"Russia’s gas supplies to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline will not resume in full until the 'collective west' lifts sanctions..."

"... against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has said. Dmitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, blamed EU, UK and Canadian sanctions for Russia’s failure to deliver gas through the key pipeline, which delivers gas to Germany from St Petersburg via the Baltic sea. 'The problems pumping gas came about because of the sanctions western countries introduced against our country and several companies,' Peskov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. 'There are no other reasons that could have caused this pumping problem..... Obviously life is getting worse for people, businessmen, and companies in Europe.... Of course, ordinary people in these countries will have more and more questions for their leaders.'"

No one is to blame for this except Europeans who have been voting for a mythical green energy future for decades. A future that cooler heads told them repeatedly would not materialize for many more decades (if at all) or without significant improvements in technology. They bought the bait-and-switch game their politicians played with them by waving the green energy flag and virtue signaling all the while outsourcing their environmentally damaging behavior on countries like Russia, China, and elsewhere so they could 'look green'. They bought it hook like and sinker.

I'm long parka futures.

How cool would it be if the US has the supplies and infrastructure to ship natural gas to Europe to help out? If Trump had won, instead of boring Joe, we would.

It would also be pretty cool if there was a pipeline from the Middle east sending gas to Europe to help out. They easily could have been.

It's hard to feel sorry for Europe, they inflicted much of this on themselves, and it was easily predictable, and often was.

Finally, a sensible comment. Ironically, from the Russians. Who are now no doubt about to be accused by our leaders of "interfering in our elections" by pointing out that we have a bunch of fucking morons leading our country.

We should have questions of our leaders. California, for example, has passed a law phasing out gasoline powered cars in favor of electric cars, knowing full well that the California electrical grid cannot handle the powering of that many vehicles. They're already warning people not to charge their cars.

We should have questions about Gavin Newsom's leadership. Should we throw him across the Potomac with Fauci? Just asking questions.

Joe Biden has similarly forced millions and millions of American citizens to have to decide between feeding their children and filling up with gasoline the cars that they use to get back and forth to their minimum wage jobs ($7.25 per hour, same minimum wage for the last 10 years).

We should have questions about our leadership and how they got this far in life without being strung up from lampposts.

Cutting 27% to 40 % of European energy by cutting oil and gas deliveries from Russia is less than the oil and gas cuts the Greenies of Europe seek to impose on Europe. Today, Putin; tomorrow, the Greenies - on energy, same, same (except Putin will resume oil and gas shipments, at least for awhile, if the Europeans grovel enough, whereas the Greenies will not.) As we will see this winter, there is no possible way for wind, water and solar to replace gas and oil so the disaster that will happen this winter should be a warning to all about how the Greenie plans will really work out. And we will also see a bizarre mixture of indifference and incompetence wearing the mask of "expert", as Greenie energy "experts" fly all over Europe, talking from warm rooms about how great it is to be cold and hungry and then leave by private jet for the Costa Del Sol and paella. Fauci was a type, an iconic "expert" just as Walter Duranty was a type, an iconic "reporter-on-the-left" who could see the hunger and cold of millions and report that it wasn't real, that it was reactionary propaganda. Does it have to be explained that a bad decision can result in bad consequences?

Europe made a bad decision when it relied upon Russia for energy. Trump pointed that out, so perhaps they felt that they had to stick with their bad decision, but it was still bad. It was a bad decision for Germany to decommission nuclear power plants. That appealed to some constituencies, but it was still a bad decision.

I'm sorry that Europeans will suffer through this, but they are electing the wrong people.

Aggie म्हणाले...

You have to shake your head at the arrogance of the EU Masters, mostly the Germans, thinking that they can levy sanctions and price ceilings on something they don't own, and can't do without. They've convinced themselves that their own little incestuous marketplace has similar clout worldwide, and Russia has just folded their arms.

Meanwhile, the worldwide 'sanctions' on Russia have had the net effect of driving up hydrocarbon costs and restoring their formerly tottering national coffers.

And not only natural gas, not only oil; Russia is the #1 supplier of coal and wood pellets to the European market as well.

None of this was secret information. I guess the lesson is, we once again are reminded that the Germans have a strong tendency toward hubris in their DNA, and it inevitably leads to Götterdämmerung Every. Single. Time.

The Natural Gas infrastructure to bail out the EU's suicide pact doesn't exist, sorry. And the US doesn't have the reserves to pull into play. These LNG trains are built with 20-year supply contracts in place, because of their huge costs. Often, they exceed nameplate capability and are able to offer surplus cargos, and make huge profits on the spot market. But that's just some extra frosting - the cake has already been sold, chaps.

Not necessarily. Europe also benefitted greatly. As a long-term strategy, it is still not clear whether ties with Vlad are bad for Europe and us, if the greater priority is to counter China. Solidifying the China-Russia axis certainly seems a bad idea.

But Europe's, especially Germany's, mistake was to combine dependence with the Energiewende and to have no plan B. Then, when the West imprudently imposed sanctions, the stuff hit the wind turbines.

California is playing the exact same strategy…..while the rest of the US is being saved by the policies that made us a net exporter of energy. Biden is doing his best to unwind this, but let’s hope we survive until we take a more reasonable approach. Meanwhile, the UK, under its new PM, is expected to (1)begin offshore natural gas production, (2) end the moratorium on fracking and (3) restrict solar development to rooftops.
If Biden were to initiate an emergency program to aid the EU (relax regulations, emergency approval of LNG plants, more production, etc) he would be a hero to the world. The “Biden Plan” would be remembered with the “Marshall Plan”.

