"The Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared the way for a congressional committee to examine Donald Trump’s tax returns..."

"... denying without comment the former president’s last-ditch effort to extend a legal battle that has consumed Congress and the courts for years. The justices’ brief order means that the Treasury Department may quickly hand over six years of tax records from Trump and some of his companies to the House Ways and Means Committee."

WaPo reports.

You no longer have to report illegal income, owing to the self-incrimination requirement. The bargain struck when the income tax was allowed was that no income tax information would go to agencies outside the IRS, so that self-incrimination didn't become incriminating.

Robert Marshall म्हणाले...

Not having any informed opinion on the merits of the claim that Congressional legislative oversight extends to Trump's tax returns, I will only say that when (not if) these tax returns are leaked to the media, someone should pay a very heavy price for that rat-f**king. And of course, that price will never be paid.

Our DC government is a mess!

They want to audit a return that has already been approved by the IRS???

Why would I want to negotiate my taxes with the IRS, and then realize the return will be scrutinized, without context, in the media?

This is a witch hunt. Can we see Pelosi's return??

Inga म्हणाले...

How sad for Trump, none of his SC picks came through for him. Well, that gives me hope.

Awesome. That means the GOP House can get the Biden Family tax returns as well. Right?

I'll bet Trump's are cleaner.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Fine by me. The new House, if the Republicans do indeed control it, should subpoena the tax records of the Pelosis, the Schumers, the Bidens, the Harris', the Obamas etc. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. It would be highly amusing to see the sudden changes of opinion on the Left about the efficacy of such political tactics.

Certainly clears the way for a Republican-majority Ways and Means committee to get access to Joe's and Hunter's tax returns.

Gusty Winds म्हणाले...

The Supreme Court is correct...

Congress should be able to access and publicize anybody's tax returns and leak them to the media. Then hold hearings on them. First behind closed doors with leaks. Then publicly with only selected portions available for the record.

Pelosi's return should be subpoenaed first day the Republicnas are in charge. Along with Joe and Hunter Biden's forms. They'd be a hoot. I imagine a fiction writer would never insert them into a novel because fiction has to be believable.

I, for one, look forward to illegally obtained documents being published by the press to once again be a necessary function in a free society. Not something that should be blocked or get you social media bans. Don't worry though. This will change once again if it impacts Democrats in a negative way.

RoseAnne म्हणाले...

Would that be the House Ways and Means Committee that is under Republican control in little more than a month?

As to Pelosi's return, why not? A precedent has been established.

Krumhorn म्हणाले...

The good news here is that this will be precedent for paybacks down the road. There are a number of Dem returns that should interesting to see. Let's start with the Clintons and their "foundation". And Bernie's. As a general rule, let's see any returns of those whose net worth has very substantially increased during their term in office. Like, for example, the Obamas.

That was then. Now we have a population of Ingas who have no idea of the law, but hate Trump. It was amusing when some IRS criminal leaked Trump's 1995 tax return to Mad Cow on MSDNC. She was crowing about her scoop until she realized he had paid $25 million in income tax.

Nowhere in the IRS tax code is there a provision that permits cheating. If you have income, you are required to report it and deductions are only those specifically named.

How many times did TFG tell the public that his taxes were under audit and he refused to publish them?

And you might find that Pelosi has published her tax return. Have you looked?

Military commanders are notorious for planning future wars by looking at their failings in the last war. Times change but their thinking becomes rigid and narrow, and thereby misses the mark. As of 2022, why should anyone care about rehashing what we all know? This as Trump loses support from Republican mega donors, and as he too comes across as fixated on the past.

Republicans proved unable to check themselves when impeaching Clinton in the 1990s -- he came across as a victim of Starr and partisan excess so his popularity increased. Trump's haters will also remain fixated on him for the rest of their lives, even as they self destruct.

To adapt Lady Macbeth, the Democratic Party will sleepwalk as they say "Out, damned Trump."
