Said Mitt Romney, quoted in "What Mitt Romney says about Liz Cheney possibly running for president" (Deseret News)
Romney clearly doesn't think that Liz Cheney could be the new strong voice to lead the GOP away from Trump:
"I’m not going to encourage anyone to run for president. I’ve done that myself, and that’s something I’m not doing again. I don’t know if she really wants to do that. She would not become the nominee if she were to run. I can’t imagine that would occur.... I don’t think someone who is seen outside the Trump circle would have any realistic chance of becoming the nominee in 2024, barring something I can’t foresee at this stage. If he doesn’t run again, I think it’ll be people who either were supporters of his or people who didn’t say much about him and then would be open to become the nominee."
ADDED: I had a flash of insight upon rereading "I’m not going to encourage anyone to run for president. I’ve done that myself, and that’s something I’m not doing again." Mitt Romney is running for President. I'll explain in a separate post, because I need the headline "Mitt Romney is running for President."

Trump finally offered republican voters a choice beyond the neocon Bush party. Once liberated from the neocons there is no going back.
She's a strong voice for Nancy Pelosi. PERIOD.
"Romney clearly doesn't think that Liz Cheney could be the new strong voice to lead the GOP away from Trump:" Romney is clearly a brilliant thinker.
Enough with the self-pity, Mitt. The Republicans tried his road and it neither inspired nor won. He has no answers, doesn’t even seem to have any specific complaints beyond, “why don’t they like me?” When it should be obvious, would be obvious if he wasn’t so obtuse, why we don’t like him.
"I’m not going to encourage anyone to run for president. I’ve done that myself, and that’s something I’m not doing again.
Thank the Lord for small favours.
Cheney running for president?
Firstly, why assume she would run as a Republican? Her goal is to gum up the works for Trump, so she would have to run third party.
Secondly, all he had to say was "Ha. As if."
The bulk of Republicans have finally had enough of spineless squishes like Mitt. Sorry you don't like that, mitt.
The strong voices in the Republican party are those of the People who think real change in Washington is desperately overdue. For ending the practice of deploying government agencies forcefully and unequally against people and groups anywhere to the right of "left of center"; or appalled by the painfully-obvious chasm in the treatment of errant elite, compared to ordinary folks; the inside deals, and the corruption allowing a five-term Congress-Critter somehow to become worth $60 million after ten years of a $170 K salary; and on, and on.
Cheney should be a lot smarter. What with her Dad's lifetime in the swamp.
Cheney thinks she is loved my moderate Democrats. (They don't). To the Dems, Liz is a tissue. Single use disposable.
What I can't get my head around is how a single person can harm our Constitutional Republic.
Maybe someone can lay out the road map exactly how that would look.
Jan 6? Please. Play that all the way out with Trump prevailing. Then what? Two years later the Dems swamp congress and Republicans are out of power for 2 generations. Or Trump gets impeached in the first week. And Republicans are out of power for 1 generation.
A much more real danger is the IC, DoJ FBI and State Department colluding together to actually run the govt, with no accountability.
That was Trumps real threat. Exposing and dismantling that evil cabal.
Mitt....how can I miss you if you won't go away?
He's the Walmart version of Al Gore.
“I salute her courage. You wouldn’t call it courage, by the way, if there were no consequence for doing what you think is right. She did what she thought was right. I believe she was right,” (Romney)
Once she cast her lot against Trump*, there was no turning back. I wouldn't call it courage. After making that decision, she was forced to ramp it up, hoping Schiff, Pealosi and the MSM would drag her across the electoral finish line. She is a fool.
*The genesis for this was Trump ridiculing the Bush family (read: JEB!), brother of Dick Cheeney's former boss.
what Would Lizard Cheney bring to the race?
Vote for ME! i'm NOT Trump!

Anything else?

Mitt Romney: "There's only room for one lying turncoat in this party, and that's me, Liz"
I live in Ohio. I remember Obama saturating the market here with ads, painting Romney as the worst kind of vulture capitalist. Obama used outsourcing and the loss of manufacturing jobs against Romney. And the Romney campaign had no answer. There was no response at all. When they did run ads, they were to "humanize" Romney, like the kind of ads they used later for Jeb Bush. Establishment ads, completely detached from the concerns of regular people. "Please don't call him bad names. He's one of the good Republicans. He cares!"
My point being, I knew Romney was going to lose based on his ad campaign here. There was no fight in him. No willingness to pay a real price. And no genuine interest in the people he claimed to represent.
So I strongly doubt he has anything worthwhile to say about who should run for President in 2024. We tried his milquetoast approach before. It doesn't inspire, and it doesn't succeed.
Romney is one of the reasons the party has changed. Or, at least, why the Republican voters wanted change. I base this on purely anecdotal evidence - I changed my party registration immediately after that election.
Is it wrong for Republican voters to want a candidate who fights for the things their voters want as aggressively as the Democrat politicians do?
I’m not going to encourage anyone to run for president.
That's because Mitt supports the Democrats at this point, the Dems being much closer to his value system than any America First Republican candidates, but he can't say that.
He's right about Liz Cheney, of course. It doesn't take a genius to tell the difference between chicken shit and chicken salad.
The Republicans tried his road and it neither inspired nor won.
He came closer to beating Obama than Trump would have. And Romney would have beaten Hillary. Even running against Hillary in 2016, Trump lost the popular vote by 2%. No, that doesn't mean Hillary should have been president, but it makes it obvious that Trump was never widely popular. He won only by threading the needle with the electoral college. In 2020 he lost the popular vote to Biden by a larger margin than Obama vs Romney (Biden! An even worse candidate than Hillary -- one of the worst candidates ever -- just because he had the one redeeming quality of not being Trump).
When someone mentions “strong voice” for the Republican party, Mitt Romney does not come to mind. Just the opposite, actually. He is a go along to get along squish. We need someone with a spine willing to take on a big fight for the country.
Those who think the split among Republicans is about Trump are way behind the curve. The Republican Party is gaining support for a platform of inclusiveness for non-white peoples around America first policies. These include a major scale back in foreign interventionism (which is Cheney’s real beef with Trump) and globalism. It is summed up by Trump telling other countries that he’ll do what’s best for Americans and they should do what’s best for their people. A form of enlightened self-interest would do a lot to solve international problems (e.g. the Abraham accords, predatory tariff regimes, etc.). Americans are suffering under Biden far more than realized because the media will not report it (seen many articles on the human tragedy of the uptick of fentanyl deaths due to Biden’s open borders?). The national parties are undergoing the largest realignment since FDR. Only losers like Romney and Cheney who would never embrace minorities in their party can screw up a winning future for Republicans.

