The NYT is live-chatting Zelensky's address to Congress, which is in progress now.
"President Zelensky is layering in American touchstones in his address: Mount Rushmore to discuss shared values, Pearl Harbor and 9/11 to recall shared threats."
UPDATE: He asks us to watch a video. The video evokes great empathy. It's hard for me to imagine anyone watching and not weeping. After the video, Zelensky speaks in English. I transcribed this line: "I see no sense in life if it cannot stop the deaths."

Madness
So he didn't even thank us for the sage advice Hunter gave Burisma?
Anyway, what are our stakes in Ukraine? Besides giving keyboard warriors a chance to show their bravery, what do we want? How do we intend to use the sanctions--as permanent punishment or as a tool to fashion a settlement?
Could, somebody tell me, Why we should be entering into nuclear combat, toe to toe, with the ruskies?
I mean, I'm not saying we wouldn't win..
But, we'd Sure As Hell get our hair musted
A no-fly zone would require US fighters to shoot down Russian jets. We’re afraid to route Polish (and German?) MiG-29s through this country on their way to Ukraine, lest Washington, New York, and a bunch of other US cities disappear in nuclear fireballs. No, I don’t think so.
Ship Stinger missiles to Ukraine, ship them Patriot missiles, ship them 40mm guns, but don’t bother sending US fighter pilots unless you really do want a nuclear ballistic missile exchange between the US and Russia.
"President Zelensky is layering in American touchstones in his address: Mount Rushmore to discuss shared values, Pearl Harbor and 9/11 to recall shared threats."
Meanwhile, President Biden plans to block fireworks over Mount Rushmore on July 4th for the second year in a row, denigrating the shared values of most Americans?
Biden administration blocks July 4 fireworks at Mount Rushmore for second year in a row
The Biden administration is preventing South Dakota from putting on a fireworks display at Mount Rushmore for the second year in a row, in a decision harshly criticized by Republican Gov. Kristi Noem.
In a March 14 letter, the National Park Service informed the South Dakota Department of Tourism that a request for a permit to put on the fireworks display was denied. "After careful consideration, the NPS has determined that we are unable to grant your request for this permit to hold a special event with fireworks at the Memorial," the letter stated.
I am not listening. I like Zelensky -- but all the foot-stomping for war, count me out. Z will have to deal unless he wants his country totally destroyed. NATO and Biden will do little to change that fate. They misled Ukraine into this and will not get them out of it, no-fly zone or not. Meanwhile, we play kissy face with the genocidal goons of Iran with the help of RUSSIA! And China will be happy to take all that Russian oil once they build the needed infrastructure -- along with the forests and resources of Russia's vast landmass. How can anyone take this sideshow seriously?
Our governor, Aunt Bea, tweeted her desire that a Javelin missile labeled ‘Made in Alabama’ is the last thing Putin ever reads. She’s feisty like that…

And the Biden junta is just dumb enough to give it to him.
I watched our President Joe try to give a speech yesterday. It is so painful just to watch him stumble, get his thoughts mixed up, forget who is around him, not know his own cabinet members, and flail with words, while the entirety of our government, media, academia, tech giants all continue to hold his hand and prop him (and Kamala) up. He is incapable of leading a child to the bathroom, let alone lead the nation- or the world- in anything. And frankly, when he was a young Senator, he could hold a thought better, but his thoughts were bullshit then, too. He has never been a leader. He used to be a loud talker. That's all.
I feel horribly for Zelenskyy that he has to beg this failing man, and his less than mediocre team, for help. I do not want us sending any of our people to fight. But Zelenskyy is correct: If President Biden is supposedly the leader of the US, then he has to be the leader for peace. He/we have to be that. To stand down to Russia is to allow death and murder- as we did in Aleppo. We cannot stop it worldwide. But sometimes we do get that chance to step up.
We are at the point where we have to figure out every possible way to get arms, jets, and ammunition to the Ukrainians, to allow them to defend themselves, and the West. If the US continues to 'lead from behind', as Obama taught his team to do, history will reflect this is the time when the US chose to abdicate it's role as leaders of the free world. It is not a role we love to play, but it is our place in history. We are the ones. If not us, then who?
Among the nations of the West, there has to be a way to get these supplies to the Ukrainians, to allow them to do the dirty work. Like Joe Biden, Putin's Russia is failing as well. They are short men and supplies. As this drags out, Putin will either have to back off and negotiate a peace, or do something the world will recoil at. At that time, if we had done nothing, what will we tell each other?
And as the Chinese watch how the West reacts, what will they learn as they stare out at Taiwan?
We in the US have the worst leaders I've ever seen in my lifetime. Right now. Almost all of them, from Congress to our Executive branch. I don't feel good about anything they do when they get together. But sitting back now and watching cannot be acceptable. I don't know how we would rationalize the results.
Elections do have consequences, don't they?
And, relative to my comment at 8:30, keep in mind that before the invasion I had advocated for placing F-15 and F-22 fighters in NATO allies that border on Ukraine (also ground attack aircraft like F-15Es and A-10s). It’s one thing to to threaten “you start something, there’s going to be something” and quite another to jump into the middle of a gunfight.

