"Descriptions of 'Spare' as 'pure chaos,' TMI or the lament of a privileged White man oversimplify the book...."

"Harry’s memoir sweeps in: one man’s singular journey from schoolboy to soldier to married father; a love letter to a lost mother, cast in the grief of a 12-year-old boy; an indictment of a family with resources to care for two wounded children — but no apparent will or concern to do so; a love-struck man’s celebration of his wife. 'Spare' is no literary masterpiece (for your own sake, skip the multi-chapter talk of his frostbitten todger). In time, Harry might regret sharing so much.... Harry accuses his stepmother, Camilla, soon to be crowned queen, of spreading negative reports about him amid efforts to improve her public image. He recounts speaking to his brother about their father’s efforts to promote himself at their expense. Think about that. A lot of Americans who were tiring of Harry and Meghan will likely find elements of Harry’s story to respect or even lament....."

Writes Autumn Brewington, in "Post Elizabeth: To understand Prince Harry’s book, you need to know 5 things" (WaPo).

About that todger (don't tell me what to skip!):

AND: Here's a hilarious parody of the book.

ALSO: If you click through to that Jack Posobiec, you'll see that he adds" "I warned you about what Simp Trapping does to a man/I warned you all."

That warning sounds creepy as hell, but it got me reading the "Simp" article at Wikipedia, and I don't regret it. Highlights:

In July 2020, the official Twitter account for Archie Comics said that it would permanently ban people from its YouTube channel for comments calling the comics' main character, Archie Andrews, a simp. The A.V. Club opined that, while it was "pretty safe to say that Archie Andrews is, quite simply, the simpiest of the simps." The Twitter post was likely an attempt at exploiting the Streisand effect for viral marketing....

In September, users of Reddit created a pledge called "No Simp September"... Participation in "No Simp September" required posters to abstain from upvoting women's photos, watching pornography, and "giving money to online sex workers", including "e-girls."...

While the term initially denoted a specific kind of sycophant, upon achieving broad popularity, it began to be used more loosely.... Hayley Soen writes at The Tab that "the simp has come to take the place of the softboi", describing him as "a boy who is a romantic failure [...] definitely the type of boy you'd tell the girls is 'a little too nice'", and "probably doesn't even have a lads' group chat"; Soen writes that the term is used "sometimes to describe even the bare minimum level of respect between a man and a woman".
According to the Evening Standard, while "the term could also have some value if it undermines a culture of stringing people along emotionally", it also had "potentially offensive connotations." In The New York Times, Ezra Marcus and Jonah Bromwich describe the term as a misogynist insult, one which "expresses discomfort with equality when it comes to gender, and offers a simple way to dismiss the people causing that discomfort."
Anna María of The Daily Dot writes that while the term is mostly used "ironically and without misogynistic undertones", "it doesn't take much to be called a simp" in some anti-feminist spaces, and that "everything from pining after a crush to actually respecting women could be considered simping." Taylor writes that the idea of the "simp" most often "seems to be a guy who simply treats women well, or just not like trash" and is "just another scapegoat for MGTOW misogyny."

Well...I've managed to scrupulously avoid any mention of Harry or Meghan(?) or any of them for years now. But I did open that audio. And now I'm damaged. And clearly, he's damaged. We're all damaged here, Ma'am.

What are we calling Harry now?

I propose Prince Todger.

God this is pathetic.

Harry is a failed scion.

He would be an average professor or a bad plumber if he didn't win the parental lottery.

thanks for the link. that truly was hilarious. The Royals need to strip him of his titles, they're on their way to being the British Khardasians.

Jake म्हणाले...

It's easy to dismiss him. It's easy to say he should STFU and go away. Frankly, he's got enough money to do so. But, I've never walked in his shoes. And, even if he tried to go away, he would be constantly followed and harassed by photographers and other paparazzi. It's got to suck. Frankly, I think, if he ends up taking down the Crown. So be it. It's been a long time coming anyway.

No. It's just a overexposed puke fest at this point.

My advice is "Harry, enjoy all the money. You've got a hot wife who you will eventually get sick of. Fly your private jets. Nobody cares. But please STFU man. Especially with your global warming bullshit and cliche wokeness. The ONLY reason you get any sympathy is because you are your mother's son and we felt bad for you when she died.

We think your Dad is a dickhead too. For that you have our sympathy too. So did your mother.

You left the Royal family for your own good reasons. Bravo. We can understand that. Now, you don't have to be in the spotlight anymore. Let it go. You'll always be famous. We don't care. And if you want to be dominated by your publicity seeking wife...go ahead man. But for the rest of us, can you get her to STFU too, please?"

Wince म्हणाले...

Wow, that is a super cringey story in the audio book clip. Do royals not understand TMI?!

I still don't care about Harry. However, his life would make a funny farcical comedy. It may be hard to top the damage he's done to himself, as he's well on his way to doing a Mike Tyson or Britney Spears or Kanye West level of self-satire.

