It seems his office is incompatible with his health at this time.
If I were his spouse, I'd try to be supportive. But I would also suggest he resign.
Depression in the form of stroke damage and an inability to process external input.
My father is much more lucid and cognizant of the world than Fetterman.
He goes through periods where he understands what is going on but his brain tells him that it is all wrong and he gets disoriented. He is still all there but the world just seems wrong.
Fetterman is much more damaged than my father.
He is a fucking invalid and the people that support him being a senator are evil exploitative shitheads who should all be removed from the gene pool so that we have a better future as a species.
Clinical depression: feel bad for the guy based open personal experience. Chances are he never would have been elected if Trump had not interfered and backed a carpet bagger. One more reason why Trump should not be the R nominee again.
Why is he telling the whole world about his private health condition?
And why is he depressed? He won!
Seriously, he should have withdrawn from the race after his stroke. It wasn't fair to him, his family or the people of PA.
When you think Fetterman is a loser with a capital L, just remember his Senate seat was perfectly winnable by a Republican until Donald Trump got the bright idea of importing a friend of his from New Jersey or Turkey (I don’t remember which).
How could he possibly know?? Isn't lightheaded a constant state for Senator Fetterman??
Depression is, they say, common among stroke victims struggling to regain former physical & cognitive abilities. Similar experience in my family with depression post-stroke. I wish the Senator a quick recovery.
"checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center"
Was he actually able to do it "himself"?
"to receive treatment for clinical depression"
You mean, like, that doc assuring us that he was capable lied to us? The Dem voters of PA actually sent an invalid to DC? Say it ain't so!
Did the PA Dem PTB view him as a placeholder all along, to be replaced by a proper lefty of the governor's choosing?
It sounds like a heroic effort. I have great admiration for him as he steps up to this immense challenge
It sounds like this bunch of motherfuckers would never let him drop out even if he wanted to. It’s a Senate seat for chrissakes!
Fetterman looks about him at what is going on in the Democratic-held Senate. He thinks "I made all this possible by ruining my health forever." He checks himself into Walter Read suffering from massive depression. Why is this hard to understand?
Democrats aren't particularly worried about the Senate seat, since the governor of Pennsylvania is a Democrat who would appoint a Democrat as successor to Fetterman. And if, as noted above by Earnest Prole, the Republicans decide to nominate another Trumpist in the special election, the seat would remain in Democratic hands.
Chances are he never would have been elected if Trump had not interfered and backed a carpet bagger. One more reason why Trump should not be the R nominee again.
I'm sure the GOP establishment would have picked a winner just like the did in picking McSally or Loffler. Or O'Dea.
Sean Parnell dropped out of the PA race when his hag of an ex-wife went after him and his kids. Oz was a latecomer. Parnell would have been a good one.
Anyone sincerely caring about him would not have let him continue on the election path. It’s a shame and he’s paying the price, along with the state of PA. I hope he resigns.
I'm going to laugh and laugh when he resigns, only for Shapiro to appoint someone other than Fetterman's evil, twisted narcissist of a wife as the new Senator.
Dave Begley wrote "It wasn't fair to him, his family or the people of PA." Two out of three ain't bad. It isn't fair to him or the people of PA. But he's in this position because his family, in the persona of his wife, pushed him into it for the greater glorification of herself. Or themself, who know what the progressive-pronoun-of-the-day is.
Fetterman’s wife, Gisele, posted a separate tweet stating:
The only reason i married this LOSER, was for his money, and his political position; Now that Jackass isn't going to make it 2 months in the damn job! The Governor, had BETTER appoint ME!!
{it's Possible, that this quote might be taken out of context.. or possibly just made up}
The clinically depressed have a hard time finding the energy and hope to engage in day-to-day life. I wish him a successful treatment plan and recovery.
Is depression a disease that needs medical treatment? Asking for 200 journalist.