CA is a huge net importer of electricity - they import it from at least six states (OR, WA, MT, NV, UT, AZ). Yes - I was surprised at UT - but they just built a 1GW DC power line to there, as well as a similar line to the NW. Very few DC power distribution lines in the country, and the longest ones end up going to lower CA. In order to keep utility bills low, the state refused to allow the utility companies to charge their customers to keep their electric transmission infrastructure maintained, so it wasn’t. So, they now have a lot of overgrown rights of way for transmission lines, which turns out to be a huge wild fire hazard.

How Gavin Newsom is going to power all of those electric vehicles he is requiring is beyond me. Certainly not from generating much of it in his own state. That’s not going to happen. They may get some intermittent “renewable” energy, but not nearly enough. Compounding that, the two NW states that produce probably a majority of the electricity imported by CA have been taken over by far left crazies, and are thus more likely to dynamite existing hydro dams, than build new ones.

(for comparison, Co2 makes up @400ppm and oxygen @210,000ppm)

PhilD:. Most of the commentators on the Althouse blog are unabashedly pro Putin authoritarian shills who have transferred their loyalty to strongman Trump who as you know is Putin's wingman.

Thank you Howard for confirming what I just posted on the previous thread. You left side of the IQ distribution all still believe the Hillary story.

It is amusing to see the left supporting war and devastation in Europe.

What they don't realize is they are just a small minority of Americans.

Only 75 million and what do they count ?

By the way, with Europe in a quagmire, which of the following do you think is Trump's fault:

- Putin's aggression
- German reliance on Russia for gas, oil, coal, wood pellets as its #1 supplier
- NATO expansionism since - what, 1960?
- EU policy choices to green energy projects, which has installed foreseeable critical shortage risks in their electrical grids?
- Under-funding of NATO for most EU nations and under-participation in regional diplomatic efforts.
- 2014 color revolution in Ukraine which replaced the democratically-elected government with one more sympathetic to the west.
- Hundreds of Billions of dollars of US taxpayer-funded foreign aid to Ukraine, including sophisticated modern armaments, with no audit or oversight on where it ends up, no signed treaty agreements, nothing to administer its dispatch.

Having trouble? Your answer is: None.

Apparently you think that a vote for Trump in the past equates to Putin Fanboy Membership now. Oh, Howard... How does it feel to get up in the morning, knowing you're already wrong? Most Americans don't like Russia and Putin, they just dislike it less than China. I can't think of anyone I know that is in favor of Russia's advances. Most I know are worried that the inept US Foreign Policy corruption that has led us into this conflict over the past 10 years will eventually have our sons and maybe even daughters over there trying to clean their mess up. You think that's Trump too, in your fever swamp? Try a cool towel.

- by the way: The truckers strike was in Canada, a different country to the USA. Nobody in the trucker's strike voted for Trump.

We don't even need to be conned by the Russians to put our winter heating in jeopardy. The Dems are doing their damndest to make sure we will have insufficient this winter and every winter to come. Burn wood! Deforestation is the answer!

Howard is courageously in favor of fighting in the Ukraine to the very last Ukrainian and American soldier.

Plus, that also helps Howard's iranian islamic supremacist allies (Howard, are you still crying over Soleimani's demise?) and Biden/Howard's beloved ChiCom masters.

How does Germany continue to be an economic force on its current energy path? it doesn't. If that's what the Germans want, then so be it. But let's be honest about where they are headed.

Howard is a pure troll; he doesn't post to express cogent points or arguments--he posts to get you going!

I actually give him points for creativity in his 5:15 piece. He doesn't believe a word of it and doesn't care, because it gets a rise.

PhilD, I hope for Europe's long term good that this winter is rather harsh. That should finally break the insane Green energy/climate beliefs and policies. Relying on fantasy energy prior this latest invasion of Ukraine already resulted in Germany having the most expensive electricity in Western Europe. That alone lowers the standard of living for the middle class of Germany and reduces Germany's exports due to higher prices. The lessons I hope that Europe learns is to rely on realistic energy that is reasonably cost effective and practical. Hence nuclear power for electrical energy and natural gas and oil where needed. That means fracking in Europe and oil exploration in Europe. Diversifying natural gas suppliers such as from Israel and LNG from the US.

Regarding Ukraine, it is good that Europe is helping but shamefully nothing like it could. The US should not be the one with the largest contribution by far. Europe should be shouldering most of this. It's your neighborhood. The good thing is that Russia will lose and become less of a threat and with that that gives the US a reason to downgrade our defense spending with respects to NATO. Knocking down Russia's imperialist ambitions is a good thing. I heard that Ukraine has oil and gas to exploit and when this war is over that could be a boon for Europe. When this war is over and hopefully Putin gets overthrown Europe should offer Russia an olive branch.

In the race to be the biggest putz commenting on this post it's a race between Howard and Phil D. And I think Phil D may be in the lead by a nose. Howard you've got competition. Time to up your game if you want to keep your win streak going as "Putz of the Month". .

Nobody is cheering, we're shrugging our shoulders and saying: "We told you so.".

The same Newsom/Sacramento that last week asked electric car owners NOT to charge their cars during the heat wave. Perfect. This on the heels of mandating only electric cars will be sold in CA by 2035 making it much easier for the state to control when you can or can't drive in their fiefd...er state.
