"White privilege, he told his nearly all-White class, is 'a fact.' Hawn apologized after at least one parent objected. But a few months later..."

"... he assigned the Ta-Nehisi Coates essay 'The First White President,' spurring more parent complaints. This time school officials issued a letter of reprimand to Hawn for one-sided teaching. After that, Hawn promised to stay away from the topic. But in late April, a student mentioned White privilege during a class discussion about the trial of Derek Chauvin — the White Minneapolis police officer who murdered George Floyd by kneeling on the Black man’s neck — and Hawn could not help himself. He navigated to YouTube and pulled up 'White Privilege,' a scathing and profane four-minute poetry performance by Kyla Jenée Lacey. 'Oh, am I making you uncomfortable?' the Black writer demands at one point. “Try a cramped slave ship.' 'I will probably get fired for showing this,' Hawn joked before hitting play. Less than a month later, he was."

Privilege is expressed in the form of taboos. American political taboos favor blacks.

No matter how much power the Liberal/Left has, and how fasicst they are, they ALWAYS portray themselves as the brave little rebels, trying to bring "the truth and new challenging ideas" to everyone.

I'd love to know why Mr. Hawn seems so obsessed with teaching anti-white ideas to his class. Did he think all this up himself? I doubt it. Where is it coming from? who is teaching the teacher? And while Mr. Hawn may have a white skin, perhaps he identifes as something else. Is that the root of his obsession?

And thank God he was fired. Which brings up the question, we all think that kids need to know reading, writing, math, etc. But after that, what values should be taught? How should history and Literature be taught? Ultimately, that's something the parents should decide.

Then maybe the kids are too young for the subject.

Dave Begley म्हणाले...

Yeah, Chauvin really is a beneficiary of white privilege as he sits in the MN state pen; fighting for his life every day. The jury was intimidated to find him guilty. And, on top of that, substantial credible evidence existed that Floyd died of a drug overdose.

We don't need a race war in America. Slavery ended in 1865. But the Left wants to divide us into tribes so they can gain power.

And what was Hawn's teaching assignment? What was he teaching?

He'll probably get a higher paying job at some East Coast prep school after all this publicity.

What Are They Teaching Our Children?, an article by John Hinderaker at Powerline Blog.

Hinderaker writes:

.... In Minnesota, the battle over CRT has focused largely on new Social Studies standards and benchmarks for grades K-12. Our left-wing governor appointed a committee consisting mostly of representatives of left-wing activist groups to draft the new standards, and my organization has been battling to educate the public and mobilize opposition. We got 23,000 Minnesotans to submit public comments opposing the first and second drafts of the new Social Studies standards. The third draft has just been released, and once again we are leading the opposition.

... My colleague Katherine Kersten has reviewed and analyzed draft number three of the proposed standards. I strongly recommend that you read her entire analysis to fully appreciate how evil the CRT movement is. Here are a few excerpts; Kathy writes:

-------

The first Ethnic Studies standards (Std. 23) teaches that a student’s personal identity is determined by his or her group status:

Identity: Analyze the ways power and language construct the social identities of race, religion, geography, ethnicity and gender. Apply these understandings to one’s own social identities and other groups living in Minnesota, centering those whose stories and histories have been marginalized, erased or ignored.

The second and third standards (Std. 24 and Std. 25) require students to organize to “resist” America’s “systemic” abuse of power against “marginalized,” “oppressed” groups:

Resistance: Describe how individuals and communities have fought for freedom and liberation against systemic and coordinated exercises of power locally and globally…and organize with others to engage in activities that could further the rights and dignity of all.

Ways of Knowing: Use ethnic and indigenous studies methods in order to understand the roots of contemporary systems of oppression and apply lessons from the past to eliminate historical and contemporary injustices.

Exponents of CRT are being dishonest about the fact that they are using the tenets of CRT as their underlying philosophy of history.

Now, all histories are written under sway of some sort of philosophy of history, whether the historian knows or admits it or not (even the view that history is nothing but one contingent event after another is a philosophy of history).