Biden considers giving devastating Switchblade tank-killing 'kamikaze' drones to Ukrainians as part of new $1BN arms package he will unveil today as Zelensky prepares to plead with Congress at 9am TODAY for more weapons to defend his country
"...The most powerful of the two Switchblades, the Switchblade 600, weighs 50lbs and can hover over a target for 40 minutes before darting down at speeds of 115mph, piercing armor and destroying a tank.
The lighter Switchblade 300 is intended to kill people in the open and passengers in a vehicle.
It weighs only 5.5lbs but can travel for six miles, hover for 15 minutes, and then dive down to a target at 100mph.
Both Switchblades are designed to be easily portable, fitting into a rucksack and fired from a tube set up in 10 minutes. They were chosen for their ease-of-use, and because prospective operators require comparatively little training before use.
They are also intended to be cost-efficient; a Switchblade 300 costs $6,000, versus a $150,000-a-time Hellfire missile, fired from a conventional Predator or Reaper drone.
An additional advantage of the Switchblade, AeroVironment say, is that the strike can be aborted seconds before the target is hit - unlike a Hellfire drone. Hellfires have infamously hit targets which later turned out to be innocent civilians.
The idea of sending Switchblades to Ukraine was first reported by NBC News."
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10617887/Biden-considering-supplying-Ukraine-easy-use-Switchblade-KAMIKAZE-DRONES.html
Obviously, the leak of this information to NBC News definitely shouldn't have happened until the Switchblades were safely in the hands of the Ukrainians.
Unless, of course, it was a political virtue-signaling leak to convey the idea that Biden isn't entirely comatose yet.
Zelensky is now a historical figure, and that is no small thing for any professional entertainer. I would like to propose that Zelensky will continue to ask for that which we will never give him while we send him everything short of that. The Ukrainians are familiar enough with their position of alienation of affection from all parties involved by now to play the game with a high degree of sophistication The hinge is that we do not know if they can kill Russian air fire from the ground effectively enough to survive.
We say that we do not provide real time targeting info from NATO but that's a hard thing to prove or disprove. I am sure that NATO will continue to fight this "special operation" to the last Ukrainian. May God's grace cover all involved.

