"Gratefulness is where I live cuz my granny, gmama, momma, family modeled and instilled it in me. It isn’t a posture of less than or crumbs scraping..."

"... but one that acknowledges good things aren’t a guarantee and when we encounter them thankfulness, gratefulness is the least we can express."

Said Shonka Dukureh, who played Big Mama Thornton in the Baz Luhrmann movie "Elvis," quoted, unfortunately, in a report that she has died at the age of 44 (NY Post).

Here's a slice of the trailer that I clipped to show Dukureh:

A good movie!

Very sad. She was dynamic in the role. Way too young to die.

How sad, she did an excellent job. It sounds like she had a good head on her shoulders, too.

The movie is fantastic, I've been recommending it right and left. One thing that struck me is how it does justice to civil rights issues and other major topics of the day WITHOUT giving me the sense that the director was pushing The Message. That's saying a lot.

Elvis is the movie of the year so far. Definitely worth a trip to a nice air conditioned theater for a great show.

There is a person who gets it!

We’re losing a disproportionate number of vibrant young people not on a motorcycle. Why is that?

Have never heard of her. It is 'her' I'm guessing.

Shonka Dukureh looks like a word puzzle...unscramble to reveal the secret clue.

Prediction- she wins the Oscar for best supporting actor, and I haven't even seen the movie.

I have nothing to add re Shonka Dukureh. The "Elvis" movie is pretty good, certainly worth seeing, maybe more than once. I was born in 1943, so Elvis was part of my childhood, youth, young adulthood, and (very) early middle age. My first father-in-law was a big fan of Elvis's movies, because they were so "clean". The movie pretty much skipped Elvis's movie career. I already knew that Elvis's music was influenced by Black music. I also know that a lot of us White Kids were rocking to "Black" music long before the Man let "colored" kids into our schools.

Forty-four years old. Found unresponsive in her NYC apartment; death unknown. This seems to becoming a regular occurrence.