But Marxist & CRT histories labor under a mighty-big philosophical assumption --- that consciousness exists. By consciousness, I don't mean consciousness in any physiological sense, but that what a knowing subject can know is determined by an environmental factor (e.g. race, class).

Consciousness is so ubiquitous in the discourse of the Left since Feuerbach & Marx that it's just assumed to be a fact of human existence. Well, it's not. Most of the history of Western philosophy gets along pretty well without Consciousness in the Marxist sense. Matter of fact, for some schools of thought (e.g. Wolffian Rationalism & its progeny, Kant) it's impossible that such an epistemologically constrained knowing subject can properly be considered a "knowing subject" at all.

This is what pisses me off most about these encounters with CRT at the pre-university level: the arrogant pretense that their dubious metaphysics (and all metaphysical assumptions are prima facie dubious) are just obvious fact.

More and more a point that I saw in Legal Insurrection comes up.

"The bigger issue, it seems to me, is why white people consistently feel the need to pretend to be minorities in order for advancement in their fields."

No one pretends to be white- especially not a white male- it doesn't provide any meaningful advantages. Well, it's often actually a negative. If it's possible at all to shoehorn a female, minority, or for more diversity points, a minority female, into a job that was held by a white male, a white male not matter how stellar his qualifications won't get the job.

Orchestras have historically hired blindly- literally blindly- by having auditioners play behind curtains so they would be judged solely by their sound and playing. Which led, of course, to too many Asians and whites in the orchestra. So now the hiring committees are viewing the applicants so they can judged on their "diversity" which will supposedly somehow make the orchestra better....

Seems that judging blindly leads to discrimination. Or does it? Another thing often said- equal opportunity does not mean equal outcome.

Since there is apparently no remedy for White Privilege other than extermination of Whites, what do proponents of CRT expect to be the future path of society should they be successful in achieving power? “Stolen Valor” is a term used for those who falsely claim merit for military actions done by others. Perhaps we could use a couple of new terms:

“Phony Guilt” for those who ostentatiously apologize for offenses everyone knows they have not committed; the apology being a way of drawing attention to the fact that they have not done what they are ostensibly claiming to have done.

“Usurped Suffering” for those who speak as if they had personally endured vile actions done to others, such as being in a concentration camp or on a slave ship, when the speaker has no first hand knowledge of such things.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

Oh, White Privilege is real all right. It starts early in grade school when white kids /1 discover that they can’t get away with what black kids get away with, lest some parent complain that black kids are being disciplined out of proportion to their percentage of the student population. /2 This encourages white students to develop better self discipline, which pays off later in life. It continues when black students discover that they can get an A without working as hard as white kids, nor do they need to score as well in the SAT to get into a top tier university. And then it continues into the job market, when a boss has to discipline a worker. White males are forced to assume that they really need to correct their behavior and correct it, improving chances of future raises and promotions, while women get to assume the Patriarchy and blacks get to blame it on white racism, and neither makes any effort to address their own shortcomings. /3
__________
Notes:
1) For purposes of this rant Asians are grouped with whites, which is what CRT theorists do already.

2) Parents complaining about daughters being raped or that their children are being cast as “oppressors” are evil, and no attention is to be paid to their complaints. But a parent complaining about her son being suspended over something as minor as getting together with ten of his closest friends to beat up some random honkey in the halls, that’s worth listening to. CRT teaches that the honkey had it coming.

3) Yeah, sometimes the boss is just an asshole.

I was born poor and it gave me a pretty decent sized chip on my shoulder. I had zero wealth privilege. I went to a 60/40 black-to-white ratio elementary school. My teachers were all white so in the classroom, I experienced some privilege, I suppose. On the playground, not so much.

That shoulder-chip was a blessing in disguise for sure. Not having privilege is a blessing ... if one uses it to improve themselves. If one uses it to excuse themselves, not so much. Talking about who has it and who doesn't all the time ... loser talk.