I'd say there's a non-zero chance of that happening sending that hardware, too.
Y'all can call me a "Putin apologist" but he and his crew might have a different idea of how much the US/NATO has entered into and even escalated this conflict already, and not respect the idea that we're somehow showing restraint by not green-lighting the MiG transfer.
So the thinking is that a nuclear armed country absolutely will use nukes in offensive attacks against US cities, when faced with conventional forces stopping their invasion of a third country, despite the horrible logic of MAD? So we cannot fight, at all, ever, to stop such an invasion by a nuclear armed country.
And simultaneously, we must allow Iran's doomsday cultists, who have already spent decades terrorizing and warring against their neighbors directly and via proxies, to have nuclear armed ballistic missiles because stopping conventionally-armed Iran from producing nukes and ballistic missiles is costly and risky.
My cognitive dissonance meter is overloaded.
Here's a thought...Biden should make Zelensky a citizen of the United States.
I'm guessing he could do it with a simple signature.
The next question, if the Russians assassinate him is, 'Now what?'
It would be a Trumpian move...but Joe has neither the imagination or the nerve.
The time to have seriously armed Ukraine was 3 or 4 years ago. At this point Zelensky's best bet is at the negotiating table. Ukraine may fight Russia to a stalemate but the country will lie in ruins and I can't see Russia chipping in billions of cash to help rebuild; that will be the US taxpayers.
"I see no sense in life if it cannot stop the deaths."
So, what's the best way to "stop the deaths"--more fighting, or not?
How is supplying advanced weapons to kill Russians different from us entering the war?
No fly zone = WW III. No fly zone = NATO Jets shooting down Russian Aircraft = Russians Shooting down NATO aircraft = widespread war.
Russia has tactical Nukes and ICBMs. And gee, I thought putin was CRAZY. So, we're going to start a war with a madman with Nukes.
What pray tell does any of this have to do with the security of the USA? From 1790-1992 the Ukraine was ruled by Moscow and nobody gave a damn. Now, the Ukraine is worth WW III. Tommorrow Ukraine could win, or Russia could win, and it won't make a damn bit of difference to the defense/interests of the USA. In fact, this intervention is making us poorer.
This creep zelensky needs to negotiate a peace with Putin, instead of getting his people killed and trying to start WW III.
As usual the Senate Republicans manage to be the enemy of the average American. No border fence for the USA. No money for immigration enforcement or border security. But $14 billion to protect Ukraine's border sails through at the snap of a finger. Compare Romeney's hysterical language about Ukraine's security with his love of BLM Riots and open borders.
Even if I was a Putin hater or loved the Ukraine, I would want this war to end. Its getting civilians killed for no reason, and people like Romney and Pelosi want to turn Ukraine into another Afghanistan. Lure the Russian bear into a trap. And then have endless low level death and destruction for years. To hell with that.
Ship Stinger missiles to Ukraine, ship them Patriot missiles, ship them 40mm guns, but don’t bother sending US fighter pilots unless you really do want a nuclear ballistic missile exchange between the US and Russia.
I have several contacts who are working overtime to send arms to Ukraine. We are not publicizing it, but we are shipping a helluva lot over there. I doubt if we are sending the most modern stuff, but it is still stuff in our arsenal.
The video evokes great empathy. It's hard for me to imagine anyone watching and not weeping
They target women.
Did they all use the same DC PR firm that started the Gulf War? Remember that teary lady from Kuwait? That firm did a good job with that one...

Send Nancy Pelosi to fight the Russians.
And all of her family. And the rest of the senate and the congress and their staff.
And the FBI, DOJ, NSA,CIA, everyone inside the Pentagon, EPA.
I would be sad for the 2 or 3 decent people we lose.
. We are not publicizing it, but we are shipping a helluva lot over there.
Now, if the Biden administration would keep their mouth shut about what they're doing, that'd be great.
I'll never forget Biden got Seal Team-6 killed because he bragged it was them that carried out the Bin Laden raid.
Here's the deal. We sell/give the Ukrainians the weapons to fight the Russians. Lend Lease. We don't have to get into WW 3.
Watched the video. Powerful. Very skillful in the use of before and after pictures. It proves the power of rightful rhetoric. They have the facts on their side. Ukraine is the real victim here. Rumors of staggering losses by Russia.
Classic line. "I have a need."
Zelensky is a rhetorical genius.
Zelensky was trained as a lawyer. That explains plenty.
All you Trump pussies are afraid to call Vlads bluff. Giving in to the threats of a bully only empowers the bully to keep going. You cucks relish the other thought of being Putin's permanent hostage restrained by his constant threat of nuclear war.

'Fears of nuclear radiation have ignited a global run on potassium iodide tablets since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Manufacturers have ramped up production of the tablets, which provide limited protection against radiation sickness, CNN reported.
Some dosages are sold out.
“In the past five days we’ve probably sold as much as what typically would take us half a year to sell,” Troy Jones, vice president of sales and marketing for New York-based Anbex Inc., told the network.
The company has sold up to 15 million pills since February, Jones told CNN.
Shortages also have led to price-gouging. Twenty tablets of ThyroSafe, which contains potassium iodide, are selling for $175 on eBay, The Washington Post reported.'

Haven't bought any, but in case anyone is interested, still available on Amazon @ 32 cents a tablet.

