"A newborn baby who was found abandoned in an egg box in Siberia during temperatures as low as minus 20C is doing well..."

"The baby girl was discovered by a group of teenage boys on a remote snowy road near the village of Sosnovka in Russia’s Novosibirsk region. She was wrapped in an old rag and there was a feeding bottle next to her. 'We thought it was a doll at first.... It was a shock.'... It was initially feared that she could have suffered frostbite and would not survive, but doctors warmed her up by carefully rubbing her arms and legs... The discovery came on January 7, the date that Russian Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas Day. Anna and Dmitry Litvinov, whose teenage son was one of the baby’s rescuers, have said they would like to adopt the child, but they will have to wait to see if any relatives can be traced first...."

The London Times reports.

 ADDED: That's -4 Fahrenheit.

Babies and young children are able to survive low temperatures and even drowning better than older people. I think this relates to falls too, assuming they don't land on their heads obviously.

It'd be interesting to know the reason.

Off topic: I hate C as a tempermature measure. Minus -20, who knows that is? Fairenheit is much better, you know that when something is "Below zero" its Goddamn Cold. But with C, zero is 32 degrees. So, -2 isn't that cold.

My hunch is the baby wasn't there long the person who abandoned the baby waited, saw the boys coming and hid.

Someone did a funny chart once on the temperature scales. In Fahrehnheit, at 0 it's pretty darned cold and at 100 it's pretty darned hot. Has a certain intuitive appeal. In Celsius, at 0 it's just a little cold and at 100 you're dead.

-40 solves this…

Oh, someday, this baby is going to deliver Russia from the land of dictatorships.

It’s refreshing to see teenage boys portrayed in a positive way—that is rare in the media.

True as to an intuitive grasp of the practical.

It's also true that above or below the limit, trying to accomplish something is extremely difficult and slow and prone to injure the workers.

Rubbing as a frostbite treatment is contraindicated, I would suppose especially among medically trained people in Siberia. This story thus has at least one glaring detail that is highly questionable. Either the reporter "reported" his story by making this detail up from remembered Jack London stories, or misunderstood the treatment of the baby. Either are possible.

That said, I can't read the article, but I wonder why such a feelgood story about that
horrible country Russia appears in such a prestigious paper, and here, just when Ukraine is about to be invaded by that horrible country, Russia. makes me feel like I just read a propaganda piece from the People's Tourism Board of Novosibirsk.

All it needs is a picture with doctors holding the baby and a Coke to make the scam complete.

A feel good story- I like it.

On the temperature scales- as a chemist, I used C for everything in the lab to do with temps right from college, and so am perfectly "bilingual" in that I know instantly what is meant by -20 C- I don't even do the conversions any more in my head. You just get use to using it and what it means viscerally.

Centigrade temperature is great for science, Fahrenheit is great for human beings: zero is too fucking cold, 100 is too fucking hot and 70 is perfect.

tommyesq म्हणाले...

Fahrenheit is also better in that it is more finely graduated than Celcius - Celcius has only 100 points between water freezing and water boiling, whereas Fahrenheit has 180, and Fahrenheit has about 105 points at which human beings are likely to experience in the environment (roughly 0 to 105), while Celcius has only 58 (-18 to 41) - so each degree Celcius covers about twice as much temperature difference than each degree Fahrenheit.

According to weather.com, the low for Sosnovka on Jan 7th 2022, was 20°F. I'd believe them over the London Times, any day.

Am usually more than ready to criticize the UK's 'neo-barbarism' (the government is, I believe, preparing to broaden the circumstances when spousal murder is allowed, so long as the victim is old or sick etc); I will admit that the number of the comments on that article congratulating the good character of the male teenagers surprised me.
