Do not approach the fox! I see "The tale of a wild fox on Capitol Hill had captivated those who live and work there."

In the NYT: "The Capitol Fox, Euthanized After Attacks, Tests Positive for Rabies/The tale of a wild fox on Capitol Hill had captivated those who live and work there. Then a congressman and several others were bitten, the fox was captured and she turned out to be rabid."

Oh, humans of Washington — you who think you know what's good for us people who live outside your charmed circle —  what do you know of how the world works? Did you think you were lucky that a cute fox was happy to walk up to you? Did you experience it as a testament to your charisma?

Here's an article from April 5th, before the fox tested positive: "'Have You Seen the Capitol Fox?'Animal control officers descended on Capitol Hill after reports of lawmakers, staff members and reporters being attacked by a wild fox believed to have been nesting on the Capitol grounds" (NYT).

“Fox News. Red. ‘Aggressive.’ Roaming the Capitol,” read the Twitter bio of a user calling itself Capitol Fox....

“I was sitting at a gazebo outside the Russell Senate Office building when this little one came trotting up,” Michael Macagnone, a reporter for CQ, said on Twitter, posting a picture of a fox. He added that the fox “then galloped after a squirrel.”

Representative Andy Levin of Michigan said his heart leaped with joy when he heard about the foxes on Capitol Hill, seemingly unaware that one had bitten a fellow Democratic colleague the night before.

“We need more wild creatures around here & less wild conspiracies,” Mr. Levin said, steering the online conversation back toward politics....

By Tuesday evening, the Capitol Fox’s Twitter avatar had been replaced with a picture of the caged animal, and a new lobbying campaign had sprung up in the nation’s capital.

“THIS IS NOT THE END!” read a tweet posted alongside photographs of the fox being captured. “#FreeTheFox.”
Of course, the fox is now dead. Or a fox is now dead. They have to kill it to test it for rabies.

One response to that last tweet is: "I'm gonna be so mad if she doesn't actually have rabies." Yeah, it's terrible to kill an animal just to find out whether it has rabies.

And here's a tweet from a Politico reporter (whose focus is health and medicine):

surprise! surprise!
Wild rabid animals, running around attacking people causes democrat's hearts to "leap with Joy!"

Democrats are fuckheads! Prove me wrong

The Left shows more compassion for a rabid fox than for the conservative Americans held without bail in the DC jail.

Wild animals, that normally stay out of sight, or are largely nocturnal, that start being visible and don't run from humans need, to be hunted down and killed.
They are most likely rabid.
This is common knowledge. This yet another example of Anthropomorphism of animals. Disney has made people stupid.
I would think the Park service personnel would be educated in such things. This critter had a twitter following and nobody thought is was rabid?

Must have been bitten by a member of Congress.

Capitol Hill is surrounded by urban development for miles in every direction. Any fox staying visible in the daytime in that area is not a normal fox. Normal foxes hunt at dawn/twilight and rely on stealth.

This brings to mind the ignorant Yellowstone tourist who put a wild baby bison in his car because he thought it was "cold." National parks are full of people who think they are in a zoo or at Disneyland...no shocker that elected officials act the same...they are indeed in la la land.

You can be pro-Nature while recognizing her nature - you know, red of tooth and claw. You can be pro-pollinator without cavorting with a swarm of bees, pro-bat without hanging out in a cave at exit time, pro-bear without going to live among near-hibernation grizzlies, pro-alligator without wanting to encounter one on the golf course (our golf course relocates any alligator that reaches 5 feet, and I tend to wish they would go a bit smaller than that... Might be an animal control thing locally). A mostly nocturnal animal out during daylight ought to make you cautious, not "fill you with joy."

Have conspiracy theories cropped up yet that the Fox's positive rabies test was planted? It doesn't look or act like it has rabies in the photos or videos and, public perception notwithstanding, rabies is pretty rare.

I wonder if the Washington politicians will be filled with equal wonder and delight at the illegal aliens Texas Gov. Abbot buses and drops off on the Capitol steps.

Rabies is common in foxes. If a fox bites a human who is not trying to catch it, then the fox almost certainly has rabies. Rabies causes them to want to bit--that is how the disease spreads itself.

Who bit the fox to give it rabies? Well, Pelosi and Schumer are still on the loose. And AOC, and Mad Maxine...Dick Durbin has been seen a lot recently--he often foams at the mouth. And that old guy farther up Pennsylvania Avenue...

Having recently lived in the DC area for three years I can say that I saw many foxes in broad daylight in suburban areas. I lived in SE Pennsylvania for decades and never once saw a fox in the middle of the day, yet I saw dozens in Fairfax County. I doubt all of the ones I saw walking about in the middle of the day were rabid, although I didn't ask their political party so who knows?

"There is a fox in the Capitol. For some people, the fox is easy to see. Others don't see it at all. Some people say the fox is tame. Others say it's rabid and dangerous. Since no one can really be sure who's right, isn't it smart to be wary of the fox? If there is a fox".

Something I seem to remember from long ago.

If you believe you are ruled by idiots, that is an admission that you are either a surrendering coward or a self-made fool.

If I see a fox on my property that is obviously not wary of humans, I shoot it. A healthy fox will run away when it sees people. A rabid one will come towards you. At that point, you shoot it.

Anthony म्हणाले...

They can be in and around humans and interacting with them without being rabid. If it starts attacking people, then there's a good bet it's rabid. Otherwise, they're clever and are perfectly fine acting "tame" around people for food.

One of the park rangers at the Mt. Rainier visitor's center once told a co-worker of mine that one of the local foxes learned that if it feigned a limp it would get more attention (i.e., handouts) from the tourists.

Disney strikes again! Polar bears cuddling with seals, little foxes that just want to talk to you. Maybe they can train the foxes to chew off the genitals of those who wish to go down that trail. I think there would be support even amongst some Republicans!

It's sad that the poor fox had rabies. On the other hand, he no doubt knew that his risk of becoming rapid was greatly increased every time he chose to bite someone on Capitol Hill.
