"For about nine minutes, they watched a white, off-shoulder dress being sprayed onto Bella Hadid’s body."

"The substance — a patented spray-on fabric developed by a London-based company called Fabrican — looked like spider webs at first, until the fibrous layers thickened, instantly drying into a pebbled fabric and effectively mummifying the model.... The Parisian brand Coperni is named after the Renaissance mathematician and astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Founded in 2013, the brand is interested in fusing science, craft and fashion.... The dress could be taken off like any other tight, slightly stretchy one: a process of peeling off and shimmying out. It can be hung and washed, or put back into the bottle of its original solution to regenerate...."

Jessica Testa explains in the NYT.

The model was, reportedly, very cold, but when it was all over, she said, "I think that was the best moment of my life."

I've seen some commentary — I forget where — likening the spraying of the sticky white fibers to 2 men ejaculating. It made me wonder — is spider silk like semen? There is something called a sperm web. Britannica has this:

In male spiders the second pair of appendages (pedipalps) are each modified to form a complex structure for both holding sperm and serving as the copulatory organs. When the time for mating approaches, the male constructs a special web called the sperm web. The silk for it comes from two sources, the spinnerets at the end of the abdomen and the spigots of the epigastric silk glands located between the book lungs. A drop of fluid containing sperm is deposited onto the sperm web through an opening (gonopore) located on the underside of the abdomen. The male draws the sperm into his pedipalps in a process known as sperm induction. This may take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Sperm induction may occur before a male seeks a mate or after the mate has been located. If more than one mating occurs, the male must refill the pedipalps between copulations....

A male crab spider quickly and expertly wraps his intended mate with silk. Although the female is able to escape, she does not do so until mating has been completed....

Bella Hadid was able to escape, but she did not do so.

Heck no. She was having the best moment of her life, all almost 26 years of it. Her boyfriend understood, I'm sure. They've been dating about two years, per wikipedia, so he has heard a lot of stuff from her by now.

We all want to be part of our Star Trek future. Delicious food from a replicator and a garment from the magical wardrobe. If that's what Bella meant by "best moment" -- the chance to lead, to sense what our scifi like will look like -- then good for her.

O amazing world, that has such people in't, to re-coin a phrase.

Seventeen magazine, when I was fourteen (which was, I suspect, the average age of their readership - awesome branding), said that by the year 2000(!) there would be dip-in nail polish that would only stick to your nails, not your skin. I'm still waiting...

So THAT'S what they mean by that "spidey sense"...

I wonder what it's made of. The company's website fronts-and-centers their greenness (in particular in using propellants that don't deplete the ozone layer), but does not discuss the composition of the fabric itself.

I just think it's cool. But it helps to look good naked if you're going to wear a literally skin-tight garment, and not that many people can get away with that.

How does it know it's supposed to be a dress and not pants. Spray-on jeans is the effect usually aimed for.

Beasts of England म्हणाले...

I’ll remember to try that line in my next date. ‘No, seriously - just get nekkid and I’ll spray a dress on you!’

Seems very impractical. I suppose if it became the standard for clothing, we could all have a personal manikin to spray it on, and then wear the item after it dries.

The info about the spiders was much more interesting than the application of the dress.

No.

Designers will be flocking to apply this technique.

I figured cellophane or similar material around the legs and hips.

Not sure how stretchy it actually is which would affect how far your feet could be apart while it is applied.

Wearable Silly String is a fun concept. Hopefully Hadid will have many better events occurring in her life.

Silly String was involved in one of my funnest times in my life because we bought 30 cans for my son’s fourth birthday party and let the kids and adults go wild in our backyard. My mother-in-law had a blast. She passed away a few years later and this is how my son remembers her.

Spray painting a model = completely out of fashion ideas.
Which is fine - because fashion trends are ugly, silly, sad, uninspiring and depressing. Run-way shows are pathetic indulgences for the shallow celebrity set.

Fashion is gay dudes designing ugly bright colored ruffled puffy-shoulder toxic-dyed synthetic fabric Clown blouses.... for masses of robot women.
**The synthetic materials and fabrics come from a Chinese manufacturer. Don't look downstream, Madonna.

Anyone remember paper dresses from the 60s? You wore them once, maybe twice, and then threw them in the trash. They were supposed to be the clothes of the future.

I hope this woman has no kids, and has never been married. And it would help of she were 25 or younger.

Therese she's lived a really sad life.

Does that Instagram actually show anything other than the final result?

Steven MqCween म्हणाले...

The "dress" looked good on her but, then, anything (or nothing) would look good on her. But on your average female ...?

Paint on latex has been around for years. So the "improvements" are?
1: It can be sprayed
2: It might be reusable? So long as you haven't eaten anything since the last time you wore it?

The models are lovely - the fashion is crap.

Why not have a naked model run-way show? Everyone is happy. especially the environment.

Ice Nine म्हणाले...

OK, I'm sorry but the question screams out: How is it that her cooch is obscured in a spray-on garment that conforms exactly to her contours?

Owen म्हणाले...

Does this stuff allow your body to breathe? If not, how long before you overheat or get all slimy?

Also: nobody is wearing an N95 mask. Do we know the long-term effects of breathing this crap?

Yeah, I know: this is Fashion, man. At the Cutting Edge, man. Stop harshing the buzz, man.

I say no more.

Mike म्हणाले...

My bet is that the dress was made (sprayed) from polypropylene. Although how you get that in sprayable form without melting it is an interesting question. In any case better living through petrochemicals.

I don’t find the Hadid sisters attractive, like many fashion models. That’s how I knew I wasn’t gay. I liked Marilyn and Mary Ann; gay designers like that type represented by the Hadids.

This isn't spray-on latex. It is composed of fibers such as cotton, linen, polyester or nylon mixed with polymers in a solvent that evaporates on the surface. I suppose it is kind of like particle board made with real wood, but in clothing format.

Stanislaw Lem wrote about this fashion concept in "Return from the Stars" He also wrote of betrization, and a number of other themes oddly relevant today, over sixty years later.

I think that Anne, Meade and Michael K. might be interested in this book. Perhaps Robert Cook, as well.