It doesn't matter. Putin wants everything to return to the 1980's when nobody farted loudly without checking with Moscow first. He will find some reason to escalate this mess to try and achieve that dream.
I can’t imagine that a candidate will appear in the US who is committed to deescalating this mess. We won’t have the choice to vote for anything except war.
After watching propaganda, and virtue signaling our national 'power', could we have videos from Baltimore, E St louis, DC, LA Portland or any other Dem run city?? Residents murdered, buildings burned out, drugs out in the open, rats, decay, and hopelessness?
Would be nice if the Democrats and Republicans actually gave a damn about American cities.
Much easier for feminized fools to pretend to be macho, and go toe to toe with the russkies. Sending deplorables' kids to fight, while they sit back and pretend.
People who have no concept of evil- who think a few well chosen words will win the fight.
We are viewed as weak feminine children by the rest of the world.
And we voted for all of this. Super power? LOL
I don't have particular respect for the U.S. here. We are half in, half out. Either Putin is an existential threat with nuclear weapons or he's not.
My issue is our half-in is destruction of the Russian economy and arming of Ukraine as a direct response to Russia attacking Ukraine. That is, we are using our might to directly harm Russia in response to their war. So we are in fact participating in a war and we have chosen a side. But we are artificially declaring that we aren't really at war with Russia cause, like, none of our soldiers are the ones dying. By that same mentality, sending a hunter-killer drone swarm into Ukraine to wipe out Russian military would also not be us at war with Russia.
P.s. Obama in 2009 stood beside then Russian President and re-affirmed our commitment to Ukrainian security protection in exchange for their de-nuclearization. While our current Pres was VP. Just saying....do we stand by our words or not?

Ukrainian people are the victims. But not the only ones.
So are the poor and working class people all over the world who are about to deal with food riots and starvtion because of the coming food shortage.
The warmongers in DC and the corrupt politicians in Ukraine however are making money hand over fist.
Of course they want war.

I don't blame Zelensky for bending to his US masters' will in trying to bring on WW3, and finally bring the neocon wet dream of a war to crush Russia into being, but If Biden manages to resist this assault on humanity by that cancerous and all too powerful faction in our government, all is forgiven.

Putin says the West's 'attempt to have global dominance is coming to an end and it is trying to 'cancel Russia' with 'economic blitzkrieg' of sanctions
"...Meanwhile Russian state TV Rossiya aired a segment on battle plans to invade the Baltic states, showing a white board with potential routes on live television."
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10619493/Putin-says-Wests-attempt-global-dominance-coming-end.html
Certainly not a threat, only a friendly reminder.
The opposing side should have been given a chance to talk as well. A summary -- Russia is very weak and unpredictable. The United States is hostile and overwhelmingly powerful. In order to solve the problem of Russia's military weakness, Putin has dramatically lowered the threshold for when he would use nuclear weapons. A no fly zone and the tit for tat it entails risks a greater conflict that may ultimately lead to the exchange of nuclear bombs. This is terrifying.
Sure, why not make zelenski a us citizen.
It could be payback for making Natalie jaresko, born in Chicago, a Ukrainian citizen so she could become Ukrainian minister of finance.
She was also in contention to be prime Minister but that might have been a step too far.
Then when the Grift in the Puerto Rico bankruptcy was too big for even us and pr politicians to handle, bring her in. There are some levels of corruption that only a Ukrainian can handle.
She is still a Ukrainian citizen. Not, apparently, a US citizen having renounced to take the finance minister post.
She was at ground zero of Ukrainian corruption with us funds since the 90s.

Part of the same mob that gave us Obama (and Biden)
Crocodile tears, at best. A wicked mind and solution with "benefits", at worst. He had 32 trimesters to end the civil war forced by a poorly considered violent Western-backed coup in Kiev in a Slavic Spring. 32 trimesters to offer reconciliation and remediation to Ukrainians who were disenfranchised and subject to assaults (i.e. denial of services, military and paramilitary attacks). Deja vu. #HateLovesAbortion
If I and my people were on the verge of destruction I would say the same things as Zelensky, but that knowledge does not make me want to risk World War 3 and the destruction of planet Earth to save Ukraine. I guess deep down I always was an environmentalist.
We are being inundated by propaganda supporting Ukraine. We will be lucky if Biden's incompetent staff avoids a nuclear war. They are idiots and way overmatched by any serious person in our enemies and allies.

