From the comments section at "HBO pulls Larry David documentary hours before premiere so comedian can 'do it in front of an audience'/The Larry David Story was supposed to premiere tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT."
Now, the more interesting question is how can you do something live after you already have it filmed? Before you say maybe they never did film this documentary but were always planning to say we're doing it live, look at the trailer, which seems to be evidence — albeit not conclusive evidence — that there was a documentary already made:
Key line in there: "I'm a total fraud."
It's said to be an extensive interview — Larry Charles interviewing Larry David — so what I'm hoping is happening is that they are following the "My Dinner with Andre" method. To make "Andre," 2 men had extensive, rambling discussions, then they edited it into a very tight conversation, which became the script, that they — actors, now — performed.
In this case, perhaps Charles and David filmed long interviews, and the idea may originally have been to edit the footage into a documentary, but then they decided it would be cooler to make a transcript of the edited footage and perform it as actors in one continuous live show.
"My Dinner with Andre" became a classy as hell movie, but LD is a comedian, so, for him, the highest form is speaking to a live audience.

I had set my TV to record that show.
I think the more interesting question is, how the hell does Larry David get away with insulting excessively, boldly, relentlessly, every single protected-marginalized victim group on record (and some no one else has even yet thought to fret over)? Whereas everyone else risks total destruction for even hinting at a joke about. An amazing feat for which alone he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.
Maybe David will finally explain why he didn't just shave his head rather than keep that ridiculous remaining hair.
"'My Dinner with Andre' became a classy as hell movie". LOOOOL I can't figure out if she is being serious about "classy as hell" or not. It's not an idiom I would ever figure Ann to use. I have learned to accept that she genuinely enjoys that dog fart of a movie.
If women can hop into bed with a pig like Harvey Weinstein to get ahead, I guess they would do it with Larry David. And if somme got harrassed or abused, I wouldn't be surprised.
Or more likely it got pulled because Larry David got a little too edgy. Maybe made a joke about "Metoo" or gays.
LD has the once common, but now almost entirely lost, ability to be a batshit Lefty and still recognize all the absurdity and hypocrisy that worldview entails. Some of the most hilarious conversations of my youth were with those guys and now they're nowhere to be found.

Because there are these things called "rehearsals", where things can be filmed to check angles, sound, and lighting.
I wonder if the decision had anything to do with not wanting the Ukraine thing to distract from this television event.
Make it Oscar eligible by showing in theater first?
"Larry has decided he wants to do it in front of an audience."
Frightening prospect.
Was that wrong?
"Larry has decided he wants to do it in front of an audience."
That's what got Louis CK in troubble.
---that dog fart of a movie. [Patrick]
You didn't like that painfully tedious snoozer?
I preferred My Breakfast With Blassie. A penetrating tour de force. A deep dive into the soul of the Classy one.
I still have to say that this is the real Larry, waiting for Moe to pull his hair.
They should have gotten Jason Alexander to play Larry. His version was always better than the original.