Beth B म्हणाले...

What language police both understand and brilliantly misunderstand is what I call a central doctrine of language:

Words do not have meanings. (So much as) they have uses.

So the word "simp" was initially and remains most commonly used to mean "a male who grovels like a sycophant hoping it will be a way to to win an attractive woman's attention and romantic interest". Frankly I haven't seen it used to indicate "anti-feminist" unless "anti-feminist" is being (ahem) used to label anyone who doesn't adhere to radical feminist ideology.

Therefore we must ban the word altogether. Because it's sometimes used in ways we don't like. I'm sick to death of these little tyrants.

Tyrus on Gutfeld hit the truth last night. Harry didn't write this, Megan did. What husband has access to, much less would include, the text war between his wife and sister-in-law. The whole tone is female sniping.

JK Brown म्हणाले...

Also, the whole "spare" thing is being presented as he was spare parts. This smacks of the level of intelligence meghan has shown.

I have referred to myself, a second son, as the spare. Not as in spare parts, but as in the one who rises if the first dies. This is common in royalty, aristocracy. After all, with no male heir, others start to get the idea they have a claim to the throne.

In the 19th century, the 2nd, and subsequent sons of British aristocracy, went out to be Colonial officials and such.

Jake म्हणाले...

So many people have such strong, negative opinions about this. Sounds like they need to pay attention to something else. Harry and family are seeking attention and you don't like it? How about don' give them any attention? Ignore it. Close your eyes and ears to stories about him. Don't buy his book. If there is no attention to be gained, then it's impossible to seek that attention. I think many other people need to STFU too.

rcocean म्हणाले...

Yeah, no one should ever get annoyed at anything.

I always try to adopt that air of superiority about it when others do. Hey, why are all YOU people getting upset? I also exagagerate a little and say they are VERY upset. But I'm not. Cause i'm so above it all. Plus I have lots of time on my hands, in Moms basement, to complain about other people and to comment on a subject I don't care about.

See superior tone, unlimited time. The other thing I do, is run about the internet telling people they're talking about boring things. I find that fascinating.

Did these two grifters (The spare and gold-digger) move to the U.S. because they thought the press would be better given their friendship with Oprah and company? In Britain, William and Kate were getting all of the major attention after the glitter of the two grifters' wedding was over. If better press was their goal, they were thinking short-term.

These two demand their privacy as they run to the nearest camera at every opportunity (most staged), put on Netflix specials exposing their most personal interactions with family, and Harry writes a book demeaning almost every family member, which includes details that can easily be proven false. Now, the Brits despise them even more and their positive rating in the U.S. is dropping rapidly. In the U.S., you can get glowing reviews one day, and then be tossed under the bus the next. The grifters failed to take that into consideration. I think the novelty of having a couple of royals from Britain in the neighborhood is starting to wear off.

Oh, c'mon. We need a story create tabloid headlines as we go through the grocery line or visit the dentist. There have been three good ones: Elizabeth Taylor and and and ; Brad Pitt and and ; Princess Di, Charles, and Camilla. Now we've got Harry and Meghan. The tiara pull. Two brothers scuffle and one calls his therapist, "William pushed me, waaa, he gets to be king, waaaa." And the todger story which will never be surpassed. And yet, dare I say never? When Meghan and Harry turn on each other fighting for custody of the kids? may we not expect a still lower level? I think so.

Of course, Althouse chooses to discuss misogyny and ignore the Elephant in the room.

White Boy Privilege. Her crowd has demonized White Males to the point that they've shamed little boys into castrating themselves out of the delusion that they can escape their gender.

Can you imagine the reaction if we had shamed young women to such an extent that they were mutilating their labia?

You would think a woman who's 2 attempts to troll her male readers backfired into meltdowns that resulted in her shutting down comments would have evolved. But the blind spots resulting from her anti-male bigotry remain, so we're going get paragraphs that suggest misogyny in the typical vague subjective unfalsifiable method.

I used to practice Family Law in California and here is my prediction based on behavior I have seen before: omce Meghan thinks the trajectory of Harry's profitability is peaking or just past, she files for divorce. In fact, I would be very surprised if she does not already have an exit strategy in place, to include consultations already with top LA attorneys while Harry is on the road promoting his book, thus "conflicting" them out to prevent him from hiring any for the divorce (although my money is on Laura Wasser representing Meghan). Hell, in this new era of Zoom, she doesn't even have to leave the compound, thus avoiding having the "paps" see her going into a West LA office building.

I can see the appeal of royalty. My life was a mostly futile struggle to acquire wealth and status, and , looking back, I can't help but think it was a waste of time. It must be really cool to be born into not just wealth and status but apex wealth and status. You don't have to demonstrate worth or talent to justify your existence. The point of your existence is your existence....I can 't help but think that my life would have been so much more pleasant if I had been born into the royal family, but apparently they have their problems.
