"It's a failure of male leadersh- — uh, of adult leadership..."

A fascinating slip by Tucker Carlson (at 1:43):

He's not wrong. Fathers are not the primary driver of child transition. Many have speculated that this trend is another aspect of Munchausen by Proxy which also primarily affects women. Of course, this confirms my priors so take it for what it's worth.

Can you explain what is fascinating about that "slip?" I must be dense or not sufficiently woke or whatever because he obviously started to mischaracterize, realized it and immediately corrected himself. Seriously.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

There are adult females as a technicality, but still the phrase is still women and children.

David Begley म्हणाले...

A fascinating slip by Tucker Carlson (at 1:43): Helena Kerschner tells Tucker Carlson about why she detransitioned and is now speaking out against pushing children to transition:

Fascinating.

Yes.

In that the powers that be who are mostly male are destroying the positions and identities that help people hold their place in society and are purposely degrading the social fabric of the world.

These people deserve a reckoning.

Eleanor म्हणाले...

While Tucker treated it like a slip, I think he really believes it is a failure of male leadership from other things he has said. Women as a group are the adults who are supportive of the transgender movement. They leave the women who aren't impotent to do anything about it. How many court cases do you hear about a father suing for his child to be allowed to transition? No, it's the kid's batshit crazy mother. We need fathers to take charge of this one.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"While Tucker treated it like a slip, I think he really believes it is a failure of male leadership from other things he has said."

Yeah. So do I. The slip is that he said it, that thing that he thinks.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"The slip is that he said it, that thing that he thinks."

Or... I suspect it's something that he knows will excite his viewers and he liked teasing that idea — as I do! It's an exciting idea, for those other people, but not for me. If it was something I actually thought, it would be really exciting, and I wouldn't dare say it... or would I?

Harsh Pencil म्हणाले...

I wish this was "acceptable" to say and he would simply say it.

The Boy Scouts used to have a good model that echoed how successful societies raised boys for centuries. Up until about 6th grade, boys were in Cub Scouts which were primarily led by Den Mothers. Then the boys transitioned to Boy Scouts which were primarily led by older boys (think High School juniors and seniors) who themselves were led by men. This the normal way in most societies --- mothers and other women in the community raised both sexes as young children, but the men took over to complete the raising of the boys.

The Boy Scouts as an organization weren't destroyed by adult male gay predators (although they were certainly there and extremely damaging, but not in the numbers people think. I never saw any) or by gay scouts, but by the introduction of moms especially those who insisted on being adult leaders as opposed to simply observing. Letting the moms in was a failure of male leadership.

Robert Marshall म्हणाले...

"Fascinating slip"?

Not so much to me. It's possible he was thinking "medical leadership," and said a word ("male") that starts and ends with the same sounds, and is itself a germane word to the discussion of sex change medical practice. Or maybe not.

It doesn't matter much to me, because I think his point of view, that the people espousing this radical treatment of mentally and emotionally troubled kids are actually committing child abuse, is completely right. And I think that view is gradually rising to the top, becoming less "politically incorrect," and will someday be the prevailing view. We will then look back at these medical profiteers, cashing in on the woke-promoted enabling of government-financing of these procedures, the way we look back at Dr. Mengele's "research". Cruel and inhuman.

Michael K म्हणाले...

I watched the interview and did not notice the "slip." Probably because I agree with him. The "transition" stuff is child abuse.

Andrew म्हणाले...

Even though their personalities and styles are very different, Tucker reminds me of Trump. It's easy to point out their flaws and mistakes. But both of them confront issues that no one else is willing to confront. Both of them provoke honest conversations, knowing they'll be slandered and attacked. In their own ways, they are speaking truth to power, at a time when most people are too indifferent or cowardly to do it. Both of them have spines of steel. This woman whom Tucker is interviewing - who else is giving her a voice? Kudos to him for confronting the trans-identity complex head on. On this issue, he's on the side of the angels.

Males have been conditioned over the last 10 years to not provide leadership. Is there an institution in the west that is not female dominated or dominated by men who have bought into the concept that their gender is inherently evil and that the worst thing they can do is “mansplain”? Of course there are men who take that position cynically as a way to advance but that, in itself, is a very feminine tactic.

Joe Smith म्हणाले...

My blood was boiling watching this.

Kids are confused in their teens.

