"Stephanie Yeboah, a body image activist and the author of 'Fattily Ever After'... said spending an hour or two naked several days a week was a crucial step..."

"... early on in her own body acceptance journey. She would take off her clothes and read, watch TV or tidy her house.... Centering the senses can help you connect brain and body. Ms. Yeboah has also turned showering into a regular meditation. She buys nice lotions and oils, and takes the time to apply them slowly, carefully noting how they smell and feel on her skin. 'It was something I started doing on my self-love journey in order to kind of come to terms with — and learn how to re-love — my body'...."

From "How to Feel Better Naked/Whether you want to find joy in your body, or just greater self-acceptance, these four strategies from psychologists, activists — and, yes, nudists — might help" (NYT).

I think that's already been said, but I agree with it.

If you live in Miami without air conditioning, naked in the house is the best option. It has no psychological effects beyond being cool. Huge increase in skin area for heat transfer.

Keep the shades down darlin'.

Tank म्हणाले...

Being naked. Tank has a different idea. One of Tank's hints for losing weight: pay less attention to the scale; instead, take off all of your clothes and stand in front of a full length mirror. Front view, side view. Is that how you want to look? If so, carry on, if not, eat less, exercise more.

Tank's credentials: Tank lost 50 pounds at age 19/20 and never gained them back.

The people pushing this want people to be fat and unhealthy.

They are the same people that funded the development of COVID 19.

They also tell you that plants and carbs are healthy parts of a human diet and are trying to ban red meat.

Things to think about.

10-15 years ago many states banned doctors helping people who did not want to be gay.

Last week Brandon made it illegal for doctors to help people realize that they are not men in women's bodies or vice versa.

How long until it becomes illegal to help someone lose weight?

I’m guessing this is something the lotion and oils industry could get behind.

This applies statewide.

Yeah cause when you do it outside the neighbors call the police.

Sure, if you want to celebrate your greatly increased susceptibility to maladies like COVID-19, heart attacks, Diabetes, etc, while acknowledging your near zero sexual attraction to those of the opposite sex, celebrate your obesity. That’s who we are talking about here - overweight women who feel sorry for themselves, but never do anything about it, except, now, walk around their houses nude.

Like she has a choice...

OK, cheap shot, but....

Look, nobody wants to see my bulky, sagging old body. But I'm not insisting that everyone SAY I'm beautiful. I'm not insisting (despite clear medical evidence to the contrary) that I am the picture of good health.

How did we get to the point where we are required to adopt the values, whims and psychosis of other?

JACORE: How did we get to the point where we are required to adopt the values, whims and psychosis of other? When criticism was codified as a hate crime and a verbal hate crime became violence.

The "fat is beautiful" and "healthy at any weight" are religious... ethical sanctions brayed to socially justify voluntary acceptance of a first-order forcing of catastrophic anthropogenic personal viability. From planned parenthood to planned parent/hood to planned personhood.

How did we get to the point where we are required to adopt the values, whims and psychosis of other?

Equity, inclusion, and delusion. Throw another baby on the barbie, it's over.

I'm morbidly obese and I find that being nude is a great motivation to skip my next meal. Especially if I glance in a mirror, or anyone else in my home catches a glimpse of my Baron Harkonnen-esque outline and recoils in horror (the appropriate response to seeing me nekkid).

That said, there is a fetish genre in film and carny sideshows and even PT Barnum's Circus celebrating the sexual allure of fat women. "Deuce Bigalow Male Gigolo" explored this, "What's New Pussycat?" used it in a subplot about a defecting scientist, "The Greatest Showman" even had a bearded fat lady to get that transgressive intersexual appeal going. So this new body positive movement is playing off a long history of sexual objectification of fat women. The market is there, with plenty of fatties, sell them something!

I was put in mind of the Austin Powers movie where a naked Fat Bastard (Mike Meyers in a really appallingly convincing body suit) is stroking his body and crooning about whether the watcher likes his titties, whether she finds him dead sexy...

Hey. Love yourself. I'm all for that. But self-love used to be a private matter (pipe down, you in back). I suppose I understand that this piece, and the person under discussion in it, are trying to help those who find self-love difficult because of how they look.

But self-love also used to be about more than how you look - maybe reminders of that and tips about how to focus on all the things about yourself that are worthy of love might be less harmful than (as seems to be our wont in these too-enlightened times) trying to convince us that it's "beautiful" and salutory to be demonstrably less healthy than those carrying less excess fat.

John henry म्हणाले...

Nude? Naked? Or nekkid?

Lewis grizzard (or perhaps John shelton Reed?) explained the difference in one of his books.

Iirc, naked just means no clothes on.

Naked means you are thinking of getting involved in some shenanigans

Nekkid is when you are actually involved in said shenanigans.

Be naked all you like. Just don't make me look at it. I feel the same about so called Trans people.

Caligula म्हणाले...

If it were possible to eliminate physical pain, unhappiness and social disapproval one could make the same argument against it: these things evolved for a good reason.

Pain encourages you promptly remove your hand from the hot stove, and the tack you just stepped on from your foot before you suffer more bodily damage. Unhappiness and social disapproval encourage you to change your behaviors and/or attitudes in ways that are mutually beneficial to all (but mostly to you).

Negative feedback produces error correction. If you break the feedback loop between maladaptive behaviors and the negative feedback that encourages you to correct these, and in one way or another (or many), you're going to pay a hefty price.

I agree with Tank. So does my spouse. When I stand naked in front of a mirror, I can no longer pretend and am instead confronted with truth. Clothes help hide that.
