student in his class—on academic scholarship no less. What amazes me is that anyone else with an IQ above room temperature would agree with him.
"Wisconsin was Biden’s first stop Wednesday in his post-State of the Union blitz...."
...where he addressed a crowd of tens. Granted, not exactly a campaign stop, but not exactly auspicious. Some blitz.

I have a personal stake in this. I no longer have to be embarrassed shout having James Buchanan in my family tree.
Or at least not as embarrassed
John Henry
She lost me at "handsome."
Look at that pic - and many others of the same vintage; he always has the same toothy, fivehead, doofus look that he has today. The teeth were just real.
I think Hunter has a shot at this point!
Yes. Such is the power of the media narrative for nice White lady suburban housewives and party loyalty for the 45% who always vote Democrat.
Have we ever had a senator, of any party, who was even a halfway decent president?
Can someone explain to me why so many people think senators are logical candidates for the oval?
John Henry
More like "where he addressed a crowd of Democratic Loyalists numbering in the tens"
By his own bragadocio his performance declined.
“In the first year of the law school, I decided I didn’t want to be in law school and ended up in the bottom two-thirds of my class,” he continued. “And then I decided to stay, went back to law school, and in fact ended up in the top half of my class.
Of course, this was an easily provable lie. He actually graduated 76 out of 85.
Not particularly bright.
John Henry
Reading this, it only slowly dawned on me that it wasn't intended as a parody.
Bad judgment is usually what I expect from Maureen Dowd, but the level of delusion here is breathtaking.
1974
Biden is America’s Queen Elizabeth. He’s been in Washington longer than most Americans have been alive. He may not have her decency, but he more than makes up for it with his lack of understanding ofthe lives of his people.
"The magazine compared him to 'Robert Redford’s Great Gatsby'"
Even then, the MSM were peddling Dem propaganda. The difference now is that we deplorables have more ways to call BS. The MSM are offended and have doubled down. The rubes should no be allowed to believe their lying eyes. Be a Havel greengrocer, or else.
I'll be the last to detract from anyone pushing Biden as the Dem's best candidate for 2024.
Big crowds in Wisconsin.
The people are clamoring for Union mob boss protections and union dues that act as another tax on their income.
There’s a spring in his step because he feels that he has outwitted the dimwitted Republicans...
Dowd fancies herself a wit, perhaps the "spring in his step" is her jejune notion of irony.
Hillary thought she could win in 2016 with the new Democratic coalition of minorities, the elite [sic] and students. She refused to give a speech at Notre Dame and never bothered to go to Wisconsin.
So, the Russia-Russia-Russia thing has grown rancid at last. Now the Hildebeast owes her shellacking to hubris. How sopholcean. Though foxed and musty Dowd's ancient CliffsNotes still come in handy, by the gods. (Maybe Clinton was under Putin's hypnotic influence when she spurned the cheese-addled yokels.)
Maureen has no interest in looking at Biden family corruption.
she is just another paid hack(D)
I think the comparison to Gatsby is apt. They both made fortunes through shady means.
And so the country will be subjected to an 80 year-old man running against in some form or fashion a 76-77 year old man?
Is that the best we can do? What happened to fresh?JFK was a U.S. Senator but he had that "fresh" vibe. So did Reagan and he was much older- but still fresh. And Carter did. So did Clinton. And Obama.
President Biden running seems to be in some part a reaction to President Trump running. Both are stale. Like stale bread.
This is so sad. We enable staleness to perpetuate.
There’s a spring in his step because he feels that he has outwitted the dimwitted Republicans...
On the other hand, from Dowd's non-spring-chicken POV, anyone not actually dead has a spring in his step.
Well, I’m ready for him to go, too.
“ is devilishly/cunningly politically smart.”
Whoever is running him is, he’s a moron who can’t shut his yap to suppress a brag.
“We can, and we will end that pipeline.”
“We have the biggest voter fraud operation in history.”
Interesting that a guy running for president refused the pre-Super Bowl interview if it was going to be a hard news reporter. How long can he go, if he is running, dodging questions about nord stream?
I'm less bothered that everyone would think that Biden was handsome than that anyone would think he's smart--which opinion I still hear from time to time.
A certain low cunning, undeniably. And any POTUS as assured of support from the Organs and MSMNBCNNPBSLGBBQ as Biden would have a spring in his step and a smirk on his face.
I just wanted to chime in as a born and bred Blue Hen that I never, from his first election when I was in third grade, to my first (and last) voting for him in 1984, to suffering through his UD Commencement Address in 1987, until about 2018, hear anyone describe Joe Biden as "Scranton Joe."
Have we ever had a senator, of any party, who was even a halfway decent president?
I don't recall one either.
When you cook the vote Biden can be President. When you cook the vote a 35 year old plate of potato salad can be President…
Forget about the spring in his step. Does he have a perfectly creased pant?
Florida was Biden's second stop after his SOTU Show. He's not winning Florida. And I'm not sure he'd win Wisconsin if he was propped up at a candidate again. His visits mean nothing. No one showed up (again) to see him except a few union people who had to and were paid to show up.
The last time Joe Biden had a new idea was the last time Maureen Dowd had a column that was any different than any of her last 300. And it may have been that column she wrote about Joe Biden back in 1974.
