Talk about anything you like in the comments.
And if you want Kahtoola MICROspikes like mine to make your 4-mile hike on ice and snow secure, you can buy them here. For running shoes, I go with Kahtoola NANOspikes, here. Thanks for using those Amazon links that give me a commission, and here's the Althouse portal link, which is always also in the sidebar.

While the press, the socials and the late-night talkers have been focused on blaming the pandemic on the un-vaxxed, what have those who can take full advantage of such distractions been up to?

The pose in the top photo is a tad Big Footie...
You market those spikes very tastefully. I knew right away that they were a desirable feature, just by the way you are striding in the top pic, with a big smile. But you didn't get pushy about it. You let the picture do the work. Nice.
@Althouse, I’ve owned something like your microspikes for about forty years now. They’re an absolute lifesaver when your area is prone to snow storms, and especially if it’s prone to ice storms.

In the affluent and progressive Montgomery County, Maryland, adjacent to D.C. to the north, 95 percent of the entire population has received at least one shot, and 85 percent of the entire population is fully vaccinated.
Montgomery County is also showing the worst case numbers in the state, with a case rate of 1,861 per 100K (just a few weeks ago, they were below 50 per 100K).
Yeah, it's all the fault of the unvaxxed.

Don't know if everybody's heard, but there is a hostage stand off at a synagogue in Texas.

Gunman is claiming to be the brother of Afia Siddiqui aka Lady ISIS, who's serving 85 years in a Federal prison in Texas for terrorism related activities.
Correction: Afia Siddiqui is known as Lady al-Queda.

I've heard the headline version. But I haven't heard words in the media like "Islam" or "domestic terrorism" in connection with it.
It never got above 4below today- and it’s -20now.
I, too- lovelove your hat!

New York city has had an astronomical number of new cases for the past two weeks or so. The peak is about four times higher than anything any state saw over the previous year.
When Florida was having high case loads in the summer, it was all over the NYT as evidence of how crazy Floridians (and their governor) are. I wonder why I haven't seen the same type of article about the current NYC spike.

The Saturday Night Joke
Years ago, a young Navy Pilot was injured while ejecting from his A-4 Skyhawk due to engine failure during a cat shot from the carrier, but due to the heroics of rescue helicopter crew and the ship's hospital staff, the only permanent injury was the loss of one ear.
Since he wasn't physically impaired, he remained on flight status and eventually became an Admiral.
However, during his career he was always sensitive about his appearance.
One day the Admiral was interviewing two Navy Master Chiefs and a Marine Sergeant Major for his personal staff.
The first Master Chief was a Surface Navy type and it was a great interview. At the end of the interview the Admiral asked him,
"Do you notice anything different about me?" The Master Chief answered, "Why, yes, Admiral. I couldn't help but notice that you are missing your starboard ear, so I don't know whether this impacts your hearing on that side."
The Admiral got very angry at this lack of tact and threw him out of his office.
The next candidate, an Aviation Master Chief, when asked this same question, answered, "Well yes, Sir, you seem to be short one ear." The Admiral threw him out as well.
The third interview was with the Marine Sergeant Major. He was articulate, extremely sharp, and seemed to know more than the two Master Chiefs put together. The Admiral wanted this guy, but went ahead with the same question. "Do you notice anything different about me?"
To his surprise, the Sergeant Major said, "Yes Sir. You wear contact lenses."
The Admiral was impressed and thought to himself, what an incredibly tactful Marine. "And how would you know that?" the Admiral asked.
The Sergeant Major replied: "Well, sir, it's pretty hard to wear glasses with only one fucking ear

