Macy Gray performed a sweet, subtle version of the National Anthem at the NBA All-Star Game, so the story should not be...

... that LeBron James was laughing and might have been laughing at her.

Put the focus where it belongs, or put it somewhere uplifting — such as on Gray's beautiful, feathered overcoat.

A bit different than I'm used to but nice singing.

The introduce her as an acclaimed singer etc from Canton Ohio.

It sounds like they just went down and grabbed one off the corner. It really diminished her. I suppose there might be more than one "acclaimed singer etc" in Canton.

Still, common decency would seem to merit a "the" it re ally grated on my ears.

Second, fuck Lebron James. He may be a world class ball player but he is also a world class China suckup and slavery apologist.

That’s a crazy head of hair on that lady.

And what’s up with the white guy with the black mask walking her out to half-court?

“Singer Macy Gray has been blasted by Republicans for suggesting the United States needs a new flag, claiming the current design is 'tattered, dated, divisive and incorrect' .

Gray, 53, made the remark in an op-ed for MarketWatch ahead of Juneteenth, a new federal holiday which commemorates the emancipation of American slaves in 1865.” Daily Mail.

Used to like Macy before she went woke. As for LeBron, he can go live in Chi-NA for all I care. He supports DICTATORS using slave labor to make his shoes so HE can make millions. Hypocrite. He should stop talking about slavery in America 200 years ago, when he is okay with it today.

LeBron has no class, just like the NBA. He just had to be the center of attention, even though he has no part in the singing. Eff 'im and the NBA he rode in on.

Has he ever made it past page 5 in a book? Ever?

Serious question
Would Le Bron have shown respect, if it had been the Chinese anthem playing?

Actually, this question was rhetorical

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves म्हणाले...

LeBron, Kapernick and Niel Young should do a version of the whiny spoiled man-baby leftist millionaires and billionaires anthem to Bernie.

michaele म्हणाले...

gilbar, just what I thought. He would have stood tall, head up and looked respectful if it was the anthem of China being sung. He has plenty of practice doing that and is very well paid to do so.

Given that he is one of China’s ambassadors to the NBA, LeBron laughing is a legitimate story, even if not the only legitimate story.

Bob Boyd म्हणाले...

Let LeBron sing it next time.

LeBron James can’t read this.

Two topics I won't use any time on: LeBron James and the NBA.

And yes, had it been the CCP's national anthem, James would have been silent, head bowed, wearing the faux-serious look that he uses when telling us how we need to be better informed on things like China.

I love Macy...Chuckie's In Love is a great song.

When visiting my dad back in 2004, we happened to tune into the Pacers-Pistons game just before the player-fan brawl erupted.

The NBA is a buncha thugs trying to one-up the National Felons League.

People keep trying to lionize LeBron, and he keeps showing his true colors.

Lebron James is dead to me. Let's see him laugh at the Chinese national anthem in China.

Birches म्हणाले...

That was nice, but if I were in a silly mood, I might think about Buckwheat singing Betty Davis Eyes and then I'd be laughing. SNL doesn't have an official clip. Sad.

indeed, she sang a distinctive, delicate rendition.

And her coat may be interesting, I guess, but the overall Visual impact was that the NBA had plucked a mismatched homeless lady wandering the LA alleyways to sing the anthem.

I took a look at Bing for images of her, and every one of them is much classier and more attractive than how she chose to present. In which case, she sent a message beyond her charming rendition.

Maybe Lebron was smiling at that complexity.

I didn't know that Macy was still around. Her song Mercy was a Zumba class mainstay about 20 years ago. The music was good, the lyrics not so much.

He was expecting the Chinese National Anthem, that seems to be his country of choice to support.

Critter म्हणाले...

LeBron James was just doing what his Chinese masters require as part of his shoe contract.

As Americans you guys probably don't realize it but you are probably the only country in the world that embraces its national anthem being sung in all kinds of funky ways. Its a difficult tune to carry but one that suits itself to different genres. Try singing O Canada or God Save the Queen in a really different and funky way. Forgetaboutit!! First of all the tunes are more martial and secondly the words are not too inspiring.

It is yet another way that you Americans are different, creative and interesting. You're cut from a different cloth, looser cloth.

Mark म्हणाले...

Kind of like complaining about some competition controversy at the Genocide Games.

One could always choose to not be an enabler and collaborator by not watching the NBA at all.

One other thing, have you ever had a moment, often in church, where you just cant stop giggling. Maybe its that old lady with the big flowered hat in front of you who sings off key or maybe its your brother who says something that gets you going. But once you start, you just cant stop! It particularly seems to happen at moments of solemnity. If you haven't had that happen to you then you haven't lived. That's Lebron James listening to this version of the national anthem. I say give him a break.

By the way Althouse is there a name for that?

A friend recently asked if I had ever seen anything as exciting as this year's NFL playoffs. I told him that the NFL has decided what it wants to be, and the NFL and its advertisers do not want me - a cisgendered white male - as a fan.

No, I told him, I didn't watch.

The NBA was years ahead of the NFL in letting me know they didn't care for my patronage.

mccullough म्हणाले...

LeBron isn’t good enough for the All Star team this year.

And the Lakers aren’t even a playoff contender.

Real American म्हणाले...

I was rather impressed at her performance, particularly since, at least judging by her hair, it came so soon after being electrocuted.

I'm fond of the funky and different version of God Save the Queen performed by the Sex Pistols.

I didn't wear Cahartt back then either.

Gray seems not far off from the character she played in “Training Day”…

Kinda hazy.

Dang, I rather liked that!

Like LeBron is always so quick to do?

How about we ask that White police officer who saved a young Black girl's life by shooting the other Black girl who was trying to stab her with a knife?

(The Joy Reid types were actually arguing that young Black girls had the right to stab each other, and it was just girls being girls.)

Mike Petrik म्हणाले...

Gray's woke rubbish notwithstanding, it was a surprisingly appealing rendition -- far superior to the idiosyncratic jazzy versions that we usually have to endure.

I never missed the All Star game or All Star Saturday night. In fact, it was part of a first date with my wife 28 years ago.

I didn't even know it was on this weekend.

Zev म्हणाले...

good rendition
but it's never the wrong time to take note of lebron's boorishness