Fetterman may eventually become the greatest U.S. senator since Daniel Webster. I’m personally skeptical of that, but it is unknowable (in the future) and subjective. What is objectively true is that he has some pretty severe physical and mental challenges, including difficulty in communicating. I don’t believe he’s up to the challenges, and may well stroke someday soon, but it’s his call, and we can only hope he does what’s best for his constituents and the country.
This is hard to believe......he looked so healthy during the campaign!
I am from PA. Control of the senate was the issue. They hid his condition until the debate. The Democrats had printed materials to turn in the mail in ballots on the day prior to the debate. They knew he couldn't make it, but they wanted to win more. There was no concern for his health and well being.
Clinical Depression! I blame Climate Change!
What's Fetterman's pronoun, "Scarecrow"?
"I'd unravel ev'ry riddle for my
Individdle
In trouble or in pain
With the thoughts that you'll be thinkin'
You could be another Lincoln
If you only had a brain."
Senator Feinstein isn't getting any better, but her staff thinks they can hold out (and roll her out to vote) for 2 more years. What about Fetterman?
I'm commenting on strokes without regard to politics.
Stroke victims often never recover. key portions of the brain are destroyed by leaking blood, and they can never grow back. The other shoe might drop in a month, in a year, or in a few years. I sense the worst here, per the public announcement of a rapid re-hospitalization and use of the taboo word 'depression.'
I hope he's able to get help. With the right medication, he can get past this, but he also should et some help from a qualified therapist. I hope everything works out well for him.
Healthcare is so dam expensive in this country... there's no telling what people might do to get some. 🤔
They should have nominated a dead person and then appoint any replacement they want. This one is going to hang on, and Republicans are going to bore everybody by saying how much they care for the guy's happiness.
I'm not saying a high colonic would cure him. I'm saying it couldn't hurt.
If I were his spouse, I'd try to be supportive. But I would also suggest he resign.
You do know who would get the job if he quit, right...?
all according to the plan. Who they crappin?
I'd be depressed too if I got a plum job and then I couldn't do the one fun thing people privileged enough to get the plum job, actually enjoy; talking and talking some more.
Who was John Fetterman before his stroke? I haven't figured out how he made it from being the mayor of a tiny town to Lt.Governor of the state. Particularly given he apparently didn't show up to work all that often.
When we are bombarded with messages of diversity from all sides constantly, Pennsylvania elected a white guy with less work experience than some 30 year olds I know to Lt Governor and then Senator. (I don't care for OZ and understand why he lost to Fetterman, but don't know how Fetterman got either nomination to start.)
Clinical long term depression would explain Fetterman's life before his stroke. I wish him well personally but would not expect a quick recovery.
What did former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich tell federal undercover agents while trying to fill Obama's vacant senate seat??
"I've got this thing, and it's fucking golden."
Clinical depression is common. Hospitalization for clinical depression is not. So it is either extreme (danger to himself) or he requires stroke related care beyond what can be provided at home.
First, as long as Fetterman - or his proxy - can cast a vote in favor of whatever Chuck Schumer wants, what does it matter? The Great thing about Democrats, is they don't care. All that matters is following the party line.
Second, I'd like to remind people that John "Maverick" McCain, stayed in office, despite living in Arizona and getting nonstop Chemo therapy and medical treatment for almost 1 year. So Fetterman can deal with a little "Depression" - if thats what it really is.

I'm thinking that was the plan all along.
As a psychiatrist expert witness informed me one time, "clinical depression" isn't a clinical term. The clinical term is "Major Depressive Disorder."
And I'm completely unconcerned about this. Fetterman beat Oz and made sure that there was one less MAGA vote in the Senate. Mission Accomplished! I hope he gets better, soon, and I expect that he will.
I don't expect that we will soon find out about what Trump's 2019 mystery hospitalization was for. Or what his 2022 mystery hospitalization was for. That presidential e.r. visit was a lot more worrying than a visit involving one of a hundred senators.
Like caligulas horse
Geez Chuck,
You really are a total asshole.
And pretty crazy to boot.