All Presidents campaign on winning the electoral vote. That's how we elect Presidents so your statement regarding the popular vote is meaningless. I' curious as to why you think Romney would have beaten Hillary. He couldn't beat Obama because did not campaign strongly to do so. I can't imagine Romney campaigning any harder against Hillary Clinton. He would be too scared of being called misogynistic.
Okay, Ann Nostradamus. Who’s the Dem nominee for POTUS?
I say Sheryl Sandberg. She’s rich, female and looking for work. No baggage.
But she could be the first woman lesbian president.
That alone would nab her 17-18, maybe as many as 25 votes.
Note: "woman lesbian" used to be redundant. I'm not sure it is any more. Men can be lesbians too these days.

LOL - Democrats for a Cheney. I thought I'd never see the day.
hahahahahahahahaaa
‘He came closer to beating Obama than Trump would have.’
Unknowable.
’And Romney would have beaten Hillary.’
Unknowable.
’…but it makes it obvious that Trump was never widely popular.’
76 million legal votes in 2020 sounds pretty popular to me…
’He won only by threading the needle with the electoral college.’
That’s how the presidential election is decided and how he campaigned.

I’m not doing predictions. I’m reading Romney’s words and interpreting them.
If Michelle Obama wants it - it's hers.
Sheryl Sandberg - interesting.
My favorite duo / non-insider / non-corrupt democrat duo is still Howard Schultz and Tulsi Gabbard. (not insider enough for the FBI elite- globalist billionaires and tech giants to consider)
I'm not a democrat - but it would be nice to be able to breathe if a non-corrupt insider made it thru.
"There was no fight in him [Mittens]. No willingness to pay a real price. And no genuine interest in the people he claimed to represent."
Right. This is the major dissatisfaction with the GOP generally, and all RINOS. No fire in the belly, no willingness to defend, to stand up for the overarching thesis of the Constitution of limiting/containing the created beast.
Trump does that. And is loved for it. And hated for it by America's domestic enemies who collect themselves in the Democrat Party.

First, Hillary won California by 5 million votes. Trump won the rest of the popular vote. Your distaste for Trump was not shared by 75 million people. Romney was a loser and I supported him thinking he was better than he was. I would not make that mistake again. I will probably support Desantis because Trump is old but we know what Trump will do in office. That is a huge factor.
Mitt may realize that the game has changed since 2012.
How long would it take for the FBI to drum up a multitude of illegalities regarding Bain Capital?
Romney wasn’t "widely popular" either. He wouldn't have Democrats trying as doggedly to destroy him, and might have had the honeymoon Trump didn't have, but soon enough he'd be as hated as Trump or Bush was.
We forget that in the end Bush was less popular than Trump. Romney probably wouldn't have started an unnecessary war, but he was politically so tone deaf that he would have found other ways to mess things up.
Trump has nothing to do with the Republican Party. They have no message beyond acquiescing and whimpering to the Democrats. Republicans (small ‘r’), conservatives and libertarians have little in common with the Republican Party.
Their tenure is under threat, because they don’t have a captive audience.
Okay, Ann Nostradamus. Who’s the Dem nominee for POTUS?
Although Althouse is not doing predictions, I will Dave.
The Dems will nominate Gavin Newsome.
I have to agree with all those who say that Romney does not have the fortitude to run again. he would be crushed in the primary by Trump for sure and by deSantis I hope. I have been looking for a lace to comment on Cheney, haven't found it so will go ahead anyway.
My gripe with Cheney is - other than I think she'd be a carbon copy of the old man - that she has signed onto the Kangaroo court of the Jan 6 hearings and has gone along with the partisan procedure with out demanding that those being "accused" have the "normal" right to confront their accusers. If she is so righteous, as a matter of principle she should have demanded that normal practice be enforced, that Republicans have their own nominees on the committee and those members be able to question witnesses. She has gone along with the court proceeding claiming she is concerned about the Constitution and rule of law while while she is, in truth, trying to conduct some kind of revenge on Trump for being nasty to her dad and his buddies.
Mitt 'n' Liz 2024.

Btw, could post-run Mittens have been elected anywhere but Utah?
Romney lost any chance with the Republican Party when he voted to impeach Donald Trump.
Factor into any fantasy calculation about Romney and Hillary that Romney couldn't beat Obama even after Obama effectively spotted him 3.5 million votes, the difference in the popular vote for Obama in 2012 vs 2008. Obama got fewer popular votes, fewer electoral votes, and a lower percentage of the popular vote in 2012 than 2008, and Romney still couldn't beat him.