How else does Donald fucking Trump become the best president in the last God knows how many years, and get followed up by Joe "coal miners son" Biden?
Trump was the first president in a long time (Maybe since Coolidge) who understood economics. Bill Safire once wrote a novel about a president who had a PhD in Economics. What we have now is a Democrat Party, run by nobodies, which operates under the fake ideology of Modern Monetary Theory.
Put simply, modern monetary theory decrees that such governments do not rely on taxes or borrowing for spending since they can print as much money as they need and are the monopoly issuers of the currency. Since their budgets aren’t like a regular household’s, their policies should not be shaped by fears of a rising national debt.
In other words, we will never repay any of the national debt. Just print more money. Inflation, here we go !
Whoever is running him is, he’s a moron who can’t shut his yap to suppress a brag.
That's been a feature of Biden's since he first became a senator, as demonstrated in this 1974 interview (linked in Dowd's column, surprisingly).
One of the classic Biden moments in that interview comes when he names his three all-time favorite senators, only two of which ever served in the Senate.
That was hilarious! Thanks for sharing it.
Every evil/inhumane suggestion by a Lib/Prog is always "taken out of context".
Face it Maureen, he's not going to date you so remove the unattractive knee pads.
Putin prevented Hillary from visiting Wisconsin in 2016, thus stealing the election for Trump.
Biden reminds me of Tom Hayden from the Godfather. He looks bland, but he is devilishly/cunningly politically smart.
I'm inclined to think the voters of Delaware are stupid.
She says there’s a spring in Biden’s step? He’s turned into a stiff-legged shambling old wreck in the last 4 or 5 years. Yes he did have a spring in his step back in the Obama days but that is long gone now. Besides Maureen Down is certifiable batshit crazy. Good God!
Old and slow said: "Hey, say what you will, the f*^*#r won!"
Ah,no.
hear anyone describe Joe Biden as "Scranton Joe."
Why, it's almost as if Delaware doesn't want him!
Why do I think that some senate seats are safe? Safe, as in naked-boy-or-dead-girl-in-bed safe. Safe, as in the votes never really get counted.
from the 1974 article..
How did an unknown attorney with only two years’ experience as a county councilman manage to topple Delaware’s firmly entrenched 63-year-old Republican Senator Caleb Boggs? Boggs, a two-term Congressman, two-term governor, and two-term Senator, wanted to retire in 1972; President Nixon persuaded him to run for a third term, suggesting that he resign after a year.
i LOVE when people answer their Own Questions..
HOW did Biden topple Boggs? Boggs WANTED to retire and played no part in the race. Biden wins by default
more from the article..
he seemed to enjoy remembering aloud. He was the handsome football hero. My wife was the brains
“My beautiful millionaire wife was a conservative Republican before she met me..
detractors accuse him of shrouding himself in widower’s weeds, of dredging up his late wife in every speech. But Biden prides himself ..
He dresses rich. “I’m a suit-and-tie kind of guy,” he says. “I’ve been this way all my life. I even wore a tie in college
He defines politics as power. “And, whether you like it or not, young lady,” he says, leaning over his desk to shake a finger at me, “us cruddy politicians can take away that First Amendrnent of yours if we want to..”
I can look you straight in the eye and say that I have no present or future plans of getting married.
“There used to be great Senators here who really made a difference, men like Patrick Henry, Daniel Webster, and Henry Clay.
I'm not a Godfather expert, but I am a pedant, and I believe the character mentioned earlier was Tom Hagen (not Hayden). The Kraut-Mick, as Don Vito called him.
The way I remember it, before covid, Trump was a shoo-in for a second term. All the polls reflected it. Biden and Harris were sacrificial candidates, just to have somebody on the ticket, because nobody more qualified wanted the spot. Their being unqualified didn't matter because they were't expected to win. Their nomination paid off political favors. Now the whole country is suffering because neither one of them knows what they are doing.

You sure aren't a Godfather expert. It was the movie producer who refused to give Johnny Fontaine a part who called Tom a Kraut-Mick.
Obama didn't "shove Biden aside" in 2016. He had to honor the deal he made on the threshold of the Dem convention in 2008 to avoid a floor fight: Hillary gave him her Superdelegates and in exchange she was guaranteed the next nomination.
Why else does anyone think the DNC would've scaled-thumbed the hell out of the primaries in 2016 against Bernie? Remember how they were giving her more delegates for losing states that he got for winning? Or how they were screwing him on use of email lists, etc.? It's all so obviously documented, I can only guess the MSM hasn't put the story together because they don't want to make waves.
When she proved a dud and failure, they had to bring Biden back because none of the losers they had looking for the 2020 nomination were remotely capable of appealing to anything outside each of their narrow constituencies, much less beating The Donald, for all his known faults and media-jaundiced reputation by then. That was all widely noted at the time, too.
Dowd is both obvious and untalented when it comes to historical revisionism. If this is par for the NYT course and its readership nods along with this buffoonery, it's really fallen. It's as though they figure their readers don't remember what happened yesterday morning - and astonishingly, its readers lap it all up like happy kittens.
What's up with that?
I stand corrected about Kraut-Mick.
1 for 2. I'll take it.
