"Chloë Grace Moretz opened up about suffering from body dysmorphic disorder after a 'horrific' 'Family Guy' meme of herself went viral, admitting she became a 'recluse.'"

The NY Post reports.

I'm unfamiliar with whatever it is that makes Chloë Grace Moretz a celebrity, but she was photographed in a very silly outfit that got made into a meme put alongside this truly hilarious "Family Guy" lady:

Why not laugh at what's clearly funny? To react by becoming recluse and then openly shaming the humorists is to reinforce the dynamic that has given us The Era of That's Not Funny.

We're being intimidated into believing that ridiculous things should not be laughed at because people may have mental conditions like "body dysmorphic disorder" that may be worsened by a failure to coddle them with kindness.

If you're photographed in a bad outfit, try to wear a good outfit next time you're out and about delivering pizza of whatever it is you do that's made you famous. This wasn't a case of mocking the shape of her body. It was her own choice to wear terrible clothes. And by the way, I think the choice of clothes is hostile to women. That she did it to herself is actually sad.

That's hilarious. If anything, it should've been the 'gargoyle cameltoe' paparazzi photo. It takes a lot to make the denizens of 4Chan wince...but that one was too much for too many.

Men would hardly call that a silly outfit. In fact I bet most would call that the ultimate pizza delivery outfit

"We're being intimidated into believing that ridiculous things should not be laughed at because people may have mental conditions like "body dysmorphic disorder" that may be worsened by a failure to coddle them with kindness."

Nicely put, thank you. But it is actually worse than that, since the intimidation itself abuses the mental conditions to enforce a Gleichschaltung aimed at controlling the culture and subjugating the deplorables.

"If you're photographed in a bad outfit, try to wear a good outfit next time you're out and about delivering pizza"

It wasn't a bad outfit. She looked fine. The outfit might get her better tips.

"And by the way, I think the choice of clothes is hostile to women. That she did it to herself is actually sad."

Why? Because it disturbs the sisterhood by engendering jealousy? I remember when hot pants were a feminist statement. I remember when miniskirts in school were an assertion of autonomy. Long time ago.

Anyway, methinks this whole kerffuffle is a publicity stunt. "Opening up" about "body dysmorphia" is good PR.

1) an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by internet users, often with slight variations:
"celebrity gossip and memes often originate on the site"·

2) an element of a culture or system of behavior passed from one individual to another by imitation or other nongenetic means.

VERB

1) create an internet meme from (an image, video, piece of text, etc.):
"there's always one audience reaction shot at the Oscars that gets memed" ·

Opinion:

Amazing that someone who starred in "Kick-Ass" and "Kick-Ass 2", doing and saying the things she did could be so delicate and offended by anything, much less a meme.

Look, don't be screwing around with my beloved Hit Girl!

I have failed to yet understand the mockery bit with the pizza photo. She's got nice wheels and it seems to be quite a flattering photo. Is she supposedly fat in it or something? There are guys who love that Auschwitz look in women that probably think so, I guess - are they responsible for this absurd brouhaha over the photo? What's the deal?

"She thought it was cruel for people to say she had long legs? Isn't that a compliment?"

There's a compliment, but there's a negative that goes with it. There's a leg/torso disproportion in the photograph, which seems to be the "legs up to here" situation that "Family Guy" took literally.

I do think she's now doing an extreme form of "humble bragging."

What I'm critiquing is the demand that we not laugh.

Static Ping বলেছেন...

I dunno. I thought she looked good.

When you realize that Hollywood is populated with a large number of people with self-esteem issues that use fame as therapy, not to mention a large number of individuals with various mental illnesses which are beneficial to being a creative but not to normal human functionality, these sort of stories are easier to understand. It also explains the large number of predators that find their way into the entertainment industry. It is a target rich environment for sociopaths and psychopaths.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

I mean, it seems that she dressed in a way where she believed she'd get strong compliments about her legs, the part of the look that she emphasized, so she was upset that the focus went somewhere else and her expectations went unfulfilled.