Narayanan,
LOL!!
I remember Walter Williams on Rush saying he gave Mrs. Williams a pair of those ice-cleats for Christmas "so she would be better able to clear the snow on the cars and shovel the driveway."
People believed him.
Hostage crisis over. Report that all hostages are safe and uninjured. Hostage taker reported down and dead.
So that scurrilous Murphy memo is fully debunked by now, yes?
Semper Fi.
The CDC has changed its mask guidance, again.
Now it is supposed to be an n95 mask. No, wait, it is supposed to be . . .
Oh, Hell, I don't know. CNN reports:
"'Loosely woven cloth products provide the least protection, layered finely woven products offer more protection, well-fitting disposable surgical masks and KN95s offer even more protection, and well-fitting (National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety)-approved respirators (including N95s) offer the highest level of protection,' The CDC says."
But the CDC's page on covid and face masks says DO NOT use N95 respirator as these are needed for medical professionals.
I have no f'n idea. A report on the local news last night said the CDC wants you to wear an N95 mask.
At this point we are way, way, beyond farce.
Last night I spent a few hours at a bowling alley in a in Polk County Wisconsin. The place was packed, standing room only. lots of shouting because bowling alleys are loud. Not one person was wearing any kind of a mask.
The vax rate in Polk County is 55%.
I expect that I will be fine.
Cute hat. A crazy head of hair you got there lady.
Hostage taker reported down and dead.
Who doesn’t know about snipers?
Loosely woven cloth products provide the least protection, layered finely woven products offer more protection, well-fitting disposable surgical masks and KN95s offer even more protection
This settles. I'm finally going to scuba dive.
All I have to do is by the right gear. Training has nothing to do with staying alive. Ditto for flying planes.
Serious question: Ann has used that same headshot for years. How long should a person go before updating a picture used to identify them on the internet?
Louis Garrel is sort of the French Woody Allen. It seems like he even aspired to become the French Woody Allen. The special feature for one of his movies was just him in Paris abusing unfortunate and unsuspecting American tourists, mostly about our lack of appreciation for Woody and his movies.
It was easy to look down on Louis for looking down on us simply because we fell out of love with Woody Allen -- Woody wasn't all he was made out to be in his salad days -- but Garrels isn't without talent himself. Like Woody he's quite gifted and also at least a little repellent -- more repellent for us than Woody is because we didn't grow up with him. Louis corresponds to stereotypes of the grubby little Frenchmen. But our parents or grandparents most likely had similar feelings about Woody, feelings we probably can't talk about now.
In any case, A Faithful Man isn't a bad film. I suppose that when you start watching you have to accept that they do things very differently in Paris than they do in Oskaloosa and be prepared for the amorality of it all. The similarities to Woody Allen can even be endearing, depending on your mood.
Louis doesn't shag his own daughter in the movie, but he does shag Johnny Depp's daughter, Lily-Rose (knowing that Johnny Depp has a grown-up child makes me feel very old, but so does everything else). Louis other co-star, Laetitia Casta, should have gotten orthodontia growing up. Comment dit-on «Invisalign» en français?
P.S. Do not update your picture!
This thing that pops up on my screen and I can't get rid of says "See Starsky & Hutch Now, Both at 78."
Ubi sunt, indeed. The Seventies were a lousy time, but sometimes I think I wouldn't mind being stuck back then. At other times, I think I was.

There was a viral tweet a short time ago where some man tweeted out how his wife came home from a 12-hour shift at work to shovel the driveway, posting a pic of her doing so. He said he would make her breakfast.
And amongst the condemnations, there were a few people responding with, "what's wrong with that?"

@Lewis Wetzel, the dirty little secret is that Omicron doesn’t care whether or not you’ve been vaccinated.
"Ann has used that same headshot for years. How long should a person go before updating a picture used to identify them on the internet?"
I forget how to change the picture, but if I were going to do it, it wouldn't be with a photograph that has a brightly colored hat covering half of my face. That's more like a photo of the hat!
I don't find Woody Allen repellant. I wish he could have settled for comedy, and forgotten about Art.
The intimate lives of famous people who I don't know aren't really that significant IMO, especially when you consider the unlikelihood that anyone outside their closest circles knows jack shit about them.
The private lives of some of my closest friends are complete mysteries, and those people actually matter to me.
Great joke, Narayanan!
4 mile hike in cold weather. Quite impressive.
It was 20 degrees, cold enough to make me wish I’d added a scarf for the first 10 minutes, but not a problem at all after that. In the end I had my jacket zipped down at the top.