Not a reason to mutilate them for life.

Shame on any medical doctor who enables this behavior.

They should be prosecuted...

Breezy म्हणाले...

The Disney CEO is a good example of failed male leadership.

Michael K म्हणाले...

I wonder how much the Obamacare diminishing of surgical incomes has to do with the willingness of surgeons to do these mutilating operations? The "Recovered Memories" hysteria was fed by psychologists seeking another revenue source when health insurance stopped paying for their services. The APA had courses on "How to recover memories" and the hysteria stopped suddenly when malpractice insurance quit covering it. A few medical malpractice suits against these "clinics" might end the whole thing.

When my buddy gets elected to the Nebraska Unicameral, he’s going to introduce a bill stopping all this transitional medical stuff until the age of majority. It’s crazy that children can be given puberty blockers but have to wait until 19 in NE to legally buy beer.

Jupiter म्हणाले...

Althouse, you amaze me! You listen to a three-minute discussion, in which a young woman talks about, among other things, girls younger than 16 having their breasts cut off, by adults (quite possibly male adults), and what you come away with is TuCa saying "male" and then correcting himself with "adult". Presumably indicating that in TuCa's biased little inner mind-of-minds, adult leadership is male.

So, is this because you are a feminist? Does feminism mean being so alert for "sexism" that mention of unnecessary mastectomies performed on children passes unremarked? Maybe it's a lawyer's habit.

Jupiter म्हणाले...

Maybe it is a failure of male leadership. A "surgeon" who cuts the breasts off a sixteen-year-old girl deserves to be tied to a pole in the public square and shot until dead. I don't guess we can expect most women to arrange that. At the same time, in the accounts I have read, it is usually the mother who tries the protect her daughter from these criminal monsters. Fathers try to protect our sons, from the crazy women, often step-mothers, who want to emasculate them. But we feel a certain reticence about daughters. How is a man supposed to know what a woman wants? How can he tell her she wants something other than what she claims to want?

mikee म्हणाले...

That was no mere slip. It was a fully well-clothed comment, not just one piece of a woman's undergarments. That was an entirely planned and purposeful comment.

AZ Bob म्हणाले...

What he really wanted to say was that college-educated white women are the worst.

Jupiter म्हणाले...

"Or... I suspect it's something that he knows will excite his viewers and he liked teasing that idea..."

Nuts. Look. I found her a rather plain young woman. Until she talks for a while, and her personality began to work on me, and she began to seem quite attractive. I expect she had the same effect on TuCa, but he kept that to himself until he had managed to turn it into something socially acceptable, about how suffering had "deepened" her. Would you be happier if he had said, "Christ, you wanted to cut those off?!?"?

Jupiter म्हणाले...

What I noticed, in TuCa's diction, was the phrase "take advantage". He said that adults were "taking advantage" of children. I hadn't considered it that way, and I had to ask myself what advantage there could be, to an adult, in persuading a naive, insecure and impressionable child to undergo hideous, permanent mutilation. What explains the fervency with which these monsters ply their awful trade?

Stats would be interesting. How many are married. How many divorced. How many never married. How many Lez?

I can understand anybody accepting, maybe unhappily, that their older teen is lez or gay. But drugs and operations on kids considered to young to drink alcohol
does seem irresponsible .

Crime show fiction seems to all have a woman in charge. And, seems to be a lot of women police and fire chiefs. Maybe they are actually more qualified as leaders than the men in competition for the job.

I took the slip to mean that men are in charge of everything. Tucker instantly realized that assumption which is never said out loud was inappropriate especially since he was speaking to a young woman who is clearly in charge of her own life. Maybe subconsciously he felt he was talking with another guy.

Putin has never before reaped such a windfall.

Sure it's a slip of the tongue but it does reflect the idea (notion, perception, reality?) that for most of the centuries when adults were unquestionably in charge, men were also in charge.

If you can find another Elizabeth I or Margaret Thatcher or somebody like that to head things up, she'd do fine, too. If all you get are the kind of women who are governing the Scandinavian countries, that won't help much.

Jupiter- I think see did “cut those off” and then have implants again. Possibly. But, are her mammary glands gone? If a young woman has a double mastectomy, she’ll never produce milk to feed her children - if she were to have them and want to feed them that way. And it’s such a hormonal watershed moment.