Live by appearances. Die by appearances. Does that make you philosophical (easy come, easy go)? Or shallow and desperate to cling to what you have?

Not only is Chloe an actress and model, but her father was a plastic surgeon, and the Moretzes made their money in the fabric business, so the shallowness may run deep in that family.

She was an extremely successful child and teen star (Ann, you might have seen "Hugo”). One can readily imagine how she may have been sexualized by the adults around her from a very young age.

This is not to say that the meme-makers did anything wrong. I think it's a cute outfit, and she looks great, and I don't think the meme was meant to be degrading. I'm just saying that I can understand why she's fragile.

William বলেছেন...

She's famous, rich, and beautiful. A lot of perks come with that status, but one downside is that if you bitch about body dysmorphic issues in public, not a lot of the public will extend much sympathy. She should restrict her complaints to members of her posse who are paid to hear such complaints... In like manner, members of the royal family should not complain about how unfairly life is treating them.

Randomizer বলেছেন...

Why is it a virtue to be a pathetic victim?

Nobody forced Chloe to wear those 5 inch heels while delivering pizzas. She is a rich celebrity who wants to be noticed, but only in a glowing and admiring way. Too bad for her.

I do feel bad for non-celebrities who find that a goofy photo from their youth ends up as a meme.

Readering বলেছেন...

Read the CGM interview. Her problems went way beyond one photo/meme.

She is pretty well known, but appears to have had a difficult transition from child star to adult actress.

She was much in the news as the female lead in I Love You Daddy, Louis CK's disastrous, unreleased homage to Woody Allen, in which she had a sort of underaged Tracy/Hemingway role. Articles about the mess tended to be illustrated with unflattering b+w stills of her standing in a bikini surrounded by fully dressed men, which showed off her (now gone) baby fat. I wondered then if she might be affected by all that.

Leland বলেছেন...

Never heard of her. Google says she's an actress, so looked her up IMDB. Known for lists movies most of which I never heard of and none that I watched. I couldn't pick her out in a line-up. As for the picture, on any given sunny day in Texas I could find a woman her age looking about the same without the psychological problems she seems to have.

On the cartoon, I find the funny part being the woman flashing the man. It is a traditional role reversal with the exception of the initiating act of him making a pass to her. The situation is funny to me, not the oddly shaped body, although I understand that part of the joke too.

JMS বলেছেন...

The outfit is funny because of the shoes. Her legs wouldn't look as long if she wore lace-up sandals or sneakers, and the red carpet-worthy heels are out of place here. The problem is that she appears to be short-waisted and in this instance didn't dress to disguise that. Maybe her short waist is the source of her body dysphoria. If a short-waisted woman wears high-rise pants or skirts, it does indeed look like her legs go all the way up to her chest. The body type that served her well as a child actress is not the body type that gets her roles as an adult.

The point of having "fuck you" money & fame is that you can ignore a stupid joke mocking you. Most of us have to care what others think (so we don't get fired, are able to find a romantic partner, etc) so it's really a shame when others who don't--who have an entire industry devoted to making people think well of them--expect sympathy from us.

She and Brie Larson should collaborate on something.

It took me a while to figure out which photo we were talking about because I don't see anything wrong with that pic. Yes, the high heels do make her legs look really long and I guess now that I know, I can see what the meme was getting at. But still, she's a beautiful young woman and her outfit was not particularly silly.

Like the professor, I have no idea what she's famous for, but as far as I can tell, most women named Chloe are famous for something.

bobby বলেছেন...

She's been living in a warped prepubescent-sexy world forever. She was drooled over loudly for years after the 2 "Kickass" movies, "Hugo" didn't exactly hide her young assets, and I think someone who grows up that way is always going to be . . . skewed. Attack her looks, you attack the only basis she has for living - or so she's always been told.

I can't see what the big deal is.

I have a feeling that Chloe is milking this to get some publicity since she's the main breadwinner for her family. She's been in movies and such but never hit it BIG like some other young actors like Dakota Fanning. Easy to do the 'woe is me!' schtick and get noticed.