The PA governor is a Dem, right? So Fetterman can quit and be replaced by a Dem appointed by the Dem gov, right? Or does PA have some more complicated way of naming a replacement to a Senator who leaves? I would think that Dem leadership would want to ease Fetterman out, not just for his own health, but for the health of the Senate and the prospects of retaining that seat in another 6 years.
Being a Senator is very demanding. Meetings, meetings, meetings all day long even when the Senate is in session. Senators will get pulled off the floor to have a quick meeting. It is constant. Then at night there’s dinners, receptions and more meetings. Along the way you have to study bills, read reports and try to stay up. According to the NYT, Senator Fetterman has trouble understanding what he his is told or hears. This would make the meetings extremely difficult and frustrating. In addition, the staff is keeping him away from reporters and other members. It’s difficult to see this getting any better, it’s more likely to worsen. He should be taking care of himself and in some type of rehabilitation. It’s a very sad situation.
He had a pretty bad stroke and is suffering from what seem to be fairly severe auditory processing deficits, as well as speech deficits that have been evident since the campaign. He must find it intensely frustrating. My stroke was much more minor, and my
speech deficits from the start have been much more apparent to me than anyone else, yet I still find every word that doesn't quite come out as intended incredibly frustrating and disheartening. "Depression" could be a good excuse to avoid the public a while and get the rest and speech or other occupational therapy he skipped out on in service to his Party. I hope he gets it.
"... checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Wednesday night [and I might add on the taxpayer's dime]"
Always good to get good quality lawmakers, heh?
Chuck - you're a fraud. Go F yourself.
Amazing. We elected someone literally unfit for office. It could have been a monkey and the democrats would have installed him. Much like potus
We are no longer a serious nation.
"severe clinical depression" according to his office's press release (emphasis mine)
Exactly as his wife has foreseen.
Trust Republican Chuck to not care that a mindless Democrat is helping his fellow fascists to remain in power. It's not like we fought a world war awhile ago to prevent the same thing.
Trust Republican Chuck to not care that a mindless Democrat is helping his fellow fascists to remain in power.
There is not caring and there is celebrating.
Please note the difference.
This is, of course, all TRUMP'S FAULT!!!
Because Oz was so terribly, horribly bad and unqualified that the voters of PA had NO CHOICE but to vote for this absolute cartoon character joke of a candidate, who the Dems somehow put in the position of Lieutenant Governor, for US Senator.
Really?
And somehow Mr. Fetterman himself has no agency in any of this.
He could and should have dropped out a long time ago, and Dem Voters should have loudly protested that a candidate who couldn't even understand the questions enough to engage in a debate (and who was an unqualified joke before he had his stroke) shouldn't have asked for their vote.
And we are supposed to feel sorry for HIM? To bad--you made your bed.
(Depression is no joke--millions of people suffer from it. I feel sorry for those people, and I would feel sorry for Fetterman as a private citizen. But I'm having a real hard time mustering any real sympathy for this individual's current plight).
Also, as Ace said--I've seen that melon--there is nothing "light" about it.
"Dave Begley said...

Fuck the people of PA, they got what they wanted. But it's more than PA, he's not a state senator, it's all of the USA.
You live in PA and vote dem, you get two senators - and one of them is Chuck Schumer.
He's depressed? Just imagine how the voters feel!
I expect the democrats of PA are ecstatic. Another Weekend at Bernie's mannequin that can be propped up with strings on his hands to make him vote yes/no on command. Right up their alley.
Uncle Festerman is exactly what the people who elected him deserve.
He'll probably have to stay in office to maintain the health insurance benefits.

What do I know? Nothing. What do I think I know? That people with access to capital, like say senators, can get all of the treatment for depression at home. So this inpatient stay seems very fishy to me.
The only way I know of for normal people to get put into inpatient for depression is when they are deemed to be a credible danger to themselves. Meaning that if it really is depression, I seriously doubt that he was the one that admitted himself.
But like I said, what do I know? Nothing.
