Nick and Nora's dog Asta ate Oreos on a SST from the Nile to Ames iowa
You needed to work etui, stile, SSR, and the two acronyms used for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission into that sentence somehow. All while buying a sari and an obi for your amah.
thanx Yancey for adding more I'm sorry to admit, that my brain Completely Locked up, and i couldn't remember Any more cliches; I'm going to blame it on my traumatic head injury (of 22 years ) or, having smoked a LOT of dope in the '80's and '90's or, being 60 years old
I look stuff up a lot more for the Guardian cryptic, which I've been doing for a couple of years. A lot more intellectually challenging, but also a lot of Brit-things a true blue American would have no way of knowing

Where would we BE? Without Crossword Cliches?
Nick and Nora's dog Asta ate Oreos on a SST from the Nile to Ames iowa
Was "Foreordained" part of the clue again?
To be fair, it seems to be in about 75% of crosswords.
I don't care, just as long as it's not the next #NXIVM.

If you need a bird, it’s the nene.
You may need a side trip to Enid, Ok.after Ames.
And another side trip to Lake Erie or the Erie Canal with Yoko Ono while listening to Brian Eno.
As for birds, yes, the nene, but there is the tern, the erne, the emu, the rhea, and the dodo.
Yes- Brian Eno is probably the musician most likely to appear in crossword puzzle.

When I did crosswords many years ago, "bitter vetch" and "Celebes ox" were not infrequent visitors. I wonder if that's still the case.
I really try to avoid doing so, but I will confess to looking up the Oreo answer. There seemed to be a lot of Naticks in that puzzle.