Howard has his bomb shelter all ready to cheer on the ones (mostly Trump voters) he will send to fight the war he wants. I still remember my reserve unit being called up in 1961 when the Soviets built the Berlin Wall. We wondered what was next but we all showed up. Howard would be hiding.
There weren't any videos of the people killed every day by the Ukranian government supported ulta nationalists in Donbass. They have been bombing them for 8 years.
I seem to remember Churchill saying “Give us the tools and we’ll finish the job.”
Zelensky should use that line.
The same people in the Obama administration that created this mess, in my opinion, are now the Biden administration.
Imagine that.
"So the thinking is that a nuclear armed country absolutely will use nukes in offensive attacks against US cities, when faced with conventional forces stopping their invasion of a third country, despite the horrible logic of MAD? So we cannot fight, at all, ever, to stop such an invasion by a nuclear armed country."
That would appear to be the logic adopted by many of the "anti-war" people.
I'm afraid that some of us have become so politicized in our opposition to the rotten bastards in the media and the Democrat party that they are seeing this as "anybody versus Biden" and are taking "anybody's" side.
No No No! Stay the hell out of it. The Biden administration has failed at everything it's touched. We wouldn't even have this war in the first place if Biden's weakness hadn't emboldened Russia to invade. And now I just watched Biden all but declare war against Russia. So now we're courting WWIII if for no better reason than to distract the American people in an election year from all this administration's failures including those which put us in this position in the first place.
Let's not forget that Trump’s desire to extort and manipulate Zelensky and the security of Ukraine for Trump's personal political ends was entirely acceptable by Republicans in 2019-20. Anyone here still defending the perfect phone call? Of course you are.
Trump didn't give a shit about Ukraine or the Ukrainian people. He still doesn't. He must be horribly jealous of Zelensky.

Howard's been playing Duke Nukem--Manhattan Project in his mom's basement again. Virtual Vlad better watch out! Duke'll call his bluff, unless Howard's mom interrupts to make him take out the garbage. Until then, Ukraine's in good hands.
We could fight in Afghanistan for twenty years without causing a wheat famine but we can't do that in the Ukraine. And world-wide we also need the fertilizer made in Russia.
At the same time, why accept that the choice is either nuclear war or surrender in Ukraine. Agreed, our leaders are visibly in mental decline and won't come up with any solutions on their own. They'll just sit switching their bobble-heads between those two alternatives. But surely there are other approaches. Start drilling and fracking in the US. Promise to make Turkey part of Nato and to re-arm both Germany and Japan and send jets to the Baltic states and, in general, put down markers other than a Czechoslovakia, I mean Ukraine, surrender. Do something now about the approaching famine in Lebanon a week away; and about the other food issues - now. Not windmills.
Of course, saying "do something about transporting food" brings to mind Supply Chain Pete the Incompetent, Transportation Secretary, who will be as good at preventing famine as Kamala was on the border. It brings to mind the Dems, the party of incompetence. It's very hard to think that feckless idiots cavorting about Hollywood and NYC have got a government like themselves into power in the US and, as a result, real people elsewhere might starve. Our governing class wanted and got a country run by priapic incompetents diversified by skin color and various genders. No action to be hoped for on Lebanon's famine or anywhere else either. Windmills and empty talk - today's Dems.
It’s now clear Russian conventional forces are incapable of prevailing against a NATO country; the only way Putin could win is if he escalated to the use of nuclear weapons. It’s beyond me why the West would take any action sufficiently provocative to offer Putin a pretext to do so.
Prudence is the mother of all virtues.
Several people in this thread (rcocean and Howard, to name two) really need a nap.

Not wanting this to escalate into WWIII is not the same thing as taking Putin's side. Putin is a thug who I hope will be ousted by the oligarchy that supported him. The longer the Ukrainians can hold out, the more likely that will happen. So I am routing for the Ukrainians on this one, even if it makes Biden look good.
That being said, a shooting war between nuclear powers is an insane idea. You don't have to want to suck Vlad's dick to understand that. The losing side in that kind of fight has an enormous incentive to go nuclear to prevent defeat. It starts with tactical nuclear weapons (battle field nukes) and ends with ICBMs. It's not complicated.
why this hurry to redesign Russia Government?
why is that worth thousands of Ukrainian and Russian lives?
why is this being decided in the swamp?
did the oligarchs leave pickings to be still had in Ukraine and Russia for West corruptocrats?
or will the oligarchs have to deal for their lives and wealth?
The US is too incompetent to do anything more than issue idle threats in this matter.
That's our role in the world now. Better get used to it.