There is a time and place to discuss most anything, even white privilege. I'll admit to not being a fan of the word 'privilege' since it feels manipulative, designed to induce guilt. But anyone who belongs to a majority race will have advantages that someone of a minority race may not have, or at least fewer disadvantages. It's similar to the advantage of being a native speaker of English when it's the global language. My concern about this teacher, though, is that the discussion sounds like it's not taking place in spirit of openness, inquiry, and diversity of thought. This teacher is presenting a kind of fundamentalist doctrine to impressionable students who may not have the ability to think critically about it.

The fat dumb and lazy whites of the Confederate States of America don't have full white privilege. It's punching down to rub it in their greasy rotund faces.

Just replace lazy whites with Jew, or Black, Or Hispanic and you will understand what Howard is all about.

I got to this very late, I have been busy all day. I couldn't read the article at WAPO because of the firewall but I found it re-printed in the Anchorage Daily News, you can read it here.

I have lived East Tennessee for nearly 40 years, 30 of those in Kingsport, and still have a home there though I spend most of my time now in retirement at my home in GA, where i am now. The high school in question is not really in Kingsport at all, it is a county school, and serves students outside the city.. Kingsport has its own system, where all three of my children went, so I really don't know enough about the county schools to comment. There are very rural parts of the county, of course, but the Tri-Cities (including nearby Bristol TN/VA, and Johnson City, TN) has a metro population of over 500,000. Kingsport is very industrialized and has more in common with places like Oak Ridge or Huntsville, AL, due to the large Eastman Chemical operation there (once the main Eastman Kodak operation outside Rochester), which results in a large population of advance degree chemists, engineers, and other professionals. There is also a large medical community that serves the region. So it is not just a bunch of hillbillies and rednecks. It is very conservative. It has only had one Democrat Representative in Congress since the Civil War, and just for.4 years, his term ended in 1871. Mr. Hawn really is a fish out of water, most of the liberals in the area are probably at ETSU in Johnson City. I know just a few.

And for Howard's benefit, here is a little history. East TN never considered itself Confederate. There was little slavery in that part of the South and after TN seceded all the counties east of the Cumberland Plateau tried to break off from the rest of the state and stay in the Union, like WV. But the vote to break up the state failed in the legislature. More than 30,000 Tennesseans served in the Union Army during the war, the largest representation from any of the Southern states.

I might also mention Kingsport has a lot in common with Madison, WI, since it was designed around 1917 by John Nolen, who also designed much of the UW campus and some of Madison, I believe. I think Althouse may live in a John Nolen neighborhood. The town was built by New York businessmen to become a major manufacturing center, which it basically achieved by WWII. It has an excellent school system which was originally designed for the city's developers by Columbia University. Oak Ridge, another completely planned city, also owes some of its heritage to Kingsport, as engineers from the Kodak operation designed and operated the Y-12 plant that was at the heart of the uranium production for the Hiroshima atom bomb.

Speaking truth through projection only colors the speaker.

That said, while bias is intrinsic, prejudice is progressive. Most people do not exercise liberal license to indulge diversity [dogma] (i.e. color judgment). Conservatives (i.e. pro-Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness under a Constitutional framework) stood on principle to oppose slavery and diversity.

A teacher was fired for lying about the character and practice of spreading diversity [dogma] (inequity, and exclusion) that breeds adversity.

Diversity of individuals, minority of one. #HateLovesAbortion

"'Oh, am I making you uncomfortable?' the Black writer demands at one point. “Try a cramped slave ship.'"

uh, try traveling on a coffin ship after your family had been thrown off the land because the potato failed and you couldn't pay the rent and emigrating was your only way to live.

Which would you chose to be? A poor European in the famine years of the 1840s or a black slave who at least was given some food to eat.

and if you think western civilization was bad, try reading the history of China. Taiping rebellion anyone?

Bad teacher, stupid man, but the job my father used to do moved to the Tri-Cities, so I can identify with his motivation.
